I'm in 75% BTC 25% FIAT right now.  I'm hoping that this will hold. there is a lot of bad news about payments and they are slowly turning off spigots which has been making me nervous

OKPay stopped taking fiat so I don't have the quick/easy way to get money in and I did KYC with them. Not cool, but I had faith they would be around, IMO its worse than Dwolla, but hey I already have the BTC punt funds I want in so whatever.

Makes me nervous about liquidity being more difficult for MTGOX, but as has been said before the big whales use SWIFT BIC CODES so we just have to ride on their backs, or land without a parachute.

Bitcoin has been very good to me, paying for purchases through its volatility... i started with 24 btc back in Feb and have spent about 1,300$ worth combined with trading where most of the time i was eroding bitcoins but got lucky a few strategic times, and today am at ... 25 btc. Still holding a about a 1100$ of that in profits + 1300$ spent is not bad for a small outlay back in feb getting in at about 15£..

I thought it's interesting to look at the blockchain hosts as i now feel the real downside to bitcoin won't even be exchanges closing. Those who have fiat and aren't all in when an exchange closes will be in trouble because I'm sure if MTGox closed they'd let folks pull out their bitcoins and they'd allow repatriation of funds, worst case..  US Govt is the most aggressive in the world on financial liberties of citizens in the world and If america got off the bitcoin grid and the US government decided to just declare bitcoin illegal, I mean what can they do worst case? Shut down bitcoin traffic at the USA backbone level?

Assuming its not that bad and they go after the exchanges, leave backbones alone and the network continues through USA bitcoin hums along and they freeze assets but people can still pull out their funds but only through fiat or btc network no more trading online.

Then what happens? much tougher to buy/sell online so easily combined with an already scarce resource, worst comes to worst you just sell them for cash at inflated prices through localbitcoins.com or the like.  The network still hums away, the benefits still exist and it is solid. Even if the USA does clamp down and shut down blockchain hosts which would be a huge loss in network power check this list out. Price is decided by those still using it, a forum with private contact details is used, no actual exchange-type just bartering is still possible.

Representing! Syrian Arab republic hosting blockchain is very surprising. http://bitcoinstatus.rowit.co.uk. my point being there are so many dimensions to this thing who is to judge honestly. annoyingly my liquidity is in GBP and it takes forever for these clowns to drop their asking price to reasonable levels with 300 coins/day volume i have to endure a waiting game..

I'm pretty sure each currency has its own volume and we are in separate pools.  I often play the arb game between USD and GBP but in today/yesterday's case GBP has shot up and the gulf between what i could get for my BTC with USD vs GBP was too large.. I've put a bet also on GBP, so I get what I ask for

With good volume days the gap between USD and GBP->USD is usually tight and if I want to play the back and forth game USD market is the way to go.

Just add new currencies to your wallet and look at how the volume changes when you select each.  Note on bitcoinity the GBP and EUR etc markets. Generally all the markets follow the USD movements but with a bit of lag.

Quantitive Easing is deployed with a goal of increasing inflation sure, but do you disagree inflation is pretty much inherent in any monetary system since the concept of money was deployed? I'm only questioning why anyone would be surprised that over 100 years 1$ buys far less?

Edit: the guy int he post before me is correct. QE was deployed with the goal of increasing liquidity for banks on the dime of the taxpayer which yes i agree has basically amounted to highway robbery and complete subsidy of greedy banking's downside

There was a huge wall for most of today (I'm in the UK) from 7 AM onwards to about 5:30PM UK time. check out the volume at that time and the drop from 105-103.6, the wall dissapeared right before the market sell.

Yeah, a system based on bitcoin would be great. But we're not there yet.  Money we'd need to at least plug in and have power running to use is cool but stable physical legal tender for now will will rule. I'm hoping for wireless charger tech to take over so everywhere we walk in cities/ towns we're juicing up wirelessly and never have to recharge our portables. Bitcoin would fit great there, and MTgox would still suck.

Your point about if your amalgamated balances > 10,000$ is spot on, i should have included that also but you rebuffed my point.  Basically, if you have x number of foreign accounts, and you add their balances all up to a figure, and that figure is above 10,000$ you need to report every single damned account even if some of them are below 10,000$. Or face a 150,000$ fine if uncle sam finds out

In the $2tn market for exchange traded funds, they are calling it the “Winkle wrinkle”.
The recent proposal from the controversial Winklevoss twins to launch an ETF that tracks the volatile virtual currency known as Bitcoin has been met with scepticism from industry insiders.
The Bitcoin ETF will probably never hit the market because it is too difficult for “authorised participants” and “market-makers” – the banks and trading firms that typically sustain such funds – to profit from discrepancies between the underlying asset and the ETF, they say.
The suspicions cast over the proposed Bitcoin ETF are perhaps the starkest example yet of the complex cast of financial characters and motivations needed to launch investment vehicles that attempt to provide quick and easy access to sometimes esoteric and thinly traded assets.
“Bitcoin itself is not even a developed market, let alone to build an ETF on top of it,” says Reginald Browne, managing director at KCG Holdings, formerly Knight Capital, and a key figure in the development of the funds, which have surged in popularity over the past two decades.
Mom and pop investors, as well as larger institutional investors such as pension funds and insurance companies, have rushed into roughly 3,400 ETFs in recent years, using the vehicles that trade like stocks on exchanges to place their money into a wide range of assets.
The “Winklevoss Bitcoin Trust” will use fractions of the twins’ accumulated Bitcoin holdings to give investors greater exposure to the virtual currency, according to a regulatory filing made early this month. Investors would initially get exposure to one-fifth of a Bitcoin for each ETF share bought. The Winklevoss twins plan to sell 1m shares, giving the overall fund a $20m value.

A person familiar with the proposed Bitcoin ETF, which still needs to be approved by the US securities watchdog, says the fund has yet to recruit authorised participants, or APs. A spokeswoman for the Winklevoss twins, Tyler and Cameron, declined to comment on the matter.
Authorised participants are essential to building the funds since they create and redeem the ETF shares, usually in exchange for baskets of the underlying securities, from the ETF sponsor.
APs typically sign on to support ETFs because they believe they can profit by “arbitraging” small differences between the price of the fund’s shares and the underlying securities being tracked. “If the ETF price trades above the NAV [net asset value, or the value of the ETF’s securities], the APs buy the underlying assets in the market and convert them into ETF shares,” JPMorgan analysts wrote in a recent note. “On the other hand, if the ETF price trades at a discount relative to the NAV, the APs buy ETF shares in the market and redeem them for the underlying basket.”

That may prove difficult to do when it comes to Bitcoin, despite the Winklevoss’s claims that APs to the fund will “have an opportunity to realise a riskless profit” by arbitraging the price of the fund’s shares with the underlying price of the cyber coinage, ETF insiders say. Many Wall Street institutions remain suspicious of the virtual currency, especially now that it has attracted the scrutiny of various regulators. It may also be hard to encourage big financial institutions that typically act as APs to trade such an uncommon asset as a crypto-currency.
ETF experts estimate there are roughly four dozen APs in the market. These include: Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Barclays, BNP Paribas, Citigroup, Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, KCG, Morgan Stanley, Nomura, Société Générale, UBS and Virtu Financial, which specialises in high-frequency trading.
“Most ETFs are going to have somewhere between five and 20 [APs],” says the head of ETFs at one large investment bank. Some market-watchers are worried that APs may choose not to support ETFs in times of intense market stress. Last month at least one authorised participant suspended redemptions on ETFs after bumping up against its own internal risk limits during an intense sell-off in the market.

“There’s not a lot of legal responsibility [in being an AP],” says the investment bank’s head of ETFs, meaning most of them act as “at will” participants. “It’s the combination of the real time arbitrage with the ability to balance out your inventory that’s really the basis of the ETF market.”

Still, many ETF issuers, market-makers and APs insist they will be there to support the exchange traded funds, even in turbulent times. Many expect that during bouts of intense market volatility, the price discrepancies between ETF shares and their underlying securities will simply intensify until they attract APs back into the arbitrage trades at the heart of ETF mechanics.
“I don’t think we’re ever going to have a situation where everyone just decides we don’t want to make money,” says one AP who declined to be named. When it comes to the Bitcoin ETF, however, that moneymaking opportunity for Wall Street banks and trading firms is harder to find.

Mr Browne, of KCG, says of the Bitcoin ETF: “There has to be some investment merit to bring an ETF to the marketplace and without that it is not going to be successful. Investors won’t expand it, market-makers can’t trade it.”

This has been talked about before but the other currency markets have separate bid/ask walls and currencies. You can play the arb yourself sometimes, it has made money ie the GBP or EUR asks don't react as fast as USD market sometimes so I like to park currencies across usd/eur/gbp for those opportunities

when i see at 4 AM these huge buys and a 2m on bid between the price when i went to bed, it hardly makes me think it's organic growth but then again what is the differnece between this and the stock market?

at the risk of getting slaughtered here, does no one feel the price is being propped up? don't get me wrong i've been well wrong since July consistently but I dont see unabashed demand for bitcoins, i see huge buys at 4 AM UK time when the US is starting to go to bed and massive bid walls appearing as has been the case it seems from 75 onwards.

I am just curious as to how far this will go, clearly there is little trading activity at these new prices and those walls propping up the price if they dissapeared we would find ourselves at 120 again in no time flat.

I realllly think this is not a fair valuation for BTC.. it should be much lower, fact is price is simply a function of coins available just on gox and not representative of the ones floating out there at any time and is a very small subset of whats out there just this order book being manipulated by whales i mean come on, liquidity problems at gox, how is this a sound market

I love BTC but I think there will be a period of price spikes / dumps for quite a while which strictly speaking in terms of distributing more coins is a good thing, but burning speculators / new comers is a bad thing. I think bitcoin is awesome but I have ongoing concerns.  I agree with all of you that bitcoin is going to explode but at the same time have worries that I don't think are unfounded.  Bitcoins are still largley paced at the whim of people with self interests at heart who control the majority of coins.  In addition you have a major exchange that probably has a huge stockpile of coins themselves. Then we see these buying patterns from the whales of big buys into walls -> large bid walls placed to support the new price. This is not the behavior of your neighbors getting into btc.

I'm still concerned about MTGox and their FIAT problem.  You're a BTC millionaire, and it amounts to several millions, lets say.  You email them about making a withdrawal and you get this response (i got this response yesterday regarding my transfer request over SEPA, not USD, and not for that much ).

This has been going on for months. I take on board what people are saying that this could be a non issue. However people need to eat, and right now you can't go to the supermarket and feed your family with bitcoins. So you have essentially a number balance at an unregulated exchange which is really just a limited liability company. What else can you do but buy bitcoins with your milliions?

Then you have other exchanges providing a way out for payments, but that takes time and patience because until today these exchanges generally did not have a great book order depth.  So slippage is a real problem for the BTC milllionaire who's only way to get his 10's of millions out from mtgox is to slowly pump it into bitcoins and try for an exchange that pays out.  Luckily MTgox, for whatever reason still basically sets the BTC price.  So what can you do? you can pump the price with your millions and patienty wait for bids to fill in on the other exchanges. You can move your accumulated BTC to liquid exchanges and slowly build up a fiat balance on that as bids support smaller dumps. If i put on my real tinfoil hat you wait until those exchanges build enough supporting bids and then you dump and start transfering your millions finally home.

I know all of this has been said before but it haunts me.  If MTGox was paying out and if they werent still the exchange that sets the price and buy / sell panic on the other exchanges I'd be way less concerned about this new price.  Remember BTC is the only real way to pull money out reliably from MTGox..

And the annoying part here is I AGREE with you. But where you and I probably differ is I see bitcoin surviving not equal to bitcoin staying at current price levels. Of course bitcoin will survive. I'm just concerned with the forum's recent posts of to tha moon linear 1000$ by January etc.

My point is that today's price is not certain to be correct based on these factors and you guys need to awknowledge the uncertainty caused by this situation it is being underplayed big time.  I could be totally wrong (probably am?)  The biggest exchange is crippled fiat wise and the only way out is BTC, they set the price, rising BTC price makes other exchanges follow.

Bitcoin has a bright future long term but right now MTgox is the dark shadow over the short term with huge stores of BTC in their control, no ability to pay out, and continued dominance in BTC price setting.  Imagine this blows up and the newbs get burned again like in april. Everyone runs for the hills again. Lets be clear this is a possible scenario.

Edit: you guys are right regarding foolishness of staying on Gox, and I've recently wised up.  I'm verifying for Stamp and moving my funds (not much) asap to Bitstamp, UK exchange, I'm in the UK, feel much better about that.  Wish I did it earlier when we hit 180.

Just trade on the USD market.  I just got burned again trying to be clever and play on the GBP market, Euro market is also not great.  There's little point in playing on the other markets, especially when you can't withdraw really, stay USD for the volatility

I just made .3 btc on stamp from the move.. why the hell don't they have a unified screen where you can cancel and place orders, too many clicks navigating around the site.  Otherwise, I am digging stamp, way cheaper commissions = I can make money and not just give it all to gox.

The UI needs help though way too convoluted to reach your open orders unless i'm missing something.

Man I still am slapping myself for being on gox for so long. Bitstamp calculating prices for buy / sell WITH THE FEE INCLUDED is a godsend.

Also the fact that they give you breaks on fees based on USD traded and not BTC is also much more honest, with gox fees effectively go up with bitcoin price which is a joke so now you need to trade 3x as much to get breaks on fees and keep trading that and they still don't match stamps.

Gox is straight up dishonest, they dont even warn you of withdrawal delays on their homepage when the ethical thing to do would be just that

It took me months to learn how to deal with the bear shakeouts.

That being said it may not be a bad thing, I'd only recommend you don't try and correct for now and see if your move ends up being a good one instead of whittling away btc..

My gut feeling says that 350ish is the short term top until next week or Sunday, and we're going to see some shakeouts between here and 300 before continuing up to 400.  I think the next couple of weeks with stick around 300-400.

You know a mandatory trading window would be great, when MTGox would be closed for maintenance. this 24/7 thing is not good, especially when there is No communication from these clowns. They got rich off the community's back and they don't care.

They should say something like, first of the month between x-x AM/PM we will shut down services and they should schedule change requests / maintenance for that window.

I really don't get this - You're exposed to BTC/USD which is far more volatile than any USD/EUR rate over the past few years why trade on euro market which is less volatile than the usd market

No, the euro market isn't equally as volatile as the USD market, that's wrong.

My currency is GBP. When I cash out I just take a Sepa from Bitstamp which gets an fx fee to GBP, but who cares when I traded in GBP on gox the spreads were huge, the volatility is terrible, i lost tons of opportunities that would have made me big BTC gains,  You make a btc gain that easily will cover your Euro fx fee.

That's the thing we're hoping the market makers are benevolent but those of us who have been in the game from teh start of the year have real emotional scars lol behind the price drop - imagine now with all the hype if that were to happen.

It obviously can happen, this is how cryptocurrencies work, and is the downside of having this kind of return available.

I just secured my original outlay, so I'm sitting on 100% profit BTC.  it is a good price and I'm still in the game.

I give up.  The past few days will be disastrous for BTC publicity.

bitstamp just cost me a lot of money to cash out and now i find they're having problems.  I lose, big time.

I am butthurt right now fully admitted, however the recent events of the past few days do not help show this is not a ponzi scheme because the net effect will be the same.  Late comers spending almost 1000$ for ONE bitcoin will walk away burned publicity will be terrible. Who wants to deal with the stress of pump and dump.  Who will put what they can afford to lose when it is certain they will lose it if they're not quicker than exchanges f'ing up or dumpers dumping.

I'm leaving my profit in BTC (60%) and withdrawing my investment (assuming bitstamp doesnt go under tomorrow cause thats where my fiat is, i frankly wish i cashed out on gox and waited it out).  I'm not fully cashing out because (i'm probably an idiot) I do believe in the idea deep down and thats why this is so painful to watch and gets me so emotional.

Greedy apples doing DDOS and dumps on exchanges to serve their desires do not bode well for a system which relies on trusting the community to preserve value. Maybe long term this will smooth over but I can't see anyone buying like they were a few days ago anymore, Top was 900$

I'm not doing my part to crash it, just took my original money back and whatever happens to my BTC value so be it.  Very dissapointed, but not sure why any of us expected this time to be different

I've been so wrong over the past few weeks, so you don't have to listen to me.  At least I'm in profit, although I could have had over 2x the profit I've got now.  

I've got fiat parked on the side in the low chance that this is too good to be true, if we go to the moon it will be unfortunately with far less coins I had a few weeks back.  It's been a hell of a learning experience.

In case you havent figured this out, place buys in low sub 1150s, place sells in 1190, and they're just going back and forth I believe this is friendly behavior giving out free coins and money, or we're going down, who knows

I think thats why they did this zero fee holiday, they knew it would go crazy, hell, they may even be dishing this out, this is a reminder of who is the boss when it comes to day trading.

What's great is that Gox whale's can only manipulate us for so long, you can almost see the arrogance... It seems BTC-E and BTCChina are about to lead the recovery.

The news has been great so far, we just had a 500$+ drop, over the weekend when there's no money coming in, I'm not sure what more you guys are looking for.

If we go down from here, buy more, but I doubt it. 

Just remember most people on here have an agenda.  Fact is there has been great news for weeks, there is plenty of money on the sidelines who sees a 500$ discount in front of them, and lol fiat is still trapped on gox.
