It looks to me like MtGox is following the Chinese exchanges right now. This latest increase for instance, follows the Chinese markets. Also, see the increase in volume and how it follows.
It did lead in the latest mini-crash, but that was 2 weeks ago and things seem to have changed drastically. MtGox is not even the second biggest exchange in volume right now.
the 2 increases today were initiated by gox, look at the volume and time in the diagrams.
right now, china is waiting for gox to break 219 or 220, then china will take 1300. Maybe im wrong here, will see in next minutes

I would say the opposite: first they kept the price up 10% above market to lure people into depositing their real bitcoins in exchange for gox dollars (virtual dollars in MtGOX's internal client accounts); while stalling on dollar withdrawals (the conversion of gox dollars into real dollars). The high price also discouraged people from changing their gox dollars into gox bitcoins (virtual bitcoins in MtGOX's internal client accounds) and withdrawing them (that is, converting them to real bitcoins).
When GOX clients began to realize that dollar withdrawals weren't working, they tried to use the bitcoin route in spite of the 10% loss. Then at first MtGOX raised the premium to 20%, and also began to stall on bitcoin withdrawals -- thanks to a providential "malelability bug" that stalled 40,000 bitcoins over several month, but which they somehow could not figure out in all that time.
But those measures did not stop the outflow, so they just suspended all withdrawals and promised that by Monday they may provide an estimate of when they may promise something.

During the long period of stagnation in the 400s, I though it might have been one person who seemed to dump 400 coins every time the price started to creep up. I figured it might be someone with stolen coins trying to convert to fiat without dropping the price too quickly.

Bitcoin is great thing, not because of hardware, it's great because of it's protocol (software). That's why security can not be and should not be guaranteed by hardware. It should be enforced in protocol, on software side. Solutions are out there, just check some other coins and their solutions.
But i dont really see it change. Hardware companies are too deep into BTC coding decisions to let anything change as far as that goes.
I still believe in Bitcoin, i still hold what i have, and buy what i can, but i dont have to like every aspect of it.

I have observed the last 3 big bubbles and it's always the same pattern. At the first bubble I have made the mistake and sold at this phase. Everyone I know made this mistake once.

I dont think that this chart is accurate. The pump is likely to happen before (speculation, price-in of halfing) or around (actual lower supply) the 2020 halfing.
