Where's the bottom?

Edit: It went down to $4760 and is now moving back up. I think this is what the Goldman Sachs fuss was all about. They were wrong imho and Bitcoin is now moving to $5k. Loaded up on a few coins (trading) but you really start hating yourself when you lose 600 bucks because you click the wrong button on a fucking trading platform.

That happened to me yesterday on Bitfinex and to make matters worst just after that the site went all glitchy while they updated some new features, couldn't log in for half hour and then when I did my balances all showed ZERO. Talk about a panic attack. Eventually the issue was resolved though.

Phew

Totally. When your balance shows zero the brain goes in overdrive: "Did I get hacked? Did one of my positions without a stop-loss go bust? SOMEBODY NEEDS TO DO SOMETHING!". Usually you're just logged into a guest account or something. Or the data didn't load. But when you can make money at the click of a button you can also lose money at the click of a button, too.

I had a similar scare the other day.
Got my coins in a ledger Nano S but use watch addresses with a blockchain wallet to keep an eye on what they are worth. Sent a payment from the ledger which then sent the remaining stash to a change address.
Imagine my horror when I looked at the blockchain wallet and saw a balance of around a couple of dollars because I had not imported the change address that was being used!!
Nearly sh!t myself.

Does that mean that fees will begin to drop since there is little to no backlog?
I assume that miners will be happy to include a transaction with a smaller fee than none at all?

How the fuck are RogerBucks up 15% over the last 24 hours.

Lunacy !

Someone is hemorrhaging a lot of bitcoin to make that happen. Depending on the will and the depth of their pockets it is certainly possible there will be another attempt to push BCH to 0.2 but it would be very expensive.

It's not that complicated really. At this point Jihan Wu and Roger Ver likely have a million or so BCH between them. It is a centralized project managed by a single developer under the overall control of Bitmain.

This conclusion is obvious from the BCH developer interview here:
https://bitcoinmagazine.com/articles/future-bitcoin-cash-interview-bitcoin-abc-lead-developer-amaury-s%C3%A9chet/

It would be a trivial matter in the future for the Chinese government to pressure Jihan and force modifications to the Bitcoin Cash code.  Thus Bitcoin Cash has no real independence from government and is not decentralized.

+1 This.
Not sure how anyone can see it as anything else but a centralised altcoin.

Last couple of blocks they mined do have 2X signalling?
Looks like they (BTCC) only managed to mine two non 2X blocks before switching back to 2X.
Can someone explain?

Yeah there better not be a full reindex with 0.15.0 - I really can't be doing with that, I went through that process a few times in earlier releases when I had a power cut in my house.
Just loaded 0.15.0 rc3 on my laptop and no re-indexing was required.

Can anyone simply explain why a GPU mined network wouldn't work or be supported? In the future I somehow see users validating the network by simply holding or using bitcoin on a lightweight client. Not that I'd like to fork off to try but something like how torrents work where users validate the content. GPU mining sounds like a step in that direction although I have no real technical understanding on the matter. I suppose that's what I'm asking for and I'd rather hear it here than on a fanboy page.
Hardware specifically designed for whatever algo you use will be built and mining will once again be centralized. There is no way around this, unless it is just not profitable to do so in which case who cares.

I was thinking about this point and wondered if a coun could be developed which would use a constantly changing algo which would only be suited to a CPU? However, even if this was possible, what is to stop large investors just buying large quantaties of cpus and centralising mining yet again?
There just seams to be no way around this problem?

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=996318.5720

Post a bitcoin address (preferably one you haven't ever used - or are going to use)
Sign a message  with it, and post the message.

Someone will confirm the message matches the address, by re-quoting it
If your account is hacked, messages deleted, BTC address in profile changed etc.
You should still be able to recover your account if you can resign a message from a mod.

Did that about a week before my account got hacked but the admins never even responded to any of my requests to re-instate.
Oh and thanks to meuh and last of the v8s for answering my previous question.

And if you want to own a house or land, it would be smarter to only liquidate enough bitcoin for a sizable down payment, and then get a really good low fixed rate 30yr loan for the rest. Bitcoin's yearly returns would handily beat, actually crush any 3-4% yearly interest on the loan. Plus both the house/land AND your left over bitcoin would both be increasing in value relative to fiat while you were still making loan payments.
Spot on.

Strangely this is exactly what I did when purchasing a new car. I could easily have bought the car using only a small percentage of my BTC holdings but figured that it would be better to get a loan then pay the monthly payment for the next two years (even if I have to use my BTC to do this with, which I wont) as the increases in the value of holding my BTC would be far greater than the loan repayment. That is when the two years are up I am sure that the value of my BTC at that point would be worth a lot more than what the loan cost me.

edit: looks like this goes against gentalmand's advise!

This is fascinating to watch: People are getting seriously rich-ish on this forum (everyone has their own definition of that, but it is what it is) and it's fun to read about how people handle it. From my dot.com days I remember these bits:

1) NEVER CONFUSE LUCK WITH SKILL
2) Some people will cash out for hookers and blow
3) Some people will not cash out for hookers and blow.

Fun to watch.(1) is critical, I can't tell you how many dot.com millionaires thought it was because of their super l33t skillz and founded companies that ate all their money and then some. Never confuse luck with skill.

This is only half true. I'm a monster of economical insights. Everyone here should be aware of my gifts by now.

Can we please close this thread for newbies.

Trouble is if your account is hacked you need to come back as a newbie. I am one of many even though i could prove ownership of my original account through bitcoin signing the admins didn’t even rrspond once to my many inquiries.

Well I successfully did that. But had I left my original investment in it would have nearly doubled in fiat value again. C'est la vie.

If it's any consolation, I'm going to be liquidating $2M worth of BTC middle of 2018 and retiring early.

I'm already kicking myself because I know in another 10 years, that $2M i'm going to sell will be incalculably more valuable.

Then I put things into perspective and think "Well, the rest of the ~70% of my Bitcoin stash should appreciate nicely over time..."

 In theory.

My partner is going to continue working for another couple years before joining me in early retirement.

Gonna be their sexy pool boy and french maid for a couple years in the meantime...

Round 2 (... or is it 3, now ?) in the works ?

Do these pumps coincide with when BCH is more profitable to mine which relates to the diff level?
If the hash rate keeps switching, wont the BTC diff rate change down at some point? (assuming that some of the hashes that were on BTC are being diverted to BCH) and that would make BTC more profitable at that point.
I assume that this seesawing will continue until some equilibrium is met or until one chain begins to become more dominant?

http://charts.woobull.com/bitcoin-nvt-ratio/

He doesn't seem to acknowledge that much of bitcoin's volume is not even real and consists of coin mixing and spam attacks.  I mean, miners themselves can send free transactions with no opportunity cost assuming the network wasn't already maxed out to manipulate this number to whatever they want.  Even if the network was maxed out, they could just send $200 million from one hand to another all at once to manipulate this number with the equivalent of $2 fee.  I'm not really seeing how this number is valid unless you can separate what's real and faked economic activity, which isn't possible.

How do we know YOU are real?

Only times are when you can't easily replace the bitcoin right away, like liquidating for a big purchase or big down payment on something. Or you have to live off of it. That stings. And it should sting a little. It makes you a better money manager and saver.

Speaking of which, meeting with our money manager dude in May to discuss our finances, investments, and how I can use my existing BTC to allow for early retirement in late 2018. Partner will continue to work for a few more years.

I'm torn on how to divest my BTC for this early retirement purpose. My partner is strongly suggesting I divest several millions in one chunk towards institutional investing - guaranteeing I have the cash on hand until I can draw down on retirement funds at age 65.

I'm thinking it may be more wise to sell "smaller chunks" of BTC to last me a year-at-a-time instead - owing to the increasing value of BTC/USD.

Will figure something out.

I would go with your second option Bob. Seems BTC has done well for you and it would be a shame to cash it all in after it has treated you so well.
Besides, institutional investing? Hell what the hell do they know right?

Remember six consecutive ChartBuddy posts? Those were the times.

I slowly grew to hate Chartbuddy because I thought someone had actually posted something.

So has anyone here actually treated themselves to anything after passing an arbitrary milestone?

Yep. Bought the missus a brand new car and paid off half the mortgage.
What is weird is that with the BTC I have left and the recent price rises I now have more fiat value than before I sold a portion of BTC.
As Jimbo would say “Go Bitcoin Go”.

This is clearly as high as bitcoin will ever get, basically. Maybe just a little bit higher because there are people who haven't realized this is a failed experiment, but that's it. 1 bitcoin will absolutely never be worth $50k. $100k? LOL, no.

What'd I tell you guys? That was the last ATH bitcoin will ever see. People are finally waking up to how much of a failure this project is. Here, if bitcoin gets over GDAX ATH of $11,485, I'll give the the first person to quote me here the last of my bitcoin, which is 0.1 BTC.

Quoted

Noted

As stated, I made a special paper wallet for this Smiley

1EM8JhDPsvX8maD552WCRvefyyChDcHeE2

Here is the "special one"

Now ... get the fuck on the ball Proudhound, and pay your drama queen bills.   Angry

Paid my bills  Smiley I urge erre to sell what I sent, of course, as bitcoin is clearly in the final gyrations of total failure.

Thank you proudhon, you honoured your word.

I will value this even more than it face value because it's your last  1/10 of btc, this will be the last btc wallet I will ever sell (if ever).

Anyway, I see you have at least another 0.011 btc left, is suppose you could just repeat this with 0.01 the next year when btc reach 100k, and the year later with a mbtc for the 1m usd parity...

Oh wow. What a wonderful laugh, erre (no offense). Bitcoin will absolutely, certainly, and in the most confirmed way never, ever reach $100k, or even $50k or $25k (we are at its top more or less), and, I can't believe I even have to type these words, certainly not in "the next year". Not in the next year. Not in the next 2, 5, 10, 50, or 100 years. Not ever. You don't have to trust me on this, just read the best confirmed sources and look at the charts. It's very obvious, I'm sorry to say.

I will absolutely offer 0.01 BTC to whomever first quotes this message (erre excluded). If bitcoin touches $100k USD $25k on any major exchange (GDAX, stamp, finex, kraken) at anytime within the next 365 days, and not through some silly glitch, then the first person to quote this will receive 0.01 BTC.

My last offer did carry some risk that I was aware of, of course, since it's always possible for silly and irrelevant gyrations (which the current prices are). I obviously got burned by these irrelevant aftershocks. This offer is confirmed to be on my side (and that's not putting it nearly strong enough).

Instead of giving away 0.01 BTC when we hit 25K how about you just admit you were wrong and stop trolling?
That has to be worth it isn’t it?

So who is considered an early adopter these days? Is it still people who bought in 2010, or is it now people who bought in 2012 or 2013? And dont give me that bull answer of we're all still early adopters.

 Textbook answer:

Early Adopters (13.5%) – This is the second fastest category of individuals who adopt an innovation. These individuals have the highest degree of opinion leadership among the other adopter categories. Early adopters are typically younger in age, have a higher social status, have more financial lucidity, advanced education, and are more socially forward than late adopters. More discrete in adoption choices than innovators. Realize judicious choice of adoption will help them maintain central communication position

~Rogers 1962 5th ed, p. 283

 literally Smiley

I guess that means the more people that come on board, the more early adopters we get. Sep 2013 for me.

No. You go to a professional OTC broker who acts as the matchmaker and possibly the escrow too. There are plenty of them.

Are there a list of these brokers? Specifically in the UK?

Try Coinfloor. Their OTC page says it's institutional only but they do private people too. Lots of people seem to have used them.

The two biggest are probably Genesis Trading, which is Barry Silbert's operation, and Cumberland Mining. They may well have GBP clients waiting too as it's all case by case. Genesis Trading only do trades above 25 BTC last time I checked.

Itbit does a lot of it too.

Thanks

All coins up big and BTC still at the same level. Can't wait till the alt-money is gonna be dumped into BTC.  Grin

That's what I'm waiting for, but, I'm slightly concerned that we won't make it back up to 60% BTC dominance level that we were at the other week, and that we will just drift lower from here. It got down to the 30s earlier in the year, and I'd rather it not go back there.

Probably, that indicator is not as important as you seem to be crediting it.

Alt coin pumpers want to give a lot of credit to such numbers in order to scare you out of your bitcoin by causing you to conclude that you need to be investing somewhere else, besides bitcoin. Hopefully, you are not getting distracted by such get rich quick diversions and being tricked out of your bitcoin?

Agreed. I was looking at the Bitcoin Dominance indicator and it’s irrelevant. Bitcoin has probably got 90% market share or more. If you remove the non-mineable and scam tokens.... then remove premined coins, you’re only left with BTC, LTC and XMR * with potentially true market values.

Edit: * and BCH

Edit again: possibly BCH doesn’t count because the coins were airdropped... I’m on the fence with that one.

What da faaaaaaaaaaa???  Just had a look at BCH!!!!111 Tongue

It’s just the great crypto rotation. Next week it will be Raiblocks, Iota and NEM.

Notice how everyone has forgotten about Bcash?

A few months ago I helped a friend setup a Kraken account to buy some BTC. This guy is completely tech-/crypto-illiterate. To him, Bitcoin, Ripple, Stellar, DOGE, are all equivalent.

A few weeks later he told me that BTC was too expensive for him to buy (a common newbie reaction). I explained to him that 1 BTC = 1000 mBTC, etc., so even 0.1 BTC is still a good investment. He ignored my advice. Using common sense, he concluded that the only chance he has to quickly multiply his investment would be to buy cheaper altcoins, because, according to his thinking, if they're cheap they have the potential to grow much faster and much more than BTC.

He bought a few altcoins. No BTC. His two biggest purchases were 10000 Ripple and 10000 Stellar Lumens. He paid about 2000 € for both purchases.

Today, his crypto stash is valued in excess of 30000 € (a 15x gain), with the majority of the gains coming from XRP and XLM. All this in just 4 months! Had he followed my advice, he would have less than 1/4 of what he has now...

I told him that he should consider buying some BTC, but he's blinded by his unexpected gains and is now determined to ride the Ripple/Stellar wave until the end. I just hope he won't be disappointed when the trend reverses and the bank-coins start losing value (or BTC does a 10x again this year)...

Yeah, I don't know. I mean they should correct at some point, but, I can't help but think sometimes that maybe we're blinded by old philosophies. I came to bitcoin because I hated corruption of banks and government, and knew how the monetary system was cheating the people and rewarding the rich. It doesn't seem like crypto is about that now, the newbies don't know shit, and don't care about a fairer world, it's pure greed. I just hope this doesn't push bitcoin down the ladder.

I hear you on that. It would seem that in the end money corrupts all things.

Looks like Yobit has these so far:

SBTC
B2X
GOD
ATOM

Could be worth a few Satoshis. If you have the energy.

Whats important is when you can deposit, not just trade.
Yobit doesn't allow deposits in any of these coins.

Currently:
  Bitcoin Diamond, sell on gate.io
  SuperBitcoin sell on okex.com

You can download clients from github and import you priv. keys.
Prices are slowly declining..

How do you claim them?

You don't need to claim most of them, you already have them on the forked chain, just like BCH. You just need to access them.
Is it worth it?  - I've made  about 1.5% (of my total BTC) profit for both Bitcoin Diamond & SuperBitcoin.  I was quick off the mark, and that returned has probably slipped to <1% now.

How did you manage to get bcd FluidJax? I couldn’t find a working wallet for it to import my keys? I am on Windows.
Did you have to compile the wallet from the source code on github?

Yes, I compiled the client from source, instructions in the repo.
https://github.com/eveybcd/BitcoinDiamond

It requires a bit of messing about:
I did it on an ubuntu VM on virtualbox,

If you can compile from source  or (if available) download the github client, you can get your coins before others who need to wait for 3rd party wallets, and so the price is going to be better.

Thanks FluidJax

Bither wallet allows you to import the bitcoin private keys then you can claim the BCD coins from a selection in the advanced menu.  You will be promted to send them to a Bitpie BCD addy.  I used the Bitpie wallet and then sent to gate.io
Do it fast... Price is tanking as coins are dumped.

Yep did that today.
As it happens Bither was only updated today with the BCD splitting tool.
By the way, does anyone know where I can dump these BitcoinWorld shitcoins? Any exchanges actively trading them?

I sold my BCH too soon. I don't want to make the same mistake with BTG. I plan on dumping once the inevitable pump comes.

I’m doing the same with most of these forks. They all have pumps.

I pretty much have traded every fork/handout into BTC as soon as I got hold of them.
Could I have made more holding out till the pumps? Sure.
Did I want to? Not on your life.
Besides I think if we all just dropped them straight away then all the value goes straight back into BTC and these alts/forks wouldn’t have as much value. If we hold them and hope for a pump we give them more credibility in my view.

Edit: got .17 against BCH at that time and although it did go higher look where it is now.

Since Satoshi is still presumably alive, I wonder why he doesn't swing by every now and then to update us on what his vision is himself.

Maybe he thinks that, at this point, his vision doesn't matter anymore and Bitcoin has to evolve to whatever it does. Maybe that is the point... or maybe it isn't... who fucking knows.

Even if he did come back I doubt that his opinion would or even could sway where Bitcoin goes from here.
It has evolved into an entity of its own that no single person has the power to alter. It will come down to the masses that either adopt it and it flourishes or don’t and it dies.

Update is about the last one BTW :
I didn't find any git repo on the homesite, that one is one I found, not sure if legit, but the names sound right.
So far it does not compile unless you install libsodium.
Once it's compiling, it doesn't not run unless you find and install the very latest libsodium.so lib.
Once it's running, it doesn't download the blockchain, because I guess i am the only one on Earth to run this, or something.

That is all.

If you use Bither and bitpie you can get your BTW that way although they seem completely useless for the moment since there is no working Exchange to dump them.

I did manage to cash a little out (about 20%) when we were at $10K and paid off a large chunk of the mortgage so feel a little more secure now.

BTG is gettin a little pump. .02 now on bittrex. I'm dreaming of .05
Speaking of, is there a reliable way to extract them from old coins?

Coinomi app wallet is 0retty simple and secure, if you move your btc first.
Tried that with bcash, didn't work. Had to use a btc.com wallet to extract those. Possibly because it was from a pretty old electrum wallet? I know they changed format once or twice.

It You need to recover from seed use bither app. You can also claim bcd and sbtc with it.
If you have problems pm me and I will be glad to help you Smiley

Edit: if your old private keys didn't worked in coinomi, your problem is probably related to compressed/uncompressed format, you can convert the format using bitaddress.org.

During the early fork days I helped out a lot of people, I become some kind of expert xd
Alright, got bither running (on a spare phone). Set up a wallet and tried to scan my private keys from electrum, but apparently they are not in bip38 format? What do?

Are they unencrypted?
If Yes, just click "wallet details" in bitaddress.org (better use it offline, the github source for download is linked on the site itself) and use their tool to convert them Smiley

EDIT: Before messing with this, try the other import priv key (not bip38) option!
I tried the other option, but it just demands a password (which is not what I set for the wallet) and doesn't move on from there.

Not your Electrum wallet password but the Bither password.
If you have nothing in Bither, uninstall, reinstall and remember your password this time.  It works.
It's not my bither wallet password it wants, it's something else.

No it isn't something else.  You have to enter the Bither wallet password to import the private keys.
And when I do that it doesn't accept it. Yes it's the correct password, it is very simple and memorable. It asked for it before I had even set a password as well.

Are trying to scan the QRcode for your electrum wallet seed?  Don't do that.
You have to view your addresses in Electrum, right click on them and view each one's private key separately.  Open the QRcode for it and scan it with the Bither wallet using the advanced options and
then Import Private Key and then select From Private Key Text and scan it in.

That worked. Now to scan them all and see if there is any gold to dig up... Should I import the compressed or uncompressed address?

Probably uncompressed but make sure the address you select matches the Bitcoin address you scanned the private key's QRcode for and you'll be fine.

Compressed corresponds to the public key. Uncompressed doesn't correspond to the public or private key.

If the private key begins with K or L then use compressed.  If it begins with 5, use uncompressed.

Edit.  I just realized you said compressed corresponds to the public key - that's the one to use.
Sorry, I'm playing with Kraken as well and I think they just enabled trading again.
Alright, imported the priv keys from a wallet that used to hold about 10 btc but it only shows about 3 btg as getable. Weird, but at least it's something. Thanks guys, gonna keep playing with this.

One final question, I only need to import the keys that have >0 tx right?

If you don’t have a lot of addresses you could import each address that has had a transaction history greater than 0.
However if you know which address had BTC in it at the time of each fork then that should be the address which will give you the forked coins.
Good luck.

The way beef cattle are put down is more humane than that - a quick, painless death by pneumatic bolt through the brain, before they are slaughtered. They go out like a light when done properly (Pro's don't miss)

Now I'm sad having seen the way those bulls slowly die.

One thing that I haven’t fully understood with BTC price fluctuations I am hoping someone might have some theories on.

So the price of BTC against the dollar seems to fluctuate during these climbs and dips by percentages of quite a large magnitude (sometimes greater than 50%!).
Would it be correct to assume that during its earlier periods it would have been easier to manipulate the price due to the fact that
A: fewer players were in the game and would have owned larger amounts of BTC and
B: the dollar price was lower making it easier to buy larger amounts of BTC.?

Now with further distribution of BTC can we not assume that more people have smaller stashes (BLB aside!)?
Shouldn’t this make larger dumps less frequent?
Also large buys are a lot harder since it would require much larger sums of dollars to move the price up?

Yet we still see massive swings in the price. Can someone tell me why/how?

It seems you are a bit more up on LN things than I am. I heard about an "autopilot" mode. I figure that's good enough to start ?

I believe the defaults are indeed set up to hook you to smaller nodes, yes.  Not sure I'm more up on it...just read some superficial stuff.

I predict that so much of late 2017's run up was by deep pocket institutional investors (and not retail), that we may see a long period of boring market action sideways for 6-8 months. Maybe longer.

Only boring relative to last year's craziness though. I'm thinking 2018 could be very much like 2016, slow and steady.

Doesn't seem to tie up with the number of new signups on various exchanges.
If it was just a relative few deep pocketed investors then surely there wouldn't have been such a demand for new registrations?

Well if demand was really so high from the retail side, then shouldn't we be seeing the price skyrocket right now? Or at least continue to rise? Hell, 20M+ retail accounts worldwide just trying to buy $50-100 each in this one month would send the price to the moon right now.

But we aren't even seeing that level of buying pressure.

I'm sure we'll continue to see 500K - 1M sign ups a month this year, but not sure that will immediately translate to more buying. It really makes me wonder how much bitcoin is being bought by all these new accounts.

True. It does seem very odd doesn't it?
Are people just signing up but not buying?
I guess it can take a while to get the wheels in motion from beginning to sign up, through verification to eventually sending funds to exchanges.
During that time if the price started tanking it might well have put alot of people off buying at all.
Maybe if we see a sustained increase and less FUD then these new users may just start buying up?
This is all completely hypothetical of course.
In the meantime I am still Hodling. :-)

I retired before I was 40 thanks to crypto.  Fear not, you won't regret it. Best. Decision. Ever.

What do you do instead?
Some work is healthy for you, keeps you on your toes; it doesn't have to be a 9-5 type job.

I went back to school to study based on personal interests instead of studying something solely in order to get a job at the end.  And I'm learning music, writing, travelling and generally keeping myself busy, instead of being kept busy by an employer.

To me this sounds more like a hiatus/recharging batteries/changing life direction than a real long term retirement.
Prediction: you'll be back..sometime. Nothing wrong to work for yourself either as in owning a business.

Yeah, I agree that's what I thought it might have been too - an opportunity to recharge.  However, having now been retired for several years, I can confirm that I'll definitely not be returning to work.  I considered starting a business (again) but could find little attractive about that option.  Folk often say that they'd have to carry on working if they won the lotto, just to give themselves something to do.  To me, that seems to be the sign of a small mind - there are so many interesting things to do out there, places to visit, things to learn, people to meet, discussions to be had - all of which are so much more enjoyable when they don't have to be done in order to earn a wage.

For so many, the need to work gets in the way of being able to do or try all of those things. Work uses up so much of our time that it gets in the way of life.

Thankfully I'm in very good health and enjoy an outdoor lifestyle, which I can now pursue without having to squeeze in x hours per day at a place I don't want to be and, often, with people I don't want to be with.  Sure, early retirement isn't for everyone, I guess it depends on your personality type.

I'm also enjoying being able to help out friends and family financially and watch them pursue their own goals, which wouldn't have been possible for them without a helping hand. That makes me really happy.

Out of merits for Me I’m afraid. Great outlook on life. Remember those of us that work should work to live and not live to work.

Ridiculous isn't it? I lost my account too, had to create this one. No one will do jack shit for me because I haven't signed an address.... it's simply asinine.

I did have a signed address (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2143503.msg21441448#msg21441448) and provided proof to the mods but was just flatly ignored so don’t see the point in using a signed address. I wish I had one of those, then I wouldn't have lost 4 terrabytes worth of old sentimental grade data by having two hard drives die simultaneously for no fucking reason.

Ugh. This is tragic to hear. Coming from an IT background in a former life, I've learned about having redundancy for redundancy.

eg: All my main storage is via two Thunderbolt Promise RAID chassis DAS units running RAID5, that are backed up hourly to two Synology NAS' with massive storage capacity with Synology Hybrid RAID.

I've, blessedly, not had a catastrophic failure that I could not recover from within a few hours, over the last 10 years.

With no irony or snark, I'm sorry for your losses.

Without commenting on your particular case, often folk put together their multi disk / redundant setups with drives bought at the same time from the same manufacturer and so from the same batch. When one goes, another may not be far behind. It may be one tiny extra bit of security to try and avoid that.

Edit: Wouldn't want to try to teach anyone here to suck eggs

Actually a lot of drive failures can occur when rebuilding a RAID array as this puts quite a strain on the remaining drives.
Backups are always the way to go.

For anyone looking for some Sunday afternoon fork action,  I just completed two fork dumps which have recently become dumpable.

1) BTCP (Bitcoin Private) I used the electrum client from  from https://btcprivate.org
Sell on https://tradesatoshi.com (Currently about $60/BTC)

2) UBTC, Client from https://www.ub.com/project/wallet  sell on https://www.okex.com  (Currently about $16/BTC)

Thanks mate.
Managed to do UBTC but BTCP doesn't support segwit wallets and since the fork happened after I moved my coins to a Segwit enabled address I am screwed until they release a wallet that can do segwit.
By then the price will undoubtedky tank as usual.

About how much is it all worth relative to the bitcoin needed to acquire it?
Not sure what you mean by ‘relative to the bitcoin needed’? Since i am talking about forks which require no cost in BTC terms just some time to do the work.
I haven’t totalled it all up but it is easily worth about 15% of your holdings. BCH alone is 10%.

History will probably repeat itself.

Most of the posts around 10,000 were people posting "10,000!!!!", trying to be one of the people on the 10,000th page.

But then those that missed it started deleting their old posts so that their post would be on page 10,000. This went on for about 3 days straight.

This post is now on page 9805, so we can expect 200 pages to get deleted in the days after page 20000.

So I need to think ahead and postpone my post until page 20001 and then go back and delete some of my own posts to get it back to page 20000. Now that’s manipulation!

Seems like there are big fast pushes down followed by a slow movement upwards followed by another big push down. It's that trickle upwards that shows what most of the market sentiment is. The big pushes down are either big sell offs or someone trying to make some money on a short.

A few big holders here are selling some coins to pay off their tax bills before the April deadline. Searing panic dumped his, and other traders and miners in a hurry for the money probably did likewise. That selling pressure should end soon. I'm looking forward to a good pump mid-April.

Well had to dump 10k worth of mostly LTC and BTC some....panic'd like a small child! (hey, its how I roll)...but mining is drying up and have to pay for taxes 2017

I believe that Searing hasn't made a large dump. Certainly less than 100BTC.

Trust me guys, it's all over.
The same people that pushed the price up to its ATH by buying at any price with their printed fiat are now unloading for peanuts.
We all know who 'those'  people are.
Did you really think they'd sit back and let digital currencies end their bankster system that the whole world is enslaved to?

This doesn’t make sense to me.
I can understand how the price could be manipulated by buying a shitload of BTC in the Non/Dec ‘17 run up and then causing panic by dumping it all. But there s a finite number of coins available right? So the manipulators (whoever they may be) can only dump the coins they had when they bought right?
If I am not mistaken, those coins are now in the hands of other people (Holders, minnows, suckers, call them what you like). So the distribution of BTC continues.
The value for those people isn’t always measured in dollars. For many it is about the fundamentals of what Bitcoin is. You can still send some value (whatever that is) to someone else halfway across the world almost instantaneously and with little to no fee. Cutting out the greedy banks and being fully responsible for your own wealth.
These fundamentals have not changed, in fact, it is now even stronger. LN, rootstock and larger and larger infrastructure (more atms etc).
If people are just trying to make a quick buck then watching the value against the dollar like this is probably going to freak you out.
Staying cool and believing that Bitcoin will see us to a brighter future long term is a much less stressful existence.
Hey, look at where we were this time last year or even two years ago!

Why do they do this?
Quote
It’s all about money control. Financial elite has recognized that Bitcoin and Crypto in general is a threat to their existence. What do powers do when they see anything as a threat or enemy? You got it, they try to destroy the enemy (by all means). Therefore, It is extremely important for the Financial-elite to stop bitcoin’s rise so their show can continue.

What do they do to stop the RISE of Bitcoin? They first let it rise to unimaginable height (20K first stop). Then they drop it to unimaginable lows. They will do this many times. They have trillions of dollar to maintain the show going, UNTIL the RETAIL investor gives up in frustration. What you are seeing since Mid-2017 is just the 1st inning of 9 innings Bitcoin game.

Bitcoin has been placed into Geopolitical chessboard since Mid-2017. Most of the Bitcoiners have NO IDEA how big this game is. Crypto space is just a pawn on this chessboard and there are elite-fingers moving these pawns (Gold, Silver and now Bitcoin).

Why does it matter in the end?
If we are all slaves to the FIAT system then turning our back to it and using crypto instead will (eventually) render any power it has over us mute.
Sheesh, I wish people weren’t so short sighted.
For me, I am going down with the ship. I either become very rich or die broke trying. After all,

In other words, I don't expect to be reading about racism, creed, colour, ethinic origin or any thing not related to the title of the thread.
Can you imagine how difficult it would be to find relevant info on any subject if every time you drop in on any thread on the internet that you inevitably end up reading about every other subject that you are NOT interested in?

People will just get tired and eventually leave the thread leaving only the trolls to hurl sh*t at each other.

I was looking after my own BCH and BTG and have just come back to it and feel there must be a service that does all the work for you that has built up some trust already.

What i am after is giving the private keys to someone for a wallet that has had BTC, BCH and BTG removed and then them giving me back all the value in shitcoins back in BTC. (minus a fee obviously)

Anyone have any experience with something like this?

Thanks

This place https://dig.walleting.services/#/ does a decent job although the fees are a little high.
Also it will just send the forked coins to an address of your choosing and not change them for you to BTC so you have some legwork to do.
Alternatively, there is a reddit user named Camku or canku who I have used who will do all the conversions for you and send you BTC to an address of your choosing.
He is reliable and I have used him for forks that are somewhat more obscure. He charges 10%.
Hope this helps.

However, Mensa has minimum IQ requirement for membership, and I think it's above 105.

Can you elaborate how can most members have less than minimum required IQ?

Rick was pretty despondent this morning, as he was packing his belongings into the Turbo before heading into the office.

"I don't know how I can last another year at this job, man"

I pulled him close to me and hugged him. His beautiful red hair, cold and damp, fresh from the shower, resting against my cheek. A subtle hint of lavender wafting through the air from his skin-cream.

"It's just a bad season for Bitcorn, honey. I'm doing everything I can to help the price. I'm running a lightning node. I'm shitposting on the Wall Observer thread. I'm sitting on my hoard like some fabulous gay Smaug wearing a rainbow-tutu. I don't know what more I can do, baby..."

A tear began to well up in his eye.

A longing, proud jealously, of the life of freedom I live, while he is forced to be away from me - sometimes finding me asleep by the time he returns home - I can see it beginning to take its toll on him.

"Bob, why can't Bitcorn just go to $20k USD ? And then I can retire and live happily ever after with you..."

I don't know how to respond.

I open another beer.

Sounds like the beginning of a Mills and Boon novel!
Hopefully it will have a happy ending. 😃

Apparently reddit does not like my humor (or lack thereof).

https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/96mnhp/for_those_who_bought_bitcoin_to_get_rich_my/

downvotes galore

This is what worries me (apart of lack of humor or differences in humor perception): redditers are still bullish, very bullish.. too bullish. And not only redditers, but here in BCT too - no despair traces are visible en masse. No despair - no trend reversal, and I wonder how long this market can drop until people finally panic. I understand it is hard to shake out old Bitcoiners, but the new entrants should have already started to capitulate. But nope - even those who think Bitcoin will drop further, are setting 3K target, and expect moon then (in ~2 years). This particularly should mean the 3K bottom is to never happen - as too much people expect it. Bitcoin should either bounce noticeably higher or noticeably lower. Given the absence of despair now, I start to think it could go lower... which is highly undesirable scenario as I see it, as it will punch through weekly MA200 then, and also its will be disaster for miners and many crypto businesses.

But I am not really social media aware guy, and I may easily miss something. So... a question: did anyone see traces of mass panic in social media, enough to call it a mass sentiment..?

P.S. Please don't call me FUDder. Yes, I am not a bull now, and I miss TERA2 here, but I am just expressing my own concern, and will be genuinely interested in what people here think of this.

I agree with your analysis. From what I see around many, many different sources ( offline as well as online), there is a majority of bullishness.

Lots of price rise forecasts, mostly predicated on hope alone. Lots of anger directed at bearish forecasts.

Unfortunately then, price is stiil flowing down the river of hope, and it could take a long time and a big decline to change that.

I wish it wasn't so.

I really cant make sense of any of this?
So what we are saying that in order for the price to rise it has to go down first?
Why?
What if more people get in to bitcoin? Is the price going to go down?
Whats wrong with as demand goes up so will the price and if supply goes up then the price will decline?
Sometimes when I read this stuff it makes my brain hurt! So many double, double, double negatives! In the end everybody tries to second guess what everybody else is doing that we all end up tripping over ourselves.
If you can afford to wait then just Buy and HODL. Its worked out fine so far.

For the record I am fine with the price going either direction,
[...]
since my cost average is still zero (I have gained more dollars than my investment and still have coins left).

I am pretty sure that I understand what you are saying here, which is that you have already pretty much pulled out all of the amount of your principle (the amount that you invested); however, with such a great investment like bitcoin, to me, it does come off as a bit lazy for anyone who presumes to be knowledgeable about bitcoin to be just floating around in the space with assertions of "zero costs" when the BTC price has gone from $250 to $19,666 and back down to a bit below $5,800 (so far).  Accordingly, there seems to be a lot of potential (and activism potential) there that is being glossed over, if you are merely asserting "zero costs" without attempting to get into either more specific measures of your investment situation or creating a more active (and perhaps aggressive) BTC investment approach.

i take it exactly as it looks, once your initial investment pays out in the tangible assets (money, physical items of worth, knowledge, whatever) its all gravy. i would think (hope) most people in this thread are in this category, ie playing with "house money." at this point even if my stack goes to zero the minute i type this i still made out.

now, one can always argue about lost profit opportunity from this point on, buts thats another animal to me.

Yep. All gravy here.

She keeps telling me ‘bitcoin is finished, it must be over, you should have cashed out, we’ll never get another chance like that’.

It’s times like this I look at different charts from the past that show % drops from ATH’s & then look at the subsequent recoveries & new ATH’s that makes me smile & know everything will be ok.

Why didn't she take the chances you did and invested herself then?
She could do with it as she sees fit then.

Anybody thinking about buying a handful of BCH prior to the fork? (I already transferred all my free BCH from the original fork into Bitcoin)
I have no interest in BCH but it’ll be pumped because of this surely & then I can transfer all of it back into Bitcoin.
Can’t be arsed and they will probably just come back to butt f@@k me anyway.
Sticking with my beloved BTC.

Shouldn’t the price be going up then?

Edit: sorry I couldn’t figure out how to resize.

You know what I fear? I fear going down on a girl that I think is clean and looking in the mirror the next morning to find little balls of dirty toilet paper stuck in my beard that rubbed off of her taint.

Got to be better than having the toilet paper stuck between your teeth.

I'm not disagreeing with the guy. Just kept waiting for the metagame portion that you mentioned.

I believe the ideal is that Bitcoin itself is a virus to the king. Slowly consuming until the king (banks) is dead.

Strangely enough, this was discussed in some of our seasteading discussions. We don't want to piss off the puppet masters who actually control things (especially early on). So we may have to put a Citibank on one of the first seasteads as an offering to the gods.

Nooooo! Don’t let the evil overlords get a foothold, you will never get them out.

I think this is just to get our hopes up so the next leg down hurts more.

There’s just no pleasing some people! Sheesh.

Approached by an investor desperate to liquidate Bitmain shares at $1,5 bln valuation ! Thats almost 90 prc down-round from August !

With massive losses, Bitmain has no resources to support BCH. Illiquid BCH falls further hitting Bitmain balance sheet. Suppliers cut off credit lines & buyers wary to purchase equipment. IPO Canceled. Only solution - significant down round and VCs take over? Interesting to see!

I wonder where BTC would have been today if Wu and Ver had not started all the Bcash shit and had, instead, focussed their efforts on BTC. Would we have been this low or would real adoption begun to take hold?
Who knows where the price might be by now?
Wankers

Prediction.

Price shoots up over 100k on Jan. 3. But nobody has bitcoins on the exchange to sell. By the time they are back on the exchange the price is back down to the Jan 2 price.

 Cheesy

I think this is the reason why this experiment will have a limited effect. The price is likely to rise somewhat depending on how short exchanges are of BTC. People will be scrambling to put their BTC back on to exchanges to get a bit of the better price action. As a result this will dampen the price rise.
It will be interesting to see how it pans out.
I for one, have already moved all my BTC into cold storage.

Today I will mostly be plucking a goose. Wish me luck!
Assuming that is not a euphemism, good luck.  I have only ever prepped and cooked ready plucked ones.

If you haven't cooked goose before, one thing to watch is the huge amount of fat a goose seems to contain.   So have a deep tray and take care when getting it out of the oven.

I stumbled a little with the pan once, the goose shifted and the entire kitchen floor was instantly a pool of fat.

EDIT:  Good choice - much better than a boring, tasteless and dry turkey.  Enjoy!
Thanks no I've got used to it over the years. Glad to hear there's another aficionado here, it's just so tasty compared to even the best turkey. Even better, it doesn't go that far, so we can't have a massive party.
Her name was Geraldine, and she was a good goose.

Goose is on the Christmas menu at ours this year too.
Much prefer it over Turkey.
The fat is great for roasting the potatoes in as swell.

Thought I would throw a couple of Limerick in in the hope of scoring some sM.( I am shit at Haiku tbh)

There once was a spaceman named wright
Who’s speed was much faster than light
He set out one day
In a relative way and returned on the previous night

A diner whilst dining at Crewe
Found a rather large mouse in his stew
Said the waiter “don’t shout
Or wave it about”
Or the rest will be wanting one too.

Guess I am a bit bored. Come on Bitcoin let’s start going up now please.

2 good ones there. Deservedly well-known.

Rumbled.
How about this one?

There once was a young man named Green
Who grew so abnormally lean
That flat and compressed
Till his back squeezed his chest
And sideways he couln’t Be seen.

The W200 has held yes or no? Yes.

The W200 held in 2015 even though it closed slightly under it for two weeks in a row and also wicked below it twice, yes or no? Yes.

The W200 has never been broken decidedly in the history of BTC charting, yes or no? Yes.

This means we shouldn't get ahead of ourselves, yes or no? Yes.

Do I like your beating us up style?  Yes.

Do I understand it?  No.

Do I believe that you are saying that we can only go down so far?  Yes.

Am I hoping the bottom is in?  Yes.

I thought he was talking about ham radio.

Do you have coverage 12 miles from the coast with the phone?

Yes. That is how we get Internet.

My phone is not powerful enough to transmit to the tower. But we bought a pocket Wifi and we're able to upload at about 1kbps. I have a repeater with an antenna that I'll be trying out when we get back to the site.

If that does not get us what we need I will have to spend $3k on a booster.

Download can get to around 3Mbps though. We were sitting out there listening to Youtube music.
