(Long time lurker, finally posting now ;-) )

I'd be surprised to see it go down below $3000 in the foreseeable future. I would imagine at this point people seeing buying opportunities would negate the people who are selling off but of course I could be wrong.

Even if it is only at $2000 by January 2018 and rises from there, That's still a doubling of value from the year before.

On the Catalan independence:

----
European Council President Donald Tusk is among those to have urged Mr Puigdemont not to declare independence. In his latest comments on the crisis, the EU leader said the consequences would be "obviously be bad for the Catalans, for Spain and for the whole of Europe".

"Let us always look for what unites us and not for what divides us. This is what will decide the future of our continent."

----

Yeah the Romans, Napoleon and Hitler also tried to "unite" us... Further east Lenin and later Stalin gave it a shot.

...lol with the recent news from Russia re competing with China in Bitcon mining - coupled with the faux China ban , and taken into context with the usual bullshit the MSM spout..

This "supposed" Russia "ban"

Who could really give a flying fuck.

Not me that is for sure.

Not a single fuck given.

With current USA gun laws, if a foreigner comes and smacks anything precious out of the houseowner's hands, are you really sure it is the trespasser who's going to laugh last?

If the tresspasser is Vladimir Puttin, maybe. It is being rumored he killed Chuck Norris with a single finger.

About the referendum it is indeed ilegal, as anyone that knows spanish law and constitution do inmediately realize. It was the Judges and not the government who sent the police to seize the ballot boxes.
Illegal or not, you shouldn't beat your own people for: a) Peacefully protesting. b) Voting.

I do completely agree. Noone was beaten for that (trying to vote or peacefully protesting). Police had orders from Judge to seize ballot boxes, the only people that were beaten were actively hindering (not sure if that is the right english word) the police job. In fact, in most the places they were not able to comply orders because it would have mean a major confrontation and put people (and police units themselves) in higher danger.

I do also recognize this incident have had a very bad impact in international media. It would have been way better to have intervened way sooner and just arrest the promoters of the rebelion without exposing any law-abiding citizens to any innecesary risk.

I think your statement is overzealously defending the police going by the pictures we saw from abroad. Regardless only a total imbecile would expect seizing ballot boxes in such a case to be peaceful. The vote could still have been regarded as illegal if more votes ended up in the ballot boxes. No need to drag women by their hair.

It's not as if this Catalan independence thing hasn't had any history.
Joke reaction by Spanish government.
Joke reactions by the EU.

No wonder people want to go back to nation states where possible.

Go Bitcoin go.
Price is looking pretty good - a lot of funds are coming from people selling alts - looks like the market cap % of BTC/Alts is increasing again

I do feel a little bad about my alts... but then I remember I got them as some sort of hedge and they are exactly doing its job (and got me a good profit already). I feel sorry for those that are overexposed to alts but, hey, this is the game!

Switch them to BTC with Changelly and switch back when you think ATH has been reached.  Wink

I won't. That would completely defeat their purpose as a hedge. I don't care how low they go as long as Bitcoin keeps rising Smiley

It's fair enough but with how they keep dropping and BTC keeps rising before this fork I think one could profit -> more BTC -> more forked BTC possibly etc -> eventually same value in Alts. I think it's unlikely these Alts will bounce back quicker than you can react with such an alt exchange but I guess you never know.
As a backup / hedge I guess your position makes sense. But there does seems to be an opportunity here at the moment too.

Bitcoin Cash going towards $1500. Kraken won't even load.
There is a huge lure here to transfer BTC to BCH quickly to try to make some more BTC if you sell before the dump.

Problem is when the ATH of BCH is reached is anyone's guess. I was considering doing this yesterday and sell before midday tomorrow (BST). But it is very risky. Transfer services such as Kraken will most likely not be online when you want to switch.

But a BCH dump will definitely come. There is totally no infrastructure to back this bump. Bitcoin has payment gateways all over the world. BCH is a joke. Most of its value was held probably because many don't even know or some don't even dare to cash out with potential risk that was involved.

Wouldn't surprise me BCH reaches $2500. BTC $5400. And then BHC smashes down to $350 Monday morning. BTC back up to $7500.

BTC could have FOMO momentum to push it beyond 8K early this week.

Its so obvious to all here that BCH pump is Ver/Wu but probably not to the average investor. Im really disillusioned atmo that a very small group can manipulate an entire market in this way.
He even announced it on twitter before the pump. "#BitcoinCash will win wider adoption than 1MB Segwit Bitoin shortly." 19 hours ago.
Possible with fake money too such as the 30 million tether that was issued a few days ago.

The true irony is that the BCH supporters demand lower transaction fees, but they can't spend BCH at any merchants other than maybe a few obscure ones. Lol. That reality seems to be completely lost on them.

I only know about Bitmain and haven't seen anyone else implement it in payment systems or do anything with it.

Google trends indicate no one gives a flying pig about BCH, only a few (clever) investors it seems.

Really? You mean Zims will be better if colonial status is reestablished in this country?

Of course not.
Trade doesn't mean we go back to the British rule / pillaging / apartheid days.

Surely it would be at least fruitful for the people of Zimbabwe and the Zimbabweans over here if the British prime minister made a statement about the situation in Zimbabwe and to at least state that Britain is open to have a conversation with whomever is in charge next to see if we can help.
The British government has already stated many times that foreign aid will not be cut. I don't see why a Zimbabwe without a dictator could not benefit from that.
There is life in the world outside of the EU and we should be keen to help considering the historical (mostly I agree negative) and language ties.

8 is quite a large number of times for someone to visit a restaurant. Roger must really like BBQ chicken.

Why dont those damn Africans and Middle Easterns hate us? Hmmmm let me think.... CHUMP

Your response sounds quite chumpish. My comment was simply a desire of hoping the best for the people if Zimbabwe. With your chumpish attitude one could justify it is ok to destroy all Germans today for the atrocities committed in the second world war and so on until not a single human being is left on the face of this earth. Good luck selling your Bitcoins or paying with them then.

If you think Zimbabwe is better of trading with asia that's fine.

From a practical stand point I don't see this improving the situation for ordinary Zims quickly. Beyond South Africa, the diaspora has mostly been to western countries from what I know.

Do you think we will be able to use BTC in a couple of years to buy for example coffee?
The real question is, the minimum fee we can pay is 1 sat, there is nothing less than 1 sat, right? but if in the next years 1 sat = $2/3, the fee will be as expensive as the thing you wanna buy (coffee). I don't like this BTC = Gold/store of value, I want to use BTC for my everyday expenses.

Find me even 10 coffee shops on the planet that accept bitcoin and then we can start talking.

Until then... or until Starbucks accepts it directly.... let's don't.

Though I'm sure Roger Ver has visited 100 coffee shops in the last week where he was able to pay with BCH.

Just got an update on an altcoin signal channel on telegram:

Haha sounds legit, a newbie posting that BCH will be pumped, with known shills like Peter R asserting the same at the same time.

I'm not gonna touch it, I was merly pointing out that there might be movement (aka temptation to dt)

Both coins up 5% over last 24h. Thus far more actual money seems to be pumping into BTC. I'd be surprised the market will move rapidly to same pattern we saw last weekend. An indication then also was that the BTC mempool was being clogged up. No such thing now.

I sent a mail to Theymos a week ago but still not any response.. If anybody knows what else can i do will be really appreciated  Smiley

That is worrying. Furthermore what is worrying is that the release of this forum engine seems very old.
If security was already breached back in 2015 it would be wise to update that at least to prevent further data breaches.

So a thought occurs. Many of us were eager to tell everyone about bitcoin when we first got into it, but over time have transitioned to a kind of... "meh" stage, where we let people come to us and only deal out information sparingly. Which is completely normal and reasonable, given how humans operate.

But how far does that reach? When the collapse eventually happens and we become some of the few people who are still doing alright, will we still have the same indifferent attitude to people? How will things go?

It's an interesting point. I've seen complacency up close for companies I've worked for. Too lazy to seek new routes for acquiring customers or to fend of competition and often sticking to old methodologies no longer appropriate at the time.

Word of mouth is still important in this game I would have thought, a bit like what kept Facebook growing I guess. The problem Bitcoin still has I think for the average user it is complicated to understand.

But I think Bitcoin has actually got a massive upper hand over Facebook and that is, it's ALL about money so people are willing to overcome that complexity bridge more so than signing up to social media. It's already talked about in almost all financial institutions and publications around the world to the point I can imagine there eventually will be more people holding Bitcoin than owning a Facebook account.

It pretty much seems to be human nature to be greedy and want more, especially people who already have a lot/enough and it is probably going to mostly be those fuelling further growth (the wealthiest 1 percent of the world's population now owns more than half of the world's wealth).

Would anyone be interested if they can only afford a fraction of a fraction of a Bitcoin? I don't know but perhaps it won't matter if even that value can only go up long term. Even after 2140.

There's a difference. Even Wu won't claim BCH is Bitcoin. He says it's something different. At least he's honest about it.

I wonder.  Can you even coherently and without contradiction use the terms "honest" and Wu in the same sentence?

I will concede that you are likely only referring to Wu's rhetoric in regards to BCH NOT being bitcoin, but still, he seems to be such a sneaky destructive slime ball in so many other regards, that it causes me to believe that you may have by giving him too much credit in suggesting that he is "honest" some regard, because I tend to think of honesty as a more deeper character description rather than just some words that are used in a narrow context that happen to be truthful (this time).

Ethereum promised smart contracts but it was basically a scam on Vitalik Buterin's part to weasel other people out of their bitcoins by pre-mining and then holding the first ICO, payable in Bitcoin. Eventually the smart contract function will be added to Bitcoin via sidechains.

Roostock is coming to Bitcoin 4th December  Cool

So with that, what is the point of Ethereum? Especially since BTC has already been adopted in real consumer payment systems for several years.

As you read in the other thread about ETH, there isn't any. The ETH camp are clueless sheeple that just follow it because of Vitalik, and don't really want to sit down and think through ETH's bogus, non-existent business model. When you do, you find that none of it makes any sense, either in the short term or the long term horizon. The hype is not warranted.

The reason for ETH's existence is complete vapor. That's why the name is so apropos.  Grin

Yep...  I have, i don't want one single person to lose their money.

The coin is oversold.  why would people (or bots) sit on this thread and encourage noobs to buy it, when deep down even the hardest bull knows it's the end for now.

Would you recommend your grandma to buy at 8150 ?  Please answer that question.

If it was 21 billion bitcoins, instead of 21 million bitcoins, would you consider a price of "8$" as expensive?

Yet it is the exact same thing as 8000 with a supply divided by 1000.

It's just that the average grandma can't even make distinctions between millions and billions, and how marketcap is calculated, so these things are outside her comprehension. It's that simple really. People who can't understand why bitcoin price is seemingly "high" will hand over their bitcoins for cheap. They'd do the same if they owned berkshire stocks - which are now close to 300k usd each, since they don't do stock splits and the quantity of stocks remains lower than other stocks.

yes in the current market it's very overpriced.

http://charts.woobull.com/bitcoin-nvt-ratio/

He doesn't seem to acknowledge that much of bitcoin's volume is not even real and consists of coin mixing and spam attacks.  I mean, miners themselves can send free transactions with no opportunity cost assuming the network wasn't already maxed out to manipulate this number to whatever they want.  Even if the network was maxed out, they could just send $200 million from one hand to another all at once to manipulate this number with the equivalent of $2 fee.  I'm not really seeing how this number is valid unless you can separate what's real and faked economic activity, which isn't possible.

How do we know YOU are real?

We waited a long time for this. Is the adoption curve getting close to going vertical?

I noticed.  Wink

I pointed out that if the trend continues we've seen recently and even if Bitcoin only makes up 40% of the total crypto market then in one year's time => 1 BTC = $35.000.

Though if the influx REALLY were to carry on with $10 billion per day we've seen last 5 days.
=>
$4 Trillion total market cap
say $1.6 Trillion BTC market cap.
In one year say 17.5 million BTC.

$1.600.000.000.000 / 17.500.000 = $91.428 per BTC.

Bitcoin can not be used as a payment method, because fees are too high and it transaction speed is too slow. Most of people buy Bitcoin simply because they want to sell it later when price is higher.

I must have imagined the BTC payments coming into a companies' website I have built then with a payment gateway that allows me to simply switch on BTC acceptance.
People obviously don't seem to care about the so called high fees when BTC prices have inflated so much. They are spending between €100 and €2000 on transactions. You don't need to buy something with a whole BTC.

With this much money tied up in the BTC markets Amazon and Apple must be fools to not accept direct payment with it. That's my opinion. A good indication of what might happen will be looking at Overstock's revenue from 2017.

Yet banks can, because they take days, charge more, and your transaction is subject to their approval....

PayPal too. If I buy a $1000 item and need to pay 2% surcharge (which many retailers have on their site) that is a higher fee than with BTC.

No sites. Never use a site.

First off, make sure your funds are safe, on a different private key.

Then you may sweep the private key with a wallet for BTG you deem safe. I used coinomi for Android.

Don't know why people simply won't trust the Dodgy Dave website I pointed out.  Huh
I gave Dave my own private key and he said he will transfer my Bitcoins I seemed to have lost quickly to me to replace them as soon as he is back from his holiday. The Jihan Wu / Roger Ver BCash attack resulted into much higher.

This is probably due to tons of sellers and buyers because of the elusive 10K level which is keeping the price relatively stable for the day too.

Starting to feel the same way as I felt back on the MtGox Peak in 2013. The world is mine... Too euphoric. Also seeing too euphoric comments everywhere... Hope this one will not end up like back then...

Yeah... I hate to also be that guy, but it does feel almost exactly the same:

Nov 2013: Bitcoin dips from 800 to 600, then takes off. (First selloff)  Check
Nov 2017: Bitcoin dips from 8000 to 6000, then takes off. (First selloff) Check

Nov 2013: Bitcoin breaks 1000. Euphoria ensues.  Check
Nov 2017: Bitcoin breaks 10000. Euphoria ensues.  Check

Dec 2013: Bitcoin hits 1150, then majorly crashes. Major FUD bad news that no one anticipated comes out of left field.  Check
Dec 2017: Huh??

Well if history repeats, it's not like anyone didn't know...   Undecided

Crossing my fingers that this time it really is different.

I'm prepared to hodl through another 3-year bear market

Definitely waiting until the next halving in 2020 regardless of what happens. It could drop to zero I wouldn't be eating a steak less. Most of the money I put in was profit from a very good wager.  Grin

Doubt I'd buy any more BTC even if it dropped under $2000. But LTC might be worthwhile since the halving there will really change things including the price I think.

If you had to pick one, which one would it be:

1) Hold 3 BTC with the potential it being worth $100.000s or more in years time. You can spend it however you want but you cannot buy more BTC ever.

2) 20 Acres of Tulip fields. You can only use it to grow Tulips and sell them on in The Netherlands. Annual profit $25.000 but you don't have to do anything.

3) Have Emily Ratajkowski as your wife. Put up with her body and her shit for the rest of your life with no option for divorce, ever.

1) 3 BTC
2) Tulip fields
3) Emily Ratajkowski

This might be off-topic but do some of you more experienced guys recommend mining to the average guy who can‘t get more than 10 miners or should we just stick to buying and holding BTC?
I don‘t know what I‘d enjoy more. The noise of S9‘s mining in my apartment or just watching BTC grow.

Recent article may help
https://99bitcoins.com/bitcoin-mining-profitable-beginners-explanation/

I gather it's only about $300 profit per S9 per month and that is probably the best case scenario (heard these machines are not exactly reliable), and it will only drop. So even at 10 S9s you're only looking at $3000 per month. One BTC is growing by more than that at the moment and you don't have to do anything except keep your keys safe.

Personally I wouldn't do it.

So I'm making a holiday bet with an in-law.

I offered to pitch in $200 for the holiday X-mas meal that he is cooking for the family. He also has a poor attitude toward Bitcoin.

So instead of giving him dollars, I'm going to make him a bet instead just to prove Bitcoin is better. And he loves bets.

The bet will go like this:

1) I give him $200 in bitcoin instead of cash.

2) BUT, he has to hold it until at least Jan 1st, 2019 and cannot sell no matter the price action.

3) If the value of bitcoin falls below $200 by that date, I will give him enough bitcoin to make up the difference in value.

4) If the value of bitcoin stays equal to or rises above $200, he keeps it all and can sell if he wishes.

It's a win-win bet for him. I'm doing this because we need to convert more people to see the power of this new "digital gold".

I don't understand the bet. In which circumstances does he lose and what does he has to give you in return?

I mean... if he sells sometime before the deadline (therefore "losing the bet") for... ie $4000. What does he owes you?

Not really a bet I guess, more a way of converting the guy into holding Bitcoin by paying him with that. Ie. he doesn't get to spend the chipped in money for at least a year.

Btw, it's now widely believed the Jim Rickards is secretly working for the establishment. Like a paid double agent constantly shilling for Gold, which he and the CFTC knows full well Gold will never go anywhere as long as they have their thumb on it with billions in naked short paper contracts...

Gold seems like a load of BS to me. Never been interested in it beyond owning a few bits of jewellery.
I've had several people brag to me how it will be 100% guaranteed to be the standard and replace the dollar etc for years. Good luck trying to pay your bus fare with a piece of gold.

If one of the leading online gold storage companies struggles to attract more than 25K customers and doesn't hold more than $2-5 billion of gold after 10 years in the business it pretty much says enough to me.

In the age of computers "money" that can be created and exchange hands safely online / via networks BTC to me makes far more sense than a piece of gold.

So he starts to feel sick to his stomach when someone he knows has a bit of luck?

Weird and perhaps this guy would thus be more suited to working at Helga's house of pain rather than commenting on economics.

I just had to post to share with someone... I finally have sold one coin from my stash after holding since late 2013. I don't hold as much as I like but enough to make a considerable difference to my life. But with that one coin I've now paid off all debt apart from my home loan. The weight that has just lifted from my shoulders feels amazing. I've got to thank each and every one of you (my original account got hacked a year or so ago) for all your wise words over the years and kept me strong through the hard times to hold. It's been an amazing ride and I'm sure it's just getting started!

Congrats.  Cool

I wouldn't even need a machine or want to travel. Just be able to send a single text message to myself 10 years ago:

"Soon buy/mine ALL the Bitcoins and Litecoins you can get your hands on, don't sell any Bitcoin below $10.000 each (end 2017), Litecoin $100 each (end 2017), keep most probably. Hey... unless you are a vegan, you are not really gambling anything by eating a hot dog...

And, look your numbers don't even line up....

McAfee seems to be an attention whore.. because he started out with a prediction of $500k and then he moved to a prediction of $1million.

That is just outrageous to expect either of those numbers.. and seems like less than a 5% chance that we would reach $500k by 2020 ...and probably less than a 2% chance to reach $1million by then.  Am I bonkers, or is Ms. McFee bonkers?  (btw.. don't answer that last question it is just rhetorical)

Unless we are working constantly with micro Bitcoins I cannot see adoption to be that interesting to the average person beyond $100,000.00.
Heck the way the prices are now I wouldn't be able to afford a single BTC without making huge sacrifices or saving up for months, by which time I would only be able to afford probably a fraction of a BTC if prices keep rising.

I think McAfee's predictions are far too high. $50,000.00 end of 2020 would be impressive alone. let alone a factor 10x or 20x higher.

You "invest" or "lend" money for a potential higher return.

You could get run over by a bus tomorrow and never see that return. Most things in life that carry the greatest rewards are about gambling or at least taking some risk I reckon. One gambles with their money but more so with their time or effort usually.

Nothing to sneeze at.

Indeed, I would have thought it would be quite hard for 99% of the world's population who didn't enter prior Dec 2017 to even buy more than half let alone one whole BTC by the looks of things. The vast majority of people live paycheck to paycheck. I'm sure many are taking out loans to try to get a few BTC at this stage.
It might seem foolish but I'd say the odds of a good return are far, far greater than winning the lottery. The amount of people I hear talking about that and what they will do etc to the point they are sure they will win it some day, I wish they would take their lottery money and just buy some BTC.

50 LTC is getting very close to buying a whole BTC now. Hmmm.

Back in late 2013 when Litecoin was skyrocketing from $2 to $48, there was a time when the Litecoin clan was convinced that LTC would soon find it's rightful STABLE place at 1/4 of btc price. Absolutely convinced.

It eventually fell all the way back to $1.30.

Let that sink in for a min.

That Lee guy seems quite honest in admitting BTC will always be the store of value and perhaps LTC can be the test network or quick small payment means.
Perhaps. I'd rather see LTC succeed than BCash obviously.

But there wouldn't be any reason for LTC to ever hit 1/4 BTC I reckon if BTC IS the main store of value (which it currently is) other than wishful thinking.

Both campains were explicitly stated by Ver in his tweets explaining how Bitcoin Core was "stolen" from bcash and he will sell all his bitcoins for bcash. They didn't learn the lesson from November that hammering BTC will hammer even harder bcash price. After the downward trend was started the pannic sellers continued to deepen the dip until their cheap BTC were swallowed by the whales waiting to start the next bull run.

My thoughts too.

Moreover I bet that over the Christmas period the BTC mempool will mysteriously fall back into just the 10s of thousands of unconfirmed transactions.

http://www.businessinsider.com/ethereum-founder-threatens-to-leave-if-the-crypto-community-doesnt-grow-up-2017-12

Vitalik Buterin goes on a rant pointing out all that is currently wrong with the crypto world, as well as admitting what goals Ethereum and other cryptos haven't yet accomplished.

But then he threatens to leave the Ethereum project because of it. Which inadvertently highlights another fallacy: how important he supposedly believes he is to the Ethereum project, or that a decentralized cryptocurrency should have ever had a CEO/Lead creator/developer in the first place.  Tongue  Roll Eyes

Also, it's pretty ironic that the MSM want to use the analogy of Beanie Babies when referring to Bitcoin. But the CryptoKitties dapp is literally a digital version of Beanie Babies reincarnate. But of course they don't say shit about that.

He wants the Crypto community to grow up whilst he posts a pic of himself in which he looks about 12 years old?

Instead of fending off Roger "Criminal" Ver and his monopoly buddy Jihan Wu it would have been better had the community spent time on transferring value notation to mBTC as soon as BTC hit $10,000.00.

As soon as one mBTC possibly hits $10,000.00 then express it in microBTC or Satoshi.

I never thought I would say it but given where BCH is, LTC seems awfully undervalued. There is no compelling reason to use BCH over LTC if the whole premise is transaction fees are out of control and slow block confirms.

The only reason is an emotional one (it contains the Bitcoin name) and it seems emotion is what the crypto market is partly based on right now. (Ie I'd rather have thousands of Ripple than 1 BTC)  etc.

Sure theoretically it is possible to exploit the speculative execution security bug but it is still much easier for attackers to try to install keyloggers remotely, or Windows mallware such as what happened with the NHS attack in the UK or setup a callcentre in India pretending to be Microsoft and phone random people and getting them to pay for unnecessary support or pretend to be from GoDaddy and phone new domain owners getting them to pay for unnecessary "domain activation" or even try to get them to give up their BTC wallet private keys or attacking crypto exchanges directly.

Yeah I agree. In fact I will buy all the BTC you have for $1 each. Best be quick, this could be your final offer.

Just few minutes ago crypto currencies especially bitcoin was tackled on our local television. I find it annoying when someone is talking one-sided. That bitcoin may drop fast citing an example if someone bought it at $20,000. So called expert didn't even mentioned those people who bought it at very low price in the past

Media have been scaring people to stay out of crypto since the beginning.
In fact if you listened to the media you would be afraid to drink a can of coke, eat a steak, travel on planes, travel in a car, walk down the street or even leave your house.

There is a pattern there.  Wink

Yet here we are almost 15x higher than a year ago. Whilst alts collapse quickly, BTC stays pretty strong in comparison.

If all this FUD is caused by the CMC KRW delisting, that's pretty funny.  Grin

LOL. Here's betting we're flirting with $18k by Friday.

If Dec 17 and Jan 18 and possibly Feb 18 go down as the only few months BTC was ever between $10K-$20K I'd say that is a pretty meteoric rise.

Noobs on all reddits / telegram mock BTC holders and show off their portfolios full of shitcoin gains.
Will this shitshow ever end?
The FUD is starting to get to me...

Are you feeling the same psychological FUD?

Crypto has gone kinda mainstream the last few months it seems to me.
Many people jumping into altcoins.

I'm not sure this is sustainable in the long term.
Sure some of them have value and might be useful for something specific or globally and will be there to stay I'm sure but many small ones are now also valued at $10 million+ or even $100+ million when they only have a white paper, a few devs and a website that might not work well and possibly no product yet.
Those simple components never normally make a $10 million company.

It's like a mad rush into penny stocks surely?

But to me all that trading actually strengthens Bitcoin itself regardless. It is almost always the only means by which you can purchase any of these alts. (I admit ETH / LTC / USDT are used a lot too)
Bitcoin is doing what it is supposed to do whilst these alts really will have to prove themselves over the next year or two.

I'm sure many will collapse. But will they all collapse at once is the question I guess.

That's exactly what I'm talking about, that just made my brain hurt, without telling me how to use it.

A few observations about the graphic.

The picture of the network is highly distorted, showing only 3 end users! when really theres hundred of thousands or millions potentially. HIghly connected hubs will be numbered in the hundreds (I feel I'm being generous with that number). That is a highly centralised network, nothing like the depiction.

I doubt many people use a hot wallet for everyday spending. The use case in which people have a spending wallet is already defunct. Who spends bitcoin when the fees are more than the cost of the purchase, you don't spend it.

The promise of low fees on LN was also made onchain in the early days. When I first used bitcoin most people didnt even put a fee. I suspect fees will not be low on LN, only lower than onchain fees.

When the internet appeared I was sure it would fail because I could not imaging a scenario where companies would pay to run expensive undersea cables that keep up with the demand (and all the other infrastructure) - and let me use it for 'free'. Somehow it works. This time I'm am keeping an open mind. There is enough money on the table so I'm sure something workable will emerge.

When bitcoin first appeared I imagined a world of peer to peer payments with no central institutions. LN is most definately not that.

The graphic tries to show how funding a channel is like funding a 'hot wallet'. A more accurate description is that funding a channel is like depositing money with a bank.

I always said LN will be supported by big money. No doubt there will be an epic pump, because 'scalability is solved'. I don't like it but I can profit from it. The original dream of bitcoin doesn't exist though.

I actually would regard using LN as the natural progression of scaling up peer to peer payments. Consider that much of the peer to peer traffic on the internet itself which we used to have has moved more to peer - "cloud" - peer system. Can't remember the last time I used a torrent program to get data.

Of course I wouldn't want banks involved in LN but if BTC is really going to replace all digital payments I think LN will have to exist. Vendors already usually only get paid out no more than once per day from payment gateways etc.

Also this would make it possible to accept BTC in a plane or even in space, who the hell knows what will be possible in the future.

Do you suggest then that bitcointalk.org should shut down also. Given that most of the altcoins gain part publicity through this website do you think we should move to rippletalk.org or ethereumtalk.org?

Also shouldn't we be there already if BTC is dead in the water?

No but three million Joe's do have a huge amount of cash. Never underestimate the insanity of the crowds. Just another day of panic...

I reckon a lot of the FUD affects the new money in crypto mostly, people who have bought in recently and indeed panic when they see their portfolio value retreat to 80-70% of what they invested as they are worried it will reduce even more.

As much as crypto has taken a retreat the last few weeks (BTC value mostly, then Ripple going up, then going back down, now Eth up/down etc) it doesn't look like BTC under $10K will ever happen again.

It's probably not the reason. And as someone pointed out 1 contract is 100$, not 1BTC so it's not $1.3B. But I think if it was $1.3B it could have a similar effect when there is low volume imho.

I remember last year around the same time the same thing happened and BTC crashed quite hard and took until February to recover. Now looking back at the chart it was just a speedbump.

Yeah I guess volume is the issue here indeed.

a $10K BTC is still an expensive BTC which most people cannot afford to buy a whole one of I would have thought.

Supply and demand.
Plenty things have gone up in cost astronomically beyond inflation such as housing, tuition, healthcare and many IT stocks have gone up far more than that far quicker.

Only precious metals such as gold and silver haven't gone up over the last 50 years when adjusted for inflation. Considering the word's population has doubled over that time that is a shockingly bad performance for something that is supposed to be "precious". Grin

Bitcoin is now a toxic asset as all the insane people who were buying at the top of a completely parabolic pump and dump are trying to figure out how to minimize their losses and will be desperate to dump the second they see any rise.

With the one do you mean Princess Leia? As she was the most powerful Jedi ever, far more so than her own father.
Jedi Mace Windu couldn't save himself falling out of a window.
Anakin Skywalker couldn't raise himself out of some Lava.
Both had ample training going by the lore.

Leia on the other hand, presumably without any Jedi training whatsoever could save herself from the freezing conditions and vacuum of space by resurrecting herself and generate momentum in space and fly back into a spacecraft.

Today a young family member asked if she should invest in crypto.
I told her she should only invest what she can afford to lose. But I wish her more luck with it than I have had or will potentially have. She deserves a break as she has been through hell recently.

Unfortunately she doesn't have access to invest in the amazing Paul Krugman economics investments that are available.
Perhaps Paul Krugman should realise not only Trump supporters and the people he thinks he hates so much because of his uninformed interpretation of opinions and personal situations are interested in this.

But I do hope he continues to waste his time hating on Twitter if he is that bitter and hateful.

I'm just amazed why you guys keep on worrying all the time about bitcoin. It's doing its work just fine, let it do it. Roll Eyes You know exactly what you hold and how much exactly of it actually exists, that's really enough of a proof that it's going to reach a million dollar each by 2020.

Today I'm assuming this dump is due to Google banning crypto-related ads. Things will calm down soon, as usual.

Banning crypto related ads is in fact good for Bitcoin. Most of those ads are for scammy parasite coins/tokens.

Exactly, I hate them too much as well. Useless ERC-20 tokens (which only got a professional website, a lie-filled real-world use case video, and in most cases, fake team too) gathering millions/billions just through Google Adwords. Whenever I look at those ads at Google, a feeling inside me whispers "poor buyers!". Roll Eyes

I'm glad they're doing it. Bitcoin will have an effect of it on price for a day or two, but things will get better again, as usual.
Its the thirds time I heard that Google is banning all crypto-related ads, yet I still see Cryptocurrecny related ads in Youtube and even websites that are running Google AdSense. This kind of Fake News really even if they are fake are influencing the market as the weak hands are immediately deciding to sell their position. And right after a week or two their will be news about Google re-thinking on their decision and will modify their ban for crypto related ads, which will be a common cycle for fake news creators. It's either you hold or ride with the wave.

Indeed.

That way I can stop checking the price until then. (Ostrich with his head in the sand until all this bearishness blows over).

I would have thought the second half of the year the price will be moving upwards mostly.

Most people feel like (rightly or wrongly) they don't have enough money first half of the year so investing is conservative probably. Second half of the year people usually have paid most of their taxes or big bills or feel like time is literally running out towards the end of the year -> FOMO.

Until May/June I don't expect to see BTC above $10K and even if it goes above it will probably be a modest rise.

 Huh

They believe in "long-term", not in short-term like you.

My long term prediction I made August 2017 simply based on doubling each year:
2018 2000
2019 4000
2020 8000
2021 16000
2022 32000
2023 64000
2024 128000
2025 256000

I have nothing against Masterluc, Cliff High, Tone Vays, McAfee saying it will moon sometime in several years 5-10 or whatever (most of us here do otherwise we wouldn't invest our money and time) but a lot of their technical babble in the mean time has been proven wrong hence my comment.

Yes, it *has* been that bad ever since the '08 financial crisis: A complete zombie economy hanging by a string.
Eh, we're merely back to 2018 levels. It needs to fall a LOT more to hit 2008 values.

In Spain we are now already BELOW the lowest point of 2008 (IBEX35). EUROSTOXX50 will be there soon too.

And there have never been a drop as sharp and deep as this one. It dwarfs the 2008 movement.

This is way more than just a financial/liquidity crisis.

US is next....

Interesting times.

Tourism probably explains the Spanish stock exchange for a large part.

What I'm surprised at, at some of the press conferences today from world leaders is no one (leaders or journalists) gave two fucks about all the citizens who to a large part are stranded abroad. I know some people who are going via a charity to probably get home.

Ok, this seals it for me, the bio-engineered virus is a spook operation for sure. Probably CIA is only agency with access to such bio-weapons or authority to commandeer such access. NSA is branch of army so maybe them too but unlikely to get involved. May even be a rogue branch that 'slipped up' while doing their hidden masters bidding from the seat of the UN or some other global secret society power, e.g. Fabians.

The virus was engineered by a laboratory in Wuhan, and includes parts of tuberculosis and HIV. However, most of those reported with the virus dont have it, and most deaths also have nothing to do with it. Basically, anyone dying from pneumonia or from a cold is being marked in hospitals as a victim from the virus. The virus is real, but the pandemic is fake.

The ones who died in China, however, were infected by it. Since its a hybrid virus, it needs a push to work properly, and this was done with the 5G installed in Wuhan. The process of electroporation allows for remote control of the virus, through the use of nanomilimeter waves. These waves can penetrate the body and reach the cells, but they need an agent and a transmitter, in other words, the virus and the 5G cellphone.

The chinese population was vaccinated against coronavirus in December 2019.

I heard it was a Giant Panda who took two shits in quick succession and didn't wash his paws in time.

finally, the TP calculator: https://howmuchtoiletpaper.com/

I'll survive the pandemic Smiley

Let’s hope, though it’s not written in stone....  if not the disease, still watch out for crazy peeps in need for your TP

I live in the Netherlands so most people are sane here, and TP is still in the shelves amidst the outbreak.

And my focus is on staying safe. Got my surgical grade hand sanitizer. Food for 2 weeks if I get sick, etc.

Everyone should stay safe
Smiley

You probably hoarded enough TP yourself to wipe the bullshit smell from your post.

Well I bought a big 60-roll (or something) pack at the Makro a while back. And I usually take a dump at work Wink
Yesterday TP was still available in AH and Jumbo (Utrecht province).

But then again who the fuck wants to live in Zeeland province (Bible belt territory I bet) Wink

I need to go to the shop today I might take a pic and post it....

It doesn't matter where in The Netherlands. I've seen enough behaviour from people around the world to notice they mostly act the same, whether in The Netherlands, or in Zeeland, Utrecht or not. What the minority does can often still influence the rest. See Chinese wet food market asshole practices or us buying Bitcoin.

Good morning Bitcoinland.

Back to sideways in the $5xxx range after yesterday's roller coaster... currently $5306USD/$7504CAD (Bitcoinaverage).

A lot better recovery than the stock market.

Go Bitcoin go.

Yep.

Everyone's jealous of a country with the world's highest civilian incarceration rate, that spies on its own citizens while spending more on the military than healthcare or education.

Who wouldn't want that?

Yeah guess one is better off in a country where its leader cannot be ousted: Russia, China, Middle East, most African Nations....  The average law abiding citizen has never faced any hardships in such nations at all. Let alone... not being able to buy Bitcoin.  Roll Eyes

Lol TP disappeared. No TP at AH 🙈
Kleenex menthol or kitchen roll is the alternative  Wink

Well it's funny I guess but I'm not exactly ecstatic over the fact that my hunch was right. In a panic people are like sheep all over even when the average Dutchman is usually a bit more laid back about things.

Bernie Sanders will probably be shouting that Trump should give $2000 to every American and $3000 to every Mexican.

Yeah! because Mexicans are affecting the economy in the Netherlands, or is this just a master race thing?

You do realise that the one party in the USA that constantly whines about race, equality and feminism has two white very old millionaire men as its presidential nominee candidates right?
