Have any of you seen this bloomberg report?
http://www.bloomberg.com/video/12-days-of-bitcoin-struggling-to-buy-one-6gju__9xTpi5qyI_~aQy9A.html

Maybe I am just too much of a technical computer person, but I am speechless at the incompetence, and inability to grasp the basic bitcoin concept by "top minds". Watching some of these "experts" dismiss bitcoin without understanding any of the basic principles, makes my brain scream BUY BUY BUY....  No wonder it keeps growing exponentially despite important people, people with clout, saying it is a fad or malarcky, the financial "experts" saying this are absolutely incompetent, too set in their ways or too old to understand basic principles of cryptology, and even the long forgot basics of simple exchange.

No wonder it keeps growing while people shake their heads in disbelief and refusal, people are dumber than I realized, (or more stuck in their ways.) Bitcoin is going to sneak up on all of them.

It is going up in the short-term only to go even lower by next week or so. We are eventually headed to the $400-$500 level - maybe slightly lower.

Probably much, much lower, now that the absolute worst has been confirmed by sources and by official PBOC statements.  Get out now.

While the document you linked is scary official looking, and in chinese so nobody can really read it easily, a google translate shows that this document doesn't even mention bitcoin or anything related to policy, it just mentions the characteristics of deposits int foreign currency and basically is a financial report on what happened with the bank in october..... not sure what we are supposed to extrapolate from this information.

I really can't believe the price hasn't moved anywhere in the past few days. There has been so much good news, The New York hearings were generally very positive, chinese exchanges opening / resuming activity, lots of new retailers accepting bitcoin, new bitcoin ATMs going up, Australia, FINCEN Guidance ruling positive for miners, etc...  Whats the deal? was all of this priced in already?

This is just pure speculation....
But could it be possible that the sell out down to 105 on BTCe could possibly be a mind game with the intent to remind all the speculative traders to put more orders in to buy coins? The net effect being that there will be a lot more buy orders on the books because of this, thus increasing confidence on the buy side of the order book and potentially creating price pressure to make the price go up?

For example, personally I trade very little, I keep my coin off the exchanges unless I am doing a bit of buying here and there,  but I haven't ever really put in a bunch of wishful thinking low buy orders, now I am considering it! Would a lot more buy orders on the order book even at lower / ridiculous levels raise the price of bitcoins?

2012-08-16 Peak at 16.41
2012-10-26 Low before next runup at 9.50

71 Day Difference, 42% drop

2013-04-09 Peak at 259.34
2013-07-05 Low before next runup at 63.08

87 Days 75% Drop

2013-11-29 Peak at 1163
2013-02-20 Low before next runup at 530?

83 Days 54% drop?

I'd say that considering 530 the bottom before the next runup is well within reason... and if it isn't, its pretty darn close to the end of the bear market.
These numbers pulled using bitcoinwisdom, bitstamp Prices.

Something interesting is happening at the moment I think. Gox remove their tweets, relocate their office and that link few pages back saying "light at the end of the tunnel for gox customers". Maybe the exchange really is being sold to some more competent people? We'll see, we'll see.
If this is the case.... in my personal estimation that would be the best outcome of this entire debacle (assuming it really is taken over by competent people). You don't get the bad press of a major exchange completely failing, you get Karples and his cronies out of the picture, and hopefully true market forces can restore order to this circus. If the exchange becomes is compentent, solvent and transparent, would be a great thing for everyone.

As I see it, going to 200-300$ is the continuation of the long term trend. Every bubble has dropped to the level around the peak of the previous bubble.
I actually don't use the charts much with cryptos to make decisions in trading. This market is unregulated and the wealth highly concentrated, so the price doesn't move in a way that would make sense in regular commodity markets. What interests me the most are the proper reasons that give potential to the rise of demand. If there are new reasons for people to buy and hold, then I'm back being bullish. During the past months there have been only reasons why people should drop bitcoin. I see that only hype and stupidity has postponed this drop.
To me "look! everyone seems to be buying!" is no reason to buy. I need better reasons about the success of the commodity itself, not just another wave of hype.

We are pretty much at those levels percentage wise... I'm going to hope that we've bottomed out similar to july 5, 2013

Yep, yep. Not trying to give you advice, just speculating.

Wouldn't the fact that sub-$300 prices would be a major break of the long term trend make you uneasy?

$400 is right on the 200 EMA on the week chart. A perfect place to bounce up off of just like we did in July 2013 at the bottom of the last bear market.

Sounds like we have very different trading/investing strategies. I'm definitely a mid/short term trader so charts are a must for me.

Here's what I'm talking about... I mistyped before, this is the 52 week EMA which is exactly the line that the last crash rode up and off its final bottom. Also note that the low of that crash was not near the high of the previous bubble.

My sentiment is exactly this.... too many things are identical to the last "growth phase" to ignore.

Institutional investors are here, but declaring their biggest investment loss was Bitcoin.

Just to clarify a bit: The investor wasn't declaring it to put out bad press, they just happened to put it on their balance sheet because that is what it is... we all know that bitcoin is lower now than it was at the end of 2013. It wasn't a jab at bitcoin, it was just proper financial reporting that happened to get picked up by the press.

That is probably the only reason he did it - to try and convince people that the trend was over.  But so far it looks like nobody is buying it...
yeah, you would think he would hide it in lots more smaller trades to make it look more natural if that was his goal, he might have had more people convinced than just flashing his wall around

In the future, when people start to question who owns most of the existing bitcoins, then better hope that there is another popular coin out there so you don't have to just withdraw fiat and game over. When people start to look into the amount of drug trade that went on with bitcoin in the past, and the amount of coins that have been reported stolen, then they will realize an important question: How to know if the criminal world isn't owning most of the coins in existence? People will question if investing new money into bitcoin isn't just filling the pockets of criminals who sold drugs and stole from others in the past. And then there will be one answer, that it's safer to start all over on a new platform that is not that suitable to the criminal element.
guaranteed that 100% of all cash has been used in some sort of drug exchange at one point or another...

Continuation pennant happening? or something else?
http://stockcharts.com/school/doku.php?id=chart_school:chart_analysis:chart_patterns:flag_pennant_continu

Sharp Move: To be considered a continuation pattern, there should be evidence of a prior trend. Flags and pennants require evidence of a sharp advance or decline on heavy volume. These moves usually occur on heavy volume and can contain gaps. This move usually represents the first leg of a significant advance or decline and the flag/pennant is merely a pause.

This sounds about right.

LOL, sorry for my ambiguity. I'll try to avoid phrasing things that way in the future.
The correct term was probably "take this with a grain of salt, but..."

“Taking into account the existence of the 200,000 BTC, the total number of bitcoins which have disappeared is therefore estimated to be approximately 650,000 BTC.”"

So.. its basically official that M.K. is just a complete and utter retard right? Who moves 200,000 BTC to verify they have control of bitcoin and then forgets that they exist. Does this ultimately point to the more likely possibility that M.K. just lost the private keys but had an old database backup that he eventually went and fished these 200,000 coins out of after the community pointed them out?

also... how does 850,000 missing vs 650,000 missing affect the markets?

I have seen some of your other posts on this particular topic, and your thesis in this regard seems ill-founded.  There may be some truth that some less than savory characters may have been first adopters of bitcoin, and potentially these less than savory characters would profit the most if they are able to HODL their BTC while the price continues to rise.
The early adopters are not necessarily "scumbags", just that I do not see why the world would agree giving them such a large slice of their wealth.

But there are undoubtedly many bad guys among them.  The MtGOX thief alone got hold of 600,000 BTC, which is 5% of all existing bitcoins -- hence 2.5% of all the money in the world in that extreme scenario.  The SilkRoad operator is claiming 173,000 BTC that were seized by the FBI as being his property.  There have been already a couple dozen smaller versions and variants of MtGOX,  where thieves and scammers got away with various amounts of BTC, proably adding to hundreds of thousands.  (The BitcoinRain "theft" here in Brazil, for example, slurped up over 15,000 BTC from its investors.)  It seems likely that 10% or more of all existing bitcoins were acquired by criminal means.

Yes, but then those coins are sold or traded or used to purchase items, they always eventually make their way back into the regular economy or are lost. Just like 99.9% of US dollars have traces of drugs on them. If you don't think that every single paper dollar in existence hasn't been used or will be used for some sort of shady transaction, you are very mistaken. Just because people steal bitcoin doesn't mean that bitcoin shouldn't be used. Criminals should be stopped and prosecuted, not the currency they use. All currencies will be susceptible to monetary transactions that may not be legitimate, and I doubt a large percentage of these criminals are just hoarding the bitcoin, they are probably selling it, buying things, and probably losing their private keys to their shady partners / lost when things get ugly and they end up missing / dead. In the long run, its a non-issue IMO.

Ya, there's kind of a which came first, the chicken or the egg.  To get more adoption we need the price to go up, but for the price to go up we need more adoption.

The Chicken.
(always the chicken)

The mutation happened during the "reception" of the animal (the first "chicken"), a animal that happened to lay eggs.
not-chicken-DNS + not chicken-DNS + randomized mutation-> chicken  ---> first egg.

Please do not use "chicken and egg", because it can easily be answered.

Can it be answered so easily?
You are using mutation as a the source for your claim, so you are talking evolution here. Are you saying that the ancestors of chickens (aka dinosaurs) did not lay eggs?
Obviously The mutation that produced what we now know as "chicken" got here in the form of a creater born inside an egg of a chicken precursor.

Rumor talking about an insider who confirms that Mtgox found a total of 670K BTC that was supposedly lost, I wonder how this will effect the price if it turns out to be true... http://theblogchain.com/news/mtgox-found-bitcoin/

The fuck is going on there? First it's all been stolen by hackers.

The whole world talks about hackers and bitcoins. That it's not safe etc etc.

And now, some "insider" speaks about finding a total of 670K BTC? Is this with or without the additional 200k BTC that has been found earlier on?

I am confused, that shitpile should have just burned. On the othernote. It's great fucking news for the people who lost so much, and I honestly hope that they will see some in return in the near future.
nobody should trust that tweet.... its completely suspect.... the guy tweets everything in turkish language for his whole tweet history, then suddenly says that in english, he said something earlier about the 200,000 would be found... but that was after everyone figured it out already on reddit. It can't be all straight up right now.... we will bounce around and it will be a tough battle to get outside of the descending triangle.... we are almost through though.... might take a few weeks, but we are having a 50% retracement on the last few days movements. Normal market forces at work... There is heavy resistance going up, and moving up and down will help churn that resistance out.

This China ban news is starting to get a bit old, is there a way to get things over with and be done with it?

I want more diverse bad news for the downtrend till around April.

Btw I have been wondering for a while, there seem to be a lot of people who are convinced that the Chinese just about own bitcoin, but what actual proof is there? The exchanges operate with zero fees and they have been caught sticking on extra zeros. Add to that that there are around 250k btc-addresses with more than 1 BTC worlwide, I don't see how that equals to millions of Chinese btc-holders.

I also think that most of the coins in china are offshore accounts trading there because of fee structure. just means volume will go down on huobi and btcchina and move to other exchanges. Mas exodus of BTC being bought to transfer to bitstamp, etc... Even if this news is confirmed it wont be as bad as everyone is thinking. Plus Hong Kong though part of china, is really almost outside mainland china's laws, and singapore, india, australia, africa etc... are coming online.

What to make from this?
Which user account type should I select?

If you have a bank account opened in Mainland China, please select Mainland China account. Otherwise, please select International account.

Please note: Once this is set, it cannot be changed.

What is the difference between the two account types?

Mainland China account can:

Fund through: 1. Yi Jin Dong 2. Bank Transfer 3. BTCC Voucher

Withdraw to: 1. BTCC Voucher 2. Bank Account

International account can:

Fund through: 1. BTCC Voucher

Withdraw to: 1. BTCC Voucher

Note: For CNY fund/withdraw assistance, please email us at voucher@btcchina.com.

I think its bullish? an alternative means of funding bitcoin, through a different bank than PBOC? I'm not sure what Yi Jin Dong is.

I guess I am confused by the "options". It seems like internationals are more restricted than mainland chinese, who seem to have all kinds of options.
Those options, except the vouchers, presumably will be closed if the ban is real.

There may be some problem that prevents using the same vouchers for both accounts.  Perhaps they fear that the mainland vouchers will be banned too in Mainland, and the international vouchers will be sold only outside the Mainland?

This was posted just now with a date of March 28, 2013... seems to fly in the face of any PBOC rumors. They intentionally posted this right despite recent "rumors"...

Maybe it isn't their bank that has issues with what they are doing. Or maybe they have secured a special relationship with the banks that other exchanges haven't.

Hey there hodler, that's a mighty big percentage you got there.

It looks overbought.

So, opinions on what merely 'bought' looks like at this point in bitcoin's history?
Bank of America says $1300

My prediction:

A. Market goes back up to 2780-2800 range over next day or two and then collapses back near 2555 or lower on some new "news."

or

B. Market rallys back to 2900-2925 range within the next week and then collapses back near 2555 or lower on some new "news."

My prediction is that we will stop caring what the price in china is.

Is anyone else noticing that we are like sitting right snug below the bear triangle line? we go up $2 and we are on top of the line... breakout imminent if we just go sideways like we have been doing... is it finally time?

Huge rally happening now on bitstmap!

I would like to trade on bitstmap....  I've never heard of this exchange. Are there low fees?

lol.... the only thing huge about the current "rally" is that it might actually be breaching the bear triangle... other than that it is very very small indeed.

So we make a $150 move upwards, then retrace ONLY $30 back, and everyone is calling for new lows again? Are you guys mental?

I really want the bitcoin price to skyrocket. I am saving up for a triple monitor setup and right now i have ~0.23 BTC, and I want the price to be at LEAST 1000$ when I cash out, until then, I won't be cashing out, and I will be left with less money to spend...

0.23BTC @ 1000$ won't even buy you 1 really good monitor. Why would you need 3 monitors to watch the price?
$230 = .23BTC = 1 Korean 27" 2560x1440 IPS monitor... ? (if you are lucky)

So you need it to be more like $4000.

Sounds like he just needs more bitcoin. Tongue

I have been doubling my BTC holdings every day since December
Assuming you started with a single Satoshi on January 1st, you must own 8034690221294951377709810461705813012611014968913964.17650688 bitcoins by now.
You are ALMOST correct.  Grin

I think the right answer is if he had 1 satoshi on 1/1/2014, and today is 7/18, that is 198 days...

Now you can take 1 satoshi * 2 ^ 197 which equals 2.0086725553237378444274526154265e+59

Now 1 satoshi = 100,000,000 bitcoin..... so divide it by that...

you get 2.0086725553237378444274526154265e+51

In normal number notation thats: 2,008,672,555,323,740,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000

Thanks for the fun thought exercise.
