On the fiat cost of a 51% attack, those are Really Big numbers to most normal humans. There could be more than just thinking about Google/China/Megacorp or Doctor Evil trying to 'own BTC'.

Credit cards weren't originally intended for internet use, BTC is. What if Visa just wanted to bury BTC? The cost of a 51% attack to preserve their business model could be considered a good investment to them.

I had to quit my day job in April because I could no longer in good conscience take a paycheck when I was spending all day watching Bitcoinity.

I am lucky / cursed.. depends on what way you want to look at it. I'm often so idle at work that I have little else to be doing, except looking at charts and reading on here. It's not my fault if they dont give me enough work to do!!

This is your boss, come to my office NOW.

I work in network security, and I cannot claim to know him well, but I have met HD Moore. I use some of his tools, and he (and his company) are pretty adamant about open source. Open source means there cannot be secret back doors. Sniffers are very common tools now, and written by many people.

He is (relatively) young, and people of any age can be swayed by big $$$ or power, but I trust him more because I met him.

I consider Napster is a good partial comparison.

It's a disruptive technology, there's been a lot of them. How many thousands of years did man use horses/carts/whatever to move stuff? Cars and trains changed all of that, presumably for the better.

The internet? I've been online since 1981, but only since the turn of the millennium or so has it done these things (America-centric view):

Nearly killed the postal service via email. There's been a postal service in USA longer than there's been a USA.
Newspapers and magazines? Adapt or die.
Greedy record companies? Ten years ago they were screaming that 'digital downloads' will kill the record industry. Now Walmart and Amazon have 99 cent music downloads.
Greedy movie companies? They wailed about piracy, but years later Netflix and Hulu are doing very well.

Bitcoin may not make Money 1.0 obsolete, but could very well change many parts of it forever.

Bitcoin does need a voice - a focus as an advocate.

However, the foundation has little has little if any credibility - so if it is possible for fresh faces (and respected ones) to move in and push for change, it can't do any harm.

Searing, didn't see anyone directly answer this. Coinbase is more of a broker. They buy (presumably) from Bitstamp on your behalf, plus fees. On very busy times they have run out of coins to sell to you. You can hook it into your bank, so whatever price you buy/sell is usually locked in then. It takes 4 business days, give or take for it to happen.

Gox/btc-e/Bitstamp are exchanges, where you transfer fiat to it in whatever way works for you and is set up for them. This takes varying amounts of time. You can usually transfer btc directly in much faster, but I'm not sure about Gox right now.

The exchanges let you keep money sitting on there. You can buy/sell back and forth within minutes/seconds. The btc can be sent out to an external address, or the fiat can be removed via whatever method the exchange allows (plus "bank time").

Coinbase also wants to be an online wallet for you, and also has some nice SMS/text methods that work on any phone, no app required.

For those too young to know, or not technically inclined, .pif files are very old file formats, that predate Windows (TopView and DESQview). Program Information Files contained info on DOS programs. Windows used them to store info about the programs, font type, etc. Technically .pif files are not executables, but Windows has forever treated them like one.

This makes them a popular vector for virii/keyloggers/etc. Don't click on them, there is never a good reason for them to be in an email attachment.

Just as Gutenberg's movable type revolutionized printed word, typewriters were the first time the common man could print anything without a pen or pencil.

Double spacing after a sentence's closing punctuation was "the way to do it" for a long time. Typewriters (around since the 1700s) had mono-spaced fonts. In the spacing within a word, the letter i was just as wide as a w. Double spacing at the end of a sentence was a convention when typing anything.

Early PC printers were a typewriter with a serial port. It wasn't until word processors in the 80's were developed a bit past the first-gen, that proportional spacing was available. Dot-matrix printers could print it.

Those that have not heard of that were either born into the word processor age, or never taught to type on a typewriter. Then there was teh intarwebz, which changed everything...

That's great news, that MS is acknowledging BTC. Don't jump to the conclusion that Microsoft itself is accepting BTC, it just means that Excel numerical formats now include BTC. Not directed at you, Torque, but subsequent posters may have been leaning that way.

Most of the people from 2013 predicting double digit coins are missing, and the next wave of newcomers hasn't started yet. After a mega ATH they will eventually discover bitcointalk, then discover this thread a month or two later. Our voices will be lost in the noise of newbies by then.

Long ago I was active on IRC. AOL floppy disks started including a link to some web-based IRC portal. Many, many channels were completely overwhelmed volume-wise with a flood of newbies. Even though there was a FAQ link, they would ignore it and continually climbed over each other asking the same "how do I" and "what is this" questions.

Finally some enterprising channel OPs simply started banning everything from AOL.

Anyway Im back now and have a small stash of about £300 in various altcoins. My aim is to get back a nice BTC stash.

Just wondering if there is any point in trying to daytrade (not that I ever have, need to learn) with this small amount or am I better to wait until I have thousands in FIAT/coins?

Any feedback would be much welcome

I don't think so, but I don't know for sure. We PMd some, but I never met him. He had a brother that went to college in Midwest USA, not too far from me. I know he spent some time there, perhaps visiting. My sister sells grass-fed lamb meat at a farmer's market, he was interested in that, but did not make it. At the time I was playing live music at a small-time weekend jam, he was potentially going to stop by. I've quit that, but I played over 250 public gigs in 4 years.

He posted a pic here of (presumably) himself, new wife significant other, and a little boy. He and the little boy definitely appeared Caucasian.

This was about the time of the Gox ATH of $1200-ish, and he got the Lambo.

Were you around when Linux was first taking off in the early 2000s? Literally, fly-by-night shoddy companies were popping up everywhere with their own proprietary Linux kernel versions and their own flavors of Linux. Everyone claiming to be the "one true Linux" and trying to take over the core Linux dev team. FUD about Linus Torvalds dev team was constantly flying, chaos was everywhere. HP, Microsoft and Apple were scared shitless, and eventually lost the server market (but sort of "won" the desktop).

All the late comers and crap devs/hacks eventually failed. Open Source Linux kernel eventually reigned supreme.

I don't see all this Bitcoin fork crap as any different. History repeats.

Yes, I was. I erased my last FAT32 partitions for Redhat in 1999. Remember the Santa Clara Operation (SCO Linux)? The lawsuit with Novell? It was pretty much the last gasps of the old school trying to compete with the new.

Sort of like now.

I'm thinking of putting 50% of my coins in paper wallets, but I have always been worried that the private key won't work when it's time to claim them
Please you who know how these things work, ease my worries.

They work very well, but on it's lowest level, it's just two long strings of characters. Find a way to securely and safely store those two numbers in addition to paper wallets. Paper wallets do not work well in a washing machine, or a fire.

EDIT: To use paper wallets at all, you eventually have to know how to get BTC out. There are two main choices with software wallets. if you IMPORT the private key, it is available in both locations. If you SWEEP the key, it conclusively moves it. A good way to start is put a tiny bit in a paper wallet, then familiarize yourself with sweeping it to a software/hardware wallet. Sweep may be more secure than import, else you can leave several software wallets around with BTC. You need to always secure the software ones. When TX fees are low, flip it around a few times. Then you won't be stressed over moving large amounts someday.

Maybe I'm stating the obvious but oscillating markets tend to favor a rebalancing strategy (bot or manual), for some reason rarely discussed in this thread (even if hinted at times).

In other words it doesn't really matter what happens to Bitcoin in the news, as long as the rate goes up or down, the only problem is when it goes sideways.

X years ago, I ran a balancing bot for Gox. It was a python script, that ran locally on my Linux box. You gave it a +/- percentage spread, and it would buy/sell, and re-figure the buy/sell orders constantly. I calculated my spread to be 2% above the exchange fees. It would try to maintain 50/50 $$$/btc. If it kept going in the same direction long enough you would eventually run out of $$$ or run out of btc.

I was never running any big money through it, but it was very reliable. My worst problems were rural/slow internet speeds, that would occasionally hiccup and be unable to keep up on a lot of rapid changes. It was a "try it, if it works, send me some btc".  It worked, I like it, I think I sent the author 2 btc. It was certainly worth it at the time, though the Gox implosion sort of ruined most of that.

I quit my last "job" in 1976. I still continued making pretty good money playing music in bars. I never considered it to be work. It was a hobby for which I was paid. I earned money for traveling, meeting people, partying and a lifestyle of sex&drugs&rock&roll. Above all, it was fun.

Cheers, Jimbo! I've played about 450 (4-hour) gigs in the last 6 years, in addition to the 40-50 hours a week slave labor. I dearly love it, but I'm hauling a rebuilt 1962  Leslie cab (internally miced, line out to the PA), assorted keyboards (occasionally a real Hammond) and I live a 30 minute drive from any town.

It's still fun, but I quit for time to help with aging parents, that are 15 years older than you. I haven't played for 2 months, and that's an itch that hurts. There's some jams around, I am looking for one. I can run with "slow 6/8, I/IV/V in G, let's go". The easy stuff.

d_eddie: Solo gigs? No, these were full band gigs. Sometimes with too many guitar players.

Rosewater Foundation: Indeed. Jams are tough without direction. I love guitar players, and I am a bad one, myself. When they know how to lay back and just go 'chucka, chucka, whoom', and let them play their leads one at a time, it's all good. All of them trying to play "WEEDLY, WEEDLY, LOOK AT ME" at the same time reduces it all to garage band status.

Real bands know how to back off during vocals, and other intruments' solos. That's the basics.

I much prefer a band that has practiced. Jams have too much dead air between songs, and too much solo competition.  Decades ago I was pretty good at the home recording thing. I want to get back into that, after the slave labor is over.

jojo69 If you have a big enough gigging PA/venue, make the guitar guys all play small Class A amps. Point them at their ears, and take a line out to the PA, let the soundman do it. In my prime, I gigged every Friday, every Saturday, and practiced every Wednesday for 5 years. We drove from 1 to 5 hours to get to the worthwhile venues. The drummer played triggers into the PA. Three monitor mixes, with a trailer load of PA. We could go from a small room to a large outdoor space, and be very consistent.

Actually, I was thinking about moving around a Leslie and several keyboards - "occasionally a real Hammond." (!)  Cry

Yes, I have the proper dollies, ramps, and a van, can load in/out by myself. It's all physics, and mechanical advantage. I need help with steps at a gig, however. I have two Hammonds, an M3, and a RT3. The Roland clone into the Leslie is more than enough to fool the crowd, and much easier.

99. Post 31309154 (copy this link) (by nanobtc) (scraped on 2020-04-04_Sat_15.46h):

In our mostly-perfect gigging world, the drums were stuffed with foam. All triggered to MIDI modules (with a line out to the PA). On stage they really sounded acoustically like "fwoomp, thud, fwoomp". We did have 2 live mics for the real cymbals. Out front on the PA, it sounded like Phil Collins, with a big gated snare. That's what the third monitor mix was for onstage, the drums. So they sounded like Phil Collins, and not "fwoomp, thud, fwoomp". Then drummer could change "kits" for every few songs, impossible with acoustic drum set. Small jazz kit for the blues tunes? click. Stadium rock? click.

I'm curious how much of your bad experiences with players, as you have described, boil down to their own fundamental inexperience playing with a band.

As a producer myself, I find I'm brutally harsh on myself when it comes down to final mix - making sure everything ebbs and flows properly across the piece. Making sure no one element overpowers another unless I choose to accent a particular segment.

Shit like this takes at least a decade to hone.

Much of the guitar problem playing out live is immaturity, insecurity, or lack of direction.

If a guitar player is immature, overplaying is sometimes just a lack of experience. If the player is insecure (no matter their age, especially if there are other good players present) sometimes they overplay as if it's a pissing match, and showing off. A jam, with a rotating cast of many is bad for encouraging this.

A gigging band should be tight, know exactly what is coming up next. No extra times around for an extra solo unless it is really happening, and the crowd is reacting accordingly  Strong band leadership and rehearsal makes this happen. In a recording session, the producer is king.

One of the best guitar players I have ever seen has traveled the country several times gigging. He used to be in a band with Sheryl Crowe before she hit ("she wasn't that good, at the time", he says). Now he is a painter with a mortgage, wife and kids. He has a room of amps, another room of guitars. He says it is his 401k, but he loves them too much to sell any. He is a white guy, plays in an all-black soul band (and in several other bands), and in the soul band, he is magnificent. He plays a lot of our jams, and he is overplaying, arrogant, and way too loud on stage. The soul band has strong leaderhip, and he keeps it in line. In the jam, there is lax leadership. He is trying to be the biggest fish in the pond.

I'm a Les Paul kinduva guy. At first I thought that was the Zakk Wylde version, but it's not. This is an LP Deluxe or Custom (or so, I have both), with the binding, the Zakk Wylde was not. There's also quite a bit of variation on the target paint, Gibson's paint jobs did not. It has half of the Gibson split diamond logo, it might be an Epiphone, not a Gibson. Mix and match pickups, that can be OK, whatever works for the player. Gold tuners, like the oxymoron LP Studio. No binding, no fancy stuff, but gold tuners/pickups? I played one of those, the headstock got broken twice, both times not by me. I got it professionally 'clamped 'n glued' , it's still a great guitar, but a little fuglier now.

Still a cool thing for BTC geeks. I'm kind of disappointed on the METAL on the headstock. Everybody knows that pointy guitars are better for metal.

whatever. eye of the beholder stuff. they're too brutalist and angular for me. Astons, Ferraris, Maseratis are mostly beautiful and quite fast. Lambos, Mclarens, new Bugattis are functional-looking and very fast...
E type Jag was super fast. Some say it was the most beautiful car

ever

The E's always melted my heart (deep down a former/motor guy). I rode in an XKE once, that little short-stroke V12 sounded unearthly, to a guy used to V8s/6s. I understand that their big 6 was overall better. Big inline 6s often have more torque, as well.

I never could afford a real Jag, but went on a binge with several Datsun 240z. The IRS (EDIT: That is Independent Rear Suspension, for the tax-wary)  was a very sophisticated concept at the time. Only Jags and Corvettes had that, way back.  Straight 6, dual carbs, nothing at all like that fat and heavy 280zx that was popular. The first few 240s had more horsepower than cubes. That's easy now with computer motors, but astonishing for a factory car in '71-'72. Factory redline at 7k, just a cam and better breathing can give the stock motor 8500 rpm....

EDIT: I still have two '72s, the best year. When my ship comes in, they will live again. Nothing seriously wrong with them, they just need time, that I have to give to the slavery job now.

This is a song with a message
I want you to heed my warning
I wanna tell you all a story
About this chick I know
They call her "Amphetamine Annie"
She's always shovelling snow
I sat her down and told her
I told her crystal clear
"I don't mind you getting high
But there's one thing you should fear"
"Your mind might think its flying, baby
On those little pills
But you ought to know it's dying, 'cause
Speed kills"
But Annie kept on speeding
Her health was getting poor
She saw things in the window
She heard things at the door
Her mind was like a grinding mill
Her lips were cracked and sore
Her skin was turning yellow
I just couldn't take it no more
She thought her mind was flying
On those little pills
She didn't it was going down fast, 'cause
Speed kills
Well I sat her down and told her
I told her one more time

In other news, Toronto Dominion Ameritrade posted the first/largest Satoshi-free ad, on the blockchain. No Satoshis were used, nor harmed. It is just a waste of a finite (albeit moving target) space.

Each TX can have 80 characters of a memo/comment. As long as you have enough consecutive transactions, you can draw simple things.

It's cute, and historic, but a bad example of wasted space. 68 rejected transactions, with only ASCII art. Personally I am waiting for the ANSI-enhanced version. Could Beecash provide this?

Barely above spam.

I have a couple of Ledger Nano S, but don't fully utilize them. By default, it looks like Chrome extensions are the preferred interface, I don't trust that. Electrum on Linux supports it, I trust that more. I keep multiple paper wallets, one per year. If I get to the point of cashing out much, it's helpful to be able to have a hard date on the blockchain of when I owned it. I'm not sure how to incorporate that into Ledger. I know about the optional hidden space.

Opendime hardware looks cool, but it's more of a one-shot thing. Good for basic transfers off-chain. You can't easily back it up, and it may not accept going through the washing machine well.

Zappa also had a short-lived advertising company named Nifty, Tough and Bitchen. Here's an old Hagstrom guitar ad from said company.

EDIT: I can verify, this is legit. Because I'm a musician, and I saw it a magazine (it's gotta be true). A 12-string Hag? Those bent over quickly, not enough truss rod.

I love how all these new 4k resolution, 5-6k native contrast TVs that look amazing use PWM that destroy your eyes after looking at them for 10 minutes.  The only option to buy are Sonys, which normally don't have it, or a few Samsungs that don't use PWM when backlight is set to 13/20 or higher.  I think even the $1500-2000 OLED ones have PWM flickering just like Samsung OLED phones have it.

Do you actually notice the flicker?

A couple of decades ago, I used to have a '68 Chevy 3/4 ton truck with 70k miles. Rust-free, straight and solid. It had a crappy stock 307 V8. That was a bad engine for Chevrolet, it burnt a quart of oil in 500 miles!

I replaced it with a fresh '67 327 with 2.02 intake valves. Solid lifters, doublehump heads, Carter 4bbl, and dome pistons. Aluminum Edelbrock Torker II intake. I had to have the starter rebuilt with more windings for the high compression. It was licensed, and had open headers, it was hot shit on the farm. At the time.

It was geared too low to go fast, but it got there very, very quickly. It had the snap/crackle/pop/rumpity rump idle. The other farmers thought I was weird. Some of the young ones saluted me, for hearing it start a 1/4 mile away, on a cold winter morning.

This was a daily driver for 11 years, not just a weekend fun thing.

I have been dabbling with Ledger Nano S. It handles many currencies. For a long time it's only direct connection was with  Electrum on Tails Linux (very good) or Chromium plugin on Chrome (less good). They recently released a standalone Linux client for it (very good).

One feature I like, is that you can add a second password, for a second amount. Plausible deniability.

This one https://amzn.to/2unbgwr ? I’m gunna start loading up now, I just have a feeling like we’re not gunna see the lows all these so called “experts” are claiming. I’m not waiting any more.

That's the model, but as mentioned, it's always better to purchase from the manufacturer  https://www.ledgerwallet.com/  The extra doodads from that Amazon seller are nice, but realistically add up to pennies. There's been several resellers that sold "pre-initialized" devices (not saying this seller is one). At least for a Ledger Nano S, it's easy to completely blow it away and start over. When you buy it from the manufacturer, that's what you're doing anyway. If it comes with a list of words, no matter how professional or laminated, you are being scammed.

The 'archival pen' sounds nifty, tuff and bitchen, but a better way, is to keep it in a text file, on multiple encrypted USB keys at various places in your life. Keep your 24 words on there. While you're going to that (minimal) trouble, put other stuff on there. Copies of drivers license, paycheck stubs, credit card numbers, insurance info, phone list, prescriptions, car/house info. If your house gets robbed, and the paper copy of the recovery seed gets stolen? Now you have to beat them to it, on moving everything somewhere else before they do.

RF Shield? Use aluminum foil. Best worn on the head.

I also got a Nano S at the fork. Just recently got a Coinkite Coldcard, it seems much more sophisticated. It can operate it's whole lifetime offline. It has a micro SD slot, you can power up the Coldcard with just an AC USB charger, and sign transactions  (although recent versions of Electrum support it natively). It has a $5 wrench secondary wallet, as well as a 'burnme' PIN.

173. Post 45562095 (copy this link) (by nanobtc) (scraped on 2020-04-04_Sat_16.07h):

JJG, yes, that's it. I think the $50 was a kickstarter deal, they may be more now. The first few production batches were sold out. Yes, BIP39 comparability, seed words, easy (hopefully) to restore to another device in case of disaster. The damn thing comes sealed in a bag that changes color if it's opened, the bag's serial number is in the firmware (tamper-proof, proof).

Much more than I can relay is here:  https://coldcardwallet.com/docs/

I was pretty happy with Ledger Nano S, glad to see ledger-live instead of Chrome extensions. I use it only on several Linux variants, but even on latest updates, the USB comm is messing with something. It's killing X, but the OS is still alive underneath. Chrome extension seems to work fine, but I am leery of trusting Mega-corp.

Little nit-picky stuff on the Nano S?  The whole thing physically is a little 'wiggly'. The buttons don't seem physically robust. I would not expect it to take rough treatment. Nano S also has native Electrum support, but I haven't tried it yet (even though Electrum is my favorite software wallet. Paper has been preferred so far, but it was  hassle to sweep the whole thing to extract shitcoins.

The Coldcard has no moving parts, the buttons are all capacitive (sp?) touch (with adjustable debounce and sensitivity), and a much better/bigger display. I think you can pretty much reset anything/everything on it, unless you use the BURNME PIN, that destroys the device.

I'm happy to see that Coldcard has source code available, and encourages home-grown extensions. That of course opens idiots to someday installing bad custom firmware (BUT THEY SAID IT WOULD CURE CANCER!). Conversely, Nano S pretty much just said "it's all a secret. Trust us".

Disclaimer: I am a hardware wallet newbie. Nano S/Coldcard are my only toes in this water.  There are plenty of others. We are obviously at the tip of the iceberg, on what hardware wallets will someday become. I'm just trying to learn. I don't really need hardware wallets.

there so many debates regarding Bitcoin nowadays. I want to invest in it some money, how do you consider?

1. Find an exchange that works for you, sign up.
2. Find a bad habit you have, that costs money.
3. Quit the bad habit, and spend that money on BTC every week/month
4. Goto 3.

Don't get emotional on the charts or price. Buy the same amount, in regular increments whether the price goes up or down.
If BTC goes to the moon, you have done a good thing. If BTC goes to zero, you still have done a good thing.

Dollar-cost-averaging/HODL Tax Tip. If you are *not* wheeling and dealing all the time, have a different paper wallet (or hardware, for that matter) for each year. You can limit your tax liability to long-term cap gains, if you only sell what you have held for a year. This applies to USA, may or may not in other places. Different wallets let you absolutely prove that it is older than a year.

Sideways, sideways....

Well... After the btcmillionaire more than successful subject about creating a self sustainable pond in his property... I would like to ask.... Anyone here has fully self-sustainable solar powered property? I have studied a lot about it, but some real life experience from another fellow WO'er would be great.

I think it is already at the point where it is cost efficient (more so considering where I live... SUN all the time!) and I am perfectly capable of doing everything myself and know my shit about buying stuff for way less that its usual price (either second hand or surplus) which will also help reduce the total cost substantially.

The property already has its own waterwell with enough capacity to fill the 125000 litres pool over a couple days. So it is only the power grid what I would like to cut off for a completely self sustainable property. My dream!

Will WO also deliver this time? lol

I am certainly not an expert, but are you building new, or retrofitting an existing AC wired home/building? With solar I think you have two main choices to wind up with usable electricity: Use an inverter to convert it to AC to run your existing appliances (expensive), or build new, with larger wiring in the walls for DC (to avoid voltage drop), then find all DC appliances (expensive). Many do that with camping and RV appliances.

That is on top of the power generation itself. Then if you want to watch TV at night (or whatever) you need batteries/storage (expensive).

I don't know what your weather is, but you can get better BTUs per dollar of heating perhaps with a passive heat storage, and pump heated water around. Perhaps gravel beds under the house, and/or water for thermal storage. If you need air conditioning, you need a serious inverter (expensive) or RV AC unit. I haven't looked, there are surely green-type DC appliances now that are better than using camping/RV appliances. It would look funny for your luxurious BTC millionaire home to have tiny RV fridges around...

If you are building new, it's much easier to implement some of this stuff, compared to retrofitting.  I am not an expert.

A 125000 liter pool doesn't sound very large (is this a swimming pool?), where I am from ponds are small (measured in tens of thousands of gallons), and lakes are measured in acres. Depending on your weather, perhaps some sort of geothermal involvement could help, and that takes a lot of power for all the pumping.

In fact, you can send messages/voice/files through satellites for decades, with ham radio. For free.

But only for licensed members...

The license has been free since 1901. Massachusetts 8th graders were building their own gear to transmit and receive in 1904. You can purchase inexpensive modern equipment very easily, no soldering involved.

{added to} Make no mistake, I think it is great that Blockstream satellites make this available. By the same token, it is not new tech.

Bitcoin and RF will indeed become more of a thing. Just FYI, that frequency 7.077 is at the lower end of the 40 meter ham band, for every country. You need a (minimal) test and license to transmit anything there. No license required to receive (anywhere, for that matter). Not that the FCC (for USA) will immediately come knocking at your door for doing this, but it's a bad idea in that spot, if you are unlicensed. Displayed is a 'waterfall display', common in programs like FLdigi, and several others.

Hams have been sending data over the air for decades with computers, but this is a new and interesting variant.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/40-meter_band

EDIT: I just checked and in the USA, with Technician (beginner) license, you are only allowed to use cw (international morse code) in that slice. You have to pass the next test for General to transmit data there.

Most of the old electrolytic caps were just a little aluminum can, with a borax solution in them, with a little rubber seal to seal the end. After a few decades/heat the rubber seal cracks/leaks, and the cap slowly drains onto the circuit board (or in the case of the older point-to-point, directly on the chassis.

I get tired of hearing guitar guys brag/whine about their 'treasured classic guitar amp' with all original caps. "I don't want to update it, I want it to sound like it really does". Earth to Guitar Hero, that amp has not sounded like it's supposed to, for decades. Fix the sumbitch. Yeah, those Mallory Orange Drops are really just bragging rights, anyway.

I've got a little 1974 Fender Vibro-Champ (think Joe Walsh solo on 'Rocky Mountain Way'). Damn right I re-capped it. I've got a '62 Hammond M3 (the baby B-3), damn right I re-capped it's power supply.  I've got a '64 RT-3 that sounds great, but it's next.

Looks like a wind-up catapult. Trebuchets are better, but the increased acceleration could burst the blood vessels in your eyes, before you leave the sling. Don't try this at home.

The acceleration is so great, that it can extinguish a burning piano, before it leaves the sling:

I built a small one, they are very accurate, once you get the sling length/pin release worked out, counterweight and projectile weight dialed in. I can hit a monitor with a marble 4 cubes away, 10 out of 10 tries. GTFO with your nerf guns, I have a siege weapon...

You can hit a monitor how far? What’s a cube? Lol a typo?  Yet Another Silly Non SI unit?

Sorry, that's tech worker slang. A cube is a cubicle, an office working environment. A monitor is a computer viewing device. A monitor lizard would not be impressed by being hit with glass marbles at all, and only annoy it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monitor_lizard

A nerf gun is a safe and legal toy. Siege weapons were used since 429 BC, to break down fortified environments. Sometimes, instead of breaking down the castle wall, they would just hurl a dead cow inside a castle, and wait for them to all die from disease. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siege_engine

If the king sent a messenger with an offer that was refused, they would sometimes just fling the messenger against the castle wall in response. Don't kill the messenger?

Fourth-generation farmer here. Underground farming? Not gonna happen, unless there is an extinction-level event. It takes more than space. The temperature is certainly constant, but at some stages the plants will do better if it's warmer. The realities of getting heat, light and water in needed quantities greatly outweigh the benefits. Underground caverns also (mostly) don't have appropriate soil, though hydroponics could be considered.

"Real" farming beyond hobby gardening is going to take machinery to plant  and harvest (at the least). Currently that is all internal combustion tractors and combines, fuel exhaust will be a problem underground.

As far as disasters go? There is the random, remote chance of being hit by an asteroid, blah, blah.  There is a physical real thing going on, as tectonic plates continue to push, as they have for thousands of years. It really, really messed North America up in 1811-1812, but there was much less infrastructure to be destroyed. It was centered in the MIdwest USA (New Madrid fault), knocked things off of shelves on the East Coast.   Someday they will slip again, who knows when. There's a lot more to be damaged, now. Easy for either coast to ignore the middle of the country, but it would affect everything.

I'm not dooming and glooming, it's science, and it will happen again. It may be another 200 years, who knows.

I hadn't seen any mention of it here (but it is fast-moving), but the Principality of Sealand was one of the micronations that kept on, for a long time. It may be wise to earmark a small % for security. Vegas is certainly used to high-roller parties. A bunch of jubilant geeks that are newly-minted millionaires can easily be low on op-sec. High value targets, low on paying attention could be a good spot for 'the bad guys', whoever they are. Vegas may be liberal on gun laws, but the airlines getting there are not.

is anybody so kind and explain or send me the link to the DCA strategy please?

BTW, we should start something where the WO terms are explained to Newbies like me. Roll Eyes

Heh, not for you, Gysur, but for actual newbs? DCA Made Easy.
Dollar Cost Averaging: Buy some reasonable fixed amount, regularly. Be fearless.

0. Never buy/sell Big Chunks of BTC/$$$

1. Choose some vice/habit/expenditure, that you can quit or reduce. Calculate the cost on an interval of a month or less.

2. Choose an amount you could invest/buy on said interval.

3. Don't sell.

4. {Non-DCA overall good advice} Pick some small % drop that means "I could buy a little more, on the dip".

5. Examine your life. Sell some things (attic mining, @Searing). Buy a few satoshis.

6. Don't borrow money, overextend yourself, or buy BTC on credit.

7. Keep abreast of news/developments, but don't get emotional. Stand tall. We are the champions (of the world).

8. (eventually) have a goal to get off. Not sell out, but a small % reward.

9. What is your goal with your life? Be it lambo/hookers/blow, or travel, freedom from work, or a private island, we all need goals.

10. If you can't sleep, worrying about it? Reduce your position, but never sell all.

Step 1 is important, especially if your vice/habit/expenditure is unhealthy. Look where to conserve in small ways. Pick a 'red beans and rice' night every week. If you go out to see a lot of movies, pick a night to sit outside and watch the stars and listen to music (weather permitting). If possible, go to bed early one night a week, and walk to work, or wherever you are going. Limit your intake of trendy chemical amusement products.

For my own darn self, I quit smoking cigarettes, and spend that money on BTC. If it all goes to zero? I pride myself in still making my life better.

Re-reading this, it seems more philosophical than I am. I just got back from two funeral visitations from two friends that did not take care of themselves. You can't take it with you, live better.

Why can’t the first entry be bigger sized? Then afterwards DCA.... but a bigger buy gives some kind of commitment imo, a solid base to start working up on...

Of course, adjust this to your needs and abilities. I am all in favor of bigger buys, and commitment to BTC is good. I am not an expert, just my observations. Gysur mentioned newbs, so my wall o' text was geared to beginners. If newbs can make a larger first entry, so much the better!

Any big buy could subject you to anxiety (I LOST XXXX PESOS/DOLLARS/EUROS! OMG!). DCA encourages you to be calm. It goes up? Buy your regular amount. It goes down? Buy your regular amount. DCA teaches you patience, and is best experienced over some larger period of time.

If you want to have a little fun, you mix it 50/50 with hydrogen peroxide, other than that, never hear of any explosions/fires related to car batteries. Unless you decide to charge them with the voltage of thors hammer.

I have seen a car battery blow, while driving down the road, long ago. We heard a pretty big 'fooom' while driving along, pulled over and left it running. Popped the hood, the only part of the battery visible was the top, with cables still clamped on. That side of the engine compartment was a mess of little plastic pieces, and (presumably) sulfuric acid.

"Ron, don't shut'er off, let's go straight to Walmart and buy a battery".

It was an old crappy car, perhaps the voltage regulator did not stop charging when it should, and an excess of hydrogen under the hood caught a spark. It was a crappy old car.

I'm a doctor and an Infectious Diseases Specialist. I've been at this for more than 20 years seeing sick patients on a daily basis. I have worked in inner city hospitals and in the poorest slums of Africa. HIV-AIDS, Hepatitis,TB, SARS, Measles, Shingles, Whooping cough,  Diphtheria...there is little I haven't been exposed to in my profession. And with notable exception of SARS, very little has left me feeling vulnerable, overwhelmed or downright scared.

I am not scared of Covid-19. I am concerned about the implications of a novel infectious agent that has spread the world over and continues to find new footholds in different soil. I am rightly concerned for the welfare of those who are elderly, in frail health or disenfranchised who stand to suffer mostly, and disproportionately, at the hands of this new scourge. But I am not scared of Covid-19.

What I am scared about is the loss of reason and wave of fear that has induced the masses of society into a spellbinding spiral of panic, stockpiling obscene quantities of anything that could fill a bomb shelter adequately in a post-apocalyptic world. I am scared of the N95 masks that are stolen from hospitals and urgent care clinics where they are actually needed for front line healthcare providers and instead are being donned in airports, malls, and coffee lounges, perpetuating even more fear and suspicion of others.

I am scared that our hospitals will be overwhelmed with anyone who thinks they " probably don't have it but may as well get checked out no matter what because you just never know..." and those with heart failure, emphysema, pneumonia and strokes will pay the price for overfilled ER waiting rooms with only so many doctors and nurses to assess.

I am scared that travel restrictions will become so far reaching that weddings will be canceled, graduations missed and family reunions will not materialize. And well, even that big party called the Olympic Games...that could be kyboshed too. Can you even imagine?

I'm scared those same epidemic fears will limit trade, harm partnerships in multiple sectors, business and otherwise and ultimately culminate in a global recession.

But mostly, I'm scared about what message we are telling our kids when faced with a threat. Instead of reason, rationality, openmindedness and altruism, we are telling them to panic, be fearful, suspicious, reactionary and self-interested.

Covid-19 is nowhere near over. It will be coming to a city, a hospital, a friend, even a family member near you at some point. Expect it. Stop waiting to be surprised further. The fact is the virus itself will not likely do much harm when it arrives. But our own behaviors and "fight for yourself above all else" attitude could prove disastrous.

I implore you all. Temper fear with reason, panic with patience and uncertainty with education. We have an opportunity to learn a great deal about health hygiene and limiting the spread of innumerable transmissible diseases in our society. Let's meet this challenge together in the best spirit of compassion for others, patience, and above all, an unfailing effort to seek truth, facts and knowledge as opposed to conjecture, speculation and catastrophizing.

Facts not fear. Clean hands. Open hearts.
Our children will thank us for it.
