Looking back to the 2011 bubble and seeing a price of 31USD, that's still a bargain to buy then and hold.

All this shorting (now) is too risky and I'm glad what I did sell was over 100. Selling now seems almost as daft to me as buying at 200USD to try to "catch the top" and make a profit.

Good luck to all those "short term bears", I can see plenty of blood in the coming weeks.

Gee I can see this bounce lasting...

If you're hoping for a price rise, be careful what you wish for regarding the bid wall. Many times a large bid wall has come up, it has either been eaten and caused panic sells, or been a fake wall designed to get people to place bids above it, only so they can pull it and sell into all those accumulated bids at a higher price than they would have gotten otherwise.

No I'm just hoping for a slower price fall. Without large forces thinking a rally at these prices is achievable this could get nasty very quickly. We've gone down too fast without a considerable bounce in my opinion, that just ads to the lack of confidence which is going to make this spectacular when the fireworks kick off in a week or so.

Surprised this rally hasn't been killed quicker, all the bears sleeping?

Or are they waiting for bids to build? There's 3.5kBTC above 70. That looks like tasty bear food.

Seen more buy pressure today but it's not convincing of a rally.

is there ANY reason why coins today should be worth 20-30% more than yesterday? I don't see any.  Huh

Is there ANY reasons why coins today should be worth 6-fold more than in January?

Of course not.

They're worth so much more, it's just the price that's lagging. Mispricing in markets creates opportunity. Don't be one of those people that actually knew of Bitcoin in it's early days and not captilize on this knowledge.

What? A commodity that inflates at around 10% per year, which market cap is overwhelmingly overvalued due to speculation, which actual uses currently are unknown and unneeded for the average joe and what little use it is used solely for is illicit activities.

Please expand on why you think bitcoin is anything more than an anti-distablishment hype train?

(I'm a long term bull btw, but we are not ready for a billion dollar market cap. SoonTM )

My 2 cents

In short because it's the most perfect form of money that has ever existed. Eventuslly mr. Market will recognise this and the market will reflect the true value.

Check out Erik Voorhees' articles if you like to reaf a clearly written explanation why Bitcoin is the best money thus far.

I agree, bitcoin is revolutionary. It IS the best form of money that has ever existed.

However, it is still in its infancy whatever way you look at it. For it to BE money it needs a stable price, who is going to trade with something with no fixed value or at least some what of a guarantee of your spending power down the line. The ONLY way to get round this is to stop all this crazy speculation that it's bigger than Jesus/the internet etc and actually use it as money.

Until it is actually used as money en masse all this volatility is just delaying it being mass adopted. Yes a bubble is great for bitcoin, for publicity and adoption, but it NEEDS to deflate and have steady growth in order to compete as money.

All this bullish sentiment that its value right now is in tripple digits or that it will some day be the global currency is irrelevant. Bitcoin needs to walk before it can run and with the only people jumping on the train are expecting it. The price ends up being 99% speculation and 1% asset, this only helps to stunt its growth as a viable currency.

I think you are mistakingly overvalueing the impact of price.

When people first criticize bitcoin, who actually understand it and don't scream ponzi, initially outline the fact that spending power is of utmost importance in a currency.

I don't want to be paid at the end of the month in something that can lose or gain a significant portion of wealth in a very short space of time.

Price would follow after mass adoption but why would the mass adopt a volatile currency?

And how are big companies like Apple going to use bitcoin as a currency when it has a market cap of 1 billion?  It would be the equivalent of an elephant trying to get in through the dog-door.  A big market cap helps the viability of the currency.

Trying to get straight into the claws of an un-innovative (no idea the Antonym?) company like apple is the wrong approach. We need to build companies from the ground up that USE the currency like paypal would, for example. Whether through adoption or creation.

That was not my point.  My point was that for certain companies to realistically accept bitcoins, the market cap needs to be higher so that when they put in or take out value, the volatility/slippage doesn't hurt them.  "Evil" speculators that put their money in bitcoin will raise the marketcap and thereby help bitcoins transactional use (although emotional trading with buying high and selling low obviously has a negative effect through increasing volatility, but I don't think this can be helped as it is human nature).  So good traders are actually the best for bitcoin :-).

So what, we have a huge market cap based around what? Its use to transfer wealth cheaply and quickly through the internet? Big companies are already heavily tied with the traditional banking system. They are not prone to change and they certainly wont for a 5 year old currency with an inflated market cap based on speculation. We need to build from the ground up. Let the companies see people wanting to spend bitcoins and they will follow. Trying to shortcut it is not helping adoption.

Bitcoin = Currency??

 Grin

BitcoinDelusiontalk.com

I transact value with other people all over the world by transferring bitcoins.  If you think that's not a currency, then you are the delusional one.

I can trade my TV for something else on Craigslist or anywhere in the world.  Does that make my TV a currency?

A TV has value because of non-monetary uses.  Bitcoin only has value because of monetary use.
Or what is your definition of a currency?

Gold has non-monetary uses and has been used as a barter of exchange for millennia Wink

It's tough to define, I'd say a widely/generally accepted payment = a currency. People call it cash of the internet so I guess that counts.

Quote from: Its About Sharing on July 08, 2013, 05:32:17 PM

Tell that to people who's currency is more volatile than BTC. As well as more manipulated. See Argentina. Many of us feel BTC will first see adoption outside America, waaaay outside.

The volatility of BTC is in large part a function of the instability of the current economic system in shambles all over the world. If economies were solid then BTC would still be at $1.
It will take time to find a price. Perhaps it won't even be with BTC, or at least not BTC in its current state.

That sounds like a good assessment, but surely in 3rd world countries where it is less digitised bringing the digital age will have much more growing pains? Wouldn't they be easier just doing what Zimbabwe has done and use more global currencies?

I mean, we're talking about a country where 1/3rd of its population don't have access to the internet.

I think BTC might be a complimentary currency (e.g. with M-Pesa http://memeburn.com/2013/07/kipochi-brings-bitcoin-to-africa-through-m-pesa/) and used in an app like Kipochi. I really think that is the biggest news we've seen for BTC in a while but most people don't see how big it can be. edit - let BTC be used on non smart phones with apps like Kipochi pretty much solves a lot of technological problems.

I do agree with you though in that the volatility is indeed a problem. We are very early in the game BUT at the same time I have a feeling the maturity of usefulness will be reached in ways many of us can't fathom. Remember, BTC is a Black Swan technology of sorts so it's growth will be likewise imo. Kipochi can very well be our first offspring...

Regarding your on topic point  Grin
We have moved from a low of $65 (which I almost felt like jumping into for the bounce but don't like entering at the bottoms of big red candles) to a high of 80.
Perhaps we consolidate a bit and then head back down. It seems like this move up was purely technical.

I do see more decent sized buys coming in but in large part the move was started by a huge buy of 4500. I don't like entering a rally based on a large player. Perhaps it is petering out.
I will see what we do around $85 if we get that high.

IAS

edit - Forgot your question. Yeah, I guess it would be "easier" and use global currencies but some governments won't allow that. I still go back to the complimentary thing. We don't need BTC to be adopted by mass amounts of people (% wise) to be successful (money wise). Think about just one small country using it, or just 1% of people in a few countries as a store of wealth - to move money - for online transactions, etc. That would be huge. Should BTC actually take off and be an internet currency "standard", another doozy.

+1

This news from Kapochi is fantastic, it's exactly what we need.

people complain when its volatile, others complain when its not. looks like always someone will be unhappy.

Volatility is great for a deflating bubble, a quick sharp deflation is much better for the market than a steady long slide, not only do we lose investors but recovery is so much longer. At almost all other times large volatility is really bad for bitcoin.

I bought back in at 65 (Bitstamp). 63-64 has been tested 3 times and has held. My guess is that the price will rally for a while now.

A quick update.

I sold at just under 75 on Bitstamp yesterday, as there seems to be little in the way of upward momentum. There now seems to be a vague triple bottom and/or downward triangle forming around 70. I suspect selling pressure will break through this and we will push back down towards 65 and possibly lower.

I think I will sit on my hands and buy when it feels right, rather than putting an order at this time. There doesn't seem to be much support above 60 on the books and I'm unsure whether 65 would survive another sell off.

If only I had done the same. Funny, your numbers matched mine...

Thanks for sharing your observations with selling pressure as I haven't been watching much. I have seen the larger blocks in buys stagnate though.

And look at this double double reverse bottom descending triangle. What do you all think?  Grin

I think the tension to the drop is killing me, get it over with bears.

interesting part is that people who are waiting for confirmation of trend reversal (which i think already happend and bubble deflated at $65) for $120 mark then they will have to buy back half the coins they could have at $65.

People here often show 2011 bubble to compare to 2013 one but they seem to don't see that no matter what, after one bubble there will be another 10 times bigger. This was the case 3 times now and will happen again. Then why one is trying to hit the bottom to buy if they can just buy now, sit, relax and enjoy the ride to the top? They will profit anyway and trying to hit bottom may as well end up in losing coins.

Doesn't everyone want to maximise their wealth?

If you can buy at $50, rather than $100, you are going to have double the wealth/Bitcoins, no matter what the price ends up being.

That doesn't mean everyone has to buy/sell. You should do what feels best for you.

of course they want to maximise profits but the problem i am pointing to is that nobody know when bear market will end. There is no chart who will tell you this. All i read here is just pure wishes.

People selling their last bitcoin to get out of the 'scheme' screaming how much they have lost will be a good indicator.

if this will happen. There is also 50% chance people will be hitting wall with their heads because they didn't bought and the price for some reason sky rocketed. There is plenty of reasons in the world to make it happen. And there are people who bought pizza for 10000 bitcoins and now are pretending that's ok for them ...

It's like trying to explain to people Martingale isn't a profitable strategy. They say they will win most of the time (which is true) but the associated loss that happens quite infrequently is so large that it outweighs all the small wins. If people don't get it I doubt they ever will. I'm holding Smiley

If everybody had both your mentalities, the price would inflate beyond recognition and the whole experiment would hyper-deflate into oblivion. Yes you would be rich. Congratulations at your profits. But the use of bitcoins for what it is designed for would be lost. If people were not willing to sell 10'000 bitcoins for two pizzas we would not be here today.

Don't fool yourself. Around 950 the first people start dumping and around 970 the sheep will completely panic and sell till we're back at 900. At least that is most likely to happen.

I mean over a week or two, a few big buys now will reverse the down-trend we've had since the 6th.

It was never a downtrend from the 6th - it was a shift towards sideways movement for a couple of weeks.

Looks like a downtrend to me, also looking at forum posts/threads the consensus was we would revisit 600-700 by now.

You might consider that this Bot is probably buying his own coins/asks. Since the asks gets pushed lower every time a normal user(if there should be any left there) are putting a ask order in between. Without this Bot volume would go down about 80% more. Putting Gox in a league with Cryptsy - Kraken, lol.

I still trade on Gox among others I know, it's been a pretty flawless service besides April.

100% to increase my btc holdings mind you, but I think there's still a few who have faith.

Besides, with a 10% increase in price, if you don't mind waiting a few weeks (if you think the price will slowly decline down for example) it's a smart move to buy on another exchange and withdraw from Gox, easy arbitrage.

Mtgox has no verified USD withdrawals since Sept 2013. Even EU withdrawals is like once a month for a small amount.

had $2000 left there myself. waited over two months before I gave up, cut my losses and converted back to BTC at their outrageously inflated prices, but at least i got something. FtGox is dying running out of coins to trade. that's hwy the price is so high there. I lost close to 20%.  Mark pissed away a billion dollar opportunity with that company.

The only possible use for gox anymore is to trade on volatility to increase your BTC position, then move the BTC elsewhere. That begs the question though, why not just do the same thing somewhere else?

I find gox to be more volatile, if you're right then there will be a greater panic to get money out, more panic, more volatility. And people like staying if they are comfortable, most people only had to deal with the lag.

Every other exchange looks poised for a down move IMO, except silly Gox levitating $130 above all others.

What, you mean that rigged exchanged dominated almost entirely by bot trading with the odd hapless soul buying coins in order to transfer to the Stamp where he can actually get his fiat back at a 10% loss?

Yeah, I noticed that on Gox, an all important resistance level was taken out which seems to have lead to a lot of fools market analysts forecasting a big rally over the next few days. But as you say, on the exchanges where BTC can actually be exchanged for fiat that can actually be withdrawn to a bank account, a drop back down to $700s looks a near certainty.

So who do I believe to most realistically represent the workings of global Bitcoin trade, Gox, or all the other ones?

Today, I doubled my short position at $832, if that helps clarify my position.

To me the downtrend from the 6th to the ~18th of Janurary failed, coupled with the fresh new fiat from the good news, overstock for example, will be hitting the exchanges about now.

Gox is just leading the charge like usual.

When capitulation does happen we will bounce back, people lose faith in other bubbles like tulips because they are not backed by fundamentals when things look most bearish.

Something with great fundamentals like Bitcoin or BitTorrent (if it had a value) do bubble from runaway optimism/profits but they will be backed in the end by the usability. Until that stops Bitcoin will be bullish.

I don't think the next rally will see nearly the scale of what we saw in 2013, things will look less explosive and more like growth of a maturing market, in 2014 the test for Bitcoin is to be established for the mass market, and with that, feared/oppressed by those who control it.

Well considering the 1200 peak was after the takeover of SR it's pretty difficult for it to be the first time we have had that volume.

The new Ripple that the banks will control will be fantastic, make a new Ripple worth $1 (and issue as needed /funded) and use it to transfer bank funds around the world.

As a store of value or worth Ripple is worthless, IMO.

This guy gets it, once you have a centrally controlled currency (like ripple) the incentive of the central control isn't on increasing the worth of each unit (the ripple), can you imagine a bank doing this?

One good sign (that could mean more dumping) is that the bid depth is really building, and I love how most of the bids at Bitstamp and Bitfinex are down to $200, people seem to believe that the price wont drop lower than that, yet they don't think this is a reversal (or the bottom)otherwise we would see more market buys...

So for the ones here that say it is reversal and it is moon time, simply vote with your orders, because you are doing a bad job if you already did.

I have seen bigger and more market buys this last week than the previous 5 months combined.

Such a big increase in volume is a pretty good trend reversal indicator.

Can we just limit bitcoin mining to something only standard GPU's can do?

Or at least something everybody with a PC can have a reasonably even share in?

I loved bitcoin years ago because I used to mine myself, and even with only a little reward, it helped me understand it all. But today it is silly unless you can invest 5 figures +++.

And as we push to even faster ASICs there seems to be a trend of centralisation being set up in the bitcoin mining, where one person/group can own a large chunk of hashing power, and this is only getting worse over time.

With this added centralisation comes the added risk of malicious actors and a distrust in the very verification process that is so sound and secure.

Are we looking for a solution to this or is the consensus that it is either inevitable or not a threat?

I understand that it's possible they get a bunch of banks aboard, but that's more like a slim chance, a gamble. How many they got now two, three tiny ones?

yep, 3 tiny one are officialy onboard but this means a lot. Rabbobank is also testing and national city bank too  and they are not tiny.

But this is true Ripple will attract first small banks. But I'm telling you 100banks the next 12months is really possible.

The only way you can profit is by holding XRP, yet large amounts of it can be released onto the market, or created at any time. You can only profit if they let you, and they won't allow outsiders to reap huge profits for their hard work (assuming Ripple makes huge profits long term - which is very debatable).

still a very very bad understanding of ripple...

But it's true.

It's like thinking you'll benefit by holding onto the dollar..

I think we are all aware the price has fallen 76% from the ATH.

I mean prove we are still in a bear market.

It is inherently impossible to prove anything that's based on pure speculation and public opinion.

eg. You can't prove it's a bull market either.

Actually yes, more bids than asks, price is going up, and indicators are going up

So it's either a trap and the large sells are coming soon or its a trend reversal and we're up from here

PS, about the distribution of MtGOX spoils:

They supposedly recovered 200 000 coins, 650 000 coins are missing.  So unless you for some reason are very high up on the list of creditors, them coins are gone. Kraken is not going to empty their stash for Gox customers.

There is no queue, except that defaulted employee salaries are to be paid first, then suppliers etc., then the clients, and the managers last.  The first two have been paid already, and there will be nothing left for the managers anyway.

Among the clients, Kobayashi will first gather and validate all the claims, then he will divide the remaining assets proportional to the claims.  So everybody should receive around 20% of their claims.  However, it is not clear yet how the claims will be defined.
Okay, sounds good.

I've got a little under 20 goxbtc, where can I file a claim?

Sorry to be degenerate but the mtgox site with all it's legal lingo is confusing as fuck, and I've found nowhere that explains it easily.

Can anyone here come up with a scenario how keeping gox money at silk road could have raised the price?

My guess is that (assuming this whole thing is true) Mark used the bitcoins from SR to pump bitcoin on gox, then when shit hit the fan he seppuku'd SR with the help of the FBI (remember this caused the huge bubble up to $1k)

It's sadly actually looking plausible but I still remain sceptical about the whole thing, DPR is a VERY opinionated and idealistic guy which Mark really isn't, their characters just don't match in my opinion.

Unless it was all a ruse..

Are you basing this on the interview DPR gave, which some canadian dude did on his behalf? Someone with strong libertarian views.
Why would he need bitcoin from SR to pump on gox? He supposively could have been doing anything on gox?

You've got to ask yourself, why?

Why would Mark, with an already stressful plate, be active on both SR and Gox even as the troubles kick in.

It just doesn't add up, I think Ross is using a this as the trump card he's had up his sleeve from the start. He hinted on it last year.

I'm not buying.

2 digit prices are such a selfish request.

It's almost a one way street, literally nobody will think bitcoin is a good investment if the bubble collapses at a lower rate than when it started, after a full year of VC's and overall pretty good news.

The CCMF are the dying gasp of a bull that's bean beaten with both ends of the stick for a full year in a row.

Tip: Bitcoin is not an investment.
Bitcoin is a digital currency.

Think about Bitcoin as an investment and you will fail.

That "investment" has bought me a new car, motorbike and paid me fees to go to university.

The only fail here is the moronic mentality that we will endlessly spiral lower, it's almost as bad as the bulls who think we go up forever without a correction.

Nothing is being stolen.  Nothing will be taken from you if you don't use the dollar for stuff it was never intended to do, like trying to use it as a permanent store of value.
You might as well bitch about the $ being a gyp because it makes a lousy pet.
It's not meant to be matress stuffing any more than it's meant to be a pet.
What level of lunacy am I up against here?  Do you complain about milk being a ripoff because it doesn't last for years?

>Nothing is being stolen.

Yes it is, your purchasing power is being stolen due to the influx of the supply, year on year, without fail, and gets exponentially worse.
If you don't understand that then there isn't much hope for you.

>Do you complain about milk being a ripoff because it doesn't last for years?

Nobody uses milk for it's purchasing power, now or future. It's a good that is bought and 'used'.

>What level of lunacy am I up against here?

My only worry is at what cost.

Currently we're sitting at a -25% loss from many of the new buyers in only a few days.

If these big exchanges want to "get more people to use digital currencies as a form of payment, rather than just as a speculative investment tool" then we really need to be seeing some buyer security, and a follow through with the market that they are happy buying at these prices.

The real question is does anyone want to sell that many bitcoins for that price?

We're at a pretty long time at these prices now, anybody with that many bitcoins either sold well above 300 in 2014. Sold into the rally to 300 or sold in the fall back down to here.

I can't see anyone who has bought into bitcoins in the past month who chooses to sell 'now'.

There's no downward momentum anymore, the only way I see it happening is if some big players come out the woodwork and properly start shorting again, but, they have to worry about the "there's always a bigger whale :^)" meme

Dude, the margin call is nasty as you've seen. Stop playing that game and trading when the vipers are typically on the other end of the game. Just buy and hold with your expendables and wait til the market comes back up instead of setting yourself up to get crunched. My God... Don't be afraid to take a minimal loss but manually sell when things get too underwater for you on your own. This is the double loss playing the trading game on the long or short that all relaxed players should chill on.

Now, you're gonna see the wrath of the trolls. I've seen this play out before and never would open myself up to this unfolding on my face like that. The vast majority of traders (like 66%+) will get nailed, that's why people should just take their stance and let it ride w/ a short stop loss in a mental fashion.

Yeah you're right, I'm all out of margin now. Moving to storage and taking a break for a while, good luck and happy trading everyone

I see some people are talking about bears and bulls?  What the heck does this have to do with bitcoin anyhow?  I'm a total newb by the way....

In stocks there are "bear markets" and "bull markets."

For an over simplified description:

Bears are pessimists
Bulls are optimists

Bears believe the price is going down
Bulls believe the price is going up

Why anyone who is involved with BTC enjoys being a "bear" is beyond my understanding.  Sure, bear markets are a part of the cycle but I would think logically being a long term "bull" makes more sense.

Maybe they're bitter they missed out on being early adopters.
They secretly believe BTC is going to be huge but want the price to go really low temporarily so they can build up a big stash to reap the rewards in years time.

That's my understanding of the real bears on here.

They love accumulating coins, and the best way to do that is "for as cheap as possible for as long as possible".

Someone better get buying then. There is still 17,000BTC between here ($2.9) and $3

17k BTC isn't that much. And once we clear the 3$ mark this market is going to enter a free-fall... In a world with reversed gravity that is.  Wink
In relative terms, no it's not a lot. But, I couldn't buy 17,000BTC, so to me (and most here I'm sure), that's a lot.
But, I do agree. If we get past $3, it will take flight.

No it won't.  You're all getting played right now.  The long, slow slide is going to resume sooner or later.  Bitcoin will never, ever reach $32 again, ever.  Period.  The odds of it ever reaching $5 are so low it's not even worth considering the possibility.  This is just the usual blip upward before this market resumes its march to oblivion.  I'm sorry to see so many people so easily fooled, again.

Will I be able to quote tarmi like this next year Huh

You come across with great egotism and hubris, like you have all the answers. As if no-one has ever dared deliberate your concerns.

I was promised sub 200 2 months ago. I was promised sub 220 1 month ago. I was promised sub 235 a week ago.

Conclusion : If you are not flash buying, this shitcoin simply doesn't go up (its tendency is to go into abyss). You start to think that Tim Draper, Winkle and Friends are just pumping fiat in this so they won't lose value on their hundreds of thousands of bitcoins.

On the 27th and 30th August 2013 Markus bought a lot of BTC, further faking the bull market (total net BTC bought by Markus = 297628). From the Willy report:

In this table, the first two trades (buy/sell pairs) are by some regular user with ID 238168. In the second trade, this user buys 0.398 BTC for $15.13. The next trade is some large market buy by Markus (ID 698630): note how the “$15.13″ value from the previous trade seems to “stick”; regardless of the volume of BTC bought, the value paid is always $15.13. This is speculation, but perhaps for Markus, the “Money” spent field is in fact empty, and the program that generates the trading logs simply takes whatever value was already there before. In other words, Markus is somehow buying tons of BTC without spending a dime.

Holy shit, trolls coming out full force just because we're back at the $240 range. We were here last month, and there was much less FUDing then. Oh, well, I guess a (sharp? could 8% in one day be considered sharp?) decline to $240 makes them harder (or moistens them up more) than a steady uptrend to $240.
Bears have their days, bulls have their days (funny how the beartrolls are much more vile), I'm just gonna sit on my bitcoins and see what happens.

They're not beartrolls, they're day traders.  They're buying while everyone else is panic selling.  Then they'll pump again and make their 10%.

Wash, rinse, repeat.

I am not buying this shit any time soon.

IT SHOULD BE $10,000 per each coin by now if it weren't for their fat coins!!

Well, we don't even know whether there are any truly legit exchanges. The whole thing is mired in fog and bollocks. A fair price might arrive one day when there are markets that can be trusted. Until then the whole thing is the plaything of a small number of people who do what they want.
So if a bigger player such as a big bank comes into play then i guess we can see the price sky rocket?

They probably already are.

Take your medication in time and stay of the red candies, thx.

Btw I'm seeing the flatline on wisdom too. Seems to be ticking well again now.

When is the pennant due to break? Or are we flatlining it out also? :/

Well, we seem to be poking through 1d and lower BBands to the upside atm.

Also, MACD and RSI looking pretty healthy.

1 week/3d BB look tight as a nuns cunt so how that breaks will be anybody's guess

ATH guess

26/10/2017 for me, thanks

Reason: Too much bullish momentum, if btc had fomo-wicked to $6k-8k then i really doubt a new ath this early, but it seemed to form a nice overbought top, a couple months correction, bounce off the trend ($2950) already looks good. We'll range here ($3'500-$4'200) for a few weeks, mid October China FUD blows over or all the Chinks that are going to sell already have. $5000 breaks on 26/10 because i'd say this date +/- a week

Stop-limit $3000

Good luck everyone, and nice of you to do this micgoossens Cheesy
