Good morning Bitcoinland.

After last might's excitement we seem to be consolidating between $16k and $16.5k. Didn't quite make a new ATH... currently $16470USD/$21170CAD (Bitcoinaverage).

Alts also up... old coins are worth $18143USD/$23320CAD each (Coinmarketcap).

First futures trading is in the books, a couple more exchanges to go. Things are looking good.

Go Bitcoin go.

BTCBTC heading up again i think 20K is still possible before new yeerzzz :-D weeee

Don't know where you are looking but it's again in a down move (-700 eur) since about 10 hours after recovering the dip.

Further, I don't like the look of this slow round off one bit...looks like exhaustion.

It’s not a shitty precious metal either that you can shovel out of the ground as soon as the price rises.

It looks like you have no understanding of the energy industry.  The only reason there was an enormous amount of metals being mined in the 20th century compared to all previous ones is because it was just a process of arbing excess energy that wasn't vital to keep nations running.  But now the energy industry as a whole has virtually given up funding to find new sources (maybe because they already took just about every low hanging fruit possible).  We are entering something resembling a Seneca cliff in the oil industry.

The only reason oil is plentiful right now in the US (and thus the price is low) is because enormous amounts of production increased lately that's almost entirely low grade shale/tar sand type stuff.  These alternative oil sources that are coming to market aren't even being done so at a profit.  They are losing money doing so.  How does it continue then?  There's lots of bad investment in the energy sector that has not toppled down and collapsed yet, but will because they are not making profits.  Or you can take the conspiracy route and think the US govt just prints money and gives it to them to subsidize the energy industry so it doesn't collapse (which is also possible since corporate welfare happens all the time).

Regardless, the era of having endless amounts of excess oil and energy to arb into bringing metals out of the ground is mostly over.  There will either be energy shortages from a Seneca cliff and no metals coming out of the ground, or energy prices will go to the moon, and since the price of oil makes up the vast majority of metals prices, metals go with them.  Here's a good chart to show the correlation of oil and metals.  Due to the bankers constantly naked shorting metals down to cost of production to try and suppress them and prop up the dollar, they act mostly as an energy futures contract until the global banker monopoly fix ends:

If it is true that only 0,01% of the population today uses bitcoin, and the price is almost 20000 USD, imagine the price when 50% of the population uses bitcoin. We are talking several hundred million dollars, maybe even in the range of a billion. One million will be reached within two years at this rate.

im a superbull - but thats even too much for me:

That's what some people said in here when I predicted 10000 by the end of this year and 80000 by the end of next year, and look where we are now.

It is a fucking concern. Even if you, personally, are not concerned. We are rapidly approaching a limit to how many people can even use bitcoin, regardless of fee size.

We need to get Segwitting. I'm faintly appalled that it wasn't ready to roll from minute one in the Core wallet, let alone anywhere third party.

Lukejr is on record saying we ought not to be Segwitting until LN is ready. I'm not sure why, but there it is.

looking back at the last 10 days we can clearly see the bubble popping and the first good attempt at catching the resulting knife.

you can see that when the bubble popped at ~266$ their was a big dip in price without much volume ( everyone let the knife fall  )
but now at 80-50$ rang we are seeing HUGE volume spikes when their is any kind of movement up or down.
I think if we are not already at bottom, its not too far down...

I think it may be time for some retaliation attacks against Wu and Antpool who have demonstrably become malicious miners, attacking the bitcoin network.

They are withholding blocks, spamming the network to drive up fees and being a general nuisance to the point that if they were excluded from the mining network it would do more good than harm to bitcoin. They are doing everything in their power to subvert the network, without performing the 51% attack which they may actually be capable of.

https://tradeblock.com/bitcoin/

In short, someone needs to fuck these guys over seriously. It's well past time.
I really wouldn't mind seeing that. But the next best thing seems to be the new ASIC providers that are starting up. Would be nice if there were more of them though.

JIMBOOOOO!!! To the ATM, rush!!!
(buying commission must be pretty low too)

Actually, the buy fee didn't come down at all at my closest ATM.

The price didn't really dip enough for my liking anyway. Dipping to where it was just a few short days ago isn't usually enough for me to buy.

Between the high fees and the shallow dip it wasn't worth it for me.

A couple of other machines offered better fees, but one is is a sketchy location and the other is too far outside my neighborhood. The cost of a cab would have negated any buying advantage considering the limited amount of fiat cash I have in hand at the moment.

Even if I had more cash and raced over in a cab, I might have been too late anyway. The price has already come halfway back up.

If it dips further and goes below $15k, I might be tempted to reallocate some funds to buy some more. For now however, I'll just hold.

why not buy with online exchanges? Huh

I prefer the security and anonymity of OTC and ATMs.

I learned my lesson with MtGox. Lost 50 coins. Never again.

When I acquire coins, they go straight into offline cold storage, mostly paper wallets, although I do keep a small amount (less than 5 coins) in a Trezor for convenience.

I don't ever want to expose my coins to the internet. I also resent nosiness. Anonymity is the cornerstone of freedom.

Yes, ATM fees are usually higher than exchange fees but when you consider the cost of transferring fiat currency and the total lack of anonymity of online exchanges, it's a small price to pay.

Whenever I have the chance to acquire coins for cash, anonymously, it's a bonus. I've met other Bitcoiners at meetups who I only know on a first name basis. I've also bought coins from storefront gold and coin dealers without divulging my name. They get their cash, I get my coins, no names required.

why not buy with online exchanges?

I think for bitcoin to grow and the price to grow past 20k the scalability issue need to be fixed. Fees of 700+ sat/B is unsustainable. I don't think that increasing the block size like BCH did is the solution but a hard look at scalability is needed.
Do you think that halving the block size is a solution then?

Good morning Bitcoinland and a very pleasant Boxing Day to all.

I see we've had a nice leg up past where we were before Friday's beartrap/panic... currently $15924USD/$20228CAD (Bitcoinaverage).

Old coins are up to $19238USD/$24442CAD (Coinmarketcap).

What nice little Xmas presents the weekend buying opportunity and quick recovery were.

Let's see if we can get an ATH before the new year.

Go Bitcoin go.

edit: back over $16k at Stamp

thanks....trying to guess

At the current state of the blockchain, with a standard 2 inputs 2 output tx, a non-segwit would be a little over $8.00. I would set fee at 170 sates/byte right now.

Thanks you will be tipped for your math...will send you a pm so I don't lose your avatar/handle now as a test...will shoot off tip as soon as I see if my frigging wallet works

By then Bitcoin had better have segwit running properly.

My question, how will people monetize the LN?

Segwit is running properly, its just a number of the big generators of TX's refuse to upgrade. - why?
LN has monetization built in, you can collect a small fee for relaying, it effectively allows you to put your BTC to work.

LN goes away from satoshis vision and you know it +++ Poon the LN dev is a bumbling idiot :-D lmfao

I don't understand how you come to any of your implied conclusions.  1) there is some kind direct negative correlation with cryptolocker and btc price, or 2) such supposed negative correlation would drive btc prices to zero  - and even if your underlying logic is correct, what are the odds, like .00001%   ... Why would we spend more than a fraction of a second (which surely is less time than I spent to write this inquiry post) considering some baloney .00001% odds event(s)?

It's the same concept at the basis of PoW: Working must be hard, checking must be easy. And stay easy.

So what is your point here? Do you assert that farmers in Africa are able to run a fully-validating, non-mining wallet client for BTC are fully able to, but are utterly unable to do so for BCH?
Again! Simplifying things down to 1/0, "fully able"/"utterly unable" is quite below you. It's a matter of degrees. Come on.

I am not a farmer and don't live in Africa, but running a "fully-validating, non-mining wallet client" is possible for me on the BTC chain, albeit not always comfortable bandwidth-wise. It would be nearly impossible for me to do the same on the BCH chain, if the miners would get their shit together and stick to the big blocks they loved so much, rather than jumping wildly from one size to the other.

Today, the BCH chain is less resource intensive than is the BTC chain. Of course, I expect this will change with increasing use of BCH in commerce. Nevertheless, it has been shown that today's typical home computer on a typical home broadband connection can handle about 100 tx/s before bogging down - several times more than that with fixes to the broken multithreading model in today's core-derived clients. And 100 tx/s is well below the current 8MB BCH blocksize.

Quote
Let's keep this discussion as it is for now and give it a few months, will we? LN is coming.

Which, I expect, will do very little to solve the congestion problem. But OK.

Quote
(Hint: a "fully-validating, non-mining wallet client" is what the rest of the world calls a full node.)

Hint: when Satoshi said 'node', he was referring to a mining fully-validating client. Except for when he qualified it explicitly as non-mining. IOW, the coarsening of the language -- by people who should really know better -- has resulted in increased ambiguity.

Yep. Bitconnect is dead I guess. Everyone who saw videos on Youtube of their conference knew it was a scam. This guy has become a meme now.
The early people certainly made a lot of money there and the general populace got burned. That's why we should sometimes listen to our fellow crypto lovers when they have our best interest at heart.
Bitcoin is the one and only original. If its price goes somewhere sub 3k it's probably game over. But it won't happen until all the knockoffs die first.

Good morning Bitcoinland and greetings from the jungle in the Yucatan peninsula. Internet access is spotty out here so I haven't been checking in daily.

I see the "S. Korea bans Bitcoin" panic is continuing, all the way down to 4 digits and back up a little... currently $10160USD/$12645CAD (Bitcoinaverage).

I'm too lazy to work out the old coin price (damn, the Mexican lifestyle is getting to me) but all alts are down, mostly a lot worse than Bitcoin.

If I was at home I would have jumped on this dip and bought by now. Oh well, at least I bought the CAD in my pocket when the price was almost $21kCAD/BTC.

Hopefully everyone else is stocking up at these bargain basement prices. If prices are still down when I get back to civilization, I'll use what I have left of my travel float to buy more coins.

Hopefully this price foolishness will turn out the same way last January's "China bans Bitcoin" nonsense turned out last year.

Bitcoin is still strong. It's not just about blockchain technology, it's more about open source and decentralization.
_____

Damn. By the time my sketchy internet service got my message posted, we'd gone back down to 4 digits. Oh well, at least the scenery is gorgeous and the Mayans are super friendly.

The problem is that the crypto kiddies don't really have any skin in the game to see things play out long term. If they put in $300 or even $1000 and they end up with 50% profit (say $1500), they cash out and go blow it on something stupid. Presumably because their mind tells them "Well I'll never get wealthy on $1500 anyway, might as well just spend it then." Meanwhile they continue to run up their credit cards and work hand-to-mouth, essentially forever.

This is the mindset of the forever poor. They can't conceive of how to turn that $1500 into $5k, then $20k, then $100k, and so on until they have some real wealth. This is why there aren't more millionaires running around in every country of the world. No long term vision, no patience, and no discipline. It can take a decade or two to build real wealth, which so many don't have the vision or patience for.

ya these millennials even if you gave them wealth ~ do they know what to do with it? Investing in the real world is a loooong and boring game that takes immense patience...this fast food society :\ meh

I bought btc back but I see it will dip for sure - but at my exchanges there is so low volume and bot manipulation that even If i sell and buy back at night when it will be low - still I wont be +

And no one here have shown me any good reason/evidence that Hodling = winning

If you holdl from january 2013, you make about a 1000x in 5 years.

This is a good reason/evidence.

So you want to say that Bitcoin will never drop? Please in whole history of stock - find me company or anything that never ever dropped? Please

Sorry but I am not rich - no one gave me anything. Right now I will try on 0.175btc and HODL not looking on the price. If it goes up for uptrend I buy more. If it goes down - oh well that wasn't so much.

If i put my savings into a bankaccount im 100% sure it will be worth less next year.

Investing my savings into BTCitcoin brought me way more then i could have ever hoped for. I dont trust banks with their government issued money with my savings. I believe in decentralised limited supply. Thats why i invest in bitcoin.

I pay with fiat, save in BTCitcoin. HODL 4 life.

IMO certain altcoins have a place in this world unless and until bitcoin can fit every use case required. It's getting pretty close to being able to do with the inclusion of LN, rootstock and other 2nd layers/sidechains.

When bitcoin can fill every role nearly as well as any altcoin, the only argument left for having an altcoin would be that Bitcoin is too decentralized, and you need a totalitarian, centralized governance (Etherium, Bcash, Federal Reserve Coin).

I foresee Monero thriving in any case.

From this levels, only sell btc

You giving advices, newbie?

If you think about it, BTC already had a bit more than a 50% price correction, and currently bouncing around the 35% to 45% territory.

Seems like a good range to buy, rather than sell, but depends how many BTC you already have.
I don't have any yet, but I will buy at a price 6700$. Good luck

If you speak the truth, then it seems that you do not have too much positive view about bitcoin, so even if you do end up being able to buy BTC at $6700, it does not seem too likely that you will hold your BTC for very long.  You do not seem to have much confidence in bitcoin, so good luck to yourself with those kinds of BTC bear views, unless you develop a come to Jesus moment.   Cheesy

I will continue with my buying on the way down system, and if BTC prices go down to $6,700 I will end up buying around $7k, and if they go to $6k, then I will buy there.  My orders are already set down to $3k, yet I do not believe my orders at $8k or lower are likely to fill - even though previously, I had asserted that if we break below $10k (a couple weeks ago), then $8k becomes reasonable, and I suppose if we end up breaking below $8k, then $5k to $6k would become reasonable at that point.

Currently, I see nothing wrong with preparing for BTC prices down to $5k or even below that, but it does seem unreasonable to prepare only in that one direction and even not to hold any BTC, currently.

For those playing along at home, you'll no doubt note that (should my understanding be correct), BW consumption scales at O(n^2).
I'm sure it will improve when the routing invention breakthrough occurs.
Of course - the clueless developers! D'oh, what an unforgivable oversight! The system they implemented is doomed. They chose the SAN (Spam All Network) algorithm for both route discovery and node state update. They slept during their networking lessons, or was it calculus? So they failed to notice that bandwidth grows quadratically with the number of nodes. This way, it's almost as bad as if one increased the block size. But who would ever think of that?
Hyperbole duly noted. Be that as it may, do you have any evidence that suggests that my understanding is incorrect?

Honestly, I don't know which solution has eventually been adopted in this first version of the LN, but already in 2016 the proposed method was significantly better than the naive SAN technique you hint at.

https://steemit.com/bitcoin/@emabfuri/bitfury-bitcoin-routing-lightning-network-solution

Here's a relevant excerpt.
Quote
Using a fog of war like design, the collected information by the routing algorithm “includes channels within a low hop-distance and paths to randomly selected nodes further away… As a result, a node will have a well-illuminated map of its local neighborhood within the network, with random patches of visibility further away enabled by the selection of beacon nodes.”

So, it's not an initially low TTL that gets conservatively increased as I had wildly imagined, but not so far off either: closer nodes are exhaustively enumerated, while a small set of distant nodes is selected pseudorandomly.

There is a more detailed pdf paper floating around. If you study it, a summary will be well received. I don't have the time or energy right now. If I get either or both, I'd rather actually test how LN works for me, with my own node.

http://bitfury.com/content/5-white-papers-research/whitepaper_flare_an_approach_to_routing_in_lightning_network_7_7_2016.pdf

If Bitcoin closes above 11147 in 2.75 hours from now, that would be bullish and Boblawblaw should then be able to stick to his retirement plans and sell @ 12500 very soon.

why 11147?

Is bitcoin dead if it doesn't close above 11147?

No but the market sentiment would not be indicating bullish going forward.

Even the Weiss rating bullshit from today kind of demonstrates that either smart people do not understand bitcoin or they are purposefully engaging in misleading behavior...

How the fuck do they give Ethereum a B and bitcoin a C+ and Dogecoin a C...   Makes little sense, except that they are making shit up, and in the end, the fact that some of us can see through the bullshit, we are going to continue to invest in bitcoin and we will profit from such ongoing better than others insight.  In other words, some folks are going to get mislead by the bullshit that ended up coming out of the supposedly objective and professional Weiss rating system.
Calling this little piss ant ratings corporation smart people is beneath you JJG. Market makers and big money sent way more qualified(and discrete) individuals out to check out bitcoin long ago. Any claim by these people is suspect imo. I mean for crying out loud these are the same pond scum that caused the recession. While not exact its of the same tainted lineage.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Credit_rating_agencies_and_the_subprime_crisis

The fact of the matter that bitcoin is getting a grade at all..let alone a C+ is absolutely amazing as far as I am concerned. I mean..think about it..this is the coin associated with mtGox..SR...numerous hacks ect ect.

What are you talking about? Cardano has the most active cryptocurrency repo on Github. More than Monero, more than Bitcoin, more than ETH. I have no way of proving it but I guarantee Cardano paid for that rating. It sticks out like dog balls.

Edit - from the SEC ruling against Weiss:

Quote
Weiss Research maintained internal performance records which noted every trade Weiss Research recommended and the hypothetical profit or loss an investor would have experienced if he or she had followed Weiss Research’s recommendations. Weiss Research did not make these performance records available to subscribers or potential subscribers. These performance records demonstrate that, during the relevant time period, subscribers to most of Weiss Research’s premium services, who followed Weiss Research’s recommendations without deviation, would have lost money. Subscribers to the few profitable services would have realized overall gains that were well below the profits from individual trades represented in Weiss Research’s advertisements.

What worries me about tether the most is not that it may not be fully covered by real dollars, but that it might be dangerously close to what central banks are doing. ANd we all know, that banks are not too happy when someone else is taking their money printing/fractional reserve monopoly away from them. Especially when they cannot control it.

My conspiracy tinfoil hat tells me that Tether was sort of endorsed by the CB establishment. They need Bitcoin and the whole crypto market to have a weakness, an Achilles heel, when the next financial crisis comes. Otherwise they know that Bitcoin will go to the moon and they won't have a way to crash and short it.

Tether could be like their Trojan Horse.  Cheesy

Doesn't seem to tie up with the number of new signups on various exchanges.
If it was just a relative few deep pocketed investors then surely there wouldn't have been such a demand for new registrations?

Well if demand was really so high from the retail side, then shouldn't we be seeing the price skyrocket right now? Or at least continue to rise? Hell, 20M+ retail accounts worldwide just trying to buy $50-100 each in this one month would send the price to the moon right now.

But we aren't even seeing that level of buying pressure. That's why I think it mostly came from the institutional side.

I'm sure we'll continue to see 500K - 1M sign ups a month this year, but not sure that will immediately translate to more buying. It really makes me wonder how much bitcoin is being bought by all these new accounts.

Most exchanges still have a giant backlog of newly registered users waiting to get verified. Some of them had to upgrade their servers to handle the numbers of users that were already verified, but they still haven't dealt with the unverified backlog. There are still people who have been waiting for months for verification.

After they all get verified the price might skyrocket again.

pls hurry up and "verify" our crack team of homeless people(sockpuppets) that are signing up to bittrex  Wink ~*good luck with that!*

Fill your bags boys. This is the moment we all have been waiting for. It is coming. Paper monetary system is on life support since early 2000's. QE's kept him alive for nearly another 20 years and It has come to an end.

And we just got some confirmation yesterday that the market does in fact see us as a safe haven asset. (A lot of people just assume this, I have never felt comfortable just assuming it)
Yep a 500$ increase means that the bulls are in for the fight with the bears and they are showing that they don't want Bitcoin to go down below 7,000$. It will just need one big pump for it to go up again. Right now it is trying to complete a inverse head and shoulder pattern which is a bullish formation if it goes about 7,600$ our first target would be 7,700$- 7,800$ but if it goes down to 7,350$ then this rally would be over.

$7348 now.

So I take it the rally is over. It dropped so quickly, down nearly $200 USD in five minutes. Gotta love BTCs volatility. Pretty sure we are headed for sub $7k possibly sub $6k. I hope I am wrong.

I remember those days. Something I have wondered and I've been meaning to ask, what happened to that wall observer bot? The one that would post the depth chart every few hours? It appears to be gone completely.

RichieT did a rage quit with his Chartbuddy about 2 years ago.  He got all BIG blocker nutjobie, and at that time concluded (and still seems to hold such sentiments) that theymos was censoring his feelings too much, and he was going to take his marbles...

You or anyone else with the possible skills who wants to could program a chartbuddy, and I am sure that anyone would receive a lot of positive praise for such proactivity.. likely merits, but maybe if the bot performed well, even a few folks would donate some token amounts of BTC (no guarantees, of course)?

yea, i miss the old chart buddy,...

Chartbuddy did not talk back to nobody.. merely provided a stream of continuous edumacation, and could fill the thread for hours and hours, just in case live peeps were not interested in posting.

Where is the ROI?
