I'm just wondering what the ddosers might be attempting to accomplish.
One possibility is they're wanting to sell OTC and have an agreement that the price be the highest 24hr volume usd exchange price so they might be trying to prevent trading on stamp till gox catches up? But I may just as easily be making shit up!
the exchanges have been artifically puffing the price of BTC imho!

Agreed. The difference between now and the April bubble burst is that the public have now heard about bitcoin, with plenty of articles in the mainstream media about the price, ATMs, Silk Road, ebay, etc etc. There's way too much interest now for the price to fall back to $100, I reckon. Hopefully.

What surprises me is how the price has got here despite some bad things happening this month in the bitcoin world:

I was kidding, it was a nod to proudhon.
I'm of the opinion that next bear market will be the most devastating and the longest one so far (worse than 2011) because everyone is caught up in the belief that if only they hold long enough, they cannot possibly lose out on BTC, no matter their entry price. Every dip is a buying opportunity etc.
Furthermore, the current bubble developed very quickly after only 7 months between former alltime high. So, it's a bubble on top of a bubble in the same year.
We can talk about that once we actually top out. So far, we haven't even doubled from the 266 high.
I'm of the opinion that the time elapsed between each bubble will be shorter and shorter, each will be more 'violent' and price will go up/down more drastically until we reach the 'climax' or real price discovery. Then after that more bubbles will come, but the price will increase less and less each time, and time will be longer.
We are far away for the 'climax', i think at least two more bubbles are needed.

What the trading floor needs is many high volume traders that can be market movers. In other words buy up coin as its being dumped and sell coin as its being purchased just to stabilize the price.
When big money enters the trade floor expect things to simmer down plenty.
Question is when. Perhaps +$1000 ? Who knows.

The amount of coins on sale on the exchange is shrinking fast. Only 6k on sale on BTCChina, 7k on Bitstamp, 11k on Gox.
This is the "all time low" in terms of BTC on sale. Just think about how Avalon holds 65k coins in one address.
In my opinion is not a very good sign, it would be better for the trend to be fueled by new money in instead of scarcity of supply - just because the scarcity can be easily reversed by only one big holder.
I guess this is the nature of "penny stock market", and BTC behaves completely as a penny stock market.

Thing is, more coins than ever are locked up for the time being and can't make it to the exchanges in the foreseeable future.
The FBI has 174.000 BTC and probably won't be able to sell them until after the case against Ulbricht
Bitcoin Investment Trust has 60.000+ BTC locked up that they are obliged to hold on to for their customers for probably at least a year (the number is based on the fact that they had 15.000.000 USD invested when the exchange rate was ~250 USD/BTC). This number will probably rise quite a bit in the coming months as they will buy more bitcoins to supply to new customers.
Possibly, the success of BIT will make other high profile individuals/companies imitate them and start buying up coins to start competing businesses. This would lead to additionally 10ks of coins being looked up for the time being. This is just speculation though, but a fairly reasonable assumption as far as I'm concerned.
You also have the Winklevii twins claiming they had 1%+ of all bitcoins in the beginning of the year waiting for their ETF. That's at least 110.000 BTC.
We also have Chamath Palihapitiya, ex Facebook-executive, who claimed to have 5.000.000 USD invested in BTC at the end of october. At the exchange rate back then, that would be 25.000+ BTC. He also said he was still looking to acquire more.
And there is a very high likelihood we have unknown high profile investors who have made private bets but hasn't said so officially. This is hard to quantify, but I belive this is at least a multiple of 10ks of bitcoins being locked up for the time being in anonymous rich investors' wallets.
If you add it all up, far more coins are being "on hold" right now, than ever before.
40000 here that will not be for sale any time soon. Might move more from my active trading wallet.

On the weekly chart we are just now starting to see the kind of growth that characterized mid to late March. (33% now vs 35%-46% then)
If things play out the same way now that they did then, we've got about 3 weeks left before some major exchange melts down and causes a panic.
In March, we went +55% in 4 days from 47$ to 73$ :

I have to say that's the top I have in my mind. My initial plan is to realize some profits at $700, and some more at $970. I mean... x30 profit on average is good enough to cash in some fiat for me. But I will keep most of my BTC stash for the long run

You bring up a great point. I really wonder about selling some at 700 ish (to make up for my initial investment, or maybe 1/2 of it). Then just watch the next 5 years unfold.

There are for sure smart investors here. But the basis of what
BTC is, is about what Satoshi said. The banking system is corrupt. They profit from: war (killing), from the drug trade (Wachovia and HSBC laundered pretty close to a TRILLION I believe), from the drug war, imprisoning people with debt, etc.
Many BTC'ers represent what BTC itself represents, naturally. Good news for planet Earth.
BTC stands for something and those of you out there who have lots, I really hope you help to change the place. We have that power, just need a bit more time.

The total ask orders is still around 10000B on Mt.Gox, but it increases from 2000 to 5500 on BTCChina. I'm not sure what it means, but could be a sign that BTCChina is going to slow down.
In theory, the coins to trade *should* be less day by day. Big players should have got their $ by now and smaller players are now holding their part of
BTC. From what I understand; the idea is for the coins to spread...

BitStamp worked well during this flash crash. It's just not acceptable exchange to bug during these movements.
Well Gox had up to 20 minutes of lag during this crash, or at least that said the API. I think it is not acceptable after the mess we had back in April.. They've had A LOT of time to fix their systems...

I don't understand the psychology of some people...they panic sell even when there is not even 1 single bad new in press. I understanded the panic sell after ddos attacks or end of silk road, here it is just speculation in its pureness, right?..Bitcoin must change these pure speculators to long time believers in cryptocurrency and they have to learn actually use the bitcoin as a currency, not just as get rich quick scheme. Until than....we are not even close to going mainstream.

You don't think some people sold in panic?...i don't think it was only people cashing out to take profits...i think many people are still in some level expecting big crashes and are scared by every 1% movement...especially now when we were reaching new ath almost every day, sooner or later we will come to a point (in some way, i believe it happened today, just in small version) where people will be more and more nervous as the price of btc (their profit) will become too siginificant to lose this kind of profit...and if you add some #1 exchange was down, many people must think the april is here again. Or do you have different opinion on the 20% drop?
No this is someone capitulating about 100K coins.
More like someone tricking a whole bunch of sheeple to dump 100K coins. The history of bitcoin has been thus that regardless of the ATH we always return to it. So someone's getting cheap coins right now.

I think I was one of the last ones to successfully withdraw from gox, thankfully pulled out all I needed to buy my house before the withdraw problems started.

If you know could know exactly when bitstamp would come back online to bitfinex then it would make for a great shorting opportunity.
I would do arbitraging instead of shorting, but hardly worth it due to trading fees. Percentagewise the price difference is still small.
I have seen up to a 10% difference when it happens.
Making 10% on an arbitrage can get dwarfed by the loss in the opportunity cost of moving the fiat around rather than having had it in bitcoin.

Soon enough, Wall Street will get involved and play fractional reserve games with Bitcoin trading.

bitstamp: why are they way lower? Sure they pay, but so does bitfinex. Is it because bitfinex is kinda new as an exchange (new design recently, so a big startover, ending beta-phase).

So why is not bitstamp leading the price? They have around the same volume in trades as Mtgox has.
I'm guessing Stamp hasn't processed the wiretransfers from before the weekend yet and people have run out of USD to buy there. I know that Bitfinex doesnt have funds on Stamp anymore (BFX users can also trade on Stamp, but can only buy on Stamp when BFX has USD there, which they don't at the moment).

How do you know ? the crash has not started yet....
It is borderline possible that the "big crash" just started, but even if this is the case,
BTC is not going below $250 and it takes no more than 4 months to surpass the old highs.
I just don't see the reason for big players to move just yet. Even I haven't moved or sold a single bitcoin during 200->600, because it is just too difficult to buy back in quantity. At 1500 it will be different, because there is money to be made after it crashes to 500.
By playing only big moves and playing them right, you gain much more than by worrying every 25% change in price.
When Gox was down in 11th April, I personally walked around the town buying goxbux and bought at $62-$90 next day. I think I made hundreds of
BTC profit that week. I haven't made any profit since. This is not to underline how good I am. Just that you (collectively) would spend more time thinking and only execute the plan when you have one + the circumstances are right.
All those bitcoins came from the pockets of those whom I try to educate

heh power consumption being really really optimistic and selling at 600 bucks BTC at
www.mtgox.com minus the $7,131.80 USD I spent w/shipping (and not counting power supply)for the KNC Jupiter i have....I'm under those more then rosy conditions at 21 coins @$12,600 USD....minus $7131.80 that is $5,468.20 ahead and I'll have been mining 1 month tomorrow 11/18 as of 8:30pm CST USA.....as for electric it is a bit less then 100 bucks I think around 80 bucks but call it 100 cause I've been home a lot babysitting miner and giggling so more use on other computers and such this month

Bitcoinica, Mybitcoin, inputs.io... Trusting people with your funds in this game has gotten many people burned. There isn't, and can't yet be, a single operator out there who could truly be trusted. No exchange has even been running long enough.
Personally, I have a lot of faith in Bitstamp, for example, but I don't trust them implicitly. Spectacularly trustworthy people have stolen or simply lost other people's money time and time again, and I'm sure we'll see big losses in the future as well.

My intention is to warn you guys to practice proper risk management because inevitably, even with a small investment, your Bitcoin allocation will be the main source of your wealth. Marginal utility of wealth dictates that it's more important to secure your first million than to make another.
I've seen it go down from 32 to 2 and it was a really bullish environment too until about 14. It was a long drawn out process with countless bull traps over the course of 6 months. Don't fool yourself thinking it can't happen again today. That's just the nature of humans.
Oh I remember those days, I found it painful as hell but at $2 I loaded up with more BTC than I ever imagined I'd have.

It is so easy to sell in China. I started the selling program yesterday when I realized that the price had overshot:
- Open the account in
BTC China- After a few hours you get confirmation email
- You can fund your account instantly (no limit in funding)
- Selling works well and liquidity is good - today I have already bought 6.2M CNY
I managed to lose a trading password, needed for initiating transactions. They reseted it on the phone, doing overtime. The clerk spoke very good English. The KYC procedure is also reasonable. No trading fees. Why should I ever trade in the western snailexchange??
Oh yes. How to get back the profits? There is currently a healthy 24% arbitrage between Stamp and BTC China. If you sell now in China, you get $680 equivalent of CNY. When the premium evaporates (during the last 6 months, about half of the time premium has been about 0% and most of the time <10%), you buy back, transfer to Bitstamp, sell and pocket the money.
I don't see how China premium could not revert to <10% in the next 2 days.

A bull is a person who does not hold fiat.
A bear is a person who holds at least some fiat and wants to return to BTC.
As you can see, I am now a bear. But almost everybody else are bulls. What this means is that you do not have the means to influence price to the upside. Only we do. But we are very few. Also the newbies do. But will they really buy in this kind of situation?
Everyone else are bulls? The bears are all over this forum today predicting their doom and gloom, even Blitz turned bear and is preaching 2011 all over again.

Bitcoin doesn't need to be a currency to be successful. It will in fact be wildly successful even if only functioning as a store of value, the tax havens amounts to trillions. The first phase is speculation and this is where we are now... people believe in bitcoins future potential and that is what drives the price up and the large market cap will make it viable for large fortunes to be stored in bitcoin, eventually it will stabilize at much higher prices. At that point it will work well as a way to settle debt even if we're not able to do as many transactions as other networks I don't think it matters. Micro-transactions can happen off-chain, big money stored safely away from government and bankers.
How can big money be stored away safely if bitcoin is still tied to fiat currency? If fiat currency collapses, bitcoin no longer has anything to compare itself to, so how would we express value then? Using valuation in bitcoin itself? How would that work since there's a limited amount...

I have orders at Stamp for the rest of my fiat down to upper 400s - but I don't want to be left in fiat when new cash comes in.... The bears have another 96 hours or so, MAX. I want to be all in BTC when the noob cavalry with the investor artillery comes riding over the hill.

Just joking. Huge resistance at $650 on Stamp,
BTC1,500 mini-wall (not so mini these days at the current exchange rate) not getting chewed.
For those who took profits in the $670-$700 range (Stamp) these were great moments. I personally managed to sell 10% of my stash at $675, re-bought at $420 and just sold again a few hours ago around $630. Let me add that it was mostly sheer luck, my intention was to just take profits and not to daytrade, but you cannot say no to such an opportunity
