So we have signs indicating a possible fall in price, but nothing from graphs or from news that might cause a rise.

Seems like a sellish moment for me, or have nightmares about falllllling's predictions coming true all along your sleep.

It's sad and annoying to see that this big drop wasn't enough for some people. They try to push us further down.
If it's up to these idiots they'd take us down to 10 dollars. They don't care if they destroy the whole Bitcoin economy in the process.

There is no reason to sell anymore at the moment. Those who wanted to sell did so already. The pressure is gone.
This is pure manipulation and idiot sheep following, afraid of another crash.

Bitcoin won't die because of some falls, otherwise it would be dead already.

We came from the 400's not long time ago, if can't remember

Che was a Marxist revolutionary.  Please don't associate Bitcoin with Marxism.  We are anti-Statism.

Probably lots of reasons not to associate Bitcoin with Che Guevara, but anti-statism isn't a good one. Marxism's eventual goal is Communism, which its proponents see as a classless, stateless society.

They said that the society will be stateless because nothing will exist outside the state, so we can't speak about the state as a separate entity.

I guess it is not what most bitcoiners want.

It's starting to feel like we're gonna keep testing this level until it falls. Hate to say it. I wonder if this will be like "the last time we see 500s again" -- except in reverse? I guess we'll see who among the hodlers can really hodl. Smiley

Weekend is dump time.

I'm really surprised we still in the up-500 area. Was expecting dump to 490's or lower, so I guess the 500's are not weak.

Are you kidding me? You guys (most of you) think for real that price will go <$500 next week?

Where are bulls? What is happening to you?

I am very sure that price will stay >$500 for now.

We will see ...

Go below 500 for some time and lose the 500's and stabilish below the 500's are different things.

I think we'll see some below-500 quick dips next week, specially on weekend, so I was obligated to vote yes, even though I don't believe we will lose the 500's.

Not sure if OP meant that

I'd love to talk to 1 or 2 of these people and ask them what their motivation is for keeping the price down.  These damn sell walls all the time.

Over the years there have been many indicators that were used to predict a weekend dip.

Most of those would have predicted this weekend to be a dip, but it was not.

I guess the fall of the 3.2k wall make some people optimistic, and that's why we see no dump this weekend.

How can we compare volumes between exchanges with and without charges?  They are just not comparable.

However, the volumes by the exchange its self are comparable.  If we compare current volume of BTC-China with its past volume, we see it has resumed to volume of last bubble. The same happens on Huobi, Okcoin and Bitfinex.

Why volumes increase to or close to those of last bubble, in a downtrend market? Does that mean we are close to bottom? Anyone to comment?

Means someone is selling a lot, instead of buying a lot.

So we are in a down bubble, not an up bubble

People seem to have forgotten how badly bitcoin tanked last time there was an auction. It was only shortly after the auction completed that the bitcoin price went up a bit.

Last time, the price had a sudden drop right after the auction was announced (June 12) then recovered when it was known that a single bidder won all the lots (June 30).

This time there was no drop when the auction was announced. Has the outcome been posted yet?

The drop was before the auction, when the coins suddenly moved and no one knew what was happening. When the auction was announced prices recovered

It's because the triangle cult has blind faith in their trendlines. Of course if the lines fail, they will have a crisis of faith, which leads to dumping.

It's how markets work.
So current price is determined by the price of 2 to 3 years ago?

Since some people from 2 or 3 years ago are still around, I think it have some influence.

Also the TA people use the same technique, so it in certain sense influence them too, even if they are not here since 2 or 3 years ago

Well if you know when to short BTC you can always make good money when it goes down.

LTC was very easy to make money this year by shorting it.

To short be successful you need it going up sometimes.

LTC is falling like a stone day after day with no sign of bottom. It is still risky because you still can lose lots of money, since there is little LTC acceptance and nothing that determines the right price of BTC

So many high profile attacks these past few weeks involving Sony, and outages with Xbox Live, etc.

People hear bitcoin and "digital" currency. Having a website go down for a few hours is one thing... but nobody is going to be crazy enough to entrust the protocol to their savings. And the fact that value has been dropping all year doesn't help.

It's really incredible that we're still over $300 at this point. It's not going to last for long.

Why a guy called risssing acts like fallling?

And the fact that we had so many attacks but the protocol remains untouched(no transactions being reverted, private keys bruteforced easily, etc) should counts in favor of Bitcoin

"Gemini has also picked up the backing of a New York-based bank, though the twins aren't getting more specific than that. "This means that your money will never leave the country," said Winklevoss. And US currency on Gemini will qualify for FDIC insurance, a measure that should have investors confident that funds will be "as safe and secure as they are in your bank account today."

Why is only theverge publishing it?

Nothing on coindesk crypto news etc, and nothing about it in any reputable media.

If this trendline is broken to the downside, then I'll worry.

Btw, "In order to dump coins one must have coins" this is true, except in the case of any exchange that operates an off-chain overbook. Which is pretty much all of them at this point.

Please maintain control of your own keys people... that's pretty much the whole point of this whole thing!

at what price(more or less) can we consider the trendline broken downwards?

Sure it is.

Who would risk his coins to keep them over there? We don't need another Gox.

why? did you lose any on stamp?

bitstamp is the best and only legit fiat gateway. if bitpay is ok with using it I am ok too. you can trade on bitfinex or okcoin as much as you want, but you know where your fiat profits will end.

every BTC owner lost because of the panic dump caused by the hacking and by the hurt it caused to BTC.

the vulnerability was known and it could be easily avoided.

The guy may well be a scammer, of course.  One interesting detail is that he claims to have "usernames and
hashed passwords of 476,122 users, 51,490 deposit addresses, 7,756 plaintext passwords, 13,280 product listings, 52,481 private messages, 145,493 transaction records".  If true, those numbers may help estimate the number of bitcoin users.

How would he have more than 3 times as many users as transactions?  Is it plausible that 2 out of every 3 people who registered at the site did not order anything from it?

How on earth would it do that?

because the sole purpose of people getting BTC is buy drugs on silk road. And of course no one would visit the site and don't buy drugs.

Isn't it clear?

The nice thing about bitcoin is it's slow steady growth with it's violent upswings and resultant bear slides whenever the market gets a little cray cray. This provides opportunities abound for anyone with the vision to see and a stomach for risk. The next wildly kooky market action is coming, but probably not soon. Patience is a virtue.

There are about 4M$ new longs since the start of this rally (~240$ some 10 days ago), this means about 15k BTC will have to be sold if the rally ends, just to cover those longs.

And 50000 coins from the auction which will only settle on monday. I guess they were bought at a discount to the current price. Lets see how long this will be a discount

so the short term outcome most likely is a dump?

Anyway I doubt BTC will visit the lower levels from the start of the year.

tbh... I don't know, but I would not be surprised of it. I am repeating myself, but there is another auction and the Gox liquidation which currently appear to happen this year.

The Gox thing is not exactly an auction. It will be Gox giving back some of the customer's BTC/money.

Considering that there is still no hint about how the owned amount will be calculated, I think anything that we are taking very late in this year

you are right this is not an auction. But it will surely create supply. I know what I am going to do with the coins distributed to me... no matter how high the payout will be.

Thats if there's any left at all. I'd hate to thing how much money has been spent on legal fees et al.

I doubt very much will be left after legal fees and employer payments.

I just waited 3 days to be told this.  My Bank in the UK told me before Bitstamp did that raiffeisen bank are rejecting payments. So lord knows how long i will have to wait before i see my money again.
Simply AVOID Bitstamp. Not worth the hassle.
In the UK i am buying all my bitcoins from Bitbargain.
Some people are really ignorant and impatient if you ask me. I am going to disregard the possibilities of it being true or false. The problem is not Bitstamp, it is the Raiffeisen Bank. You can't blame Bitstamp for this.

I've always used Bitstamp and have never had a single problem with them.  Please tell me which exchange would reimburse the customers after a hack of 19k BTC?

Back to the price now. I wonder if we could stick to $240 as the bottom now. There is no reason to go back to $220.

Tell me what other exchanges except Gox got hacked by 19k+ BTC?

(Concrete proof please, not only rumors)

Some bears try too hard to decrease price. Even fork happens price won't effect dramatically on both sides.

Rumors about the fork, you mean.

I doubt that anything concrete would have no effect on prices

Gemini's low trading volume could also be due to the lag in wire transfers. Give it a week and we will find out.

they need to verify people's ID too before they can trade, I think it will have more impact than the lag of wire transfer

$4.51 up already today on Bitstamp. This is certainly more interesting than yesterday or the day before that. I wonder if the price will be able to hold above $260 or at least $250. It would be nice to move away from $230 (even though there's nothing wrong staying with that either). This is the highest price since mid August.

I am so conditioned to expect huge dumps after a small rise..
Why?

Because of two years of bearish market, of course.

But this time might be different because this might be start of the halving dump that will end the bear market for a while

Bitstamp has insiginificant volume comparated with the big players that are driving the price up. They won't make difference.

And since forever BTC-e has been below everyone else, I think $8 gap still noth worth to arbitrage in a bullish scenatio

Bitstamp can't be out of coins because they don't sell their own coins to people, like Coinbase or Circle.

Worse may happens is people put sell orders at high prices only, but I don't see it happening right now, even with the price increasing hour after hour the spread is not that absurd

Maybe.
