But I just watched the first segment of the first panel today, and sorry for the serious but I'd like if some of you could offer an opinion on the following.
Cyrus R. Vance, the very first person to speak, chooses to start with a case of money laundering, of course. Money laundering is the catch phrase and it's designed to put a negative image on bitcoin. They will repeat it again and again when asked about bitcoin.
The interesting thing is that they were laundering fiat dollars acquired from the theft of credit card information, using western express. This crime can't even happen with bitcoin. There is no credit card information to steal in the first place.
I think the reason they are going to try to vilify bitcoin and try to regulate the shit out of it so that they can maintain their monopoly on the money laundering business.

As others have observed, that was not real trade. It was some robot, probably buggy, frantically selling to itself. It was turned off after 3 hours and ~40,000 BTC traded.
BTC-China should expunge that fake volume from its records. If not, chart makers should do it. In reality BTC-China is still quite dead.
Their bank must be closed for the New year holidays, so BTC-China should not have received any new money yet.
By the way, that market ranking site does not even list Huobi, which has the largest volume of them all (twice as much as OKCoin).
My paranoia sees an ongoing conspiracy to deny the very existence of Huobi and push customers towards BTC-China (and Mt.GOX). She is wrong of course.

It's really simple once you "get it" but it took me a while to wrap my head around it too. I'll try:
If you send me 1 BTC and I spend it tomorrow, when I spend it, I will have destroyed 1 bitcoin-days.
If I wait till next month to spend it, when I spend it it will destroy 30 bitcoin-days.
But I you send my 60 BTC and I spend them 12 hours from now, it would also destroy 30 bitcoin-days.
So, it's a combined measure of the magnitude and oldness of the coins that are being spent. If we see a huge spike in the amount of bitcoin-days destroyed, it's a good indication that someone just moved a lot of old coins.
Interestingly: something akin to bitcoin-days is used by the bitcoin-network to determine the priority of a transaction. AFAIK:
priority = (# of BTC) * (age) / (size of TX in bytes)
This sounds like POS to me... Does this mean that the Bitcoin code could be changed to implement POS easily (if the miners agreed)

Not a chance. It removes the option of "cross trades".
e.g You are a broker who has order to buy 200 and sell 100.
The broker would then buy 100 and then "cross" 100, resulting in 200 bought and 100 sold.
This is critical in open outcry exchanges.
Why not cancel the sell 100 order, buy 100, and avoid paying fees on 100?

It seems more useful to think that there is just one stock market, where the stocks of all companies are traded together. That's because traders can quickly sell one stock and buy another as they see fit. New investment money that comes into one stock promptly "diffuses" to other stocks. Thanks to arbitrage traders, one can even think of all stock exchanges of the world as a single market.
Methinks that the same is happening in the world of crypto-currency, with regard to both the exchanges proper and the support network.
The most reputable (or least disreputable?) crypto exchanges seem to be well connected by arbitrage, so that prices tend to rise and fall together. Several already trade two or more crypto-coins, against each other and against national currencies. Many traders already own and play with several types of crypto-coins at the same time. So perhaps we should start thinking of "the crypto-coin market" instead of "the Bitcoin market", "the Litecoin market", etc.
As for the support network, it seems that many miners will direct their efforts to whatever crypto gives the best return at the moment. So, even though the blockchains are independent, we should perhaps think of just one Crypto-Coin Network, that supports all cryptos according to usual cost/profit principles.

That big dump in stamp gave me two thoughts:
1) An old miner/investor saw that the price isn't going anywhere, but he was in profit anyway so he just dumped, without caring much about the loss of an sudden dump.
2) The current stability is is an illusion created to keep the price high so "the right people" can get their money out with better profits. When small buy walls come up to 800, then they will get eaten. Maybe there just was enough buys near 800 and it seemed profitable for one dump and then nudge the price back to 800, then wait and repeat the process. It currently seems that because of low volume, it's not very hard to keep the price where you want it.

It would seem that the "panic sheep" haven't been selling. Here's how I remember today:
- BitcoinTalk went down (DDoS?)
- Huge dump on BitStamp (1000+ BTC)
- Huge volume on Gox dropping the Gox premium dramatically. Little correlation seen at the other exchanges.
- Apple pulls Blockchain.info app from AppStore
- Bitfinex goes buggy (hack?)
- Another huge dump of BitStamp (2000 BTC)
I'm surprised how well we're holding up.
When you've been through this a couple of times, you learn to recognize the buying opportunities.
Throwing the Apple stuff out for a moment and setting the Gox stuff aside, the other things look like a coordinated attack. I mean, the 2nd dump on Bitstamp could have been someone scared shitless on Bitfinex, but the first dump that happened with the DDOS and then, if it turns out Bitfinex was toyed with, then, yes, this would seem like a coordinated attack.
Interesting that people are screaming market manipulation, but these same people don't mention the fact that

On this point, I am with you and aminorex. I'm not in support of gov. watchdogging everyone. We should be able to have some anonymous transfers; there are good reasons and there should remain ways to do it. But being realistic, I don't see how bitcoin can become bigger than it is without some integration and sacrifice on some points.

I agree that maybe Bitcoin will integrate with

How does this work? Too lazy to read all in Reddit but I got an idea. I withdraw a little from btc-e today and the withdraw came out just normal but after it there was an other transaction coming that showed 0.00btc in my mobile app, maybe it was one like this also. Are these spamming transactions so small that they don't really happen even you get a incoming transaction in your wallet but no btc really comes to your wallet because the fee would be bigger than these transactions?
Right now every address that gets sent BTC is also spammed 1 satoshi. This never gets confirmed though so is not spendable... The sender bundles many many addresses into one transaction.

The Gox announcement was bad, but the transaction malleability DDOS was much worse and left a smaller dent. Without another disaster, the worst is behind us. If we follow the pattern of earlier rallies, and corrections, we slowly build upward momentum from here, but nothing parabolic for a while.

There was 5k below $600, less than 1k below $550. Not a lot. I was arquing upward momentum, not much more dumping. Also there was not a lot of people awake in EU (middle of the night).
There isn't a lot of upward momentum yet, but when the glitch is fixed and withdrawals resume, it will come.

That original post I just blurted that out there, and my question is true, I honestly would like to hear some opinions on this topic.
I'm still trying to wrap my head around what might happen when the first nation puts the green light on bitcoin, but my first thought is that other currencies might rush into your currency because of the easy exchange into bitcoin (or something like it).
Basically you would take over the US as the issuer of the new world's reserve currency.
Or maybe you just piss off the other nations enough that they quit dealing with you all together and you end up like a free decentralized and open North Korea?
The nation's currency would most likely locally lose value and therefore relatively lose value compared to other nations' currencies. But since the country now uses Bitcoin, then Bitcoin will be more valuable then other nations' relatively... I have no clue

in other words, i don't care about your lofty Randian free market ideals. while capitalism may be "the best solution we can aspire to", and that would be hard to disagree with, it is also clear that our present form of global capitalism is suffering from a huge amount of inefficiencies, many of which cannot be attributed to meddling governments. how can we reconcile these two things? i have no clue, but we've first got to get our heads out of our asses and stop worshipping the sacred cow long enough to think critically about why the apparatus is failing at efficiently distributing resources.

Monero is very interesting. The technology has been proven for about 2 years in BCN. MRO is a clone with no private mining phase. I have not yet fully evaluated the technology claims, but it is purported to be a robustly anonymous cpu-only coin. I think that the strong performance of DRK is proof that stronger anonymity is highly valued by the market, even where it is known to be defective. If MRO anonymity is a robust as it appears to be, it should displace DRK and BCN very rapidly. It is immature, a fork of the BCN codebase, which is not derived from BTC codebase, but I can easily see this displacing BTC for most use cases, because it does not have the "fairness taint" of DRK and BCN, so it appeals to miners, and it seems cryptographically superior to any of the alternatives. It is not yet exchange traded.
Yes, MRO and BCN are the most anonymous coins out there at the moment. I also think MRO may come to replace Bitcoin, or maybe Zerocash will do that.
