I wonder how much impact coinbase has on price?   If they keep getting capped
and they are the "easiest" way to buy bitcoins in the US would this be part of the
reason why we had softness?

Can't help but notice that a lot of deflating started to occur with coinbase no longer
able to sell coin.

some might interpret that you're implying that climate change isn't real btw . . . .

The climate is changing, yes, as it always does. The idea that there is some serious crisis going on with man-made climate change is a total sham, however.

Regardless of climate, ocean acidification via CO2 absorption is a serious threat to many marine species... especially tasty ones.

Perhaps, and I haven't looked into that specifically but I wouldn't be surprised if that was a made-up thing as well. pH regulation should be among the easiest things for nature to handle. Much more difficult is pollutants and overfishing (that is one resource we can run out of, unlike oil). Leave that to Bitcoin. Property rights defined over oceans would end overfishing immediately.
IT IS made up. There's a lot more CO2 produced naturally than artificially. This is a very nice way to get your tax money for their pockets. You can find out more here (and verify with your scientific sources).

http://www.skepticalscience.com/human-co2-smaller-than-natural-emissions.htm

That's why I hope Bitcoin prevails. I hate those guys.

I had no idea climate scientists were so interested in Bitcoin.  This is great news for adoption.   Next we are going to see hair dressers and telephone sanitizers!

Can we take down (or adjust) the poll please?

To the question:

"Question:    Will Bitcoin trade over 1000$ within a few weeks?"

Only 74% answer 'yes'...

If 100% answered "yes" then Bitcoin would have already been at $1000 by the time the poll was made.

Yep - it's out of date, I was joking - but why not set a new target we can hope for?

I vote for 10k as the poll.   And suggest we reach there by end of 2014.

it has popped twice, one from $900 to 500.. and just yesterday from $1200 to $800. why do people not see this? it was a crash, but it inevitably rebounded.

thats just too fast tho, they are called bear traps

once the bubble pops for real, we will have a few months of consolidation at low prices( like 50% lower than the ATH), much like the bubble pop from 266, only longer.

its going to take longer, because the market is growing and its taking more and more Capital to move the market either way.

As much as I think you are being rational about this.   I doubt it is going to stay flat for months at this point.  Looking at the growth of wallets in the various providers as well as the room to grow on bitpay (their volume was tiny based on where they will get with all the new shopping integrations) we are still in the hot seat.

I was very happy to see steam getting blown off though.   We were in dire need.   If we can keep venting off pressure we will find our new center (much higher it seems).

Where do you think BitPay got the dollars to pay the merchants for all that record high sales volume they processed this weekend?

I bet your guess is right...   I also bet part of the run up was people holding/retaining/buying in preparation for black friday.

i have no idea, really

i thought it would pop at like 800

it didn't, and the TA still looks bullish, so i have to agree we should go higher, i think 3000$ will see alot of resistance maybe to much and then we'll have cheap coins at 1200-900$ for a few months. I strongly believe that nothing not even bitcoin can simply go up forever.

but ya, I can't see into the future, anyone guess is as good as mine.

This is why it is absolutely fascinating to watch and help grow this thing in my own little ways.   Humble and proud to be part of it.

3k does seem like a pretty big hurdle and nothing grows forever (heat death of the universe is a bitch :-)).   That said, some of the thinking is that with enough money/liquidity it will become highly valued by those who want to move millions/billions around.   I can't see it solving that problem at 3k when a thousand coins can cause a big drop at 1k.

this thread is so bullish.  I mean over 70% think $30,000 BTC will happen!

I wish it could, but even if crypto in the form we know it does survive the next 2-3 years,  bitcoin is one of the worst cryptos out there. the guinea pig.  It's soooo slow.  If it does survive it will just be as a store of wealth but for transactions, it's deeply flawed.

anyway, it's heading back to $400 in the next 2 - 3 days.  Maybe Tongue
People can conduct transactions just fine with only 1 confirm - speed is no issue.

Heck, they really only need to wait a few seconds and watch for further transactions from the same addr.   This is not a problem.

Seems like 11 hours to the next jump in difficulty (900M)   Miners gonna feel the pinch.

The point is that people are using it and things like buying expensive assets or even inexpensive assets through the Bitcoin technology creates further network effect and growth.

European finance ministers have reached the basis of an agreement to wind down failing banks and share the costs, Eurogroup President Jeroen Dijsselbloem told CNBC following a 16-hour marathon negotiating session in Brussels.

The agreement is expected to begin with a Cyprus-style "bail-in" process in which major depositors in failing banks are tapped first in an effort to support the lender.

so hmmm do we declare capital gains before or after the bank steals our money? i'm confused.

I wonder if this also impacts funds held in the markets by customers of banks.   What it could do is drive stagnant money into the system.   It will look for homes (Bitcoin is one Smiley).    Other homes would be gold and the stock markets/indexes etc...

Agreed, but then again, the second we think we know something it will change Smiley.   850 or so is a great floor to maintain going through the holidays.   Things are going to explode next year as a new tax season begins for many regions.   Buying during the lull is highly advised for the little guys.   Remember the super big guys don't do much during the holidays as they are complacent and look to take the time off.

Gather round everyone.  I'll tell you how this will play out.  The exchange rate will languish for a while.  New money will flow to the exchanges as interest is increasing, but new buyers will be hesitant to buy, as they may suspect the price is in a downtrend, and so will hold of buying in the hope that they can get the most bitcoins for their money.  This will go on for a while, maybe many months.  The total amount of money waiting to buy will build over this period, and this won't be obvious by merely looking at bids on the order books.

Eventually, the distance of time will minimize the fear of this most recent run-up.  A few people will buy largish amounts, then a few more, and so on.  The bids will begin to pile up on the order books, and a new phase buying like we've just seen (and like we've seen many times before) will begin, which will quickly accelerate after old highs are broken.

Then repeat.

You are scaring me!  What happened to our bearlama?

My suggestion for whales who want to see Bitcoin succeed.

Note the following, we are heading into a holiday period where gifts are exchanged.   Many are now providing Bitcoin as gifts to newbies.   If you want to impress the newbies with Bitcoin then you would provide a nice gradual ramp through March so that they can see how awesome a deflationary/scarce currency can be Smiley.

Tis the season to drive massive uptake.   Let's make the devs and miners work to keep up with the TPS!

I don't think it will go much lower anymore in the short term. Even if they sell it to zero in China does not mean that the west would not have competition on who would get the cheap coins. Short term we are very oversold and it is only a liquidity/waking hours issue to go back up. The fact that there is a huge arbitrage coin influx from China dampens it a "little bit", though, but this is already in prices in the west.

The exponential trend (now at $437) was touched, which means that longer term bitcoin is no more overvalued. I regard this as a good entry point and have bought thousands of bitcoins yesterday and today, closing all speculative short positions at a nice profit and gone speculative long with funds I need in 1-2 months.

My last bid in Bidstamp is sitting at 421.42, please somebody sell into it! Smiley

This week was the perfect storm.  We have a bunch of people that need to cash out for Christmas (I know not everyone celebrates Christmas but I think many do Wink )  couple that with the China fiasco and we have a nice big crash.  Just thankful it was not worse really.

Next week there will be Christmas money flooding in, and a few people that want to buy before the end of the year for whatever reason, (Perhaps because Second Market is giving a discount on fees if they buy in before the end of 2013 for one example)

It will go up before the end of the year.  I have no doubts.

I think you nailed it

I am giving bitcoins as gifts.  Suspect a certain fraction of those will be immediately transferred to FIAT.   Perhaps a few will hold and use for "real" as either an investment or used in the economy.

Not sure if I am a good sample but this would then follow with a Christmas "sell."   I would give it a few weeks after Christmas before the behavior settles into a more understandable trend.

Then again, who knows, maybe we will all be hunted down by the 'leet financial termination squads in our local regimes and the value will go to zero Smiley

The immediate trend is strongly UP. On daily basis we are way oversold. I expect an advance to 666 area in the following hours/days. After that, the downtrend resumes and visiting the long-term trendline at about 450 is a strong possibility.

I think Christmas week through new years will be interesting.   Institutional "normal" investors probably won't play but the small may have an opportunity to spend some time getting setup to purchase bitcoins or exchanging fiat for bitcoins.   This might be married up with those who have been gifted coins exchanging them for Fiat/products.   Mass psychology will definitely be interesting.

The exponential trend of USDBTC from the start of Bitcoin (3.1.2009-) is already quite established. I recalculate it monthly, and during the last 12 months the slope of the trendline has fluctuated only 2.9%! Expressed in doubling time, its trend has been between 96 days 8 hours and 99 days 0 hours for the whole year. According to SlipperySlope, the trend is the beginning part of a logistic function of bitcoin adaptation. The model leads to $1M/BTC in 2016-17.

We are now at $443 in the exponential trend. The definition of "trend" is that price stays as long time above it as it spends below it. The tops of April and November were >3x the trendprice. The lows in between were 30-50% below the trend.

If this holds, it is near certain to go below 500, more likely than not to cross 400, but unlikely to touch 300.

April crash had 3 capitulations in $60 range, and now we have just seen 1 so far, it is very likely that more follows.

Nailed it...   Not sure about going below 500 but if it does I have prepared my contingencies :-)

My problem now is that I am so impatient.   Bitcoin needs 100% adoption now!    I wonder what the USD to bitcoin exchange rate will be when that is the case?   I don't mean all USD gone.   I just mean when everyone on the big I is using it on a frequent basis.

If $900-$1200 wasn't a healthy price 20 days ago, it isn't one now.

Who says it wasn't?
Uh... we just came crashing down from these prices. Now it is supposed to be all good?

Crash? For Bitcoin that's an inbreath !

Bitcoin is breathing heavy Cheesy.   Must be all that exercise.

I have to concede that you are correct. The government is not a band of thieves. Thieves don't use violence or threat of violence to steal. Robbers do. The government is a band of robbers.

I quite like the alliteration of "Bandits with Badges".

Bandits Brandishing Badges.

Bandits Brandishing Badges Behave Belligerently Because Bad Bitcoining Begets Big Banks

Okay, that is the best I could do on short notice.

In Feb the new market participants absorbed the bulk of profit taking / panic selling, now they are fighting over random 200BTC scraps that come along while trying not to push price to high just yet, because cheep coin accumulation.

Can you show us on the coin cheepness [sic] indicator chart? perhaps with a train and a dinosaur. That would make my night  Cool
