It's official: 50% spread between Gox and Bitstamp.

Absolute record.

If Gox resumes withdrawals with no problem, the sellers will have had HUGE losses, and the buyers HUGE gains.

Interesting times.

I just hope it was Mark doing all the "selling" on Gox

This is my first (and last?) time using Ripple. Such a strange user experience. When it works, it's great - fast and cheap. But waaaay to many cryptic error messages. 11 failed attempts before it finally worked.

Its market capitalization could grow to $1.75 trillion which would make each bitcoin worth $100,000.

I'm fine with SegWit + 2mb, so long as the following 2mb hard fork code is tested extensively beforehand.
If there is going to be a software bug, it will be in SegWit not in the 2mb hard fork. The hard fork is just a few lines, SegWit is a massive and complex change and probably will have bugs.

Here is my price prediction: $10,900 USD - the date will depend on the mania levels. It could possibly happen in this run up, maybe the next one. Anything under this number is good value. If it overshoots - sell.

I based this number on the average operating expense of Paypal, Visa & Mastercard (7.1b) divided by the annual new coin supply. In other words, miner expenses.

After the next halving, the prediction doubles.

I have spoken.

If only the Average Joes of the world would realize the truth about the inflation they experienced in the past, as well as the heightened level of inflation they will begin to experience in the coming decade, they'd do well to put savings into bitcoin just for that very reason: just to hedge against inflation and protect their purchasing power. The price rising > 5% per year should just be a bonus.

It shouldn't be about "making a quick buck."

But alas, they are too caught up in buying things and making debt payments to be concerned about savings. Just like the govt and the banks want them to be. Forever in debt and on the hamster wheel.

Kids in the west have not experienced runaway inflation. They will freak out when it happens again.

I must confess something...

When I discovered Bitcoin about 2 years ago it blew my mind. I'm a scientist/engineer and my job is to design things, so I immediately understood the idea and its implications. Much like Andreas Antonopoulos's experience, I found myself skipping meals and forgetting to sleep while reading all a could find about it. I thought that this invention had the power and potential to change the world for the better. To help people. And I still believe that.

But something spoiled the dream for me. Greed. I was lucky enough to buy a good amount of BTC when they were worth 200 € each. I didn't plan it, it was pure luck. And then I found myself thinking about how much money I could earn, when I should sell my BTC and become rich (in a fiat setting), etc. I didn't care about Bitcoin "the world-changing invention" anymore, all I ended up caring was how much money I could make out of it.

Things are looking up, and my goal may be realised sooner that I thought, but is this a healthy goal? Are we all supporting or destroying Bitcoin by thinking like this? I see this greed in many people's posts here in the forum. It saddens me. Many here talk pompously and boasting how they're going to sell their stash when its fiat-based value reaches a set target. Is this all you see in Bitcoin? A money-making machine? Are we all failing to see the bigger picture?

Sorry for using WO to post this... I just wanted to get it off my chest.

You sound like a nice person.

Just Hodl for a few more years and you will have plenty of time to ponder your moral dilemma.
Perhaps you can find a good cause to support with your new-found wealth.

The activity number is determined in this way:
time = number of two-week periods in which you've posted since your registration
activity = min(time * 14, posts)

Rough summary of what this means: If you post once per day on average, then you will eventually get the maximum number of activity points that you can get. Posting more than once per day on average is useless for increasing activity. The maximum number of activity points you can get is 1 per day, but your activity score only updates every two weeks. Therefore, it will take about 100 days to get 100 activity if you post once per day on average.

Activity is updated every hour.

There's a lot more to gain in terms of consumer (cheap) payments, anonymous payments, smart contracts and more if we are just patient and allow developers to build on top of Segwit.

My point of view, too. I guess it is the point of view of many non-politicized bitcoiners who just want an increase of utility and value, while keeping the strong points: permissionless and trustless, therefore decentralized. Non-inflationary.

It will be interesting to see what the come up with, but I will take a lot of convincing before I move any coins off into a side chain - to me that smells like an alt-coin and I'm not into alt-coins.

It's true though isn't it.....

The more forks that happen will prove that everything that's forked is bullshit compared to the real Bitcoin. It will strengthen bitcoin in the long run.

^^
Agree 100% but in my mind there are 2 types of forks -

1) people forking off the main chain and going their own way - to survive they will need a emergency difficulty adjustment. Hopeful most of these will die off asap which will reinforce Bitcoin over and over again and

2) forks of the main chain that everyone follows.

I honestly think we need more of the second type of fork - it will progress the Bitcoin state of the art (even if the improvements are tiny and incremental), bring the community together and build confidence that we have our shit together. Right now we are lacking the leadership that can make it happen, which is a shame because it makes the core team look weak - technically sound, but politically weak and naive. I cringe when I see all the emotional No2X / UASF stuff.

If/when the price hits 6k that will wipe out about a third of those coins and there will still be a crazy amount of $$ on the sidelines missing out and presumably waiting for a dip to 3k that will never happen.

There could be another stampede on the way..... if not, it still looks like we have reasonable support at this crazy level.

It looks to me like the idea of "seasteads" is to get together among rich people and not pay taxes to a state, but instead pay for everything (defense, law enforcement, etc.). So you'd end up with two classes of people, the rich, and the people who work for the rich.

Yes, because when everything is blockchain based, only the rich benefit.

Better get rid of your bitcoin now because it's just something for rich people to not pay taxes. Only the rich can use a currency that the government doesn't distribute. It already costs over $5k, only a rich person can afford that.

I guess I should tell the many socialists working on this that their expectations of helping the environment and having self sustaining design, closed loop food systems, renewable energy, recycling systems, a solution for refugees, coral development, etc. is just going to benefit the rich.

A seastead will be a tiny speck on an ocean that is twice the size of all the countries in the world combined. Yet people will still be pissed off if there are rich people out in middle of nowhere being free rich.

The blockchain is not miraculous, it's a technology, it won't solve humankind's problems. And yes, greed is one of our problems. I don't pretend to be immune to it. I used to support communist ideals, but nowadays, I've become cynical, I don't see any way for such ideals to come about aside from being governed by some kind of benevolent AI.
Giving up one childish fantasy in favor of another is not much of an improvement.

Here is what is going to happen. A lot of people are going to die. After that, we may be able to build something better. But first people need to die.

Anybody here wonder how long before Ibian opens fire on a crowd of innocents and Torque calls it a false flag? Roll Eyes

Totally legit human desire.

The only problem is, after the SWx2 fork I don't see any more forks on the horizon.

What we need is a service like https://build-a-co.in/ to make it easier for any noob to create a Bitcoin fork. The user would only need to enter a name and desired start date. It would generate everything you need - a wallet app, a professional looking promotional website, announcement thread, Reddit forum, twitter account, emails to the major exchanges to get them on board - you know - all the usual bells and whistles.

It's obvious from the Bitcoin Gold attempt that these guys need some help.

I am thinking the price is going to skyrocket in the next few days:
- There is a lot of cash on the exchanges right now, everyone is waiting to buy the dip that will never happen due to the support from genuine new demand
- A lot of people want to get their coins off the exchanges before the fork & before the exchanges freeze transfers - so that they control the private keys to both sides of the fork - coins on exchanges are going to be in very short supply at the time of the fork
- If there is a significant loss of hash power blocks could take up to 50 mins - this would slow down the resupply of coins on the exchanges. The price will be jaw dropping once we are past the fork but there are no bitcoins to be found anywhere.

Sorry for all the people waiting for the dip to $2k - it ain't going to happen.

As someone who bought their first Bitcoin in 2012 for $20,

Indeed, I can't help but laugh at all the thousands of newcomers who just read r/bitcoin and suddenly think they are scaling experts. That Bitcoin should be able to run a node on every Raspberry Pi in Afghanistan. Yada yada yada. This is psychologically manipulated groupthink. Let's face it - many of the people getting into Bitcoin today are "newbies" who weren't very smart or educated in the first place. But they all like to act like they are, ESPECIALLY when it comes to their opinions on the Blocksize debate - an opinion that was only formed through reddit. Oh boy do they love repeating those opinions, and screaming down anyone who disagrees, like a bunch of drunken fratboys who think they are about to lose their virginity. Only a very small minority are capable of using logic or reason.

It's both amusing and kind of sickening to watch happen.

Anyway, now that the dust has settled and the "1mb forever" crowd has won, Legacy Bitcoin will likely never scale in any meaningful kind of way - Meaning Legacy BTC will never be anything more than a speculator's toy to get rich, a gateway to altcoins and FIAT and a settlement layer.

However, I still fully expect the combined speculator and institutional investor money to take Legacy Bitcoin to 50 - 100K and beyond. However, it will become impossible to move coin at some point on the main chain , with $100+ fees, making a very large percentage of BTC wallets unspendable. At that point, the vast majority of Crypto users and commerce will have already moved to either Bitcoin Cash, Monero or Ethereum. In the long long run, 5+ years, I fully expect either Bitcoin Cash, Monero or Ethereum to become the #1 coin with the highest market cap. It's inevitable now that Bitcoin will never scale - and let's be honest, Lightning Network will either never exist or will never deliver as promised --- which means BTC is going to be stuck where it is now from the scaling perspective, with only a few band-aids thrown on top, likely forever -- unless the miners finally grow a pair, say enough is enough and stand up to the bought out Corporate shills at Blockstream, but I'm not holding out hope for that outcome at all.

I've also been around a long time and agree with your sentiments. The behavior on reddit is terrible - I can only assume they are just young and stupid? I try my best not to assume malice or conspiracy...

I would like to clarify my position regarding Mark Karpeles lest my last post be taken out of context.  While he does look eminently  punchable on that particular pic, I actually bear him no ill will.  It is my belief that Mark was simply in over his head, that when he got robbed he tried to find a workaround with the willy bot but events caught up with him.

My personal story is that I was able to get the lion's share of my modest holdings off of GOX without issue well after the alarm bells were sounding.  I believe that he set some sort of algorithm or threshold that locked large accounts near the end, while allowing smaller fish to escape, and for this noble act I applaud him.

I still think he was a dumbass who was in over his head, but I do not believe he ever meant to harm anyone.

I don't think any us took it as serious, but good on you for clarifying.

While we are on the topic of Mark - congrats to him for his amazing transformation.

They probably run out of ammo during the last dump, 2nd leg is not as low as the first one.

Sure, hence why we see so many pennants on charts. But I still think that we need to test 5k. Enough big money getting in around there should result in much more pumping

The lower BTC drops and the higher BCH goes the less ammo they (he) has.  BCH is much easier to pump than BTC is to dump though.

The good thing for Bitcoin is that the recent rise appears to have low correlation with any movements in BCH. This means that the recent rise does not come from BCH holders playing the markets and moving their coins back and forth, but possibly from genuine, new investors intending to keep their coins and support BTC, especially now that there are no forks on the horizon to cause uncertainty.

Could this mean that we are heading for some stability and a rise to a new ATH and beyond? I hope so.

The Choo-Choo is revving and standing by...

I'm also chiming in to agree with this.

Longer term if BCH eventually drifts down to 0.1 BTC (which I think it will) it'll be really interesting to see how hard the BCH whales try to defend it. It might end up being Custer's last stand with a bit of luck.

Even if we are correcting, the money seems to be flowing out of Bitcoin and into Bitcoin Cash. The original Bitcoin holders ate not losing much. But if you took a punt and dumped your Bitcoin cash, then you are exposed to more volatility.

It's nothing new - money has always flowed back and forth between Bitcoin and altcoins. Personally I'm only interested in owning Bitcoin. I've missed out on plenty of altcoin and ICO pumps - but I don't want to play that game.

How do you claim all the fork coins if you don't expose your private keys?
First move all your coins to a new address so the old private key is no longer needed for BTC. This is a safety measure.

Then use the old private key to 'sweep' the coins into a Wallet. Coinomi on android is good for this task - can confirm for both Bitcoin gold and Bitcore.

I don't get why people feel the need to hold on and try to time the market to sell these airdrops  - the last thing I need to be doing is tracking the price of a thousand shitcoins every day. Yes the shitcoin could go up for a moonshot - but so could bitcoin. Nobody knows.

Yes, I know, echo chamber.  Just had to write that thought out.

And I need to spit this out.

When I acquired my bitcoins, I promised I would hold them for 10 years – I knew it would take a long time for such a radical idea to be understood and accepted.

This year we had an interesting transition from pushing the blockchain concept back to the core Bitcoin value proposition. A small increase in understanding translated to a big price jump. The ecosystem is in much better shape these days but there is still a long way to go before Bitcoin is normalised into our society. You will know the price is levelling off when:

This all hit home when I watched this video recently thanks to Jimmy Song:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TerIjELO7IY

Here we have a mix of current day BTC personalities: Jimmy Song, Tone Vays, Bitfinex’ed, BTCVix and Flibber.
I will refrain from commenting on these guys individually suffice to say it won’t be like this in years to come. Instead it will be presented more like this:
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-11-17/bitcoin-hits-record-high/9163794

I will say I was astounded by the comments from BTCVix and Flibber about Bitfinex. I sense delusion going on - they risk ending up looking like these guys. If you have been warned ahead of time and you decide to leave your money there because of pure emotions and then think it's somehow smart to double down on the stupidity and fly to Japan and ask for your money back and let people take photos of you??? Don't do this. If Finex does go down at least take it like a man.

Hi to all!

This is my first post to this forum. I have been following this thread for a couple of month and found the discussions to be the most informed I've come across by quite some way.

I have a very modest bitcoin holding. Just less and 1 BTC. So i can't speak about Lambo's or sea front houses on the California Coast. However i can speak with the hope that one day i will be able to pay off my mortgage early. So i hope that my modest investment will become a life changing one in the future.

Anyway, i thought i'd post this chart which i'm sure many of you have seen before but what i found interesting was the date this chart predicts that 1 BTC would be worth 10k USD. "22-11-17". I can only hope this chart plays out to 2024. Cos if it does then i can pay off my mortgage and still have enough left over to book a holiday to the California coast. Who knows! Might see one of you guys driving down Highway 1 in your Lambo.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJT2CbfHTpo&feature=youtu.be&t=43m06s

Sounds like it.

Bcash is a magnet for these nutjobs. It doesn't take much to set them off and expose their lack of social skills.

Exhibit B Craig (too bad we don't have video)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7YUTq7_vO3A

The interviewer sounds like a dick, but still.....

If you watch Roger in these older videos (from the Bitcoin unlimited days) you can see him fully exposed. His argument is basically I use bitcoin, I got lucky and discovered Bitcoin early,  I'm a millionaire, so I'm smarter than all the developers combined.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JarEszFY1WY
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XdyIJ-BUPaU

He walks away very smug thinking he has won the argument, which of course he has not. Tone and Johnny tried, but didn't land a knock out punch over Roger's constant yelling.

Interestingly you can see a moment in the second video at 53:20 where a light bulb goes off and Roger realises all he need to do is an EDA to make his next clown coin work. Too bad Tone actually gave him this idea.

But when it happens, 11k within a week

You might be right - let's see how long it takes to get over 10k.

After we pass 10k I expect a quick rise to around 18k (or above - max 40k) as per master luc followed by a correction back down to around 9k level or lower - the 50d MA is only at 6900 and the 100d is at 5500- these are still quite possible although they are both rising quickly.

It's going to be a fun ride whatever happens.

Two Chicago-based exchanges to begin trading bitcoin futures in December

watch for the fireworks

So I have a question about the futures trading: Will these idiots actually have to buy and hold bitcoins in order to buy or sell, or are they just betting on the price like a numbers racket?

It's cash settled so they don't have to own any physical at any stage, but that won't prevent arb trading.

Quote
CME Globex and CME ClearPort: 5:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. CT Sunday – Friday
I presume this means 23 hour/day trading 6 days per week?

The other interesting thing is the price limits:
Quote

Price limits for a given Business Day are calculated in relation to a reference price, which generally will be set at the most recent Bitcoin Futures settlement price, calculated at 4:00 p.m. London time each Business Day. The reference price may be adjusted at the sole discretion of the Exchange to incorporate BRR changes on non-trading days. A price limit of 20% above or below the reference price and special price fluctuation limits equal to 7% above or below the reference price and 13% above or below the reference price apply. Trading will not be permitted outside of the 20% range above or below the reference price.

The CME will shutdown trading if limits are exceeded, but the crypto exchanges will keep going - we could get a divergence. Image a week where it rises more than 20% every day => Hyperbitcoinisation ensues.

Not quite like the weather, they can not make it snow out of the clear blue sky, but they will certainly have some BTC on the exchanges to defend their bets. Volatility will go through the roof. In the long term honey badger don't care, but we will see some spectacular action, that is for sure.

It's not doing badly for a free coin... I would never buy it though.

Same with Bcash. I have never (and would never) buy Bcash. If there ever was a hope of me taking this coin seriously, it all died when I read that "Letter from the CEO" nonsense written by that pirate guy...  Roll Eyes
But it was just a prank letter. Roll Eyes

I don't think it was meant as a prank letter...

Or maybe it's my (lack of) sense of humour...
No it was serious. But somebody insisted that it wasn't (I believe in this thread). But maybe I failed to read his sarcasm... lol

He was just trying to make the (valid) point that Bcash is permissionless - but the way he chose to demonstrate it caused confusion. Not sure I would call it sarcasm - maybe irony? I'm not sure what the best English word is for it.

The whole saga was embarrassing on so many levels - for people to attack him for this was doubly stupid. Bcash has plenty of flaws - this isn't one of them.

Tether being discussed on Bloomberg.

I have read Bitfinexed’s critique of the Friedman audit of Bitfinex. It’s pretty clear that Bitfinexed has no experience of interpreting audit reports and is going at completely the wrong issues.

That said, Bitfinex has done a piss poor job of managing the issue.  It should publish monthly transparency reports at the least, and those reports should be signed off by Friedman.  So it only has itself to blame.  And attempting to sue people rather than improve its reporting practices is a bad sign.

Yep.

The concept of Tether is great, but because it's the fiat on/off ramp it needs to be run the same way the fiat world runs otherwise it **will** get shut down one day. We have seen this story before. No amount of "secret sauce" can stop it forever.

If one of the big banks (or nation states?) steps up and creates a USD tether with all the audit bells and whistles, AML & KYC  and all that crap it will be a huge boon for the whole ecosystem.

BTW when the feds do finally freeze all the tether bank accounts, all that money is going to flow back from the shitcoins to the Honey badger. It will be an epic day.

Indeed.

It wasn't my intention to spread FUD. Rather to make people aware of the manipulation they're about to be exposed to. The only way to combat it is to decouple the behaviour of the cash and futures markets as much as possible.

The only way to do that if for people to *want* to hold bitcoin the asset as opposed to bitcoin the derivative or USD cash. That means they'll need to resist the tendency to value BTC in terms of fiat currencies and instead value it for its utility, store of value and future-proofing qualities.

i.e. hold through-ought dips and crashes.

It doesn't necessarily look like FUD to me. It could be construed as neutral speculation on what's going to happen next. Actually, that's how I'm receiving it. The summary of the quoted posts could be briefly phrased as "hodl for dear life."

I'm trying to understand if there's a better strategy that exploits the opponent's strength at one's advantage, like financial Aikido for hodlers. So I was stirring discussion, hoping to elicit informed, intelligent replies from savvy forum dwellers.

Incidentally, I think that the scenario depicted by the "FUD" (which, I repeat, doesn't look like FUD to me) is a medium term one. At first, naked shorting without a substantial hard underlying hedge (real btc in hand) can be too risky even for sharks.

The argument is that one party can control the price up and down in a controlled way - over and over again.

Now I could dump right now and move the price if I wanted too - but I would get rekt because there are other parties out there ready to pounce if I do something stupid like that.

Now if you are asking me if the volatility will go up or down - I don't know, but this is actually an interesting question.  I'm guessing it will go down because of increased liquidity. The infographic implies it will go up. Time will tell.

What BTC is doing now just makes think of what ETH is going to do next year. The adoption rate of muggles now is astounding and I wouldn't be surprised to see BTC at 50,000 by the middle of next year. And if that is the case, ETH will be past 2,500. But that of course is my uneducated guess.

Very uneducated.

How nice. After a lovely little g-note correction we're right back at an ATH less than 3 hours later.

It's a very nice little run up this one. Little dips along the way and plenty of money on the sidelines buying the dips. Lots of new money coming in, plenty of coins still available. Local anecdotes and chatter on non-crypto forums indicate FOMO is building but not full FOMO yet.

The real vertical and scary stuff is still ahead of us.

The shitcoins are taking a bath too - which keeps the focus on BTC. All good.

What could a potential correction bring us to?  I think most of us agree that we're due for one but for those of us that have been here long enough, bitcoin "crashing to 10k" would sound like a pipe dream a couple years ago.

Looking at the weekly chart and comparing it to 2013 it looks like the top could be around $42,000 and the support will ladder down - from some levels not yet established, then $7,700, $4,400 and maybe even $2,500

The top will be hard to call but keep an eye on the coins available on Bitstamp. When it drops below 1,300 the top is not far away. Currently at 2,586 coins - so it's a long way to go.

You really see us crashing from $42k to$2k? In this day and age? With all our technology?!

No I don't expect it but who knows? They just look like the support levels on the weekly chart. We will build some more support levels on the way up - the slower we go the better - but we all know it won't be slow.

Hopefully the newbies are learning the hodl meme.

CBOE futures launch in 24 hours.

Each contract is for a US$ cash payment equal to 1 Bitcoin at the Gemini price at the Settlement Time, which is 4 pm Central Time on the Settlement Date.  Minimum price tick is $10.  Contracts settle in January, February and March.

XBT/F8 January

XBT/G8 February

XBT/H8 March

Please place your price predictions for the opening price of each of the three futures contracts.  Note:   I am still trying to work out the Settlement Date in each month. If someone has that info I will edit this post.

The expiration dates are here:

After launch of bitcoin at CBOE futures

Then bitcoin becomes a casino gulag where the house always wins and there is no reason to go near it instead of metals.  In metals they can only naked short it to cost of production.  In bitcoin, cost of production is fully floating and recursive based on it's own demand via hashrate, so they can literally naked short it to 0 instead of some type of cost of production floor because no such thing even exists in bitcoin.  Shorting metals below cost of production causes miners to stop bringing gold and silver to market, so it's counterintuitive because it would just create scarcity, so they don't do it (or at least not for long periods of time).  Shorting bitcoin below cost of production forces miners to turn off, thus lowering the temporary cost of production floor even further while the supply from miners recirculating coins remains unchanged.  This is why naked shorting is FAR MORE detrimental to bitcoin than metals.

This is nonsense for a very simple reason. If there is gold price increase there will be increase in supply by opening more gold mines. if there is bitcoin price increase you can't increase supply by opening more bitcoin mines!

The whole futures narative will be a turd and fizzle into the coke filled brains of Wallstreet in a few days. Nothing to see in Coinlandia.

Agree. The only valid use case I can think of would be a whale protecting their position at the top of the market when they know they have a large fiat expense coming up (eg tax) and they don't want to cash out yet. The problem is they can't use BTC to underwrite the trade (it has to be Fiat) so it's useless even for simple hedging.

Tone's recent interview with Ugly Goat explains the whole scenario well:

CBOE rules allow the futures to be linked to trades of underlying positions held on Gemini, called an “Exchange of Contract for Underlying Position”.  So you can trade BTC on Gemini for BTC futures on CBOE.  And you can sell your future for real bitcoin.

Then it can be useful.

The CME one doesn't have that AFAIK.

not really, the only one that seems good at $150 ish per coin is SuperBitcoin.  Syncing that wallet now and imported private keys into the QT wallet (for a wallet that is clean/empty now on the BTC network, but had coins back on Dec 15th in it).  Should net enough for a small car or nice vacation one day hehe so worth few hours of effort.
Report back and let us know how it goes, and what program to use if it works? I could use a small car, come to think of it.

Pretty good actually. Moving a big chunk from Bitcoin Segwit to Bitcoin Cash has worked out splendidly.

This piece of news hasn't been discussed much here yet, so what do you think of the Wavecrest debit card shutdown? The official word from VISA is that Wavecrest didn't comply with VISA regulations - but there's no hint at which specific regulations were disattended.

To me, it smells like a few governments put some pressure on VISA to end that service. VISA have been swift to oblige, as they always are as soon as a big actor uses power voice mode. But I might just be a rookie conspiracy theorist...

No need for a conspiracy theory - it's the same as banks blocking transfers to bitcoin exchanges - or closing accounts associated with Bitcoin - or limiting or double checking transfers to exchanges etc. It's just normal risk management. Accounts get hacked every day and once the money is drained off into cryptoland the bank has no way to recover it.

FFS the block size again? Has anyone noticed what's happening with the price and alts and stuff?

I posted recently we has some dojis and would have an interesting day - and indeed we did - a predictable breakout. Now have a look - we have a situation that could be misinterpreted as a BTC bull trap by the shitcoin-tards and that is exactly what has happened - alts recovering a bit after their recent falls.

In other words, BTC has already passed the capitulation phase and it ready to boom again, but the alts are still in denial that this run is over for them. /r/ripple etc are still bullish - they are ones who will end up selling ripple at the bottom and FOMOing into BTC when the price explodes.

Still bullish AF

Sorry, I couldn't resist making the JJG theory.   Grin

But seriously, if you've read any of the papers written by CSW it is very clear that he is not the same person who wrote the Bitcoin white paper or communicated here on the forum in the early days.

Here's a critique I did on CSWs recent paper (that he later retracted) where he tried (and failed) to prove the Eyal and Sirer's selfish mining attack was a fallacy:

https://bitco.in/forum/threads/wright-or-wrong-lets-read-craig-wrights-selfish-miner-fallacy-paper-together-and-find-out.2426/

CSW later bet me 1 BTC on this question, and lost (and never paid up), which is not a question that Satoshi would get wrong:

That said, CSW does seem to have information about early bitcoin that makes me think that he might have somehow been involved. But, no, he is not Satoshi.

Thanks for the honest answer. Respect.

Thanks for all the effort you put into explaining your position clearly for us all to read. In years to come when Bitcoin is still number one and Bcash is long forgotten, I think you will be smart enough to figure out where your logic was off. But as you say, you still have your BTC so it's all good from a financial point of view, but you have burned a few bridges today. Maybe you will be smart enough to figure out how to rebuild them.

I'm not a computer scientist kind of guy and I don't like maths. My strengths lies in other areas of specialization.
I have always tried to do and study things I like, rather then pursuing a traditional career and that have lead me on to many interesting paths, crypto being one of them.

However, when I get a bank card I don't give a rat's ass how it actually works, and the bank doesn't tell me either. They just tell me how to use it. The same goes for just about everything else i buy, the TV salesman doesn't tell me how the TV works, just how to use it et cetera.
But when it comes to crypto it's always the other way around, every thread and info page talks ad nauseam about how it works, and very little about how to use it.
I for example no nothing at all about how to use segwit, and yet segwit have been talked about for ages. And I consider myself fairly intelligent. Just imagine then, when average Joe comes to bitcoin and is told to use segwit to lower fees. That won't tell him anything.
Why can't core make a information page that tells you how to use it? And make sure that page is seen among the noobs, and for that matter oldies like me without a degree in computer science. Why do they and everybody else have to talk non stop about incomprehensible technicalities?
I don't give a fuck about the underlying technology, I want to know how to use it.

And by the way, can you make a segwit paper wallet? And if so how?
That is one of the things that core should tell people if they want adoption.

Why are you so stressed? You can use the CLI in the core client if you want to segwit /s

Seriously they need to fix that asap.

Does anyone know if they intend to build Lightning network support into the Core client GUI?

That's exactly what I'm talking about, that just made my brain hurt, without telling me how to use it.

A few observations about the graphic.

The picture of the network is highly distorted, showing only 3 end users! when really theres hundred of thousands or millions potentially. HIghly connected hubs will be numbered in the hundreds (I feel I'm being generous with that number). That is a highly centralised network, nothing like the depiction.

I doubt many people use a hot wallet for everyday spending. The use case in which people have a spending wallet is already defunct. Who spends bitcoin when the fees are more than the cost of the purchase, you don't spend it.

The promise of low fees on LN was also made onchain in the early days. When I first used bitcoin most people didnt even put a fee. I suspect fees will not be low on LN, only lower than onchain fees.

When the internet appeared I was sure it would fail because I could not imaging a scenario where companies would pay to run expensive undersea cables that keep up with the demand (and all the other infrastructure) - and let me use it for 'free'. Somehow it works. This time I'm am keeping an open mind. There is enough money on the table so I'm sure something workable will emerge.

I got to be brutally honest here, where did this bullshit rumor come from? Seems like some fake news that whales would put out there so that newb traders go long on margin and get rekt.

What bullshit rumor ? About January and February bonuses likely having a portion moved to exchanges for cryptocoin purchasing ?

A lot of people get paid on Thursdays or the 15 of every month. It has zero impact. It's bullshit and childish to think the price works like that. It doesn't. Even if it did, it would be priced in already.

the chain is constantly forking which is a huge problem. The forks are caused by a flaw in the SetBestChain logic. PoS blocks of a lower height (aka. blocks that should be less trustworthy and rejected) are being accepted as valid and erasing valid PoW, PoS, and transactions. The net effect is that work is being lost / wasted while older PoS account are benefiting from a reduced coin supply and the ability to wipe out, in some cases, hours or work by other miners. Worse, transactions are being lost into the void. If you scan the block chain manually you can find plenty of transactions that were sent on one chain, then overwritten, and are currently sitting in the chain with 0 confirms despite being valid transactions because they were eaten on a fork. I've seen some for well over a million PAC get lost to the void -- which is a MASSIVE problem.

A heads up on the airdrop situation. You can now sell a bunch of these fork directly through the latest Bitpie wallet on Android (must download the .apk).

You have to first move the coins to the "Pie Bank". Once they've received enough confirmations (schedule here) they'll be available on the exchange. To access said exchange, you have to select your coin from the main screen then tap the button along the bottom that looks like the refresh or recycling symbol. The orderbook takes a minute to load. You may then proceed to dump for BTC. You can withdraw to your wallet from the bank without ID verification.

At the moment, the only one worth dumping is BTP imho, which, at BTC0.0003 and a 1:10 ratio is fetching around 0.3% per BTC.

Thanks for the info. Did you actually manage to sell BTP?

BTP is (as far as I know) was Bitcoin Platinum - which doesn't exist anywhere. They seem to be calling it "Bitcoin Pay" which is also very sketchy / non existent. Who on earth would buy these shitcoins?

Pop quiz: Convince an average low/middle class fiat-loving law-abiding person who doesnt believe in a failing or fraudlent banking system that they should use bitcoin, without talking about its price or making profit by trading it. Present what benefits they will reap by using bitcoin as opposed to banks, VISA, google pay, venmo, etc. Anything besides capital gain?
Your answer can be found in the BitConnect marketing manual.

Let’s see what we have in history - picking only long grinding crashes that have lasted more than 7 weeks.  We are currently on week 8.

June 2011:  94%

April 2013:  79%

December 2013:  87%

I think these are our only comparable data points but happy to be corrected. This is not a flash crash.

On this basis we should assume a final price between 79% and 94% down. Let us be conservative and say 75% to 95% price decline.

On this rationale we should buy aggressively between $4,900 down to $980.  Perhaps we should start earlier than $4900 so as not to be greedy but not too much if we believe the model.
Please show me the 87% crash of December 2013?
I can't see it.

No.  You take BTC as "the one true bitcoin."  As for me, I say that I don't know.  Maybe BTC will remain dominant; but maybe BCH with its greater block size limit will overtake it.  Or maybe a new branch will prevail.  It doesn't matter to me because Bitcoin is the sum of its forks and I hold them all.

Bcash is a scam coin, just like all the other shitcoins. End of story.

the reason why the current crash feels different, is that previous crashes attacks the future valuation of bitcoin, i.e segwit failure, china ban,

the current crash tease upon the valuation of bitcoin post tether - wells fargo issue, which brought further questioning on the original run of bitcoin valuation on MT GOX, hence no legit bounce will be felt until tether blow up

^^ Total rubbish.

What next? The butthurt haters will keep on hating because crypto threatens their worldview. That's the reality - but Bitcoin will keep on being Bitcoin. And finally Tether - it's survived all this shit and held it's value through this epic price move and FUD. It's not perfect, but it's critical to the ecosystem to have at least one pegged crypto. It's the best we have at the moment until some bank or government gets some balls and creates an official pegged crypto for us to use.

Support them But now its on ledger nano s....

I just discovered a better way right now. You use two apps, Bither and Bitpie. In Bither you go to "import private key", write it there, then click on "get fork coins", select the coin you want, the private key, and then it will ask for a Bitpie address to send them. In Bitpie you create a new address, and the forks will already be there, just click on "receive" for each fork (each have a different color), and it will give you an address, then sent the coins from Bither there.

Now the question is where to sell these altcoins for bitcoins. SBTC and BCD have few exchanges, but they are closed for deposits right now.

https://steemit.com/cryptocurrency/@olsm/how-to-claim-bitcoin-diamond-bcd-super-bitcoin-sbtc-and-bitcoin-gold-btg

Move your bitcoin to a new wallet before doing that.

I actually managed to sell "BTF" (Bitcoin faith) for pennies using that combo. I was amazed because it's almost non existent - I couldn't find a github repo or block explorer.

When I tried "BTP" the transaction got confirmations but the BTP coins just disappeared. Again no block explorer to work out what happened.

I suspect some of these are trying to do replay attacks - so be very careful. In fact the app now says BTV is doing just that.

Take note of something guys, take note.

The trolls and shitcoin shills that plagued this WO thread all last year, posting nearly multiple times per day, are completely gone now.

So what does that tell you? Did they have an agenda for 2017 that had nothing to do with all their shitty talking points?

You bet your ass they did.

They are not innocent zealots (i.e., Satoshi white paper adherers, big blockers, shitcoin lovers, or precious metal enthusiasts).

They are accounts associated with the whale traders, or paid shills, or both.

And when Bitcoin goes on a tear again, they will be back in droves (but likely with brand new account names).

This is good advice. At first I was amazed at the extraordinary effort they put into talking down Bitcoin. Where on earth do they get the energy to spend all-day, everyday talking about something they dislike so much? Don't have they have a job to go to? It only makes sense if they are paid.

Anyhow I didn't see this posted yet:

my 1st assembly language program was on a trs-80 model one.. it was pretty much this:

                            LOAD A, "E"
LOOP_OF_DEATH:  PUSH AF
                            GOTO LOOP_OF_DEATH

i did it to see how fast i could fill the screen with the letter "E" vs BASIC code (POKE x,y) as with BASIC you could see it fill as the loop executed.  with PUSH i figured the stack would grow till it filled all memory, including the memory mapped video screen. it did. not to mention overwriting itself eventually of course.

with the machine language code the screen was instantly filled and the machine locked up before i could even begin to take my finger off the RETURN key heh. i was impressed. helped me understand just how fast straight machine code was vs interpreted code.
I remember doing all most the exact same thing in HS but I think we figured out how to just fill the screen. It must have been from a magazine. Otherwise I’m not sure how we figured it out??? I was amazed at the speed..

I havent posted on here since 2015 when my account The Doxing, was banned from posting. Some may remember when I revealed the identity of Lambie, our friendly FT journalist, who was a plague on this thread for too long. She fought it at first but once I started subtly dripping her personal info she realized I was for real and left never too return. I never released any of her personal emails. She is gone and that is what is important. I have been reading this thread daily since 2013 and became a long term hodler in 2014. Ive even read most of JJGs posts although some speedreading and skimming is required. Im still hodling strong over half the coins i started with and happy to see Lambie doesnt plague these forums any more. The most recent dumpfest was more ridiculous imo than the Jan 2015 one so it felt like a good time to drop in and say hello after many years. Despite the rivers of blood, the carnage and the despair we have seen lately, at least NLC isnt flooding us with disgusting porn. Oh yeah and since I havent posted in so long, Ill think Ill call bottom while Im here, a little prediction never hurt anyone. I doubt Ill be back to post again for a long time but Ill be reading and enjoying everyones comments, even Roach who I believe is an undercover permabull of Jewish descent Wink

This thread has really come back to life with all the old-timers droppng by to say hello.

This is how FOMO thinking works and why so many people buy at the top. You will **not** miss out. Think of it this way - at any point in time there is a 50% chance the price will go up and 50% chance it will go down. If this were not true, the market would change the price to make it true.

So just buy some BTC when the money arrives and chill out.

Halving is the nature of Bitcoin, a metaphysical phenomenon that creates its essence and the manifestation of which cannot be found on the surface. Halving is manifested in the fact that bitcoin is growing for a long time. And in the spring you will not see anything special.
Masterluc (or google translate) is just trying to say it's priced in.

He's right - price-wise the actual halving day is a non-event.

You:  I don’t like the idea that I’m not in control of my life.

Satoshi: I know exactly what you mean! ...Let me tell you why you’re here - you're here because you know something. What you know, you can’t explain - but you feel it. You felt it your entire life. There’s something’s wrong with the world. You don’t know what, but it’s there. Like a splinter in your mind, driving you mad. It is this feeling that has brought you to me. ...Do you know what I’m talking about?

You: That gigantic systematic redistribution at the expense of self-determined life?

Satoshi: I'm done!

I read that corona viruses are stable and not prone to mutate, unlike the flu.

I don't believe so... they are highly recombinant.

"It is likely that these viruses will continue to emerge and to evolve and cause both human and veterinary outbreaks owing to their ability to recombine, mutate, and infect multiple species and cell types."

Estimating death rate... I think South Korea's numbers are most reliable, since they don't have authoritarian censorship culture, but they DO have LOTS of test kits available.

The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) said there were 64 new cases on Monday, taking the national tally to 8,961. The death toll rose by one to 110.

110 out of 8,961 is about 1.23%.
Wrong formula. It's death/(death+cured). Which still doesn't look bad, in their case.

Would you just stop it with your home made non sense bullshit formula already.
Ball is in your court. Suggest a better method.

 We're all doing it wrong.
 Population of Italy  ~ 60,480,000
 Deaths attributed to Covid-19  ~ 6,078
 Mortality rate ~ 1.12 per 100,000

Perhaps we could use a narrower geographic definition by drawing a circle of a certain diameter around with epicenter and estimating the population of that area but I don't have those stats but I'm sure the respective governments do.

Cause-specific mortality rate
The cause-specific mortality rate is the mortality rate from a specified cause for a population. The numerator is the number of deaths attributed to a specific cause. The denominator remains the size of the population at the midpoint of the time period. The fraction is usually expressed per 100,000 population. In the United States in 2003, a total of 108,256 deaths were attributed to accidents (unintentional injuries), yielding a cause-specific mortality rate of 37.2 per 100,000 population.
About 1% of the country is infected. They are all going to get infected. Mortality rate 112%!

No dude. We look at the infected population. It's over 40% by official numbers.

We know the official numbers are underestimating the actual number of infected. But then, they are probably underestimating the number of dead too. Gotta work with what we got.

We will never know the value of "the infected people" because they aren't testing the entire population.  How can we use this variable so loosely?  It doesn't reflect the reality of the situation and makes it seem more grave than it is.

A random sample is all you need to extrapolate the number of people who have the virus in a population. You don't actually need to test everybody...
