If only the Average Joes of the world would realize the truth about the inflation they experienced in the past, as well as the heightened level of inflation they will begin to experience in the coming decade, they'd do well to put savings into bitcoin just for that very reason: just to hedge against inflation and protect their purchasing power. I must confess something...

When I discovered Bitcoin about 2 years ago it blew my mind. I'm a scientist/engineer and my job is to design things, so I immediately understood the idea and its implications. Much like Andreas Antonopoulos's experience, I found myself skipping meals and forgetting to sleep while reading all a could find about it. I thought that this invention had the power and potential to change the world for the better. To help people. And I still believe that.

But something spoiled the dream for me. Greed. I was lucky enough to buy a good amount of BTC when they were worth 200 € each. I didn't plan it, it was pure luck. And then I found myself thinking about how much money I could earn, when I should sell my BTC and become rich (in a fiat setting), etc. I didn't care about Bitcoin "the world-changing invention" anymore, all I ended up caring was how much money I could make out of it.

Things are looking up, and my goal may be realised sooner that I thought, but is this a healthy goal? Are we all supporting or destroying Bitcoin by thinking like this? I see this greed in many people's posts here in the forum. It saddens me. Many here talk pompously and boasting how they're going to sell their stash when its fiat-based value reaches a set target. Is this all you see in Bitcoin? A money-making machine? Are we all failing to see the bigger picture?

As someone who bought their first Bitcoin in 2012 for $20,

Indeed, I can't help but laugh at all the thousands of newcomers who just read r/bitcoin and suddenly think they are scaling experts. That Bitcoin should be able to run a node on every Raspberry Pi in Afghanistan. Yada yada yada. This is psychologically manipulated groupthink. Let's face it - many of the people getting into Bitcoin today are "newbies" who weren't very smart or educated in the first place. But they all like to act like they are, ESPECIALLY when it comes to their opinions on the Blocksize debate - an opinion that was only formed through reddit. Oh boy do they love repeating those opinions, and screaming down anyone who disagrees, like a bunch of drunken fratboys who think they are about to lose their virginity. Only a very small minority are capable of using logic or reason.

It's both amusing and kind of sickening to watch happen.

Anyway, now that the dust has settled and the "1mb forever" crowd has won, Legacy Bitcoin will likely never scale in any meaningful kind of way - Meaning Legacy BTC will never be anything more than a speculator's toy to get rich, a gateway to altcoins and FIAT and a settlement layer.

However, I still fully expect the combined speculator and institutional investor money to take Legacy Bitcoin to 50 - 100K and beyond. However, it will become impossible to move coin at some point on the main chain , with $100+ fees, making a very large percentage of BTC wallets unspendable. At that point, the vast majority of Crypto users and commerce will have already moved to either Bitcoin Cash, Monero or Ethereum. In the long long run, 5+ years, I fully expect either Bitcoin Cash, Monero or Ethereum to become the #1 coin with the highest market cap. It's inevitable now that Bitcoin will never scale - and let's be honest, Lightning Network will either never exist or will never deliver as promised --- which means BTC is going to be stuck where it is now from the scaling perspective, with only a few band-aids thrown on top, likely forever -- unless the miners finally grow a pair, say enough is enough and stand up to the bought out Corporate shills at Blockstream, but I'm not holding out hope for that outcome at all.

I would like to clarify my position regarding Mark Karpeles lest my last post be taken out of context.  While he does look eminently  punchable on that particular pic, I actually bear him no ill will.  It is my belief that Mark was simply in over his head, that when he got robbed he tried to find a workaround with the willy bot but events caught up with him.

My personal story is that I was able to get the lion's share of my modest holdings off of GOX without issue well after the alarm bells were sounding.  I believe that he set some sort of algorithm or threshold that locked large accounts near the end, while allowing smaller fish to escape, and for this noble act I applaud him.

I still think he was a dumbass who was in over his head, but I do not believe he ever meant to harm anyone.

The good thing for Bitcoin is that the recent rise appears to have low correlation with any movements in BCH. This means that the recent rise does not come from BCH holders playing the markets and moving their coins back and forth, but possibly from genuine, new investors intending to keep their coins and support BTC, especially now that there are no forks on the horizon to cause uncertainty.

Could this mean that we are heading for some stability and a rise to a new ATH and beyond? I hope so.

Even if we are correcting, the money seems to be flowing out of Bitcoin and into Bitcoin Cash. The original Bitcoin holders ate not losing much. But if you took a punt and dumped your Bitcoin cash, then you are exposed to more volatility.

This is my first post to this forum. I have been following this thread for a couple of month and found the discussions to be the most informed I've come across by quite some way.

I have a very modest bitcoin holding. Just less and 1 BTC. So i can't speak about Lambo's or sea front houses on the California Coast. However i can speak with the hope that one day i will be able to pay off my mortgage early. So i hope that my modest investment will become a life changing one in the future.

Anyway, i thought i'd post this chart which i'm sure many of you have seen before but what i found interesting was the date this chart predicts that 1 BTC would be worth 10k USD. "22-11-17". I can only hope this chart plays out to 2024. Cos if it does then i can pay off my mortgage and still have enough left over to book a holiday to the California coast. Who knows! I have read Bitfinexed’s critique of the Friedman audit of Bitfinex. It’s pretty clear that Bitfinexed has no experience of interpreting audit reports and is going at completely the wrong issues.

That said, Bitfinex has done a piss poor job of managing the issue.  It should publish monthly transparency reports at the least, and those reports should be signed off by Friedman.  So it only has itself to blame.  And attempting to sue people rather than improve its reporting practices is a bad sign.

It wasn't my intention to spread FUD. Rather to make people aware of the manipulation they're about to be exposed to. The only way to combat it is to decouple the behaviour of the cash and futures markets as much as possible.

The only way to do that if for people to *want* to hold bitcoin the asset as opposed to bitcoin the derivative or USD cash. That means they'll need to resist the tendency to value BTC in terms of fiat currencies and instead value it for its utility, store of value and future-proofing qualities.

I'm not a computer scientist kind of guy and I don't like maths. My strengths lies in other areas of specialization.
I have always tried to do and study things I like, rather then pursuing a traditional career and that have lead me on to many interesting paths, crypto being one of them.

However, when I get a bank card I don't give a rat's ass how it actually works, and the bank doesn't tell me either. They just tell me how to use it. The same goes for just about everything else i buy, the TV salesman doesn't tell me how the TV works, just how to use it et cetera.
But when it comes to crypto it's always the other way around, every thread and info page talks ad nauseam about how it works, and very little about how to use it.
I for example no nothing at all about how to use segwit, and yet segwit have been talked about for ages. And I consider myself fairly intelligent. Just imagine then, when average Joe comes to bitcoin and is told to use segwit to lower fees. That won't tell him anything.
Why can't core make a information page that tells you how to use it? And make sure that page is seen among the noobs, and for that matter oldies like me without a degree in computer science. Why do they and everybody else have to talk non stop about incomprehensible technicalities?
I don't give a fuck about the underlying technology, I want to know how to use it.

And by the way, can you make a segwit paper wallet? And if so how?
That is one of the things that core should tell people if they want adoption.

A few observations about the graphic.

The picture of the network is highly distorted, showing only 3 end users! when really theres hundred of thousands or millions potentially. HIghly connected hubs will be numbered in the hundreds (I feel I'm being generous with that number). That is a highly centralised network, nothing like the depiction.

I doubt many people use a hot wallet for everyday spending. The use case in which people have a spending wallet is already defunct. Who spends bitcoin when the fees are more than the cost of the purchase, you don't spend it.

The promise of low fees on LN was also made onchain in the early days. When I first used bitcoin most people didnt even put a fee. I suspect fees will not be low on LN, only lower than onchain fees.

the chain is constantly forking which is a huge problem. The forks are caused by a flaw in the SetBestChain logic. PoS blocks of a lower height (aka. blocks that should be less trustworthy and rejected) are being accepted as valid and erasing valid PoW, PoS, and transactions. The net effect is that work is being lost / wasted while older PoS account are benefiting from a reduced coin supply and the ability to wipe out, in some cases, hours or work by other miners. Worse, transactions are being lost into the void. If you scan the block chain manually you can find plenty of transactions that were sent on one chain, then overwritten, and are currently sitting in the chain with 0 confirms despite being valid transactions because they were eaten on a fork. I've seen some for well over a million PAC get lost to the void -- which is a MASSIVE problem.

A heads up on the airdrop situation. You can now sell a bunch of these fork directly through the latest Bitpie wallet on Android (must download the .apk).

You have to first move the coins to the "Pie Bank". Once they've received enough confirmations (schedule here) they'll be available on the exchange. To access said exchange, you have to select your coin from the main screen then tap the button along the bottom that looks like the refresh or recycling symbol. The orderbook takes a minute to load. No.  You take BTC as "the one true bitcoin."  As for me, I say that I don't know.  Maybe BTC will remain dominant; but maybe BCH with its greater block size limit will overtake it.  Or maybe a new branch will prevail.  It doesn't matter to me because Bitcoin is the sum of its forks and I hold them all.

I just discovered a better way right now. You use two apps, Bither and Bitpie. In Bither you go to "import private key", write it there, then click on "get fork coins", select the coin you want, the private key, and then it will ask for a Bitpie address to send them. In Bitpie you create a new address, and the forks will already be there, just click on "receive" for each fork (each have a different color), and it will give you an address, then sent the coins from Bither there.

Now the question is where to sell these altcoins for bitcoins. SBTC and BCD have few exchanges, but they are closed for deposits right now.

my 1st assembly language program was on a trs-80 model one.. it was pretty much this:

i did it to see how fast i could fill the screen with the letter "E" vs BASIC code (POKE x,y) as with BASIC you could see it fill as the loop executed.  with PUSH i figured the stack would grow till it filled all memory, including the memory mapped video screen. it did. not to mention overwriting itself eventually of course.

with the machine language code the screen was instantly filled and the machine locked up before i could even begin to take my finger off the RETURN key heh. i was impressed. helped me understand just how fast straight machine code was vs interpreted code.

She is gone and that is what is important. I have been reading this thread daily since 2013 and became a long term hodler in 2014. Ive even read most of JJGs posts although some speedreading and skimming is required. Im still hodling strong over half the coins i started with and happy to see Lambie doesnt plague these forums any more. The most recent dumpfest was more ridiculous imo than the Jan 2015 one so it felt like a good time to drop in and say hello after many years. Despite the rivers of blood, the carnage and the despair we have seen lately, at least NLC isnt flooding us with disgusting porn. Oh yeah and since I havent posted in so long, Ill think Ill call bottom while Im here, a little prediction never hurt anyone. I doubt Ill be back to post again for a long time but Ill be reading and enjoying everyones comments, even Roach who I believe is an undercover permabull of Jewish descent

Most people in my environment are dumb, they call BTC a hoax. My brother in law wanted to invest in Bitcoin when it was around $350, and his father talked him out of it, into some kind of fund-based asset (i don't know the english term for this). He called his father an idiot in 2017, of course, but the latter still thinks he was right. This is the second "nearly"-coiner i knew to date. The other one had Bitcoins, but only for Silkroad and the likes. He never held them longer than for some weeks.
When you even talk about Bitcoin here, you are suspect to criminal activity, money laundering or you are seen as a moron who wants to lose all his money. They think it's child play, regardless what the facts are, they always know better. This is normality where i live, i am the megageek. I'm skateboarding at age 40+, i'm living on passive income, so i got that "strange freak that does not go to work" image and most people are intimidated by my presence, excluding very few, close friends and family members.
My mother and my wife are the only persons that know that i got the corn. The average IQ in my neighborhood can't be much more than a weak 90 at max.

Ironically the payment is already a week late and I wound't doubt entering at 8-8.5k. I new that if there was going to be a delay, that days would go up. So will have 10% less btc thanks to the incompetence of someone. Fells much worse than being because of your own decisions.
