The link to the explanation is broken. Chart buddy shows a 3D view of market depth at bitstamp over the past hour. It's just a series of lines drawn minute by minute showing the order book changing over time.

Yeah, agreed - no idea why they kept 19K in a hot wallet.

What follows is a Bitstamp Hot Wallet from taint analysis

This is guesstimated, from blockchain analysis only, so take it with a shovel of salt and a critical eye.
It's at best an under-estimation, as the taint will naturally not affect all change addresses and other things, though from experience on altcoins, it's not usually complete bollocks either

So apparently something happened on the 4th, either big external deposit(s) followed by larger withdrawal(s), or something that triggered a refill from a cold storage.

The hot wallet was then promptly cleared, with the high fee transactions that have been reported, though it's anyone's guess at this point if it was Bitstamp clearing it in panic mode, or a thief.

And below is recent guesstimated hot wallet history, the big bumps are (AFAICT) deposits from the large cold storage they created during their audit, so they're very likely artifacts more than real deposits. Those deposits were eventually compensated by withdrawals to likely cold storage addresses.

It shows Bitstamp aimed to keep between 500 and 2000 BTC in their hot wallet, so the hack occurring just after or during a "bump" to 20k BTC is suspicious.

“You believed him to be the mastermind behind Silk Road, keeping it secure and operating?” Ulbricht defense attorney Dratel asked Der-Yeghiayan.
“I did,” Der-Yeghiayan testified.
As the argument was unveiled, Ulbricht let out a rare beaming smile and turned to his parents. They nodded at one another, marking the most electric moment in the trial so far.
Der-Yeghiayan testified that his own investigation had found that Mutum Sigilum, a Karpeles holding company, had registered silkroadmarket.org as a means to publicize the site further.
The Homeland Security agent’s theory was that Karpeles, as owner of Mt. Gox, held an enormous amount of Bitcoin. He used Silk Road to leverage that price and raise it, which it did by several hundred times over during the course of Silk Road’s lifespan. Bitcoin was worth around $2 at Silk Road's launch and hit as high as $290 by 2013.
In the summer of 2013, a separate Baltimore-based Homeland Security investigation into Karpeles went to meet with the Karpeles's lawyers, explicitly against Der-Yeghiayan’s wishes. At this meeting, Karpeles’s lawyers brought up Silk Road and said that Karpeles was willing to give up the person he thought to be running Silk Road in order to gain immunity from other charges pending against him.
Der-Yeghiayan said he was “upset” about the contact and says he wrote a lengthy memo about the problems in the investigation.
Dratel says that it was only after this happened that Ulbricht was lured back into Silk Road, an entity he allegedly left behind two years prior, in order to be the “fall guy” who would ultimately take the charges that could leave him in prison for life.

I do see that if they SUSPECT that you are using coinbase to buy/sell in a high volume outside of personal use ( kinda like a business ) they will limit your account, which is fair for they went and jump though hoops to get where they are at right now, plus it also limits the liability that they might have due to the idiots that want to do illegal activities with bitcoin.

Seems like traders feel that bitcoins are under-priced and are therefore accumulating every bitcoin thrown at them. Demand seems to be exceeding current supplies, therefore a price increase seems likely in order to entice some people to sell their bitcoins.

That just means that you have lower deposit and withdrawal limits, but if you're only moving BTC in and out it's probably enough for most people here: 1000 BTC per day for level 1.

Why wouldn't you just select "English" as language on the website

Right now I don't have funds there, and I'm not from the US, but Level 2 verification is only if you need to withdraw USD. To move funds in and out of OKCoin using BTC you only need level 1 verification, which is just telling them your ID number. With level 1 verification you can trade all you want.


It's like bitfinex, to trade you only need to open an account, no verification required.

I'm a little nervous for this Steve fellow. Dude seems totally newby at trading and it's like watching someone waltz up to a roulette table for the first time w/ their life's savings. If the FED's issuing warnings about Bitcoin it doesn't stimulate much faith in an ETF approval. On the other hand they must be aware that an approval's going to pump the price. Having better luck than me it seems.
