When people buy something they are not looking at market cap, they say hey ETH is $300 and bitcoin is $3000, I am buying ETH because it is going to be worth $3000 soon. I don't think there is a very reliable way to predict it, and history doesn't always repeat itself. However Elwar says that in 2013 the price doubling in a week, or half a week was what preceded a crash.

What kind of fool would do that?  Silver is at cost of production or even below it for some miners.  Silver is a far better buy than BTC.  Next metals bull run will probably be gold $3000-3200, silver $90-120.  If there's some type of big economic event or lots of printing, gold $5000-ish, silver $166-$200.  If they're forced to revalue gold entirely in one act, gold will be set to $10-20k and silver will be astronomical.

If an exchange is missing some minor figure like 10-30% it will remain mostly undetected.

If you only have a minimum amount of BTC on exchanges IN RELATION to you total holdings, then it is somewhat ok, especially if you plan to trade the volatility.

Bitcoin Cash (BCH) Token Distribution
July 27, 2017

A minority of Bitcoin miners will be forking on August 1st, 2017 to create a new chain called Bitcoin Cash. The fork does not impact Bitcoin balances, but it creates a new token. At the time of the fork, all Bitcoin addresses holding a balance will automatically have equivalent balances in Bitcoin Cash.

There has been a variety of responses by the community about how to handle this new token. After a significant show of interest from our customers, we have decided to take steps to facilitate the distribution of Bitcoin Cash balances to those holding a settled Bitcoin balance on Bitfinex. We may also list markets for this new token, but that decision will be made after the fork event.

Although we see this token referred to as BCC on other platforms, unfortunately, that ticker symbol is already in use on our platform by the chain-split token representing Bitcoin Core. As such, we plan to use BCH as the ticker symbol and “Bcash” as the descriptive name to avoid confusion with Bitcoin.

Although several months ago, we developed a methodology for handling contentious hardforks, we will be applying a different methodology for what we regard as a spurious forking of the Bitcoin project with little mining support. Although we have not supported such Bitcoin UTXO-based distributions in the past (Stellar Lumens, Clams, etc.), we will support the distribution of Bitcoin Cash due to significant customer interest.

Distribution Policy

BCH will be distributed to settled bitcoin wallet balances as of the UTC timestamp of the first forking block, which is expected to occur on August 1st, 2017.

The token distribution methodology will be:

    All BTC wallet balances will receive BCH
    Margin longs in BTC/USD and margin shorts in XXX/BTC will not receive BCH
    Margin shorts in BTC/USD and margin longs in XXX/BTC will not pay BCH
    BTC Lenders will receive BCH

Due to the net amount of BTC committed in margin positions at the time of the fork, the above methodology may result in Bitfinex seeing a surplus or deficit of BCH. As such, we will be resolving this discrepancy in the form of a socialized distribution coefficient. For example, currently, there are more longs than shorts on the platform, causing a distribution coefficient of ~1.091 (Meaning that for each qualifying BTC a user will receive 1.091 BCH). The actual coefficient will be calculated at the moment of the distribution. Please note that if there are more shorts than longs at the fork event, this coefficient will be less than one. This coefficient can be roughly computed from publicly available information from our API (longs & shorts) and the Blockchain (cold storage).

We recognize that this model is not perfect, but given the short time frames imposed upon us, better choices are not available. It would be an undue burden to create negative BCH balances for BTC/USD shorts and XXX/BTC longs. Furthermore, lenders may be locked in for up to 30 days and would be adversely impacted. In the end, we believe that this solution creates the least amount of disruption and facilitates a timely distribution of BCH.

Margin longs who wish to receive BCH should consider either claiming some or all of their position or exchanging and holding BTC collateral in their margin wallet as opposed to other assets. We hope to make withdrawals available soon after the fork, assuming everything is fine with the BCH blockchain.

Once again we want to reassure our customers that your bitcoin is safe and this event will not affect your bitcoin balances, positions, or loans - you will simply be receiving an additional token balance based upon the aforementioned methodology.

I only left there a fraction of a BTC that I wouldn't care to withdraw so I decided to lend it. 11 days later I have had a ROI of more than 20% (2% daily). The lend is for 60 days, but the borrower could cancel any time.

Why would someone do that? If he keeps the lend until the end of the period I will make 120% on it. What is that, someone marging shorting BTC until he gets liquidated? (if not for the price increase for the huge lending interest).

Unfortunately it was a very small amount but... still... Anyone still having some active lends at crazy rates for a significant amount of BTC?

I think that we have about 24 hours before this week's candle closes, and I think that it has to close above $4550 in order for the candle to be green.  Something like that.

So way back in 2013, I devised a little unscientific theory as a way to measure the growth of Bitcoin and thus it's supported price floor.

I didn't have an accurate way to measure the exact number of participants and accounts across the world, so I just used Coinbase as a reference.

I surmised that for each 5X multiple in number of accounts, the price would be supported at around a 10X from the last price floor.

In 2015, Coinbase had around 2M accounts, and the price floor was found ~$250/btc.

Now they have approximately 10M accounts, and the price floor probably sits around $2500/btc (a rough guess).

So to extrapolate, in order to reach a support of $25k/btc, Coinbase would need to hit around 50M accounts.

Can we do it in the next 2-3 years?  I think it's possible. In 4-5 years I think it's a lock.

Agree 100%.  Like I said 1000x times before, the bitcoin price has mostly been controlld by a SINGLE ENTITY on Bitfinex ever since it was $200.  If a market is almost entirely controlled by one person, it's not a market, it's a fucking scam.  There is obviously very shady shit going on at Finex ever since they stole all those bitcoins during the halving then claimed they were "hacked".

I do find it a bit strange that you, as a member here since mid 2011, do not HODL more BTC, and also that you would be planning to increase your BTC holdings by 3x, in the event of another approximately 40% BTC price drop.  It is likely you are in a BTC accumulation stage rather than in a BTC maintenance stage, in spite of your years of membership on this forum.

Just for illustrative purposes, I will disclose that I have several times more BTC than you, and I am not trying to brag, but just stating a fact based on your representations.

And let me assert that surely, I am much more wealthy overall if BTC prices are up rather than down, but sounds like you and I have a similar BTC buy on the way down strategy, yet it seems that I play with much less extremes than you (likely because I am in a kind of maintenance stage and you are either in an accumulation stage or a BTC gambling stage).   

Even though both of us are buying BTC as prices go down, my accumulation of BTC in terms of the percentage of my whole BTC holdings remains way smaller than yours, and if BTC prices were to go down another 40% from here, to approximately $6k, my current preset BTC buying plan would only trigger that I buy about 4% more BTC into my overall BTC holdings.   

Seems like my street cred as largely a BTC HOLDer is bolstered by such a fact that I am not playing around with a very large percentage of my BTC holdings, even though I could possibly profit a bit more from a bit more aggressive BTC selling strategy that would thereafter result in me buying more BTC on the way down, but it seems that I am too chicken shit and conservative to take such a more aggressive approach, because I feel that overall I would probably end up getting screwed out of more BTC, if I were to take such a more aggressive approach that results in playing around with a larger percentage of my overall BTC holdings.   

I have no doubt, but I'm on a schedule. I've made peace parting with 20-30% of my Bitcorn reserves to fund my retirement, within the next 30 days.

Yes, that's the hilarious part.  The last time there was a Bitfinex scare and everyone KNEW they were a fraud, Bitfinex DOUBLED DOWN on fraud.  They knew everyone would convert everything to BTC to try and withdraw, so what do they do?  They pumped BTC on their own exchange right beforehand to make sure everyone is forced to buy the bitcoins at TOP DOLLAR HAHA.  That's how big of crooks everyone affiliated with that exchange is.

Personally I don't see much of a difference between tethers and "real" dollars displayed on an exchange after you sell btc or a shitcoin. I mean they are both virtual until you get the money on your hand. Many insolvent exchanges showed dollar balances that weren't reflecting the reality of the USD holdings of the exchange, whether it was MtGox or more recent ones.

So no matter if it says "USD balance" / "EUR balance" / "CNY balance", "USDT balance" or even "BTC balance", it always has a risk when you are dealing with an exchange.

It's pretty interesting in that you can see the amount of trades daily. US dollar trades are around 15 per day.

I went ahead and set up a sell order in baht for my gf to test it out in Thailand. Set it at 10% though so no bites.
