That is not the trendline that people were posting until six months ago.  It has been modified to make it look like the current price is still within the historic channel, when in fact is has strayed below it.

Even if the price were to fall to 300$ for the next six months, we can be sure that someone would redraw the channel to say that bitcoin is "undervalued", rather than stopped following the exponential trend.

All indicators start to say "BUY" right now.

There are several hypothetical attacks that could be called "spam attacks".

One type (1) is what we have seen since July this year: issue hundreds of MB of cheap transactions, to fill the queues and maybe crash the relay nodes (and generally cause trouble for software that deals with the queues.  That attack does not affeact transactions that pay fees higher than the attacker pays.  It will delay zero- and low-fee transactions.  The delay depends on the clearance C - T between the average capacity C of the network (currently ~0.80 MB/block) and the average non-spam incoming traffic T (currently ~0.45 MB/block).  Currently, with less than 50'000 USD anyone can launch an attack that clog the queues and delay low-fee transactions for 2-3 weeks or more.

Another type (2), that we have not seen yet, tries to delay some of the high-paying fee too.  To hold up 50% of the legitimate traffic, for example, an attacker of this type would keep issuing transactions with suitable fees to ensure that the top 0.80 MB of the queue always included at least 0.58 MB of his own transactions.  That is, he would have to issue C - T/2 transactions per block, with enough fees to keep the low half of the legitimate traffic perpetually out of the next block.  I don't know how much this attack would cost per hour; but I guess that an attacker with 50'000 USD budget would be able to keep it up for at least half a day.  

Yet another type (3) of attack may be a miner creating and solving a large bock to cause relay nodes and some clients to crash.   Rumor is that the 1 MB limit was introduced to prevent hypothetical type (3) attacks, or some similar one.    But there was no such attack during the 20 months or so in 2009 and 2010 that bitcoin operated with a 32 MB block size limit; and it is not clear whether such a rogue miner could do much damage except to himself.

On the other hand, presently it is the 1 MB limit that makes attacks of type (2) viable, and causes type (1) attacks to delay low-fee transactions by weeks.  

If the block size limit were to be raised to 8 MB, the effective capacity C would rise from 0.80 MB/block to maybe 6.00 MB/block .  The clearance C - T would then increase from 0.35 to 5.65 MB/block.  That would speed up the recovery after type (1) attacks some 15-fold, so a backlog that now takes 2 weeks to clear (like the one that exists now) would be cleared in 1 day.

If the block size limit were to be raised to 8 MB, a type (2) attacker who wanted to hold up 50% of the legitimate traffic would have to issue 5.77 MB of transactions per block, instead of 0.58 MB/block; but he would need to pay the same fees in order to keep the half of the traffic out.  Therefore the cost to the attacker, per hour, would be ~10 times larger.

Far from being an argument against a block size increase, spam attacks are one of the strongest reasons why the increase should be a no-brainer.  In fact, deterrence of and resilience against spam attacks demand a large increase rather than a small one.

Yeah, unfortunately this is the case... people in this thread have always been thinking in an "all or nothing" approach... but that's the fun of speculating, you never know what's going to be the outcome at anytime.  Once people see the prices go down a dollar, they are instantaneously ready to sell all of their bitcoins, and ready to watch the bitcoin world burn to the ground.

At some point old pubkey coins might be easily hackable. At that point, millions of BTC can be looted for the lolz by those having the tech to do it. The question is what can you do about it so that they can be moved to safety, locked, etc. Otherwise you'll have millions of BTC looted AND a PR fiasco like "ohhh Bitcoin got HACKED AND PEOPLE LOST THEIR MONEY!!! ITS UNSAFE, RUN FOR YOUR LIVES". So you have hackers dumping, people panicking, etc etc. It's a complex issue.

No, the early coins (not just Satoshis - all of the coins) use an obsolete scheme that hasn't been used in years. Essentially they don't have addresses, like now, but naked/exposed public keys.

Quantum computers can reverse a public key as long as they know it. Our modern addresses use hashes so you first have to reverse the hash, find the pubkey and then break the pubkey/privkey to access the funds. This is way more quantum-proof, as long as you don't reuse addresses (and thus expose your pubkey for long periods of time).

Believe it or not my dear brother, I've a STRONG FEELING that we will have ETF approval.

The ETF date is the most interesting part about bitcoin at the moment.  As a regulator you would have to be insane to approve a bitcoin ETF in current state, so if it did get approved it would probably be the government trying to create some alternative target for people to waste their time in and keep them out of the metals markets.  When the current scam system starts to implode, gold will go to at least $20,000 an ounce in current buying power and silver will see even higher percentage gains.  The sooner people figure this out, the faster it does implode - which is why they don't want people creating bull runs in those markets and want to distract people with other things instead.

Someone is going to get all upset that I implied bitcoin is somehow not as good as metals, but by that I just mean that it's very likely metals will have a currency roll again or that the world reserve currency will be metals, while it's very unlikely a nation state or the world reserve currency would be bitcoin.  In fact, it would be a disaster since bitcoin isn't fungible with every transaction traced with white and black lists making it a permissioned ledger in that aspect.  Until/if that issue is resolved, nobody should be wishing for the government or wall street to have any affiliation with bitcoin whatsoever when the odds of it turning into some 1984 scheme are far higher than not.

We already broke the Bitstamp and Bitfinex ATHs once. If we can break the gox ATH it will be all over the mainstream news. Bitcoin reaching the highest its ever been is good headline material.

Two years ago I was pissed when it went below $250, now I'm pissed when it goes below $1000. In another two years I'm hoping to get pissed when it goes below $10000 after a rally to $30000 or more.

The LTC price has been about $4 for about 4 years now with only minor fluctuations now and then. They are probably more stable compared to the dollar than most currencies in the world yet the naysayers would probably make up some other excuse as to why nobody should use it (like how people say Bitcoin can never be used because the price fluctuates too much...yet bitcoin is used much more than litecoin).

Mempool single thread bottleneck has little to do with number of transactions/sec, when one can put as much transactions within the block limit. Although segwit almost doubles that amount, blocks are already full, particularity in the time of spam attacks that your BCH friends impose on the blockchain. That is probably the reason this was not addressed before by core devs, and why other people detected it when they increased the block size by two orders of magnitude in their crazy experiments towards 1GB blocks, in which case it did became a bottleneck. What mempool multi-threading can help is handling spam transactions much more effectively, leaving mempool in much better state. If you understand all this (and I'm not sure you do, so you should be given the benefit of the doubt that you are simply ignorant), then your statements about core team where "nobody understands concurrency" are nothing but the FUD you spread about them in order to picture your big block developers somehow "superior". We saw their coding skills few days ago when they failed to execute a proper fork. What's funny that you said few posts above that you don't want to hurt BTC in any possible way, and few posts latter you talk this nonsense about core devs. You can't lie and at the same time cry you only want the truth, inconsistency is killing you.

Since HMRC advice is so sketchy (it goes back to a vague 2014 reference effectively saying 'we will treat it all on a case-by-case basis') we are in the dark.

I only cash out in BTC and only (originally) went in via BTC so, I am asking my accountant to simply list all fiat 'in' events and fiat 'out' events and hoping it will be just CGT.  But be aware they can see it as 'badge of trade' and charge as though it was income if they think you're a trader.

I am hoping if I cough up CGT and list only Bitcoin bought and sold and just pay up, they will accept it.

If not, I will find others here in the same position and suggest we club together to get a QC to fight HMRC - as paying 45% income tax will be too much to let pass.

I know you and I have different 'cryptos of choice' but we may end up in the same expensive boat, under the same threat of a massive tax bill.

Odds on they will just take the CGT, but if not...  Let's consider a fight - I think we can probably both afford to chip in for a legal case with others, which they won't have the staff or competence to want to bother with.

yes, it never seems to end. We are near the old resistance level of the previous symmetrical triangle (and downtrend) though, so a bounce off this level would be bullish. Of course if it doesn't bounce that would be very bearish, and mean that the previous break was just a false breakout.

The point I was making was that when an entire asset sector has a single entity like Tether in its midst that's capable of bidding up the market at will with limitless supply, that is a toxic situation. That isn't the case with "pure crypto" assets like BitUSD. Their supply is not created arbitrarily out of thin air and is always market backed which is why you occasionally get those spikes you're pointing out.

The reason is stays on its peg is that when it spiked down like that there is a huge market gain to be made for traders taking the long side in order to restore the peg (which is exactly what has happened since that dump occurred. See current price):

I'm thinking of planning out my own home/property that is entirely self-sustained for everything relevant.

Salmon pond/lake, perhaps shrimps if you can raise them "at home" somehow to feed the salmon (and myself). Have the water somehow create a cycle that cools the Bitcorn farm that is powered by state of the art solar panels with the excess heat warming a greenhouse with herbs and "herbs" all of which get watered by the lake-water cycle. Perhaps have some animals dicking around for eggs and meat (especially if private labs become a possibility). Then the obvious spa/pool/sauna, a gym, a home arcade, theatre, music room, a racing track(?) and other frivolous luxuries that are available and viable. Turns out private live-in chefs are relatively cheap too at 20 to 40k a year. And then just occasionally leave the property for travel.

On a related note, there do seem to be quite a few inconsistencies in the new system (adding in merit as one of the requirements to rank up), so in that regard, it remains interesting (and perhaps a gossip point) to watch how theymos might be tweaking they system more in the future.

To me, it does seem that a better system would include to vastly increase the number of merit sources (and maybe have a kind of algorithm that would cause a vastly higher number of merit sources - with human oversight too) in order that maybe thousands of members become merit sources rather than our current low number of merit sources (which is currently at 79), but what do I know? just quasi-random ideas on the topic that were triggered by you, V8...
