How is that working out? 

I think that as a community we should start demanding these services continually prove that they are not fractional reserve. We cannot effectively eliminate the need for trust in these sorts of services, but we can certainly confine the exposure and eliminate a lot of this drama. With Bitcoin it's technically possible to prove an entity controls enough coin to cover its obligations— and even to do so in ways that don't leak other business information, and so we should. But this isn't something specific about MTGox, it's something we should demand from all services holding large amounts of third party Bitcoins. I wouldn't even suggest MTGox should do it first, rather— it sounds like a great move for their competition to differentiate themselves.

I just want Gox to be removed out of the bitcointalk dictionary.

On Tuesday, and for the rest of the week, all hell will break lose in the media. It will be blamed on MtGox, it will be blamed on Bitcoin, it will be blamed on the "bug," and it will, more than anything, be blamed on the "lack of regulation." Pundits and "experts" of all types will weigh in on the calamity. It will be world news in a matter of hours.
Get ready, because it will be an ugly week.
For all of you who lost money, my heart goes out to you. Some people lost a little, some lost a fortune. It will make people sick, and depressed, and full of grief. Personally, I had over 550 BTC in Gox. I will never get any of that back. If misery loves company, then we'll be enjoying a grand feast today.
I should have known better, of course. I take responsibility for leaving those funds with an entity that had proven incompetence repeatedly. I chose to ignore even my own warnings, for nothing more than the sake of convenience.
Gox is still at fault, to be sure, but I have learned the lesson. I hope it is not such an expensive lesson for others. And for all you observers, please take a moment to consider it as well.
Be mindful, however, that the wrong lessons are not learned, for that would be the true tragedy, indeed.
Let me suggest that the lesson is not that Bitcoin is broken. Bitcoin is fine.
Similarly, the lesson is not that security is impossible. Those who know what they are doing, can achieve it and help others to do so.
The lesson is not that nobody can be trusted. There are countless good men and women in this community who are worthy of trust, and some of the very best people I've ever met.
And finally, the lesson is not that we ought to seek out "regulation" to save us from the evils and incompetence of man. For the regulators are men too, and wield the very same evil and incompetence, only enshrined in an authority from which it can wreck amplified and far more insidious destruction. Let us not retreat from our rising platform only to cower back underneath the deranged machinations of Leviathan.
The proper lesson, if I may suggest, is this: We are building a new financial order, and those of us building it, investing in it, and growing it, will pay the price of bringing it to the world. This is the harsh truth. We are building the channels, the bridges, and the towers of tomorrow's finance, and we put ourselves at risk in doing so.
We are at risk from accidents. We are at risk from fraud, from corruption, and from evil. We are at risk from journalists seeking headlines and from politicians seeking power and glory. We are at risk from the very market we are trying to build - a market which cares not about our portfolio, our ambitions, or our delicate sympathies.

Last night, we were shocked to find out about Mt. Gox’s insolvency, as they appear to have committed a grievous breach of trust against their customers.

The Blockchain staff will continue to collaborate with other industry leaders to establish better controls to ensure that events like this are not repeated. We are hopeful that together we can create a more trustworthy industry for the benefit of all existing and future Bitcoin holders.

BTW I am still not buying the whole Gox situation, it is hard to lose 10K bitcoin and even harder to lose 50K Bitcoin without noticing but losing all the just cant be sold to the public, something really big is happening, and I would say for long time now, this didn't happen in just few weeks.

I am really waiting to see the real story behind all of this.

U.S. firms are pushing ahead with plans to open bitcoin exchanges catering to professional traders, after the closing of a Tokyo-based exchange sent shock waves through the virtual-currency world.

Perseus Telecom, a provider of high-speed telecommunications lines for securities exchanges and trading firms, is joining forces with bitcoin-trading platform Atlas ATS and Strevus Inc., which produces compliance-management tools for financial institutions and other firms, to build one or more U.S.-based digital-currency exchanges in the U.S. and elsewhere.

The push is being driven by strong demand for bitcoin-trading capabilities from Perseus's clients in the high-frequency trading industry, said Perseus Chief Executive Jock Percy.

The firm has created a separate digital-currency unit and already has received $2 million in revenue commitments, the company said. High-frequency trading firms use computers to dart in and out of markets within milliseconds to profit from minuscule pricing advantages.

The meltdown of the Mt. Gox exchange shows that "we have to put in place the right level of institutional controls and mechanisms that we're used to in the world of banking," Mr. Percy said. "That way we can build trust. [A currency] has to have trust."

The sudden closing of Mt. Gox, which once claimed to account for 80% of bitcoin trading volume, underscored the technological and regulatory risks of the five-year-old digital currency. After freezing customer withdrawals on Feb. 6 and suffering a hacking attack, Mt. Gox said it was working on a fix to restore operations. It appeared to shut down completely Tuesday when its website went dark and investors were left with little recourse to retrieve their frozen funds.

Bitcoin is a virtual, computer-driven currency that is created, or "mined," using complex mathematical algorithms. Some merchants accept bitcoins as payment for goods and services. Users also can trade the currency on exchanges or among themselves. But it isn't regulated and isn't backed by a central bank, so when problems arise there is no one to intervene.

Prices of bitcoin have soared in the past year, attracting interest from some professional traders looking to participate in the market. But the troubles of Mt. Gox have underscored the need for more oversight.

The move by Perseus comes after SecondMarket Inc., a platform for trading shares of private companies, said it is putting together an exchange in collaboration with a number of global banks and bitcoin companies. SecondMarket CEO Barry Silbert said in an interview that the model "looks nothing like" Mt. Gox. Instead, he said, it will be "more like a traditional exchange…like the New York Stock Exchange, where you have regulated investors who form the spokes of a hub" with central clearing and settlement of trades and a self-regulatory body.

The U.S. firms trying to roll out new exchanges argue that by bringing in both the Wall Street establishment and regulators, they can offer customers greater confidence in the security of their money.

Mr. Percy said many high-speed firms have expressed interest in trading bitcoin, which appeals to this sector because of its low transaction costs. Meantime, Mr. Silbert said his firm continued to be approached by banks and other financial institutions despite the continuing turmoil at Mt. Gox this past month.

But Citigroup foreign-exchange strategist Steven Englander, who was initially inspired by interest from Wall Street clients to write a series of research reports on bitcoin late last year, said interest has since waned now that a string of crises has halved the bitcoin price to less than $600 from more than $1,000 in December.

"I would say it is still on the outer fringes of the radar screen," said Mr. Englander, who also argued that more-regulated, institutional bitcoin trading could drive away the more libertarian-minded investors who were drawn to bitcoin's anonymity and exclusion from government intervention.

Regulation could be a controversial part of this process. Most U.S. states require such exchanges to get money-transmitter licenses. The exchanges hope to avoid that. SecondMarket already has a broker-dealer license, which would cover currency trading. Atlas ATS hopes to partner with firms that already have broker-dealer licenses.

It isn't clear how federal regulators will respond to those plans. State banking regulators have been scrutinizing bitcoin companies for months.

"This is by no means a death knell for bitcoin or virtual currencies, but it underscores the potential benefits of regulation," Benjamin Lawsky, superintendent of the New York Department of Financial Services, said of the Mt. Gox shutdown in an interview Tuesday. Mr. Lawsky's office is considering potential new regulations for virtual-currency companies and held two days of public hearings about the issue last month.

Satoshi may have been wrong here; at least, 'lost' coins are indistinguishable from coins in cold storage.

Why? Both are, by definition, locked away and do not move.

If coins are lost, it is impossible to prove to another party that they are lost. Anyone can claim that the keys are lost; anyone can claim that coins at a particular address are/were under their control, and no-one is the wiser unless someone else turns up and shows that they control the keys.

So, except for people who themselves know that their own coins are lost and that no-one else has gained control, coins that are declared 'lost' cannot be known, by other bitcoin users, to be lost ; they must be assumed to be accessible unless proven otherwise, (which is impossible if actually lost).

And 'lost' keys can be found years later under certain circumstances.

More abstractly, lost coins are illiquid and, like cold-stored coins, reduce velocity, which may mathematically manifest itself in the economy.

HONG KONG/BEIJING (Reuters) - China's central bank demanded on Friday that payments made by scanning a bar code with mobile devices be halted, hitting the payment arms of Internet companies Tencent Holdings Ltd and Alibaba Group Holding, amid concerns over the security of their verification procedures.
The move is the latest in a series of clashes between China's finance sector and Chinese Internet companies, which have pushed into the banks' territory by ramping up their own financial services, offering online payment services and wealth management products.

A PBOC spokesman said the bank is asking the companies to submit detailed reports on their procedures.
"The notice was issued all of a sudden ... This notice had a great impact on our business," said an official from Alipay, Alibaba's online payment affiliate, who declined to be identified as they were not authorized to speak to the media.
The PBOC document was issued "in order to protect the payment service market, and prevent payment risks", a source who saw the notice told Reuters.
Shares of Tencent slid as much as 7 percent in Hong Kong.
China CITIC Bank Corp suspended trading of its shares after the stock fell 8 percent in Shanghai and 7 percent in Hong Kong. China CITIC Bank has said it will operate virtual credit cards with Tencent and Alibaba that use the payment process, known as a "QR" code.
QR codes are bar code-like images that can be used to transmit web addresses, payment details, or other information.
China CITIC Bank told Reuters it had not received any document from the PBOC.
Analysts said other new offerings or technology could also be at risk.
"It is a negative sign to the market. The central government steps in to control a supposedly very free and innovative area of business. In February, Alipay said it handled 900 billion yuan in mobile payment transactions from more than 100 million users last year, completing more mobile payments than U.S.-based PayPal and Square Inc combined.

"If the government is pushing back on the QR code thing, it's probably a temporary thing until the government figures out what is going on," said Michael Clendenin, managing director of Shanghai-based RedTech Advisors.
China's Internet companies have repeatedly clashed with entrenched interests in the finance sector, as companies like Tencent, Alibaba and Baidu Inc push further into their territory.

The BBC dont have adverts , they make their money from TV licensing hence why its UK only. But yes geofencing is annoying but Its so simple to circumvent who gives a shit.

No "we" pay tax so that its made at all. Its not like an on demand model where they make the show either way and then recoup costs from selling the show. Its a whole set of channels that is run on TV licensing funds and by receiving terrestrial TV it is presumed you are also watching the BBC.

Huobi had been contacting various government agencies about the “April 15” news that had been spreading on the internet. Of the one processors that said that there might risk going forward. They told us that it is because someone reported them to the corresponding government agencies citing violation of the PBOC regulations on Bitcoins that were announce on Dec. 5 last year.

Banks:

We have accounts with the banks listed below. Information from the branches of those banks is that they did not received any memo about Bitcoin in the last three months.

The banks told us that they have only learn about “April 15” from the news.

The banks stated that they do not know if the news reported about “April 15” is true.

That all the information we here at Huobi have at this time. They are all from direct sources. We try to be as objective as possible. As to why the information we got is different from other exchanges', our best guess is that could be due to that we are located in different jurisdiction and do not share the same providers. As to why different jurisdictions and different providers have different policies? We do not know. Based on the information we have and the current uncertainty, our third-party payment processors and us came to a mutual decision to stop processing deposits as of April 5. Starting from now, we will upgrade our direct bank deposits service to operates 24 / 7, to insure all deposits are processed in a timely matter. Other than the above changes, our CNY withdraw, Bitcoin/Litecoin withdraw and deposit are not effected.

Lastly, Huobi would like to say:

The current uncertainly and elevated price movements led everyone trying their best to find information they that want to heard. The shorts want everything from Bitcoin exchanges announce to be bad news, they will start their attack at the sight of any good news and vice versa. Latest news from Huobi:
At roughly 10:00am today, we received notice from the Zhongguancun Branch of ICBC (Industrial and Commercial Bank) that they had been notified by operations management to cease providing service to Huobi, and would be closing Huobi's ICBC account by April 18.
At roughly 10:30, several of the Huobi partners rushed to the Zhongguancun Branch of Huobi to communicate with the Customer Manager.
The situation is as follows:
They did truly receive notice from higher up at the bank, requesting a halt to our ICBC Zhongguancun Account, effective April 18
The notice was an oral notice. The branch has not received anything in writing
When asked why other banks had not sent out the same notice, the response was that different banks may be interpreting policies in different ways, and may have different levels of sensitivity
When asked if there was any room for maneuvering, the answer was that there was none. The order had come from above, and there was nothing to discuss
When asked how to handle user funds in the future, the answer was that we could shift our funds to a different commercial bank, but not ICBC.
We asked the Customer Manager to provide his views on the Bitcoin policy and related matters, but since they did not represent ICBC's views, and had little direct bearing on Huobi's operations, they will not be explained point-by-point in this notice.
Today at 12:00, we rushed back to the office to release this notice. Before release of this notice, we did not notify any users or organizations in advance. Please keep an eye on this.
Huobi will officially suspend deposits through its ICBC Zhongguancun Branch account next Monday (April 14)(this will not affect users withdrawing cash from ICBC. We will use accounts at other banks to transfer the funds to your account). At present, this does not affect other banks. Huobi will release any new information immediately.

LocalBitcoins received a very dangerous attack against the site infrastructure on Saturday 3.5.2014.
For now

• All user data and Bitcoins are safe;
• The site will be down for a while as the system is being rebuilt

Details
LocalBitcoins hosting provided received a request to restart the LocalBitcoins.com website server and give access to the server console (root) on Sat May 3 13:32:27. LocalBitcoins team did not initiate this request. For now, it looks like the request was made using spoofed email addresses and other weakness in the hosting provider support system.

• LocalBitcoins team was alerted about the abnormal activity when the hosting provider restarted the server.
• The attacker gained a root access to the server for ~40 minutes before the attacker was kicked out and the server shutdown.
• All data on the website server is encrypted. Manual actions are needed to make this data readable, so the attacker could not gain access to the data even when having a server console access.

It is very unlikely that the attacker gained access to any data;  LocalBitcoins is still performing full investigation on the matter.

• Bitcoins in hot wallet and cold wallet are safe, as LocalBitcoins runs its bitcoind and wallets on a separate server.
• LocalBitcoins team has started to rebuild the website server on fresh hardware.

LocalBitcoins team will make further announcements when the investigation proceeds and the site becomes available again.  We expect to spend at least 24 hours on this. LocalBitcoins team apologizes the issues the downtime may cause to the users.

Not only that though but you can also GET bitcoin instead of cash for your old phones games etc. Most merchant adoption we see has a depressive action on the market but with this if they pay out more in Bitcoin than they get in they will actually have to buy BTC! Even if they dont they wont be selling all the BTC they get like other places. Theoretically the majority of the business could be done in BTC.

When did the hardfork occur?  Things have been so slow in terms of transfers it's ridiculous.

All this crap about slow bitcoin transfers is complete FUD.  I made several large and small transfers this past week between multiple local wallets and web wallets, and they all were fully confirmed within 10 mins or less.

From here you can see that there are 90k spam tx in Mempool backlog, and total fees of 4.5 BTC, giving an average fee of 0.00005. Given that genuine tx's will be being sent with minimum .0001, and many with more than that, the fees on the spam are tiny, hence the backlog should only affect anyone who wants a fee-free tx. Boo-hoo ...

There have only been 35 trades so far in the ETH/EURO market and most of those have only been for one coin. You are correct.  I am not engaged in any kind of brevity, which is to say terseness, to trade BTC, so I find it conducive to extensively expound those, my terms or methodologies, and I don't feel inclined to look them up, at the moment or in foreseeable future, which is already priced in.

Furthermore, I do not understand how or if I may have tailored any of those referred to methodologies to achieve certain objectives in any kind of meaningful way or if you may have screwed them up or learned them over time through trial and error.  

More or less, I explained my personally tailored approach in laymen's terms which boils down to what I tend to do mostly manually under various circumstances, which is posting long meandering posts, one of which I am in the process of currently posting, or, rather, typing up the post which I will post presently, rather than some pattern that is programmed to repeat under a variety of scenarios. My posts, such as they are, that is to say remaining invariably long under any and all circumstances, remain invariably long. You may or may not have noticed that I am not a bot, even though you assert that you have been engaged in programming one or more bots, no? Or yes?    

In any event, it doesn't really matter too much how many words I chose, because, as I have emphatically stated and/or typed in this very post, which I am currently in the process of typing, I am currently in the process of currently posting, or, rather, typing up the post which I will post presently, rather than some pattern that is programmed to repeat under a variety of scenarios.
