maybe 448 is better

I think 440-450 is good, but 460~ is safer play

I don't see the price going any lower than $480 really.  There is so much resistance between here and $432 anwyay

Is there any evidence to the belief that expansions in the bitcoin ecosystem, services & economy actually increase the price..??

Seriously, merchants don't need to keep 'reserves' of 'BTC change' in their 'digital money registers' like stores do w/ fiat. They aren't interested in speculating in BTC future price rises either. They're in fact wary of it - they just want the extra potential sales & rep from bitcoiners. That's why they use services like BitPay. Payment re-processors such as BPay also are not interested in hoarding or buying crypto. They just facilitate things by accepting a cryptopayment from end users, dumping it at market (or pretty fast in any case), giving the merchant their proceeds in fiat & keeping their cut in fiat.

Those customers, the end-users of all these crypto-friendly merchants & services. THEY are the ones implyingly expected to cause higher prices, by buying moar BTC now that they can shop at a greater variety of places w/ it. But who are the vast majority of cryptocustomers..?? ..BITCOINERS. Enthusiasts. Folks who -already- had their stash & don't mind spending out a little of it here & there. Whatever extra BTC they may buy to shop with will be compensated by what they spend - given that the merchants & payment processors will be dumping the BTC thusly received as payment.

So why in the WORLD is there this MYTH continuing about merchant adoption, growing ecosystem = higher price? Wtf? What am I missing..?
More places to spend Bitcoin = More useful = Higher demand = Higher price

Depends on your perspective. How was it "one entire bear trap" to sell at 995 in January and buy back more than twice as many coins at several points following 2014?

Your position probably is: hold now, or regret it later when we make a new ATH.

A competent trader's response would be: why does being short now have to be mutually exclusive with profiting from another ATH rally in the future?
That would be profiting from the bear trap, aka avoiding the bear trap by re-buying when it is low.

It still is a bear trap in the sense that weak hands have sold off their coins they bought in January and will miss out on the spike this September to $350k.

But why exactly did the Chinese exchanges pull out of the bitcoin summit, and what is the real chance they shutdown without notice in the next days?

Shutdown without notice is not that high I think, the chance of a shutdown notice being published is very likely imo.
With a deadline or two, of course!

The latest rumor is shutdown before 30 June

Another deadline would look as if the Chinese govt doesn't really want to, or is unable to.

Today Bitpay is coming with a huuuuuge announcement right?

We will see. It is the new crypto trend to pre-announce announcements and not deliver.

It will just hurt bitpay to tweet about something big and then go silent.
They don't want to ruin their reputation  , I hope.

Where did you hear this? I couldn't see anything about an incoming announcement on their Twitter. If they do have anything to announce they'd keep it until the conference this week surely?
Check their twitter.

https://twitter.com/BitPay/status/465206481474686976

It's not really an announce but it's a hint something will come. And that thing is big =))))
But i'm really worried about how big or small this might turn to be.

Right now we are at that point of inflection where the rocket is powering but is stationary, give it a while and it will shoot up

You only perceive the posts as negative or bearish because of how they integrate into your belief structures of the way btc is supposed to trade. However, if any non-btc-iniated rational investor was to hear my projections, they might actual find them to be incredibly bullish. For example  [we're only on a 500% growth per year trend rather than a 1000% growth per year trend] and [if the sky falls we might see as much as a 40% drop but it'll have a sharp rebound and break $1000 in 2015]

When do you guys think the first sell-off will be?
Will it crash from 600-400 then back up? 800-600? 1000-400? Previous ATH?

How do we agree on a previous ATH when the price was different on all the exchanges plus mtgox is gone? There was about a 1-day period at virwox where you could have sold 1btc for 300,000 SLL and sold those for $1320. So did virwox have the highest ATH at $1320? or do we go by bitstamp or mtgox or huobi ATH?

When comparing the "point of maximum financial risk" chart with a standard bubble chart, do we overlap the risk chart twice? Going through all the risk emotions quickly during the first sell off? So we should hit a brief euphoria phase near the top of the first sell off?

I believe we will continue going through these bubble fractals until the public phase reaches final saturation. In the previous bubbles, each time we reach the public phase it doesn't absorb everyone so there is room left over for more bubbles. Bitcoin won't stop making bubbles until we've blown them in everyone's faces.

The days of sub-$500 BTC are over.

I am going to sleep and when I wake up I want to see the price at $540.  Do me proud bitcoin.

Yup. Good question.
She's gone quiet from the moment we went up.
Considering she lives in a fantasy world she probably just couldn't believe we went up and refused to buy back in as her buy orders at 280 weren't filled and now she finally woke up realizing she has a big problem.
It's quite hilarious how she has dissapeared since.

Don't worry. She is just calibrating her graphs.

The bid wall on stamp looks very thin. $660 was also a resistance in March. We may have some correction here (possibly another cup-and-handle)

During a bubble, the bid wall is always very thin. The thing is that nobody wants to sell now, because they would miss the obvious train.

I see tons being sold.

It's not so much the buying pressure causing the rally, but rather the lack of selling pressure. You can see this by looking at the volume which is very low. This could mean one or more of the following things.

1. Decentralization of exchanges

2. Growth of the marketplace,

3. Increased use of bitcoin as a currency which doesn't need to be converted into fiat.

4. Pump.

Fixed.

top line is drawn on exp chart, bottom line is on linear.

Currently, at the moment, as I type, it is good for sellers b/c BTC prices are going down.. and it is good for these sellers, so long as they get back in before the market reverses and continues on its likely upward trajectory, which could happen at any time.

Yeah..... I guess you and I have different priorities here. I can't imagine they could be come to worth 4x the value of a bitcoin -- after all, they are..... bitcoins -- but to each his own.

I imagine that by the time the sun is a red dwarf, if they are worth 1% more than 1 BTC, the gain in value is quite enormous.  That kind of wealth preservation is hard, very hard, to find.

The art market is quite volatile.  It's easy to make or lose a fortune on Cremonese violins or Faberge eggs.  Easy to lose, if you have a forced sale.  Easy to win, if you have infinite patience.
They may be worth more, but who would actually care enough to pay the premium?

And this in turn will invite all the other past criminals to dump their coins because they don't want to lose their promised wealth.

Most of the bitcoin cultists don't understand the psychology of criminals. They usually don't think long-term and they go after quick fixes. I highly doubt it that many of them are as fanatical about bitcoin as the people here are. The only reason why they haven't dumped their coins yet, is that there is hope that the price will rise more. This has made bitcoin into an asset, that's value has to be constantly rising or else it will face doom.

I consider it naive to think that the coins just got lost and isn't controlled by someone.
The lack of interest, that the bitcoin market shows towards finding out what happened to those coins, shows how immature the market really is.
I think they got stolen by Mark  Wink

Anyway, if criminals were that short-term, wouldn't they have dumped them before the collapse happened?  They would have got the highest price possible for them at the point

I might be wrong but i have the feeling people need a specific reason to buy more. Another deadline that turns out bullish. Obviously amazing news about big companies means nothing anymore.

I don't see anything bullish happening soon so my guess is we will go down again. A big dump followed by panic. Or a new round of hot steamy FUD. People soon will be looking hard for a reason to dump.
People are looking for a reason to sell. Not to buy. And that reason for selling can be almost anything. The reason for buying, almost nothing.
And i hate to sound like Tera so i hope i am completely wrong.

Well that escalated quickly.  We can have a small period of stability - which is very likely in this $600 price range.

europe banned bitcoin ?  Smiley

No, Europe did not and will never ban bitcoin.

They just warned banks that they should not deal with bitcoin because it's too risky.

They do not even say banks aren't allowed to use it, they just advice against it, and only for banks.

As always, bitcoin price overreacts heavily to news that sounds bad (even if it's not bad news, banks did not care about bitcoin in the first place). And it does nothing to reflect all the good news lately.

Even more reason to believe the price will soon skyrocket, because we have been ignoring the developments of the past few months completely.

That reads exactly like the Chinese bans at the beginning Smiley

Really interesting graph.  I think both bulls and bears can see these trends playing out.

And regarding the regulations: yes far from ideal but right now we need clarification that Bitcoin is legal to continue with the adoption process.  Laws can be changed down the line when large businesses accepting Bitcoin publicly criticize the regulations, rather than Bitcoiners.

Re the buying on Gox and selling in China - and the subsequent dump
It is highly likely that this was driven by a significant Chinese buyer in collusion with western based confederates seeking to remove their funds from China to evade the corruption probes that are ongoing within the Chinese state.
Someone or a group of someones wished to move USD millions from China into the West quickly (to evade confiscation) using methods that the PBOC were unable to trace. Acting in concert with a small group of westerners , who work orders for their client - buying bitcoin in the west and selling them in China to the client. This causes the initial increase in demand for coins (several 100,000 BTC) - call it $40-100mm CNY equivalent at prices below $500-$600.
(The westerners probably did this in exchange for a percentage cut of the USD amount successfully moved from China.)
This initial spike primes the bubble and unleashes the horde who then run the price up into the 1,000's, during which time the initial buyer(s) dump their coins via stamp , gox and other Western Exchanges, and continue to do so past the bubble (and possibly still continue to do), driving the price down until the initial investor is fully out of Bitcoin and into USD that the PBOC cannot trace.

Such an exercise would also explain the Chinese response to bitcoin and the Chinese authorities attempts to prevent fiat flows into BTC since the November/December bubble.

+1  Makes a lot of sense.
I am not convinced. I am as much as a bull as Bitchick, but it seems like we are constantly making excuses for Bitcoin's price.

I am starting to question just how much future expectations were already priced into the last bubble.  It could be that huge merchant adoption and Winkdex are already reflected in a $600 bitcoin

What good news? How do you tell if something has been priced in, and how long does that take? Do you have a framework to put everything in relation? News is even more subjective than technical analysis, and as far as I can tell it's one of the worst ways to trade.
What is confusing about Bitcoin is that good news has no effect on price, but bad news sends the price down  Huh

What is confusing about Bitcoin is that good news has no effect on price, but bad news sends the price down  Huh
In my view, that's because because of sentiment and technical analysis. Unless we're in a parabolic chasing new alltime highs (which is most of the time), positive news usually have little effect, simply because we're usually neutral or bearish then.

Here's one way to think of sentiment: When the pool of bullish people has been exhausted and noone has money left to buy, then we have a whole bunch of cheerleaders screaming moon train while building up insane expectations that inevitably, in most cases become disappointed simply by the price not moving for too long, or even moving counter their expectation. This creates disappointment, and now you can imagine what happens progressively as people start realizing their profits as the cognitive dissonance becomes too much to bear. Eventually, irrationality to the upside is followed by irrationality to the downside because so much disillusionment has been bred. To move up now, we need a good deal of this irrationality to the downside, or we need new bulls with new money because right now, we're trading pretty much the same USD back and forth.

tl;dr When shit isn't going parabolic, noone really cares too much. That's just how we humans are with regard to super volatile risk assets like Bitcoin.

Good explanation.

I was always thinking that the price would fall if the July rally never happened.  Lots of people trying to hold when they need funds, just in case it did happen.  And now it hasn't there is less pressure to hold.

Despair only helps existing bears, useless.
We need new people to get in, that's all.

But that sounds like the logic on which a pyramid scheme is based on! Aren't we trying to shed that clichee off of Bitcoin? Although I guess it is kind of true, because more people have to come in (or funds, to be precise) than there are new BTC mined every day!

Fresh money is needed if we want the price to rise, If the majority of people who see a future in bitcoin are already invested the only direction to go is down.
Not saying that everyone is 100% in bitcoin but a larger supply of fiat in the exchanges would be very beneficial.

If the price is falling fast, it would be stupid for them to buy lots of BTC beforehand just to be able to sell to people with no delay over the next few days.  The loss could easily wipe out all that they make from fees, and more.  Better leave the clients waiting.

I believe that is Coinbase's current business decision, in order to NOT be over exposed to downside volatility - however, it may be possible for CB to figure out ways to automatically buy the needed coins on the exchange, at the same time that the customer buys the coin, in circumstances in which they run out of coins.  I don't know the exact solution, but I do agree with you that their business decision is to not over expose themselves to downward BTC price volatility.

The problem I'm having with Coinbase is now they want to control volatility on both sides of the equation: during sharp downturns and sharp upturns.  So this means that they will quickly and mysteriously "run out of coins" during the next bubble as well, which will neuter how high it can go by excluding their customers' influence on the market.  This is not allowing the free market play out appropriately, it is trying to control the market, and that is what worries me about Coinbase.

It won't do much.  Demand will still be there when they have available coins.  If anything, people tend to want things they cannot have even more.  They will never control the market, but they may be able to slow down the rate of change, although they cannot change the end price.

Ask yourself one question: Do you belief Bitcoin will reach 1000 USD again?

If the answer is yes, hold or buy. Simple as that.

Ask yourself a better question:  Will Bitcoin price go lower, regardless of whether it eventually hits 1k?
If the answer is yes, sell.
No there are a range of strategies:
Buy and hold
Hold
Sell and then buy

Lose vs Loose

A lot of people are mixing up lose and loose. In particular, a lot of people are writing loose when they really mean lose. Here are the definitions of the two words from my Penguin dictionary:

loose [lOOs] adj not fastened or pre-packed; not tied up or confined; able to move freely; not tight, not firmly fixed; not close-fitting; careless, inaccurate, vague; dissolute, immoral; not closely woven; flabby; (of bowels) inclined to diarrhoea; l. box stable or van in which an animal can move about; at a l. end uncertain what to do next; unoccupied ~ loose adv in a loose way; play fast and l. behave rashly or unscupulously ~ loose n release; on the l. free from restraint; on a spree; ~ loose v/t untie, undo; release from confinement or constraint, set free; detatch; fire (gun); shoot (arrow); (eccles) absolve.

lose (p/t and p/part lost) [lOOz] v/t and i no longer have; be deprived of by accident or misfortune; mislay, fail to find; fail to get or win; be too late for; be bereaved of; waste; be defeated or beaten; suffer loss, become worse off; fail to hear, see or understand; cause or allow to perish; (of clock or watch) go too slowly; (refl) miss the right path; become absorbed in; l. one's head become flustered, panic; l. one's temper grow angry; l. one's way fail to find the right path; l. out (US) be defeated after a struggle.

Examples:

   This knot is too loose.
Please do not lose my book.
I had better not lose that file.
many BTC owners are facing the prospect of selling their BTC for a loss

I think that is mainly because the decline has been so gradual.  Lots of 10% price drops hurt less than one 60% sell-off imo.

That only applies if we didn't experience a final bottom. your chart assumes its a bear market always.

That is NOT the short squeeze. It's the stutter step (the fake out) BEFORE the short squeeze. Volume tells the story. We're going to $350, but I dunno how far down we're going first.

Nobody is more aware than me how dangerous it is to be short right now, but we're still up over 27% in the last week and I think there will be more of a correction first. volume right now still shows more resistance than support.
I'm not even sure what pattern it is supposed to be but it looks really the same!

Also it is 6:50 am in China. Dump maystart anytime now. Fasten seat belt.
