He refers to the payment network at "bitcoins" plural, which to me is not the way Satoshi would refer to the system.  Also I still believe it was Nick Szabo,  read about his bit gold project here https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Bit_Gold_proposal. He also matched with a writing analysis.

All this media coverage makes me so happy.  All press is good press when it comes to bitcoin if you are going long.  BTC will survive all this and it will just get more and more ingrained in people's minds that it is here for stay.  As more and more people realize that bitcoin will survive, even just underground, the more and more people will start to trust it.  Only 21 million people can possibly have a whole bitcoin.   Are you going to be one of those people?

I don't understand you.  You come to bitcointalk to post this drivel?  You don't even have interesting analysis or thought-out speculation. Instead of spending your life trying hating on things, you should try to build something up. You like ripple?  Go to ripple forums and talk about ways to improve ripple, be productive.

Is the life you want to live, one of negativity?  Is this how you want to spend your time?  Do you always try to cut down everyone around you in life?  Do you have many friends?  Do you care about making the world a better place?

During that time, you missed a grand opportunity to triple your coins. Snooze, you lose.

Or a great opportunity to lose most your coins.  Day trading is great for some but I don't have the time or energy. I prefer to make money by working at my job and instead of spending that time trading.  Bitcoin is a big enough gamble the way it is.

Maybe they want to price to tank, ,so they can accumulate more ripple. Maybe they have made some big deals with a few banks and need to get the supply back completely in their hands.

Again, maybe.

Seems a retarded thing to do though.

Still a premined scam and people should have thought twice before investing in it. Not taking the piss out of them but just why is beyond me. XRP is still traded like any other crypto and you dont have to look very far to see the corpses of other dead cryptos. The network will obviously survive but holding XRP seems a silly move. Who knows maybe it wont be, just my 0.02BTC

Premined doesn't automatically mean scam though. Ripple has a different vision and idea, and I could see it being used between banks just because of the corporate background. It is an interesting project. I would never buy it, but I actually own about 5k xrp (which is nothing) from running BOINIC on a spare computer.

Not necessarily a scam, but if the premine falls > 50% in the hands of a single individual then it's a huge risk to other investors. BTC is at lower risk due to only 10% under control of Satoshi and 7% under control of gox "hackers"

Not the point. The blockchain can be used in many ways when a 100% or 50% premine is preferable. Especially internally or for applications such as voting.

However, by that measure bitcoin has already achieved success. The bitcoin network currently mediates between 50 and 60 thousand transactions every day, transferring an estimated 70 million USD every day.
As far as bootstrapped nascent currency experiments go, bitcoin should certainly fulfill many criteria for "success" already.
Curioulsy the number of transactions per day and their total BTC volume have increased very little, or not at all, since September last year.  So, either commercial e-payments  are a small fraction of those numbers, or they are not increasing (and their USD volume is actually decreasing, since the BTC price has fallen considerably in that period).

The number of transactions increases in waves similar to the price function.  Also many transactions are now being done off the blockchain. I use coinbase app on my phone and when I go to the bar in my area they use coinbase merchant.  That transaction is never shown on the blockchain.

Problem with FAKE BTC and FAKE FIAT being used to bid up the FAKE price, is that it is all FAKE and take the trickery away and there is only one logical outcome when the market reverses back to relying on REAL trade.

Wrong.

Willy bot was less than 15% of volume on Mtgox.

Mtgox did not lead us up, that was China. Remember you throwing hissy fit about china controlling the prices?

15% of an exchange that was like 10% of overall volume for all exchanges.

Let's stop with this myth. People have been saying this since day 1. If this was true there wouldn't be any weak hands anymore.
Weak hands are selling to other weak hands. This will never change. There will always be weak hands.

There will always be weak hands. But if they are buying now, when someone else is selling, then they are obviously strongER hands.

This makes the previous bubble irrelevant. Historical data from September fake. All those trend-lines and analysis is based on fake trades and volume. Why the hell isn't anybody saying a thing??

Because willy's volume was 15 % of an exchange that was barely 10 % of the overall volume over all the exchanges.

Remember it was China that led us up, not Mtgox.

I don't think that average Joe clients are under any pressure or threat.  At most they may have their bank accounts closed if they manage to use them to trade bitcoins.  If there will be penalties, they should fall only on card processors, exchanges, brokers etc..

Hm, clearly the money flow is not cut out but it isn't sufficient for why China is taking lead again.

Why China is taking the lead again, even though money flow in is more complicated than other areas?

-Chinese are real bitcoin believers?
-chinese are more greedy?
-chinese whales are special?

What else?

Maybe because China has a population of like 1 billion.  Even if a less percent of the Chinese use bitcoin, it is still a greater number than in the west.

Heavily involved miners is my guess...

I had a theory about that a while ago, something about how geeks in their basements can mine for months and not take profits,

but institutional miners with real bills to pay will be cashing out like clockwork, and will help to curb our enthusiasm on this next epic rise.

or something like that  Grin

Well, as the price goes up miners need to sell less coins to pay their budgets. As they sell less coin, there is less coin on the market making the price rise even more.

If they should not have been stolen, nobody can transfer their coins to sell on an exchange, before the upcoming crash.
Nobody can see the huge spike in "bitcoin days destroyed" that is happening right now.
Either way - CUSTOMERS HAVE BEEN CHEATED ONCE AGAIN AND WILL LOSE SHITLOADS OF MONEY!

Not that quick and it hard to hodl.  Think about it, the people who bought coins for very cheap have some major balls to hold for this long.  Many people sold when it went to 100 or even when they made a thousand bucks. When at any point it can go to 0.  If you hold in this crazy market, you DESERVE the reward.

BTC used to do 100-200K per day of volume on mtgox. The tiny volume of 10-20K per day on bitstamp during rally is pathetic and nothing in comparison to previous volume levels. Even huobi (whatever portion is real), stamp, and btce combined are nothing compared to previous combined volume levels. A $10M increase in swaps is nothing compared to an $8Bn market cap. Obvious some other force is moving the market. If I was using Stamp's volume in my technical analysis, I would not even be here - I would have abandoned bitcoin.

I agree that the lack of volume is very disturbing.  I'm skeptical about the level of off the market transactions.  Can this volume be identified in the blockchain?  Why aren't we reading stories (with solid facts) about it?  I know people like to keep things private - but there are a ton of researchers who like to dig things up (ex. the research done into the original Silk Road volume), and at least some bitcoin millionaires who like publicity.

Shouldn't the volume be lower in BTC as the price goes up?  How does the volume in USD and CNY compare?

I agree. We just went 445 to 685 in a short time. I think a retrace back to 580-600 (most likely 600) is necessary. This just normal market action and no cause for panic at all.

Well, it seems that the list is not quite the list of bidders.  USMS clarification, quoted in the CoinDesk article:
Quote
One of the emails that we sent out this morning inadvertently showed a list of some of the individuals who have asked a question or questions about the pending bitcoin auction.
And, besides, the article says
Quote
the original intent of the email was to inform interested parties about an updated FAQ related to the bitcoin auction.
So the list of bidders may not include any of those people, and may include any number of other people.

Thats called damage control

Bitcoin can go only one way in the long term, and that's up. Demand, demand, demand.

600 is something incredible. I bought during the hype of the April bubble with most in the 140-160 range.  Just the fact that a digital token on a decentralized global ledger has ANY non-zero value is an incredible feat and worthy of ribbons, nobel prizes, and all the pussy Satoshi wants.

okay, lets say one of you guys really wanted the coins. would you put a sealed bid at market price (hoping no one else wants to pay retail). or would you pay 10-20% more or less?

If I wanted 3k coins, I would contact a miner and attempt to negotiate a price a little under market.

If this auction appeared on my radar whilst I was considering it, I'd probably throw in a low-ball offer on the off-chance.

Thus I think these coins will sell at a discount.

Yeah just so easy to replace a 100+ petahash network, bitcoin ecosystem and all the enthusiastic bitcoin (almost cult-like) users.

The hashing power, and the "ecosystem" aren't tied to bitcoin just like the fanatics, who will run towards every new get rich quick scheme they come across. Most of the fanatics aren't fanatical about bitcoin. The majority of those think that python is only an exotic reptile. This majority is fanatical about getting rich without doing any work, not about bitcoin.

Most of the early bitcoin adopters saw the potential revolutionary change that a decentralized currency with a fixed supply would bring to the world. The wealth it brings is just part of the inherent design of a fixed supply. I don't see how rewarding those who understand this somehow makes anyone buying bitcoin just "get rich quick" schemers. People who bought early microsoft stock aren't labeled as get rich quick schemers? They saw potential and put their money to work, it is a risk and thus comes reward.

Bitcoin is a technology (AND IDEA), and yes it could be replaced, but Wall St will not get the bandwagon effect that a grassroots decentralized currency like bitcoin brings.

But this has absolutely nothing to do with coin valuation. By the logic of your argument an almost infinite number of small coin networks renders any large coin network of 0 value (say a 1 million user network in relation to 10^30 networks of coins with 10 users each also effectively leads to a value of practically 0 for the 1 million user network)

Bitcoin doesn't care about 'unit's value', it's practical functions remains and behaves exactly the same with Bitcoin at $1 or $1000 on exchanges. And in the end, this is exactly what gives real value to the protocol.

I don't know how you feel about central banks printing hazillions of paper money devaluating and stealing your live savings. Are you saying because you know who they are you are okay with that?

Banksters are the real criminals here, they are slaving world population, our friends, families and kids by debt, not a bunch of anonymous drug dealers.

And about MtGox, i lost €9000 and 100BTC myself. But it was a risk i was taking by having so much money on a unregulated exchange, and i'm ok with that. We are now in the Bitcoin Wild West Era, but things will change in a future with regulated and insured exchanges.

And i would care less, if those criminals you are talking about dump the stolen Gox coins on Stamp, cheap coins! Smiley

Unit value wouldn't matter if bitcoin would be a play money that doesn't have a unit value. If bitcoin tries to be a serious financial tool, then unit value and it's stability and predictability are one of the most important things. In the world of finance, one of the most important aspects is planning. And you can't make any plans based on a currency that isn't predictable.

The main flaw of central banks is that they are too optimistic in "printing money from the future". When their optimistic plans don't work out, then they make new optimistic plans to try to ignore the failour of their previous plans. This creates a situation where there isn't enough wealth that everyone hoped for, and the necessary wealth will be created in the form.of debt, that basically is a promise that somehow we will create this wealth in the future.
The other important flaw forn the US Fed, is the lack of regulation and too much freedom and trust towards the private sector. US Fed runs on the assumption that the private sector knows what it's doing and is ethical in it's reasoning.  Of course that's not the case, and the outcome for this is that the public sector is paying for the private sectors stupid risks.

What is the solution for it? I am sure that the solution isn't bitcoin. Bitcoin as a solution would be like cleaning your room with a grenade. It won't fix the existing problems, and it will create a new and even worse problems.
The sad thing is that there isn't an easy fix for this problem. The solution would.be in people educating themselves and working harder on theie choices on who will they elect for the public office. If people are educating themselves through youtube and  giving their vote based on who screams nonsense louder, then we shouldn't be surprised that crooks get elected who in turn hire new crooks in the power circles.

For all the virtues that the current generation lacks, I miss the sense of responsibility the most. Everyone likes to blame the evil banksters, while they themselves don't even work 10 minutes a year to chose on which elected to vote for.

It doesn't matter who you elect because as soon as they are in office they are swayed by political pressure, lobbyists, plain old greed, whatever.  Politicians do/say whatever it takes to take office, from there it's just a shit show.  I like your attitude but voting has never worked.

A verified source with the USMS who wishes to remain anonymous stated to Coin Fire, “It is really important that we get this 100% right. We have to verify that they aren’t tied to any sort of criminal activity, we have to verify we have the money from the wire transfer. If we send the coins we understand we will have no way to reverse the transaction so every step is being taken.”

Makes sense to me. We are dealing with the government here and obviously if they can't even send an email right, its probably the best thing they can do.

Top post on /r/bitcoin is about cashing out.  Despair phase starting to bottom out.

Alternate interpretation:  Bitcoin adoption falling, bitcoin usage set back years.

Blame all those guys who dump 1k-5k coins each to break major support levels so they can have 5M USD after the next bubble (which I doubt will happen) instead of only 3M USD.  Blame the guy who put up 2k coin walls when we got to 685 and walked the price down 5 USD at a time, so he could scoop up cheaper coins.  They think they can stop shoving the market down and the price will pop back up; I doubt that, too, as users continue leaving the currency.

During the period when btc VALUE increased most rapidly, the exchange rate crashed and drove out users.  Sad.  A hell of an epitaph.

lol, It was the same way last summer.  Its just part of the cycle. I think mt gox did some damage that is taking us a while to recover from.  I think when Circle comes online for everyone and people can use their credit cards to buy bitcoin it will start things up again.  So many newbies ask about bitcoin but when they discover they cant just buy some with a CC they get turned off and dont purchase any.

Before I got married, two things were made clear: 1) I was going to end up getting a motorcycle again (took a few years but it was definitely not going to not happen) and 2) toilet seat not open for discussion.

Though I will say, for point 2, we recently got a soft-drop toilet seat and now that putting the lid down is just a nudge to the top, I'm far more inclined to do it. Especially since the cat looks at the draining water like it's some magical mystery fun portal.

I understand that it's possible they get a bunch of banks aboard, but that's more like a slim chance, a gamble. How many they got now two, three tiny ones?

yep, 3 tiny one are officialy onboard but this means a lot. Rabbobank is also testing and national city bank too  and they are not tiny.

But this is true Ripple will attract first small banks. But I'm telling you 100banks the next 12months is really possible.

The only way you can profit is by holding XRP, yet large amounts of it can be released onto the market, or created at any time. You can only profit if they let you, and they won't allow outsiders to reap huge profits for their hard work (assuming Ripple makes huge profits long term - which is very debatable).

still a very very bad understanding of ripple...

How is he wrong?  Ripple decides the amount of XRP on the market. Ripple is only good for lubricant to facilitate trade between currencies instantly. It is not ment to be a storage of value.

Here is one expert, cato daily, from the monetary conference.
Kevin Dowd, an adjunct scholar at the Cato Institute:

http://www.cato.org/multimedia/daily-podcast/unfortunate-future-bitcoin

"bitcoin will crash to zero, get out now! Yes, I am disappointed too."

Check out his reasoning: Loss of confidence.

And Cato is one of the best sources, committed to liberty.

Watch their conference. They are basically say bitcoin will fail and the non-mining coins will be far superior. Also that the 10 minute block timer for bitcoin is too slow. Regulations will crush it.

Dumping 50.000 BTC on the market soon sure is not bullish. I wish the US government is wiser and sell those seized coins slowly through the exchange.

I think its quite bullish. The BTC will go to people who most likely will hold or used as liquidity for bitcoin companies.

The people who bough the seized bitcoins in the first auction in July when price was around $650 should double-down.  If they indeed want to cost-average down.

Those coins have prolly already been sold and part of the reason why we are trading at this level now.

You can look for yourself.  They have moved once, 1500 coins going into the nether the rest still sitting untouched.

I actually want to see scenario when we go really low and mining becomes really unprofitable. That will be true test of bitcoin imho.

If that happens can we expect 5 hours for each confirmation?

lol no, block times will still average 10 minutes even if mining becomes unprofitable.  What happens is many inefficient miners will leave the network, bring down the hashrate til an equilibrium of sorts is reached

Inevitabley transaction  fees will  increase when miners  arent rewarded  enough as blocks divide  and the last coins are minted.

Not if the volume is sufficient. It will be market based.

I think the mini pump might have to do with the new version of bitcoin core being released. not really sure though, as this is bitcoin

Major improvements:

Headers first synchronization - faster and more robust initial sync
Dynamic transaction fee calculation - fees no longer hardcoded, scales with demand
Watch-only addresses - Track any address using the wallet, not just your own
Consensus library - abstracted interface for verification on a full node
More script opcodes considered standard - more power for programmable money
    Improved security - libsecp256k1, non-DER signatures prohibited
