Feels like someone buying all he can get "cheap", then letting the price settle again for a while.
Would make sense, if you have enough reserves to produce a "real" uptrend afterwards

This will make it possible for investors who don't dare to (or can't) hold BTC or deal with "shady exchanges" to purchase and invest in bitcoin the most legitime way. If I understand this right, the winklevoss twins are essentially selling their bitcoins to an audience which normally wouldn't buy bitcoin. So all those coins sold to this group, means there are now less coins on the market. As new shares are issued and the winklevoss sells out, they will accumelate new USD which they can use to purchase back their original holdings and additional bitcoins.

It looks like a very bullish sign to me. The biggest concern is that it would probably take months or years to be approved by the regulators (if ever).

BTC doesn't need more speculators.  Speculators dump coins in panic the moment the market looks bad.  We need a fucking proper bitcoin economy that isn't based off the sale of drugs.

In the WV document this is explicitly mentioned - price is based on speculation and not enough adaptation is happening yet. However, this will bring PR - the second bubble also ignited new business ideas and VC

anyone notice that MtGox also has 8000BTC ask wall at 170GBP, 6000BTC wall at 202EUR and 6000BTC wall at 285CAD.
So with the 6000BTC at 267USD, that's... a lot of BTC for sale.
wow, canīt believe I missed that one. Well spotted. Thank you
Its the same coins, I made the same mistake before.

Yup, same coins just expressed in a different currency

Numbers seem to be pretty round for that, don't they?
EDIT: nevermind, they are not round

Anyways, has Bitstamp ever seen so few coins for sale ever? 3.3k to 300$, 5.8 to 400..

Somebody is "hiding" a ~2000BTC ask at around $3300 on Gox's order book.  Not sure what they're trying to communicate since most people won't ever look up there.

I noticed this too.

Order book balancing ?

Without that 2000 BTC there would be less than 10k left for sale on MtGox at any price.

The rise in price is not what is bothering me. What IS bothering me is that people seem to think the rise in price is a sign of it going mainstream. BUT IT'S NOT. It's just a hype brewing right now. Speculators wanting in on a quick profit.

The rise in price wouldn't bother me at all if the bitcoin economy/ecosphere/trading platforms/regulation were ready for it. BUT IT'S NOT. And when people realize this it's gonna come crashing down, only to rise again in the future, once all the stuff I mentioned above is in order and in place. Wel...Maybe this is the way it works.

Big money wants in, don't be fooled by the big fish who patiently waits for cheaper coins.

This is no 2011, the stakes are much higher this time.

lots of coins were bought... but it means nothing still...there have been small lift offs since Friday into Monday no after burn though.

I will agree there was a lot of volume, in that quick window.. but if its new money.. and this doesn't cause lift off.. imagine those weak hands.. with 850 coins Cheesy

After reading that catastrophic 750k inheritance disaster story on reddit,..where not only did he get raped on the initial asset sale.. he then goes and buys at 850.. sells at 500 or something.. either way lost about 75k in a trade.

These kind of people see bitcoin and go herp derp I'll triple my money.. and then they try to day trade like there financial super stars.

I think what we need to see is sub 700 to break the cheap coins at 750-850 range, after that it could be either enough fuel to cause an after burn or what I'd like to see a test of the support levels. sub 700

It's a learning process really. I'll guess most of us lost some initially when trying to be the big trader. It all seems quite easy in hindsight - I just should have bought here and sold here..
Guessing most didn't start with that high stakes though.

I don't remember it being quite so big at the $100.00 mark?

Indeed! Personally I'm hoping for this public awareness to get new shops to accept btc rather then "just" more speculative money.

Here is a question: do crashes/corrections ever happen after the price goes sideways for a couple days? It seems like when the price stabilizes around a certain point for a few days, it usually goes up before it comes down.

the only "real" crashes so far seem to have come right in "full-steam" rallyes. We did have some nice drops after sideways action though.

Once we move to mBTC this won't matter.

Would you actually say to someone --->  how many would you buy today at $1.2 and how many would you buy if the price leveled off at .80 cents?

No, I doubt you would ask that question. Smiley
Is that indented to peg bitcoin to Feathercoin which trades at $ 1.13 at moment. so if bitcoin raises to 1.5 feathercoin should raise too

Mtgox is trying to stay in the front so hard but is not addressing the one and most important issue "withdrawals"
In real life, traders would avoid a market that lets them sell their wares but will not allow them to take their money out.

So, if people cannot take their old-fashioned currency out of MtGox, why are people using it?

SEPA withdrawals work just fine - so this is a US-problem guys.

Don't like the looks of it, and I don't see that changing very soon. Ergo: (relatively small) re-arrangement of my position complete. Just to let you know, arepo Cheesy

the outcome is still fuzzy short-term, but it doesn't look good for the coming week, that's for sure. i'm still expecting a bearish formation up to $875 +/- $10 on stamp before we break under the short-term bottom, but good call on the most recent move down. it's hard to make intraday calls better than chance, and so my focus is usually on risk management, and while i did take a small loss i quickly recouped it and more with a slight re-arrangement of my position as well Wink

--arepo

Haha, we don't talk about the same thing, I guess. I don't consider the low-900s to high-800s shift to be the short term drop I expected yet. Below 850, into the 700s maybe, is what I am (tentatively) expecting for the coming 24h to 48h. I can't trade the smaller swings or slippage eats my profits.

There is some support in these levels that is fighting back, but this is as bearish as the 12hr charts have looked since the last capitulation. The markets are hanging onto a thread with Friday and Saturday looming. The support would have to hold out for at least 48 hours before I might reconsider the charts.

Friday and Saturday have been good last weekend.. let's see how much the Overstock-news will affect price

Gox blamed it on the protocol instead of moving their fat lazy asses.. could also have been a nice excuse for them to further fuck with their customers and save their own asses. That would have to be quite a conspiracy. That would suggest Mark or somebody could do this without someone else in the company finding out or that the whole company is in on it.

But let's assume that's true. First they drove the price higher presumably to get more fiat and then are now driving it lower to get more coins, right?

Why not just operate as a fractional reserve? Some technical reason?

This will be an interesting story if we ever find out the truth.

If it is gox and they are not on fractional reserve why not simply send your coins to any other exchange and make a premium by arbitraging your own exchange?

Anyways, feels good that stamp don't give a shit anymore

Actually imagine if, instead of just getting cheap coins on gox, you were also trading them these past 2 days, and multiplied them by 3. I'm tempted to make a deposit to gox myself now.

trading these low levels is a serious risk, if they allow withdrawals and the price instantly shoots up. At least for me way to risky to sell anywhere near these levels on gox

Now here is an interesting one. Blue line Dow Jones Index from 1928-1930, red one is now. Will it follow ?

I doubt that today is going to follow...... we are going to have approximately one more year worth of bullish stock market performance...  Certainly, i am NOT an expert... just guessing...

Unless the Y axis starts at 0 it's bullshit.. the "old" line almost doubles in value, the "new" one clearly does not. Same thing with the total bid/ask charts posted from blockchain all the time here

edit: speaking about charts themselves, don't care about stocks too much.

you'd think there would be SOME rise in price on gox in anticipation of the btc withdrawals coming back online soon.

seems everyone has lost all hope for gox

True.. still seems funny to "panic sell" virtual currency into virtual dollars - as if chances are any higher getting one of the two if gox goes belly up.

3k coins... Wonder if any of them are goxcoins that somehow escaped the goxprison

Maybe someone inside gox? Sounds easy enough:
* give yourself xx virtual $
* buy "real" coins by placing an invisible wall
* send to stamp
* sell
* wait for real $$ to arrive
* fill hole in your goxusd-account
* profit

Just shouldn't get caught.. but they don't sound like the kind of guys with good practices in employee security

Would it not be possible to track the stolen coins and find out what exchange and account was used to sell them?

Probably, if both exchanges cooperate. But if the thieves used Tumblers, it would be damn hard.

If they used malleability to withdraw coins from gox double, they should be verified with gox themselves anyways. If they didn't use fake ids that is..

I sold some at $525 - thinking the price would go back into the upper $400s before going up....    mostly based on the lack of an announcement from GOX... and all those potential disappeared BTC... that are likely floating in the market... and also the other potential crap involved in the even that GOX customers are NOT made whole... financially......

I have been considering whether to cut my losses and to buy back in, or just to wait it out, hopefully, for the BTC prices to go below $520, again... ... I hate taking a loss on any of my trading...... but I do NOT want to get left in the dust, either, with a portion of my BTC portfolio... haven been converted to $$$ at $525...

Why not hold. Look back at it in 2 months time. It's always sell sell sell.

Indeed.. I guess most here agree, that in two month this will look to be a very good buying spot. Maybe not the best, but very good nonetheless.

Serious question: Would anyone use "GOX" if it was bought by a reputable company and re branded allowing limited customer withdrawals but with a guarantee that finds are safe. Then if they implemented full transparancy of user funds??

If the company is well known and can win back trust (e.g. by implementing a proof-of-ownership for all funds) I'm sure many people would. Also MK would need to be driven away with a large stick first.

Kraken is top a noch exchange, i would say it's the better out there, they only thing they are missing is volume. They where not affected by the malleability issue also.

Indeed, everything to do with Kraken so far was perfect. Maybe volume is low, because volume is low? Meaning, they are unattractive for bigger investors as they could not act without giant slippage.

I just thinking to buy more machines. If that graph really goes down and with more difficulty, did calculate in bitcoinwisdom, its never ROI. 1 TH with price almost 3500 USD (include shipment and tax). How the hell people still buy more machines ?

And why its goes down ? I dont see any bad news, and china's schedule for Global Bitcoin Summit 2014 in Beijing is coming up...

Because there is a small group of people with a lot of coins who want to take us down.
It can't be more obvious. The market actually wants to go up. But every single time we go up a bit there is a big dump. Pure manipulation.
I have no idea who these people are. I'm not into conspiracies but it stinks.

If 2013 is any guide, it takes 5 months from the capitulation bottom to reach the new high. Of that, 3 months nothing happened. So this month nothing will happen, May nothing will happen, June nothing will happen, July something will start to happen, August, latest September we are at $7.

Argh, how is it possible to wait 0.25 more YEARS, after all, it is 90 days, more than 2000 hours!! I want my candy NOW!!1

What? You mean $7 as seven dolars "new high"?

$7 per mbtc Wink

This is something I've been wondering for some time. Even if it is chinese, the logical reaction to a pending ban should be to _buy_ asap and transfer to a safe wallet.

Looks like someone tried to hack LocalBitcoins:

Quote
LocalBitcoins received a very dangerous attack against the site infrastructure on Saturday 3.5.2014.
For now
  • All user data and Bitcoins are safe;
  • The site will be down for a while as the system is being rebuilt

Details
LocalBitcoins hosting provided received a request to restart the LocalBitcoins.com website server and give access to the server console (root) on Sat May 3 13:32:27. LocalBitcoins team did not initiate this request. For now, it looks like the request was made using spoofed email addresses and other weakness in the hosting provider support system.
  • LocalBitcoins team was alerted about the abnormal activity when the hosting provider restarted the server.
  • The attacker gained a root access to the server for ~40 minutes before the attacker was kicked out and the server shutdown.
  • All data on the website server is encrypted. Manual actions are needed to make this data readable, so the attacker could not gain access to the data even when having a server console access.
It is very unlikely that the attacker gained access to any data;  LocalBitcoins is still performing full investigation on the matter.
  • Bitcoins in hot wallet and cold wallet are safe, as LocalBitcoins runs its bitcoind and wallets on a separate server.
  • LocalBitcoins team has started to rebuild the website server on fresh hardware.
LocalBitcoins team will make further announcements when the investigation proceeds and the site becomes available again.  We expect to spend at least 24 hours on this. LocalBitcoins team apologizes the issues the downtime may cause to the users.

It sounds like the localbitcoin guys did everything right. Anyways, it is incredible, that people are still able to pull the "reboot my server please" attack in 2014..
