BTC is continuing to hold pretty steady, the rest of the coins are on like a slow slippage...they seem to be losing value by the day, little by little...

Typically BTC is there to pull the rest of the coins up, but lately when there are price rallies, it is BTC only...

Well, Monero is performing quite decently.

I'd prefer to hear a rundown of the Jesus thing.  Any takers?

You would as you never provide TA.

Ok.  Here's the best I can do.  Resistance at 580.  Current price at 580.  I'll believe this is a rally if it breaks through on high volume.

C'mon tae fuck guys....this is easy TA:

That is from Bitstamp and I will just take this opportunity to state that what the other charts are doing is irrelevant. Bitstamp is where all the liquidity is and the exchange the whales trust the most. No leveraged trading on Stamp, no insider Stop Loss farming (using fake volume to trigger orders) on Stamp which skews the charts and the indicators. What is happening is a bear flag scenario. We are currently in the 4th drive of that flag with momentum indicators on lower time frames starting to look a bit maxed out with the expected signs of bearish divergences as might be expected from such a low volume rise, punctuated with some bear dropping 500 BTC bombs into Bid Wall. We will likely correct back a bit from here, before rallying again to get up and meet trendline, at which point the 4th swing will have completed, and we will be looking at going back down to test support and on the next occasion, probably break through it to find lower lows.

This has been my prognosis since the before the break down. This is why I went short on what will be my last ever BFX short trade at $600, only to have my stop farmed by the exchange in final 'Fuck You' rally to $615, where spot price stayed on Bitfinex for 2 seconds, before being back down at $600 within the hour. Bitcoinsrus contacted me by PM when we were breaking $580 a couple of days ago. I told him that $580 would be a good short, but I didn't think we were going to be putting in any brutal low. I advised my m8 yesterday to take a position at $560, which I believed would be good until about $585-$590. So I have been calling things pretty good recently so how much dosh have I made?

Let me see, -$150 on Short Trade due to both getting my Stop triggered and then further swindled by exchange front running Ask wall and pushing my Stop order up $8 per BTC.
and then -$30 Bitstamp fees on long I entered at $560, and then left at $560 after 500 BTC dropping whale gave me cold feet.

I have been calling market pretty well and only lost around $200!

Hooray for being a Shit trader! (my mate made a few pennies though)

At the end we get our dose of interesting TA, maybe wrong, but IS interesting. That are the kind of posts that are nice to read, instead of that ego-driven burst of flames and blablablahs

Nearly everyone will have more sensitive feelings due to the New Moon in Cancer which becomes exact in the heavens at 3:08 am early Friday morning.

Be open to compromise as the Moon opposes Pluto at 4:39 pm. Clear skies follow until the Moon squares unpredictable Uranus at 12:16 am early Saturday morning.

More trouble follows even as the Moon trines Saturn at 1:48 am and Luna then squares Mars at 2:19am. Don’t make any promises tonight.

USMS Bitcoin Auction an Inside Job ?

My guess is the coins changed hands but to someone who they already knew before would win the auction. US Gov wouldn't want to loose control over these coins. All coins they are holding are the equivalent of around 5% of all coins in existence - try to picture the value in a couple of years from now on.
This 30k auction was in my opinion THE test run for a soon coming much larger auction, where the US Gov is going to make us believe it wants to get rid of all the other sized coins.
There is no way to prove what I am saying could be true, but it is what sounds to me as a quite possible and probable scenario.

One fuddish news article and down we go.

Seriously how are we ever supposed to go up again if amazing news does nothing and any slightly negative news and it's dump fest.

This current dumping was so expected. They were just waiting for an excuse. Really anything could've done it.
It's all about fear and panic. It's what everyone is waiting for. All day they hoover their finger over the sell button thinking "can i dump already". Then they read a headline "bank EU warning" and bam! Dump!

So sick of it.
I totally understand why new people are afraid to buy. They see that anything, really anything causes people to dump. I wouldn't buy at these levels. I wouldn't advise my friends to buy.

I don't have a chart, but today's number is $596.  I am predicting today is a shakeout candle (daily action breaks the support/trend line, but finishes the day above the line; i.e. candle body above trend, wick crosses trend).  That would be a very bullish sign, and we would jump back up.

Any thoughts on what BTC might do when the U.S. announces that it is in a technical recession coming this Wednesday? Anybody think this could possibly move the dial or only in theory?

The announce is speculative or confirmed?

This is the latest update from the willy report, please read it.

Quote
I want to start off by saying I agree with a lot of the criticism on this article that’s appeared the Web; my conclusions were a bit too opinionated and perhaps exaggerated, and didn’t really fit the tone of the rest of the report, which was intended to be an objective account of my findings. I’ve corrected that with this update. Still, I stand by the most significant conclusion made: Willy was the cause for the November bubble. Sure, it didn’t do it all by itself, but it was the catalyst, and prevented price from coming down by effectively removing all selling pressure with its extremely constant buying (why market sell when you can place an ask order, and know it will be eaten into anyway?). In financial markets, sentiment is driven by price, much more so than the other way around. People see price skyrocketing, get euphoric, forget all the negative and assume the asset must be something absolutely amazing for people to place so much value in it (that, or they see an opportunity to “get rich quick”). It gets media attention, and sparks this whole positive feedback loop thing. A classic bubble in every way, really; but something has to light the fire, and subsequently prevent it from petering out.

Willy was the cause for the November bubble. So yeah, there it is.
Gox is not true. Especially during the last bubble to $1200 Gox was becoming less and less relevant and with pathetic volume, while the chinese at BTC China started throwing hundreds of thousands into BTC.

I have my doubts about the Willy report as well, but concerning the volume: It doesn't matter if the volume was rather low or the volume only accounted for 8% or whatever of coins traded on Mt. Gox because if Willy really only ever bought coins, it wouldn't drive the volume up that much. Coins get sold and re-sold and re-sold over and over again. If Willy is simply buying, that low volume is enough to push the price up.
If this should really be true... Wouldn't we now sit on a vastly inflated bitcoin price that is about to collapse at any time?

I understand that this is a BTC speculation thread; however, you are speculating too much without specifics.  give us some specifics.   Possibly Willy caused a certain amount of BTC price inflation; however, that potential price inflation would dissipate over time, no?  If we were at 20% price inflation in November 2013, does it follow that we would still be at 20% price inflation - likely NOT...... give some numbers to support your speculation in order to make it meaningful - otherwise you are just spreading and/or encouraging the spreading of near baseless FUD.

The Report points out that those bots (Willy/Markus) have bought a total of about 650000 BTC over that time. Sometimes they didn't even spend money for those trades. These 650000 BTC (plus the recovered 200000 BTC) amount to the total amount of Gox's lost 850000 coins. So maybe those 650000 BTC never existed? Maybe they were stolen and Gox tried to buy them from the customers for fake FIAT. The bots were constantly buying in a way that made it almost impossible for the price to go down! Couldn't this be a very valid reason for a bubble?

It makes a lot of sense.

I dont think the bubble was driven exclusively by the bot, however.

Bitcoins.

Money of the future?

People will laugh at how quaint it was, and at how many trees had to die, to carry around bits of paper money in folded carry cases made from the hides of dead livestock.

Coming to a reality to you soon.

Not a bad article, http://cointelegraph.com/news/112259/op-ed-is-bitcoin-ready-for-the-major-leagues

Interesting part:

A Death by Trading

One of the primary causes for price instability in commodities is the amount of trading and speculation that goes on. Particular groups try to corner certain markets by buying a great deal of the commodity, thereby driving up the price that consumers pay at the market. There is no real reason why Bitcoin cannot fall into the same trap as we get closer to the last mined coin. The above examples of people trying to corner the market are extreme examples. But even regular trading has a sometimes horrid effect on commodities as is evidenced by speculation in the energy industry.

The only way to prevent this from happening is to keep Bitcoin as decentralized as possible and as much of the currency as possible out of the exchanges and in the economy. Money on the trading floor enriches only the traders and owners of the commodity, not the end-consumers or people who buy the final product. Meanwhile, money that continually flows through the economy keeps it healthy and liquid.

Not like day/week traders care, but they are partly responsible for killing or slowing down BTC's success.
To everyone else, spend your coins when you have the option.
If you don't want to lose your amount of BTC, buy back the same amount which you'd otherwise spend in fiat.
Do this until it's not necessary anymore because you get your 'paycheck' in BTC.

As for speculating, the price will rise. You are delusional if you don't see the rapid increase in adoption from serious companies.

I just need to look at this chart to understand we are at a really dangerous point. Fiat bid sum is returning to prebubble levels, while bitcoin supply is quite higher. And it is quite scary while we are approaching to an important key level like $275.

Miners and merchants are drying the exchanges, current prices are not sustainable for a long time. Fiat entries needs to be improved, plus a massive pump event to break all the resistances to bring price to ATH where it can rally again. ETF probably will do this work, but there could be delays until it is up, you know how this things works.
Until that, IMO, bitcoin will keep slowly bleeding, with its ups and downs.

In bitcoinland nothing is what it seems, and more of the times it ends at the very opposite of the majorityīs expectations.

People are depositing too much faith in the ETF.

If we depend on the Winkilevos to succeed that means that we are fucked.

Good morning gentlemen!
What's the accepted backstory for today's meteoric rise?

I'll give my amateurish observations on the matter:

Whale #1 was busy all day slowly buying up coins on Stamp. That thinned the already meagre ask side out even more. Then s.o. placed a ~700BTC wall @ $329 on Finex, which scared the market up on both Finex and Stamp. As $330 swiftly broke on Stamp, whale #2 got FOMO and threw ~1mil. in fiat onto the market on Finex. Together with a bunch of shorts closing this caused Finex to go up $10. The price was then driven down slowly by 2000BTC in ask walls (Finex) until they got eaten in one swoop by s.o. going margin long, and got immediately replaced by ~2000 coins worth of bids which have kept us in this price range since then.

So I'd say it's just some big players trying to accumulate while the price is still (perceived by them as) low.

Cool!  Grin

Good observation.

One problem with defining trends via points of contact (or similarly, as channels) is that there is usually more than one way to define them that way, and in many cases, breaking out of one of them leads to price staying within the confines of the next (plausible) one.

Doesn't mean the approach is wrong or useless, but that it has to be seen in context. Here's the point I'm trying to make, with sound effects Cheesy

I don't know how it works on your exchange, but in my experience, every day you spend in the red you are bleeding out interest. Also, because of the spread, your position is in the red the second you make your bet.

Definitely a good idea to start with some small bets to get used to the system before swinging for the fences.

Well, how big are the interests? They aren't that big right

I still feel like this is market noise -- that there is no real driver behind this event and that it won't pick up too much more steam... it'll hit a TA impasse and fall back down. One driver could be Russia, but that doesn't make sense because BTC-e is in the pits vis-ā-vis the other exchanges. It could be the dark market situation, but that also seems to have fizzled already on the alt-coin side. So, I think it's just a run for a runs sake. That doesn't, however, mean that it can't go on. It just means that it probably shouldn't.

People purchased based upon the expectation of the great news from coinbase.

The fact that a FDIC insured and regulated exchange in the US with over 1million usable accounts to start has opened with 0 trading fees instead of 1% like before is a big deal. The fact that we will be able to use coinbase to set limit orders and trade at 0-0.25% instead of 1% is a big deal. The fact that no other exchange offers FDIC for usd balances is a big deal.

Thank you, Trust  Wink

They are not 'based in BTC'.
LTC or XMR or any other cryptocurrency can be used to quickly get funds from 1 exchange to another.  As long as the LTC/BTC or XMR/BTC pair remains the same at 2 exchanges, while there is a difference in the USD/BTC exchange rates, you can use it to arb.  Thing is that the LTC/BTC pairs have less liquidity, and will probably quickly become the same or similar at the various exchanges.  (I don't have any experience doing this, just based on theory)

I'm not sure if whoever's hoarding LTC is trying to make money on the arb or just trying to manage the BTC pump.
hoarding is very different from arbing.  Arbing (arbing BTC prices and using LTC as a money transfer between exchanges)  would't move up the price of LTC (only very slightly), as it would get sold again on the other exchange after a few minutes.

I got it. Thanks Wink

I think it is an error with the Bitcoinwisdom conversion rate.

Impossible such gap be maintained for so long

Nope , not an error with the conversion rate. That gap is real. It's totally fucked up and weird , but it's real. Don't trust me , just check the current CNY USD rate anywhere on the web , then do some basic math , and you can see for yourself it is totally spot on with what bitcoinwisdom is showing. My guess is , traders on finex stamp coinbase etc at this point collectively do not trust the huobi okcoin btcchina etc rates to not be artificially inflated , and so they're actively buffering the price with a ~$20-30 gap at the moment. That , or traders are anticipating a severe devaluation of the CNY in the next couple days and are unwilling to risk any amount of time being in CNY instead of USD or EUR , therefore arbitrage is not happening at a high enough volume to bring the exchanges into line with one another. Still , it's totally nuts that arbitragers haven't brought the interexchange rates into sync by now.

This sound spot on. And great explanation, by the way. Thanks Wink

Well, six months ago 68% of the coins were already mined.  Why wasn't the price ~$340 back then?

Didn't investor know then that, within six months, 70% of the coins would be mined?

Easy, because everyone wants to buy "at the bottom", so the bottom comes and sits there for an entire year while they look at the screen and say, "hmm seems pretty stable here, looks like the bottom is in, but I think i'll wait and see if there's a flash crash, then I'll buy some then".  Then the train starts to leave without them and they realize they're a fucking idiot.

That and shorters are good at keeping the price from moving...until they fail and lose everything:

Anyone with a bit of a deeper network and cryptography knowledge care to comment on this technical proposal:

https://bitcoinmagazine.com/articles/bitcoin-ng-or-how-cornell-researchers-think-a-radical-redesign-can-solve-bitcoin-s-scaling-issues-1447108649

Basic idea seems to be to decouple proof of work blocks from transactions blocks (while keeping the two connected, obviously), without the usual trade off that means more tx -> bigger blocks.

Looks plausible to me, and actually a lot less "radical" than, say, turning Bitcoin into a proof-of-stake system. That said, I don't have sufficient technical knowledge to judge if it only appears plausible at a glance or if there's a catch I don't see right now.

(... he asked on the Wall Observer thread, thinking "What could possibly go wrong?")

After the break at 500, it was almost obvious that price will return to mean - 250 or so.

We are not going to stabilize anytime soon with this ongoing level of insane trade volume.
Increased level of bitcoin adoption leads to increased level of trading volume. It is absolutely logical.

No, decreased price of BTC=increased volume.

What is the true value of 1 bitcoin? Nobody knows.

1 full bitcoin (1.0 BTC) is as scarce as 12kg of above ground gold. The price will readjust itself in the long run to reflect this. I'm not saying it will go to the value of 12kg gold, but price has to adjust to accommodate the scarcity factor.

Nice metaphor.

Most gamblers never even come close to breaking even."

The extreme opposite viewpoint is that there is demand for 25BTC/block * 6block/hr * 24hr/day * $320/BTC = $1,152,000 worth of BTC per day. This $1.15 M demand may stay the same across the halving. This would indicate an equal value. In such a case, the new equilibrium price would be $640.

Granted, the truth will likely be somewhere in between.

Of course, I am of the opinion that BTC is drastically undervalued today. But that's just, like, my opinion, man.

No way is the price going to double at the point of the having though. It will climb in the leadup to the halving which will result in more hashing power being brought online which will cause the difficulty to increase. Now, it's possible that the price will climb enough, faster than hashing power is added that there will be enough profit to not encourage miners to switch off and there may be some other factors as well but there's nothing solid.

also what most people don't know is, the current price always contains ALL information currently available. This includes the next reward halving, the current possibility of mass adoption, the current possibility of current total failure etc. etc.

The price does not reflect the current price of something it is always reflects the speculation of future prices which drives it. This is the same for all Forex / Commodities / Stock-Markets...

Halving is just a reason to be a reason to pump&dump BTC just like it happened everytime at the altcoin market / btc / ltc halving in the past.

Well no, not true, the possibility of bitcoin blowing up before the halving is also priced in. As is China banning bitcoins tomorrow, or NSA cracking crypto, or Satoshi coming back and starting dumping his stash etc, etc, etc. This is still a low cap asset so at this stage as we see by high volatility short term events have much greater impact on the price. (Arguably) BTC's future is still uncertain. So everyday that passes where BTC doesn't spontaneously combusts and holds value is another negatively priced event that's chipped off.

If satoshi just moves 1 BTC from his account... even one mili, it could be the apocallipse, the armageddon. The bearist movement of all times. You can count that only will exist 20M bitcoins or none.

That's exactly as rigged as I imagine.
ITS NOT RIGGED!

bitcoin is meant to have manipulators sometimes there are more active manipulators then there are fish, who cares. bitcoin has value because its fun to hit buy/sell with a small 50K, program bots to keep the candle up or down for you.. anything goes, it doesn't make sense to regulate market trader activity; is it illegal to wast 1million dollars to trigger stop loses and sell into them?

fair game to me...

But Lightning bears no resemblance to the Bitcoin I signed up to work on 5 years ago. It's an entirely different design which looks very much like the existing model of banking - nodes that hold people's money (i.e. may end up regulated), route it between them, no support for smart contracts, byzantine complexity due to being built on a 'legacy' layer that wasn't designed for it, occasional settlement between parties etc. Assuming it even works at all.

This type of blowup is so common in open source software that its a bit eye roll inducing. Basically as a project becomes more popular it attracts better talent who eventually start stripping out the early contributors crappy but working code and shooting down their ideas. They feel unappreciated and claim 'This isn't the ____ that I used to love!!' and then vanish.

Good for him though if they offered him a ton of money for some banking system shit. You can't expect people to just wait around 10+ years hoping bitcoin takes off and they never have to work again. I just hope his project fails miserably  Cool

China breaks up $64 billion underground banking: state media

Chinese authorities have uncovered the country's biggest underground banking case involving transactions totalling more than 410 billion yuan ($64 billion), official media reported, part of a drive to combat illegal capital outflows.

The investigation, which started in September and focused on the costal province of Zhejiang, found that dozens of Hong Kong-registered shell companies forged more than 1.3 million fake transactions to transfer money offshore, the official People's Daily reported on Friday.

China started cracking down on underground banks in April and has so far uncovered more than 170 cases of money laundering and illegal fund transfers, involving more than 800 billion yuan ($125.34 billion). The cases come as capital outflows reach hundreds of billions of dollars, triggering alarm in some circles.

A hundred suspects from eight gangs were detained in the latest case, the official Xinhua News Agency said.

I keep seeing this "stable prices not good for trading" line. Have BTC traders developed a very limited definition of trading that ignores derivatives?

Bitcoin dependent alts like ltc, ppc and nmc are basically the bitcoin derivatives that I've been mostly trading. You don't want to go into more complicated schemes in the market that has strong transparency issues and issues with lack of regulation. That's how you get lured into things that are not useful to you. Keeping it simple and following the current momentum of the market is the most foolproof way of trading crypto.

The point is that current market has no momentum. At all.

A priori they look as pure parasites, but somehow a prioris use to be wrong.

When you ask people about what they don't know, it is a mess. But within the market, there is a selection process where knowledge is rewarded and ignorance is penalized, so the result is not a mere average, but a selection and an aggregation of refined knowledge.

The more you gather knowledgeable people around a problem*, the more you allow them to follow the path they deem the most promising**, the higher the probabilby is that the problem will be resolved in an efficient and creative way.

If BTC appreciation were actually due to Chinese currency controls, we ought to be taking off right now, as you just can't buy physical USD in China this week.

And yet we're not taking off.  Thank your Core Development friends for that.

we're not taking off because china devaluations theory is bunk..

the nasdaq guy likely is totally clueless about the bandwidth problem ..

i hear people all the time talking about how great bitcoin is who don't have a clue about the flaw that is obvious to all of us here in the forum ..

the real reason we are at this price is because the federal govy pumped bitcoin using back channels so they could make a quick profit on the marshal's auction ..

however, now after pumping bitcoin they are faced with the looming bandwidth problem ..

it probably would have been smarter, wiser, better to fix the bandwidth problem BEFORE they PUMPED it ..

I bought at 380 thinking it would only go up, and you know what? I hate being wrong ><

The common traders emotion, "Why does the price always go down after I buy and goes up right after I sell". Well we just need to wait for a little while for the price to push around the $390 mark again.

True, but I see only a lowering trend and it's bothering me a lot  Grin

Unless the blockchain issue gets resolved or some big news that will make everyone to jump back in there's not enough push for the price to recover.

Well if the blockchain issue isn't resolved, btc is dead no? (From what I understood)

when i went into bitcoin "larger scale" price was at $120,-  a few weeks later price went below $70,- at some point. you will get a glimpse of how that feels if price goes down to $275,- or so.  that was 2013. later that same year price went over $1000,-

so.... relax.  Smiley

if you know how much power the network is consuming (about a gigawatt or 1 million kilowatts)
and you know how much power costs ($0.10/kWh)
and you now how many transactions are being processed (~4TPS)
We can figure out how much each transaction really costs unsubsidized by speculators.

@ $0.10/kWh X (1,000,000 kilowatts)= $100,000/hr

4 transactions/sec X (3600seconds/hr) = 14,400 transactions/hr

$100,000/14400 transactions = $6.94 PER TRANSACTION

Feel free to check my math, but that's about how efficient the bitcoin network is currently at maximum capacity. If there are fewer transactions, it is even less efficient.  Security and decentralization are very important factors, but this is not competitive with ACH and SWIFT, or even credit cards.  The way to increase efficiency is by massively increasing the number of transactions while keeping the total power costs almost the same.

THAT is why we want to lift the blocksize limit.  We have a very very expensive, inefficient network. Security is great, but too much armor on your armored truck will limit it's cargo capacity.

I don't necessarily disagree with you that there will be people that want more than 21m coins.

An argument like that will never be presented "we want more coins and high inflation for the lolz".

It will be presented as "we want cheap txs".... Arguments like "People want cheap txs, who are you to stop that".... Populist bullshit like "bigger blocks" and the "dangers" of "fullblockalypse".

There is no comparison between a hard fork to raise the blocksize and a hard fork to increase the 21 milion cap on supply. The former is a minor property that almost everyone agrees will need to be changed at some point. I owned Bitcoins for years before I even know there was a max blocksize.  I knew of the 21 MM limit before I bought my first coin.

A slippery slope argument is a logical fallacy.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slippery_slope

Dude increasing the 21 M limit and increasing the block size is the same thing.

Maid, monero and eth. I transfered 10% of my holdings to polo, but finally I decided to wait for retracements. Wrong, today all them are between +10 and +24%

The ecosystem was always right on track for a new bubble. Despite my expectation, it just won't happen in Bitcoin. I am expecting the ecosystem to be worth 45+ billion at the years end. Bitcoin may be worth 5 to 15 billion then.

We will see winners and losers. There will be drama ahead.

I pretty much agree with your views. I will also see LTC falling steadily into oblivion, the trend seems solid. Of the new coins what are your faves?

Let me paraphrase what you really meant to say in your above post.

"I'm here posting in the BTC/USD wall observer thread in order to wank off regarding my lil alt coin friend."

 Roll Eyes Roll Eyes    Tongue

eh,lol   dunoo wot u talkin about m8.
Ok i mean...if someone wants alot of btc and market isnt dumpin...lets get them to trade for a coin thats been pumped x12 in 2months, and then dump on them too take at least half the BTC of them...alot of strong handed BTC players have been buyin another coin at its ath..those guys maybe in for a rude awaking.
Also this core/classic/seg/blkstream blah blah might do nothing at all and the BTC halving kicks in...
Finally i firmly believe BTC will have another ATH before halving.

Mostly agree but the ATH before halving sounds kind of optimistic, dont you think?. It not that I wouldnīt love that, but I cant see it happening currently

It would be interesting to see a trading volume comparison (and liquidity comparison) of the NOV 2013 bubble verse this recent run up...

If I had to guess, the increased liquidity makes it a bit more difficult to crash/"manipulate" the market today, in an attempt to induce panic and profit off a quick move.  For example, imagine someone attempting to do that via market sell on, say, Bitfinex.  That might have worked quite will in Nov 2013, since practically only Mt Gox would need follow suit.  If it did follow suit, mad profits on the 40% panic dumps   I imagine it's far more difficult today, given the distribution of liquidity across so many licensed exchanges.  And the rise of heavy future markets (okcoin, etc.).  And, of course, false signal breakouts, one could argue, are somewhat less likely, since most traders are watching technicals on many exchanges and using that to paint a more complete picture.  For example, Huobi would generally not breakout if US exchanges were going in a different direction or overly stagnant.  Why?  Huobi traders are "aware" that they don't control the market, and that it's far more distributed today.  They could control the market in 2013.

It's certainly a very different market than it was 3 years ago (or even a year ago, for that matter).  I see a lot of the same anxieties, and traders would by wise to acknowledge the dynamic nature of these markets.  This is an entire emerging asset class (crypto-currencies).  With increased participation and liquidity, the same "tricks" that may have worked years ago may be far more difficult, or damn near impossible, today.  Many traders are trading Bitcoin too much, or too actively, for today's market.  They're reading signals left and right, over short time intervals, when it's just noise and, statistically speaking, meaningless.  Meaningless on the adrenaline pumping time scales many look at (5m charts, lol).  And, by extension, meaningless over the mid/long term.

Great analisys, let the noise continue...

How could it be that the pump is already over?

People aren't satisfied with this. Miners shouldn't be satisfied with this. This way most people who invested in mining companies are gonna lose hard, they won't allow that, right? The profit ASIC manufactorers made could be invested into bitcoins, the profit mining companies made the last year, could be invested in Bitcoin below a certain price.

Its just a weakhands shakeout. Also a clearing of too much longs. Itīs the healthier possible thing before the real bubble. Or even better, no bubble, just common sense, slow pace correction to 3-5k which is the minimum minimorum real price of one coin.

True price should be around 5-15k at least. Just relax, let things take its place and enjoy the following months

A few thing people here don't seem to understand:

Most buying is done off exchanges and OTC. By a wide margin too.

China is not leading this market.

No fee Chinese exchanges are being used to "control" the market, because bots are linked and people think China is leading the market.

Bitfinex is linked to Chinese exchanges to provide liquidity. Just like when BFX was linked to Stamp. That is why some full orderbooks are not shown. When a large drop occurs on Chinese exchanges the volume stays within the range, while Bitfinex drops with larger volume than normal. This is a combination of bot manipulation and Bitfinex offering liquidity.

The rise to nearly 800 was one entity, the OTC sellers and buyers waited until this entity was done and then plopped up over 25K BTC in ask walls, now it's up to 35K. The 35K BTC is a mix of real coins and borrowed coins for sale. You can see this by looking at the full order book, you notice the amounts for sale at XXX.37 repeatedly at every dollar interval? There are other patterns you will see as well.

The OTC buyers put sell pressure on BFX to keep the price down, so their OTC purchase will save them millions, by only making people who look at exchanges think we aren't mooning yet. Without their "fake" sell pressure we would be at ATH.

OTC firms do not care about this "manipulation" because they get a percentage in BTC and know that they will sell much more BTC OTC when the price is reasonable and not mooning. OTC firms might also be in on the fake sell pressure.

My guess is currently someone wants to buy OTC in the $650 range, or an OTC firm is seeing an influx of customers and is easier to just have stable prices for everyone Brexiting or running from their fiat market.

The Bitfinex "malfunction" was deliberate. Using statements from above you can see that dropping the Chinese exchanges prices are easy, causing all the longs on BFX to be force liquidated. Well guess who bought up all those coins that were liquidated while also putting the price back in their range? BFX has a ton of fees in BTC to sell, and guess how they do it? That's right, mostly OTC. And if a buyer says "no way I'm paying $700+ for those coins when the price has only been at this level for a week", then BFX has only one thing to do, bring the price back down in the OTC range.

Long term holders like myself, 4+ years, know this is going on and don't really care about exchange rates YET, because one day millions of small buyers who will only use exchanges will overpower any manipulation put forth by OTC markets and online exchanges.

Post of the month. Great way to start a new avatar

I'm currently working on an application that in a nutshell, generates trading strategies, back-tests them, and uses the best strategies to auto trade cryptocurrencies (currently BTC and ETH). Right now the "trade bot" portion only paper trades against a particular exchange, but sends me email notifications on trade entry and exits so I can review and manually enter the trade if I so desire. I monitor multiple time periods for each cryptocurrency, and although it's only been running live for about a week, things look very promising thus far. For example here is my last trade pair:

Wed, Jul 13, 2016 at 12:54 AM ETH BUY at 10.46002995
Fri, Jul 15, 2016 at 4:54 AM ETH  SELL at 12.17

which I executed with real money and made a nice profit. It's a bit too early to make retirement plans but I'm definitely excited.

Very intradesting. What language did you use?. Could you use it with, say, monero/btc?

how about this theory: nlc is one of trollfi's alter egos and izablabla kaminzky is his daughter and helps him trolling the btc community?! Lips sealed

Edit: i forgot to add my explanation why he does this..
satoshi gave him alot of btc in 2009 for promotion reasons, he then sold them all when the price hit 10$ the first time. 10k bucks profit and he was glad that he got out before the 'bubble' burst. after seeing the price hit 250$ he thought "damn, maybe i was wrong after all. i will just buy back in with all my money".
There was another dump to two digits and he sold at the bottom with a horrible loss of more than 50%. Ever since then he was butthurt and started trolling. His daughter seeing her inheritance had more than halfed also joined in the never ending trollvendetta...
i am sorry for exposing the truth or maybe i am just kidding. who knows?

We're down 19.5% from the $789 top, half a percent from a bear market, and still $500 down from the ATH two and a half years ago. I blame the delayed recovery on Core and the lack of on chain scaling.

ATH was phony GOX price point. Probably would never have made it half that far with a real market. As for current 789 top. You are in a healthy correction in a perpetually growing valuation.

Right now with the halving Bitcoin is in new price discovery mode. I wouldn't be surprised that this current triangle resolves down instead of up. Probably needs to go sub $600 to kick off next big leg up.

Block size is not a concern for BTC because BTC is not a transaction type of currency, it is a store of value currency. Nobody cares if it takes 10 minutes to transact in bitcoin because that has been how long it has taken for confirmation since inception. And nobody that is waiting 10 minutes is buying a cup of coffee.

What is a concern is competition. I think there is a 50% chance that Bitcoin is replaced within a year with a higher valuation currency. Bitcoin is currently one alt-bubble away from being lapped... once that happens chaos will ensue because there will be just too many choices competing for crytpo dollars.

Options

A) do nothing, if coins on exchange or in a 3rd party wallet you are at mercy of the exchange or wallet provider as to what happens
B) move coins to your own wallet or cold storage - choose after the fact which chain you want your coins to move onto
C) cash out to fiat - choose to buy back inn after the fact if you like on whichever chain wins
D) buy a different crypto/ combination of crypto (i.e. Diversify risk)  and wait and see what happens

The only really foolish decision is option A) although many will do this as doing nothing is the easiest thing to do, and what if all forks crash and I can't get my coins to exchange because fees.......also
If many coins leave exchanges without being sold then liquidity falls, vol rises and potentially price does to if buying demand remains constant as coin supply is reduced.

The difficulty thing needs to be kept in mind. It's possible a UASF chain will be painfully slow until it readjusts. I can imagine many people will be on exchanges that have declared they'll host both as otherwise it might be impractical to capitalise on it.

This is the great question... Who mines this chain? You can expect 2 weeks of mostly non blocks findings. The chaos is guaranteed

Bitcoin is absolutely right to have a transparent blockchain, it just lacks the optionally private transactions that Dash has mastered with PrivateSend.  Obfuscate the transactions, not the whole damn blockchain.  Ah well, people will learn.

Please dont compare this shitty scamcoin with Monero.
"it just lacks the optionally private transactions" <- this is a feature not a bug, anonymity by default is a necessity for a anon cryptocurrency.

Anyone calling Dash a "scam" nowadays only displays wilful ignorance.  If you'd like to educate yourself please come over to the Dash ANN thread, otherwise please keep your libellous remarks to yourself.

I assume from the lack of response regarding Kraken that they haven't released any statement as yet?

Well, Dash has a ninjamine that borders in the scam zone, depending on where you want to draw the lines. The masternodes are a point of fragility and the trasactions are easily traceable. I said it was cheesy, not a plain scam. Dash is way better at the PR department. They have art selling it to the uneducated people, thatīs his strong point and his curse

looks like finex will credit bch  [bcc] using "socialized distribution coefficient"

Quote
Bitcoin Cash (BCH) Token Distribution
July 27, 2017

A minority of Bitcoin miners will be forking on August 1st, 2017 to create a new chain called Bitcoin Cash. The fork does not impact Bitcoin balances, but it creates a new token. At the time of the fork, all Bitcoin addresses holding a balance will automatically have equivalent balances in Bitcoin Cash.

There has been a variety of responses by the community about how to handle this new token. After a significant show of interest from our customers, we have decided to take steps to facilitate the distribution of Bitcoin Cash balances to those holding a settled Bitcoin balance on Bitfinex. We may also list markets for this new token, but that decision will be made after the fork event.

Although we see this token referred to as BCC on other platforms, unfortunately, that ticker symbol is already in use on our platform by the chain-split token representing Bitcoin Core. As such, we plan to use BCH as the ticker symbol and “Bcash” as the descriptive name to avoid confusion with Bitcoin.

Although several months ago, we developed a methodology for handling contentious hardforks, we will be applying a different methodology for what we regard as a spurious forking of the Bitcoin project with little mining support. Although we have not supported such Bitcoin UTXO-based distributions in the past (Stellar Lumens, Clams, etc.), we will support the distribution of Bitcoin Cash due to significant customer interest.

Distribution Policy

BCH will be distributed to settled bitcoin wallet balances as of the UTC timestamp of the first forking block, which is expected to occur on August 1st, 2017.

The token distribution methodology will be:

All BTC wallet balances will receive BCH
Margin longs in BTC/USD and margin shorts in XXX/BTC will not receive BCH
Margin shorts in BTC/USD and margin longs in XXX/BTC will not pay BCH
    BTC Lenders will receive BCH

Due to the net amount of BTC committed in margin positions at the time of the fork, the above methodology may result in Bitfinex seeing a surplus or deficit of BCH. As such, we will be resolving this discrepancy in the form of a socialized distribution coefficient. For example, currently, there are more longs than shorts on the platform, causing a distribution coefficient of ~1.091 (Meaning that for each qualifying BTC a user will receive 1.091 BCH). The actual coefficient will be calculated at the moment of the distribution. Please note that if there are more shorts than longs at the fork event, this coefficient will be less than one. This coefficient can be roughly computed from publicly available information from our API (longs & shorts) and the Blockchain (cold storage).

We recognize that this model is not perfect, but given the short time frames imposed upon us, better choices are not available. It would be an undue burden to create negative BCH balances for BTC/USD shorts and XXX/BTC longs. Furthermore, lenders may be locked in for up to 30 days and would be adversely impacted. In the end, we believe that this solution creates the least amount of disruption and facilitates a timely distribution of BCH.

Margin longs who wish to receive BCH should consider either claiming some or all of their position or exchanging and holding BTC collateral in their margin wallet as opposed to other assets. We hope to make withdrawals available soon after the fork, assuming everything is fine with the BCH blockchain.

Once again we want to reassure our customers that your bitcoin is safe and this event will not affect your bitcoin balances, positions, or loans - you will simply be receiving an additional token balance based upon the aforementioned methodology.

Way more professional way of handling it then Bitstamp and Polo. Cheers to them.

Why I am "complaining"? Because I think that when all those arguments about Bitcoin used by criminals are completely erradicated there will be less bumps in the road to moon.

We just need to see how price reacts EVERY SINGLE TIME a dark market, shaddy exchange, etc gets closed.

Another thought. My conspiracy brain is always on. I'm not so sure that these ransomware attacks asking for bitcoin, are truly initiated by "bad guys".

How do we know they aren't being initiated by the Feds, deep statists, or whoever in order to continue their smear campaign against Bitcoin?

How would we in the public know otherwise?

How do we know that BTC-e wasn't framed?

Bingo. A hacker group with two neurons wouldnīt use bitcoin. This has the CIA/NSA whatever firm in every aspect. In fact they were the very creators of the worm, that somehow got "hacked" and released by a cyberterrorist group. How convenient.

Nicola Duke thinks that if the $4400 level is taken out next stop is $7000. I agree. If you take a look at bitcoin's previous ATH it was halfway between a 4.236 and 6.854 Fibonacci extension of the ATH that preceded it. If you look at the Fibonacci extensions in play now $4400 is important resistance and if taken out $7000 is certainly possible. I have never seen a 6.854 extension in bitcoin take note though. masterluc has mentioned even higher targets that you can see in this Fibonacci extension chart:

These higher targets are low probability though. There is a distinct possibility that the current bitcoin rally can run out of steam between $4400 and $7000 and we would then enter a multi-year bear market. You really want to be mostly out of bitcoin before the next bear market which will be painful. Start taking some profits now. However, there is also a rule to live by: never sell all your bitcoin.

cryptosphere lol.
guess you mean alternative cryptocurrencies.
no one in cryptography has actually researched cryptonight algorithm.
it might be ok or not, but nobody knows, because nobody solid or respected in the 'cryptoshere' has bothered to look into it.
there's been lots of research into sha256 and so far so good.

as for fungibility and anonymity, tell me how many bitcoins do I own? there's no evidence for this.
and would Overstock accept a bitcoin if I sent it to them any less than the next guy's coin?
they aren't blacklisted yet, people can fudge their ip addresses, fluffypony is nice. but dim.

I believe in BTC and hodl it, but thereīs use cases... You know, coinbase for example, has lists of white BTCs , premium (recently minted) and blacklisted BTCs. And that trend will only intensify as time happens and we approach massive use scales.

I donīt know how much BTCs do you hold, but thereīre exchanges and three letter agencies that probably do. If they were interested they could link how much BTC I own too, but they donīt have the slightest idea of how much moneros do I hodl, if any.

Even if the exchange itself tell them how much did I withdrew is imposible for them to know if I keep hodling that or I have smoked it in hookers and pepsi cola.

Regarding cryptonight, thereīs a plus 2 billion bounty for the cracker of the cryptography.

I look to Every page in here from now When a date is picked first iT cannot been taken again ( 1st =1st)
Another .25 btc is rewarded for ho makes best of technical analyse of the time When we strike ATH.... and Why iT happens at that time.....
So This .25 also only to been payed 1 time .... and not 2 times te same explanation.... (1st =1st)
