Hashing straight sha256 into btc, paying 7 btc for a dragonminer, exponential difficulty never breaks even at 0.1$/kwh. And that is the most cost-effective hardware you can buy. Correct me if I err. Those 3600 daily coins cost at least 650 usd to produce unless you build hardware from scratch in bulk.
People who invest in hardware these days very rarely break even. You're much better off just buying coins with that fiat instead.

Even if hardware is free, which it is not, exponentially rising difficulty means it will cost more than $500 in power alone to produce 1 btc this time next year. It would be utterly insane to sell mined coins into the market. You only sell if you have a contractual obligation with a fund. I know miners who do have such obligations. Their customers are not selling those coins at these prices, no sir.
There's some big operations using renewable power now, I've not done the sums but they should be profitable at much lower levels. Imho its the only direction mining can take as electricity costs translate almost directly into profits.
Renewable energy is expensive to generate and the valuable but somewhat perishable ASICs can't be sitting idle when the sun doesn't shine and the wind doesn't blow. I'd like to see the cost calculation of these renewable miners. I highly doubt it makes sense.

But there are some real advantages to owning a solar system, when there's a power outage your pretty much unaffected... hmm that is all i guess.
cleaner for the environment is some what debatable took a lot of energy to build the system, the batteries certainly aren't environmentally friendly...

we have an 'on grid' system and it makes heaps of sense...folks here can't get a system quick enough...power costs have close to doubled in the last 12 months and are set to rise further...we only have six panels but make enough power that our bills are going down. Many are getting 12/15 panels and actually getting credits. But we get more sunshine hours than most
As for the investment, it will take about 6 years to 'pay off' in our example but you also have to remember that it adds considerable value to your property both economically and socially. Most people also report getting a good feeling by doing the right thing environmentally
(but I know most here care little for the environment)Battery systems are a different beast.
Power goes out...play cards, talk to each other, enjoy the lack of 'hum'.
I can see how it would make tons of sense in area where you get a lot of sun and power cost are high.
not sure it makes much sense here in the north.
i'm hoping the tech improves a bit, then i might be incline to set up a small system and help the environment in a small way, getting a good feeling by doing the right thing, is almost as good as BTC profits, almost!

one thing that ive rarely seen come up in solar power conversations is the fact that you are capturing a huge fraction of the solar energy onto the black panel, rather then reflecting it back into the air/space like if it hit water or hit green foliage. Solar Panels effectively act like blacktop pavement in that regard.
MO, the future is wave power and nuclear.
You made me look it up. Solar panels albedo are equal to Earth's average, 0.3, much greater than new or even worn asphalt. I guess this is why it rarely comes up in solar power conversations.
Also, are you thinking of putting solar panels on water?

You need to realize: Bitcoin is going to fall unless there will be more people interested in buying them. And trust me, a person who gets to bitcointalk.org to get some info, and decide whether to invest or no, and actually starts to read this thread as the most popular one, and dedicated to discussion about the price, etc. and starts to read a zoology treaty will consider all this a big joke.
Do you think if an investor would have some interest in the stock market, on a specific company, and when trying to get more information about his potential investment would start to read all this rubbish, will NEVER invest. Some computer geeks who think they are business men, or who never actually leave their rooms, are being "smart" here... in a business you need to be serious first of all, and bulls and bears have nothing to do with Bitcoins as an investment.
The other problem is that altcoins are falling down. They were the ticket for late investors to adopt Bitcoin. So, there is a very very strong relationship between those and BTC. I always told, the minute altcoins will die, BTC will too. Simply because nobody is going to pay hard cash at this prices for something where the "insiders" are talking about bears and bulls, instead of serious matters in a serious language.
right! ~ bitcoin started out as this underground currency, now you have all these characters trying sooo hard to turn it into a stock market hedgefund plaything. It was not designed for this, it is acting like any other risky stock at this point in the game!!! lollll =)

Lets face it guys we're a bit fucked. The bottom line is that all money in Bitcoin eventually needs to move through the exchanges and people aren't willing to trust the exchanges. So all that BTC thats gone may affect the price upwards in the uber long term due to lack of supply, but if there isn't a safe way to express demand, supply matters not. We'll recover but this might be another 2 year ride (no guarantees, but it seems like a real possibility). I sat through one I can sit through another though, I guess.
Cheer up people. Take a look at this chart from the "other TA" thread and realize that we are in such a great position right now. The trendline is almost freakishly identical to the trend from 2010 -2011 to the trend we are on now from 2013 till now. If it stays on the same path we are looking at $10,000 or even more easily on the next rise in price.

There's nothing wrong with being greedy. There's something very wrong with stacking the deck and playing a rigged game like Wall Street does. Bitcoin is as free market as it gets. The risks and opportunities are much greater. No Bernanke put. No high frequency front-running. No government bail-outs.
Wall street is full of suckers and sharks. Bitcoin is full of minnows and whales. Degenerate gamblers are found everywhere.

Through the last week I have been buying in the 450-520 range (first time buyer). I am all in and prepared to throw more of my monies at BTC in a few days if we don't run into an upswing by then. I have been lurking for a month, many thanks to those whom contribute their knowledge to the thread. I will be keeping my mouth shut around here until I learn the ropes a little more.

This is what I was saying weeks ago - Bitcoin's street price will never go below 400. You will not now, not ever, be able to actually buy them as many as you want, safely, at that price or lower. When we go down on big volume and up on small volume, its just whales setting the price up for the next dump. When we go up on volume, whales aren't going to dump but are going to wait for the run to go as far as it can before we sell.
This indicated the November climb in October, and the 2013 spring rally almost 2 months ahead.
These early warnings are things we need in the US especially because we have no real exchange and it takes so long to move fiat money around unless you are rippling it.

When you first started to post , you were only skeptical but you gave reasons.

TERA, very interesting. So it means that currently resistance is $678 and support $566? I think we also have a smaller resistance now at ~$650, which coincides with sMA 200 and the neckline from recent triple top.
If you draw the bottom at $340, then you have support at $530 and resistance at $650. If you draw the bottom at $380, then you have support at $560 and resistance at $675. I'm not sure which one to use.
Based just on market observation, seems we have resistance both at $650 and $676. I wish I knew where the support is.

Rather than this suggesting Stamp's insolvency/Goxxery, it suggests that Stamp has temporarily become the go-to exchange for cashing out coins. I don't think it says anything about their solvency, insolvency would normally cause people to get their coins out asap which would have the opposite effect. The explanation that its the go to cash out place could hold but why all of a sudden ? Somethings definitely brewing, would have thought someone would be arbing the gap as its been pretty constant.
Lack of people's memory can be astounding sometimes... Bitstamp has been the "cashing out" exchange since time immemorial. It has also been "the bearish exchange" since, forever. "Bearstamp" is not a term coined recently.
You're right: it's interesting to wonder what causes the renewed selling pressure/"cashing out" event currently (maybe insider knowledge from Chinese traders? I don't expect it, but it's possible). But in either case, the price gap in the current form is not a problem at all: if you want to liquidate coins in volume and get your money out fast and reliably (and you don't mind a bit of KYC anal probing
), then Bitstamp has been the exchange to do so since more than a year now.

I would think that anyone who knows a little about how the U. S. Government works would have guessed quite accurately when and how the auction would take place. They must dispose of any property that they seize according to the law. They had neither the choice nor the motivation to keep the coins, trade with them, or sell them in a private deal.

The USMS does hire private companies to do part of the work in some cases; e.g. they may hand over seized cars to a private car storage company for safekeeping, and interested bidders will inspect them there. I am not sure, but think that they may even hire a private company to run the whole auction. (Perhaps for art works, jewelry, etc?)
But they would have to run a bidding process anyway to select the auctioning company, and write a complicated contract with them. In the case of bitcoins, the total hassle and paperwork would be much higher than directly auctioning the bitcoins by sealed-bid (which is a well-tested routine for them).

Regarding silk road coins, if you had around $1.809.000 and bough BTC for it, would you sell them straight away? I don't think so. Anyone buying those coins will be longterm holders.
I have this notion (please correct me) that government auctions of other kinds of property, such as cars and houses, generally are closed well below the respective market prices.
It seems that the people who bid at government auctions usually include "professionals" who buy only to resell. Those people place bids significantly below market price; if there are no higher bidders, they have made their day; otherwise they just retrieve their deposit and move on to the next auction. People who are not "professionals" tend to be scared away by the bureaucratic requirements and the large deposit.
Since there will be some delay between sending the payment and receiving the coins, the bidders will also have to factor into their bids the likelihood of the market price falling in that interval and then taking months to recover.
In summary, it is by no means assured that the auction will close above market. I rather expect the opposite.
The limited buyer group tends to insure that auctions go below market.
Unless these coins are more valuable than others.
The bigger the buying audience, the better the auction pricing and closer to market.

Over time, the coins do get concentrated in the hands of a few smart people.
