Inspirational Buy All the Bitcoins Speech

Sons of the internet, I am AdamStgBit, and I see a whole army of my countrymen here in defiance of closed source centralized systems, you've come here to buy and sell on the free market, and a free men you are ( expect for Jorge, sadly...). What will you do without FREEDOM!?? WILL YOU BUY!?

"No! No! we will sell and/or hope for lower prices, if not, least we'll have some fiat, to pay the bills"

Ya ok, buy now and you might lose, sell now and you'll have some fiat to pay the bills.

At least a while...

And drowning in debt many years from now, would you be willing to trade all the days from this day to that, for once chance, just one chance! to come back here and tell the bankers that they may take our mortgage payment directly out of our accounts without asking, and even take the house after taking all our money, but they'll never take our BITCOINS!!!

At 600 it's hoooly shit omg panic sell because of a maybe ban by China. At 500 it's np to own coins. Ban or not.
Now we have to wait for the next rumour or fake tweet and people will repeat the same ritual and we'll be at 400 and the idiot bears here will be crying how we need to hit 300 because of cheap coins. Or because they missed their waaaay too low buy order.
People are complete idiots.
I ask again. What will make these bears and panic sellers happy? 1 dollar coins? Because right now that's is exactly what you idiots are trying to achieve with this behaviour.

Yes i just woke up and i'm grumpy as hell.

Hashing straight sha256 into btc, paying 7 btc for a dragonminer, exponential difficulty never breaks even  at 0.1$/kwh.  And that is the most cost-effective hardware you can buy.  Correct me if I err.  Those 3600 daily coins cost at least 650 usd to produce unless you build hardware from scratch in bulk.

People who invest in hardware these days very rarely break even.  You're much better off just buying coins with that fiat instead.

^the 2014 ASIC machine "gold rush" is the top driving force behind bitcoins' value right now~imho =)

unless I am a large scale ASIC producer.
...
I could dump all the coins I produce and make really fast and big profits.

Even if hardware is free, which it is not, exponentially rising difficulty means it will cost more than $500 in power alone to produce 1 btc this time next year.  It would be utterly insane to sell mined coins into the market.  You only sell if you have a contractual obligation with a fund.  I know miners who do have such obligations.  Their customers are not selling those coins at these prices, no sir.
There's some big operations using renewable power now, I've not done the sums but they should be profitable at much lower levels. Imho its the only direction mining can take as electricity costs translate almost directly into profits.

Renewable energy is expensive to generate and the valuable but somewhat perishable ASICs can't be sitting idle when the sun doesn't shine and the wind doesn't blow. I'd like to see the cost calculation of these renewable miners. I highly doubt it makes sense.

i've been looking into solar for fun
and it seems to me pretty much any size system will take about 10years to pay itself off
It almost makes more sense to buy into some guaranteed 1-3% investments...
But there are some real advantages to owning a solar system, when there's a power outage your pretty much unaffected... hmm that is all i guess.
cleaner for the environment is some what debatable took a lot of energy to build the system, the batteries certainly aren't environmentally friendly...
pretty sure solar doesn't make much sense.

we have an 'on grid' system and it makes heaps of sense...folks here can't get a system quick enough...power costs have close to doubled in the last 12 months and are set to rise further...we only have six panels but make enough power that our bills are going down.  Many are getting 12/15 panels and actually getting credits. But we get more sunshine hours than most Smiley

As for the investment, it will take about 6 years to 'pay off' in our example but you also have to remember that it adds considerable value to your property both economically and socially.  Most people also report getting a good feeling by doing the right thing environmentally (but I know most here care little for the environment)

Battery systems are a different beast.
Power goes out...play cards, talk to each other, enjoy the lack of 'hum'.

I can see how it would make tons of sense in area where you get a lot of sun and power cost are high.
not sure it makes much sense here in the north.
i'm hoping the tech improves a bit, then i might be incline to set up a small system and help the environment in a small way, getting a good feeling by doing the right thing, is almost as good as BTC profits, almost! Cheesy

one thing that ive rarely seen come up in solar power conversations is the fact that you are capturing a huge fraction of the solar energy onto the black panel, rather then reflecting it back into the air/space like if it hit water or hit green foliage. Solar Panels effectively act like blacktop pavement in that regard.

MO, the future is wave power and nuclear.
You made me look it up. Solar panels albedo are equal to Earth's average, 0.3, much greater than new or even worn asphalt. I guess this is why it rarely comes up in solar power conversations.

Also, are you thinking of putting solar panels on water?  Huh

You missed the news: when the descending triangle breaks the third ascending Elliot Wave confirming the exponential trend line corresponding to Mynott's adoption curve then all the institutional money (which has been placed off the exchanges in 'dark orders' with illuminati miners) will enter the market guaranteeing the price to climb to USD$100K.

Guys, you all are a part of the problem... You think that you're so smart, talking about bulls and bears, and a lot of rubbish.

You need to realize: Bitcoin is going to fall unless there will be more people interested in buying them. And trust me, a person who gets to bitcointalk.org to get some info, and decide whether to invest or no, and actually starts to read this thread as the most popular one, and dedicated to discussion about the price, etc. and starts to read a zoology treaty will consider all this a big joke.
Do you think if an investor would have some interest in the stock market, on a specific company, and when trying to get more information about his potential investment would start to read all this rubbish, will NEVER invest. Some computer geeks who think they are business men, or who never actually leave their rooms, are being "smart" here... in a business you need to be serious first of all, and bulls and bears have nothing to do with Bitcoins as an investment.

The other problem is that altcoins are falling down. They were the ticket for late investors to adopt Bitcoin. So, there is a very very strong relationship between those and BTC. I always told, the minute altcoins will die, BTC will too. Simply because nobody is going to pay hard cash at this prices for something where the "insiders" are talking about bears and bulls, instead of serious matters in a serious language.

right! ~ bitcoin started out as this underground currency, now you have all these characters trying sooo hard to turn it into a stock market hedgefund plaything. It was not designed for this, it is acting like any other risky stock at this point in the game!!! lollll =)

Then arbitrage potential must be limited, because the loop is closed.

Lets face it guys we're a bit fucked. The bottom line is that all money in Bitcoin eventually needs to move through the exchanges and people aren't willing to trust the exchanges. So all that BTC thats gone may affect the price upwards in the uber long term due to lack of supply, but if there isn't a safe way to express demand, supply matters not. We'll recover but this might be another 2 year ride (no guarantees, but it seems like a real possibility). I sat through one I can sit through another though, I guess.

Cheer up people.  Take a look at this chart from the "other TA" thread and realize that we are in such a great position right now.  The trendline is almost freakishly identical to the trend from 2010 -2011 to the trend we are on now from 2013 till now.  If it stays on the same path we are looking at $10,000 or even more easily on the next rise in price.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=400235.msg6032075#msg6032075

I am not worried just displeased that Pboc is so shadowy with the rulings.. but fiat has it slaves.

April 15th will come and go. The price might not move much before then, or up a little perhaps, but when everyone realizes that Bitcoin isn't going to "zero" things will get interesting once again.

The sheep will find another reason to panic sell after april 15. I'm sure.

Possibility of bitcoin retreating to April 2013 high of $266:  $400 support doesn't hold when all Chinese exchanges stop taking deposits, China bans bitcoin ownership and trading altogether, U.S. stockmarket crash/correction that dries up Silicone Valley money, Coinbase folds, etc. Probability: ~40%

Possibility of trend reversal without whales: 1%. with whales: ~40%

Possibility that Bitcoin goes to $10,000 this year: hyperinflation in the U.S. Dollar, major currency or banking crisis in a large economy with Bitcoin as a major player in evading capital controls or inflation hedging, Google, Facebook, Microsoft or other major tech company fully embraces bitcoin, investing billions. Probability: ~5%.

Possibility of spontaneous mass adoption this year with no major media campaign or sea change in media coverage: zero. Next year, maybe. Movements need leaders.

I'm loaded in BTC and mostly holding, but it could get really really ugly. again.

i want to support the cause, however i've found that this community is at least as greedy as the Wall street bandits~ maybe even worse!!! =O *how many you still got?lolll

There's nothing wrong with being greedy. There's something very wrong with stacking the deck and playing a rigged game like Wall Street does. Bitcoin is as free market as it gets. The risks and opportunities are much greater. No Bernanke put. No high frequency front-running. No government bail-outs.

Wall street is full of suckers and sharks. Bitcoin is full of minnows and whales. Degenerate gamblers are found everywhere.

This is where I am and haven't gotten my first btc yet...waiting on the verification. Scared it'll end up at 900 bucks by Monday or Tuesday when they finally hook me up.  Grin

Curious about something if anyone here might know...I read somewhere in this forum something about the value of btc being coded in the math, that it can always be known how much it will be worth and how it will increase in value due to the code or whatever and that it's coded to increase exponentially. If that's knowable because of the code itself then why all the speculation?

Through the last week I have been buying in the 450-520 range (first time buyer). I am all in and prepared to throw more of my monies at BTC in a few days if we don't run into an upswing by then. I have been lurking for a month, many thanks to those whom contribute their knowledge to the thread. I will be keeping my mouth shut around here until I learn the ropes a little more.

HEY! Noob! Don't get out of line here! The accepted behavior is to immediately start 4 to 5 bullish or bearish FUD threads (depending on whether you sold or bought at the time). Get cracking.

Also, insulting longtime members helps, throw those elbows around

I haven't been on the forum for a number of days and haven't really been following BTC closely.  What's going on?  Why is the price falling?

China banned it again.  Twice.  Also, there's no  future in the whole crypto thing; it turns out to be a ponzi scheme after all.  I'm  just buying a few to help out, for auld lang syne.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?

on a serious note, I'm starting to wonder if bitcoin is the US secret escape plan for getting out of the current currency game.

they are starting to accumulate a large stake through stealing coins from bitcoin innovators like Shrem and Ulbricht.

ya man : if we can just spread the bitcoin on everyones' computers we can monkey around with the chinky accounts and other fun stuff! LOL Wink

Was thinking a few days ago bidding at lower 400's would be a safe, smart play even for bears. i am quickly changing my mind.

I told a guy I know that was interested in bitcoin a week ago that I thought breaking through 400 CAD was unlikely.

I told him again today that I no longer held that view.

I am feeling now that we might go below 400, until the point of maximum pain.

on this journey, simply remember...

Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me.

Something like $150 would be painful.. will it go down quickly or take 3-12 months to get there.  I think that I could hang with $150 if it took a year to get there, but that price point would surely weed out quite a few weak hands... and yes, if it took 24 months to get there, then probably some pretty negative news would need to be in play.....

I pretty much havent changed my position for quite a while. Until we see maximum pain, i think it'll continue to tumble.

This market is hell-bent on shaking out the bagholders and lottery-ticket types. 275-350 would do the trick, imo. Then, i'll turn bullish when i see some major volume buying.

your first prediction of flash crash to 400 was right but your second prediction on the reversal was and is wrong, you have been calling a reversal from 550 all the way down to $400, sadly we broke that 400.

now there is 2 scary facts, China is really closing accounts on the 15th of April and this is confirmed, now Australia will be closing all Bitcoin business related accounts on the 2nd of may; now  it is unclear for me how there is a chance of a reversal !! till then, I don't know if we reached the bottom yet...

My approach to predictions: If I make a 50/50 prediction, I aim to be "right" exactly 50% of the time. If I make 70/30 (that was perhaps my feeling after the Feb-25 crash) I still need to be "wrong" every third time, otherwise I am playing too safe. If you don't understand this, better not listen to me at all.

Rational investors discount the future to the present, and all information commonly available is already priced in. Now, Bitcoin is very far from an efficient market, and therefore there is a mispricing going on. I am moving funds to exchange if nothing else helps to correct/profit from the situation. I think this is the biggest reason why the reversal/recovery is sluggish: whales like me are scared as hell to send the million$ back to exchanges, no matter if they were originally earned by selling bitcoins or if it is new money. It is the shadow of Gox again.

Please somebody sell me bitcoins at $389, off-exchange, BTC100 minimum. Please.

Yeah.

This is what I was saying weeks ago - Bitcoin's street price will never go below 400. You will not now, not ever, be able to actually buy them as many as you want, safely, at that price or lower. Only by wiring to these exchanges and taking huge haircuts every once in a while, you are able to gamble if you can get any coins. Not currently a very bright situation but just in case someone wants to prove me wrong, the address is there.

PS. No need to reply, punk. A full bitcoin is something that you dream of.

SHOW ME THE MONEY YOU SCAMMER!!!!

like i said you are totally full of shit ! I have as many bitcoins you want to buy @ $389 ! You don't remember me pushing the price over $500 via the Wall Street "usual suspects" you said you would sell me coins for $700 and when the time came you ignored me!!! Now how many you want to buy? Yeah.. what if each person wants to do the deal.  $389 for 100 BTC?

I would NOT want to deal with someone like BBmodBB.  He seems pretty shady...    But, if I can be assured that my deal is going to be honored, then I have NO problem dealing with anyone... even if they were to call me names... ...   as long as they have what I want, and the deal goes through without major drama.

So in that regard, I figure out how to send my $38,900, and I want him to give me the 100BTC.  It almost seems necessary to involve a third party in these circumstances.. I certainly would NOT want to meet in person... when someone is acting like a jerk.. unless maybe there is some assurances.... or do you have a mechanism to hold these in escrow... ?

How do you distinguish between distribution and accumulation?

http://stockcharts.com/school/doku.php?id=chart_school:technical_indicators:accumulation_distrib

It is a volume weighted metric.
Volume manipulation is much more expensive to accomplish than price manipulation (except on exchanges where the transactions are free).
It tends to be a much more reliable indication of trend reversals than price, when the preponderance of trade volume is on up time rather than down time.
When we go down on big volume and up on small volume, its just whales setting the price up for the next dump.  When we go up on volume, whales aren't going to dump but are going to wait for the run to go as far as it can before we sell.
This indicated the November climb in October, and the 2013 spring rally almost 2 months ahead.
These early warnings are things we need in the US especially because we have no real exchange and it takes so long to move fiat money around unless you are rippling it.

Don't have to.  It's obviously suicidally seeking an undead existence:  The concentration of mining means concentration of consensus, which means centralized currency, centralized planning and control, which means we're a dead man walking; unless there's dramatic action taken, it won't be long before bitcoin is a zombie, an unnatural hollow shell of its former self.  Bitcoin as a currency will continue to function, but the bitcoin idea, the ghost in its machine, will no longer be attached to the currency.  It's also not clear how even dramatic action is capable of preventing this outcome.  Moving mining to sidechains with smaller faster block rewards is the best I can come up with, and it's not at all clear that's enough, nor even that the will to do that exists.

There's no particular reason to think this condition will affect price in the near term, however.

What concentration? I really don't see it. The vast majority of hashrate is individual miners in pools and they can switch pools whenever they feel like it. The industrialization of mining will not mean any further centralization other than possible near misses at certain times throughout the early adoption cycle. Asicminer had 30% plus of the hashrate briefly but lost that status and even with Gen 3 will likely not come close to that again with a projected 1600Ph/s

^fwiw--i'm back to mining BTC with 33GH/s ;-)

Everything changed and at moments you even seem angry at every good news or development as if it was hurting you.
I did change my signature from "rather skeptical" to "very skeptical" and stated some of the reasons here, buried somewhere in the past 2000 pages or so.   I won't go through them again, it would only trigger the same nasty responses.

I don't like zealots nor the ones believing in the bitpocalypse.
If you care to know, for me the probability of bitcoin (THIS bitcoin) succeeding is positive but rather small; if it fails, I have no idea how long that ill take, and how the price will evolve until then.

Jorge, it is so painfully obvious that you operate under some seriously constrictive, empirically unsustainable assumptions about markets in general and price discovery in particular that it'd be pointless to discuss this topic with you.
Well, please write for the other readers then.  "Never underestimate the pleasure people feel when being told something that they already know."  Cheesy (That was Fermi's IIRC.)

Convince yourself of the unlikeliness of (at least the strong forms of) the EMH, or worse, the RWH, and we talk Cheesy
I don't believe in the EMH (and can't even imagine how it could be applied to an insubstantial asset like bitcoin).

Also I do not believe that price is a random process (certainly not for large-scale motions like these).  The large drops in the past, and most of the rallies, all had obvious external causes.  The Brownian model (with variable variance) is merely the only "technical analysis" model (i.e. model that does not have external factors as inputs) that seems to be validated in practice.  Which means that, indeed, I do not see any reason to believe in TA.

That is always the big topic, fundamentals or TA.
I agree that price movements are mainly driven by fundamentals, be it big events or slow developments.

However; technical analysis becomes true, but only for a short time, when enough market players are all using the same model!

When the dollar finally has its crashing part, these times will look like cheap times.
Argentina just got an exchange. A shit storm is a brewin...

Most of btc's early adopters are truth and liberty seeking folks.
Give them more credit...
Lol, do you really believe in this freedom and liberty shit?
Bitcoins were created by some very smart people, who most probably are controlling it right now. Who is using bitcoins in real life? Nobody. It is just an artificial medium for  cash laundry, for selling some useless hardware (miners) for very high price.
Many drug  and paedophile dealers are really pleased to have something like bitcoin, so they can do their stuff totally undercover.
That is it. Any mentally  healthy  person would build his business on BTC, any smart person will invest money in BTC  because it is controlled by few people, and you never know what will happen tomorrow: will they pump it? Or maybe sell everything and wave you bye bye?

Not even sure that the small errors in the physic models are needed. The beauty of René Thom"s chaos theory is that the non-determinism lies deep within the maths.

As an example, even if you know very precisely the speed and the position of the solar's system planets, and the external perturbations, you just can't do the maths, the 3-bodies equations are already too complicated to be solved. And which planet will be ejected from the solar system is still a mystery.

You don't need to solve the equations though. In a deterministic universe, if you know precisely the starting conditions, you could run a simulation and get the prediction. Chaos theory says that small perturbations in the starting conditions can lead to vastly different outcomes. Quantum physics says small perturbations are intrinsic. Even with two initially identical systems, things will occur in one which will not in the other.

But to run a simulation you need to be able to solve the 3-body equations... Unless you're running some sort of simplified heuristic simulation, in which case it could never be absolutely deterministic anyway.

You have to distinguish practical predictability from theoretical predictability. Chaos theory (as well as the difficulty in solving 3-body equations and such) make the universe practically unpredictable. Quantum theory (and only quantum theory) make the universe theoretically unpredictable.

predictable or probabilistic?  ;-)

mmm ... it's a very interesting thought, thank you.

I still think there is something beyond consciousness, perhaps sub-conscious or super-conscious, that dominates our existence.

or rather, something outside our understanding of this reality that we are constantly in communication with, yet completely unaware of.

You guys still going on with that 'nondeterministic universe', 'free will' discussion... I have this amusing idea (well, it kind of amuses me, so I got that goin' for me, which is nice) that allows me to reconcile my belief in free will without having to resort to paradoxical hocus pocus (if deterministic and causal, then not really all that free of a will, if not deteministic and causal, how is my free will different from randomness), and it goes like this: the human mind will after all turn out to be computable (bad choice of words, given my next statement. say: formalizable): "no free will". Tough shit though, deterministic simulations of the mind will be shown to be undecidable: there's my "free will".

Yes.  We know the universe is universal (Turing complete) and that how the future unfolds is undecidable.  So it makes no difference from a practical point of view whether or not the universe is deterministic.  In either case, the only way to determine the future is to wait for it to happen.

I remember the thread "is it me or bitcoin tends to gravitate towards 666?"

Bitcoin is always == BTC1.

It's the dollar that takes pleasure in staying near 1/666 of BTC. But those days may soon be numbered.

I am willing to say that I am on the edge of being officially bullish on this market.

It looks as if fresh fiat is coming into the bitcoin exchanges.

If this is correct, then 340 was the low and we will be coiling up for a major move sometime before the end of 2014.

The jury is still out on this one, but if we break 680 with ease in the next day or so and continue to rally up and consolidate at highs, then I will expect ATH before <$340

Ask depth to 700 is stacking up. The bigger walls the harder they fall.

Are you really of the opinion that those walls are for real?  Surely some of them may be for real, but they are easily pulled, as well.

the walls are real... if they get pulled the get put back up few bucks higher, or end up coming back as dumps higher up. not a big deal, train is gonna smash right through it either way... and then the walls are going to have a fucking rocket to contend with.

tomorrow should be interesting.

I hate to say it but I wouldn't be surprised to test 650 640 again. ( kinda hoping for it... )

TERA, very interesting. So it means that currently resistance is $678 and support $566? I think we also have a smaller resistance now at ~$650, which coincides with sMA 200 and the neckline from recent triple top.
If you draw the bottom at $340, then you have support at $530 and resistance at $650. If you draw the bottom at $380, then you have support at $560 and resistance at $675. I'm not sure which one to use.

Based just on market observation, seems we have resistance both at $650 and $676. I wish I knew where the support is.

Right. I guess that multi-sig implementation is the best example of how something useful and on which we all agree could be implemented into Bitcoin. Categorical true.

There is no community here except by extension.  Intensionally, that "community" is a bag of conflicting power nexii.  Everyone is there to fulfill their agenda.  For the most part that agenda involves some form of extortion.  You can meaningfully call the people allied to a single power nexus a community, but when the agendas are conflicting its hard two see how those nodes can be seen to be part of a single "community", which traditionally means people who have the common interests of a locale and live together in interactive cooperation, whether perforce or by choice.

Rather than say "anything that is missing" you could say "anything which a critical mass of the most advanced controllers of power constituencies find un-threatening and perhaps personally aggrandizing" can be added to Bitcoin.   In practice that is a very, very small universe of features.  It is a shrinking universe of features.  As market cap grows, and the existential threat to fiat systems starts to hit radar screens around the world, and the number of control points diminishes with increasing centralization, you can be sure that universe will shrink even more rapidly, and the reins that steer it will choose very different directions.

Still no real explanation for Stamps lagging behind ? With the amount of USD longs on Finex I would have thought some people would have panicked and bought them back into line...

Rather than this suggesting Stamp's insolvency/Goxxery, it suggests that Stamp has temporarily become the go-to exchange for cashing out coins. People are buying/trading elsewhere and selling/withdrawing on Stamp. Curious. That suggests somewhere else is experiencing fiat withdrawal issues. Another round of Chinese games to come?
I don't think it says anything about their solvency, insolvency would normally cause people to get their coins out asap which would have the opposite effect. The explanation that its the go to cash out place could hold but why all of a sudden ? Somethings definitely brewing, would have thought someone would be arbing the gap as its been pretty constant.

Lack of people's memory can be astounding sometimes... Bitstamp has been the "cashing out" exchange since time immemorial. It has also been "the bearish exchange" since, forever. "Bearstamp" is not a term coined recently.

You're right: it's interesting to wonder what causes the renewed selling pressure/"cashing out" event currently (maybe insider knowledge from Chinese traders? I don't expect it, but it's possible). But in either case, the price gap in the current form is not a problem at all: if you want to liquidate coins in volume and get your money out fast and reliably (and you don't mind a bit of KYC anal probing Tongue), then Bitstamp has been the exchange to do so since more than a year now.

I would think that anyone who knows a little about how the U. S. Government works would have guessed quite accurately when and how the auction would take place.   They must dispose of any property that they seize according to the law.  They had neither  the choice nor the motivation to keep the coins, trade with them, or sell them in a private deal.

Couldn't they just "destroy" them, as they do for illegal stuff like drugs ? (send them to a random address and not store the private key)

The fact that they sell them instead of destroying them has a strong meaning.

^the guvnment destroying drugs? *thats news to me! LOL =)

A curiosity question for those who believe in TA (which I still don't, sorry): are its rules symmetrical with respect to up and down? Namely, if a certain pattern is supposed to impliy This and That, is the same pattern, but upside down, supposed to imply the opposite of This and That?

(I am asking because I recently edited the Wikipedia article on 'cup and handle' (wait, no need to panic yet  Grin!), and it only discusses the 'upside-up' version, no mention of an 'upside-down' one.  But wasn't a reversed cup and handle mentioned in this thread, some time ago? Or maybe it was some other upside-down pattern?)

TA is not binary, also charting should always be reenforced by other real-time data : level 2 quotes etc...! ;-)

Which would place touching the previous ATH into late Q3/early Q4 2014, and actually making a new one into 2015.

I'm okay with that, matches my own (fuzzy, LT) ideas pretty well, but this is probably a hard sell  to the salivating bulls that want to break $1000 in 2 weeks from now.

As much as I'd like to see a rally in 2014, I'm secretly hoping for one in early 2015 instead.  Reason being, a) I plan to sell some and for tax purposes would like that to happen after Jan 1st 2015 so I don't have to report any gains until 2016, and b) because I think the rally will go much higher the longer it holds off.

If you are a U.S. resident, you could move coins into a Roth vehicle, up to about 50k USD in value per year.  Then you could actually hold them offshore, and have no tax reporting obligations, no FATCA or FBAR reporting, and no tax liability regardless of reporting.  Note that I am not a tax attorney and this is not legal advice.

It bears repeating that if we do not make an ATH before an ETP gets listed, the next hype cycle may be a 50x-100x supercycle.

So why don't they just sell them on ebay?  All of those costs have already been paid, by someone else.
The USMS does hire private companies to do part of the work in some cases; e.g. they may hand over seized cars to a  private car storage company for safekeeping, and interested bidders will inspect them there.  I am not sure, but think that they may even hire a private company to run the whole auction. (Perhaps for art works, jewelry, etc?)

But they would have to run a bidding process anyway to select the auctioning company, and write a complicated contract with them.  In the case of bitcoins, the total hassle and paperwork would be much higher than directly auctioning the bitcoins by sealed-bid (which is a well-tested routine for them).

Regarding silk road coins, if you had around $1.809.000 and bough BTC for it, would you sell them straight away? I don't think so. Anyone buying those coins will be longterm holders.
I have this notion (please correct me) that government auctions of other kinds of property, such as cars and houses, generally are closed well below the respective market prices.

It seems that the people who bid at government auctions usually include "professionals" who buy only to resell.  Those people place bids significantly below market price; if there are no higher bidders, they have made their day; otherwise they just retrieve their deposit and move on to the next auction.  People who are not "professionals" tend to be scared away by the bureaucratic requirements and the large deposit.

Since there will be some delay between sending the payment and receiving the coins, the bidders will also have to factor into their bids the likelihood of the market price falling in that interval and then taking months to recover.

In summary, it is by no means assured that the auction will close above market. I rather expect the opposite.

The limited buyer group tends to insure that auctions go below market.
Unless these coins are more valuable than others.
The bigger the buying audience, the better the auction pricing and closer to market.

It has to be noted that persistent hoarding by these smart people greatly increases the value of everybody else's coins. The market cap of the unhoarded stock grows larger when the hoarded stock grows larger.
