FinCEN Fines Oppenheimer & Co. Inc. $20 Million for Continued Anti-Money Laundering Shortfalls

Suspicious Penny Stock trading and Pump-and-Dump Schemes Not Flagged
and Foreign Correspondent Customer Allowed to Conduct Prohibited Activity

....

From 2008 through May 2014, Oppenheimer conducted business without establishing and
implementing adequate policies, procedures, and internal controls reasonably designed to detect
and report suspicious activity. FinCEN identified 16 customers who engaged in patterns of
suspicious trading through branch offices in five states. All the suspicious activity involved
penny stocks, which typically are low-priced, thinly traded, and highly speculative securities that
can be vulnerable to manipulation by stock promoters and “pump-and-dump” schemes.
Oppenheimer failed to report patterns of activity in which customers deposited large blocks of
unregistered or illiquid penny stocks, moved large volumes of penny stocks among accounts with
no apparent purpose, or immediately liquidated those securities and wired the proceeds out of the
account.
...

Do you think bitcoin exchanges are properly monitoring and reporting such activities?

^ This will be the end of bitcoin altcoins.

the sideways then dump movement over the past few days has been a profitable pattern for shorts. It will continue to work for them, until it no longer works. I think we will know it's over when price is able to recover to levels higher than just before the previous dump. Complacent shorts will get caught when that happens and we could see an up cycle pattern begin anew.

On the positive side, there is one less unknown out there with bit license revision being published. I don't think there will be many more revisions by the end of the 30 day comment period. So, market participants know what to expect now and don't have to price in the uncertainty.

Watching that lower trendline, not sure how much longer it can hold. Below that, support at 210/200/190. Lots of folks thinking we go down, will the market frustrate everyone and just go sideways?

bullshit. If we're going to $255 then we're going to $350, but I think we might be going down first. Time will tell.

Hmmm maybe I was asking for the wrong thing. So:

Short squeeze to 240, consolidate (flag), squeeze again to 255, consolidate. After that more upside would be great. Thanks

If you could tolerate the third party risk, why not just take your cold storage coins and double down by putting them into 1 or 2 YR futures and go long?  If youbelieve long term priceis headed up, you could increase your profit w/oputting additionalcapital at risk. Also a futures market would be a much more accurate gauge on upcoming price movements than the nearly universally terrible technical analysis from Coindesk, cryptocoin news etc.

erm he seems to have hinted in his tweet that Mega would start accepting bitcoin now that his paypal account is frozen. Surely he would have been accumulating at lower levels prior to suggesting this.

It appears to be an obvious bullish pennant on the 1 HR chart.  Can any TA gurus confirm?

Not an expert by any means but I would say it appears to be. It is clearer on the 4h chart. Volume declining towards the apex. This feels like healthy consolidation after the big move up yesterday. RSI has worked off some of the overbought conditions, so that's good.

Finex swaps are still high on both sides, short swaps have declined a bit but USD swaps continue to increase. I take the USD swap count with a grain of salt because they are still below levels seen during most of 2014. And there is still lots of shorts on the books and surely lots of cash on the sidelines.

Not sure if we will get a move out of the flag based on technicals alone, but even some small piece of good news could help nudge a break to the upside. It being weekend and all, who knows. If the flag dissolves into sideways action, the bears may feel emboldened, flash a few sell walls, and try to take us lower with the help of nervous longs. We may see some turbulence up and down as nervous traders set their tight stops and get them hit as bulls and bears battle it out.

I'm kind of hoping we don't see any big action soon because it would be great to have a good night sleep tonight  Cheesy

I think this gives some weight to that mention from the bitcoinmagazine newsletter (posted here and in /r/bitcoin) wherein they suggest that somebody has provided the largest funding ever to an unknown bitcoin startup. Apparently some stealth bitcoin startup is getting more funding than coinbase!

What if somebody like JP Morgan is funding the largest ever bitcoin private sector bitcoin project. JPM is apparently hiring bitcoin talent, maybe they need somebody to help them manage their huge new investment.

And what if this startup is working on something huge, like a bitcoin based replacement for the SWIFT interbank transfers system.

And what if the folks behind the massive runup in USD swaps on finex are perhaps "in the know" on this matter.

What if.

Wondering why this news is so big? The BIT website does a good job of ELI5 this news for you http://www.bitcointrust.co/

Quote
The Bitcoin Investment Trust (BIT) is a private, open-ended trust that is invested exclusively in bitcoin and derives its value solely from the price of bitcoin. It enables investors to gain exposure to the price movement of bitcoin without the challenges of buying, storing, and safekeeping bitcoins.

Quote
the BIT is able to offer a weighted price that reflects a more accurate market view. Investors can buy shares in the BIT at a set price and without having to transact in a fragmented and highly illiquid market with unregulated and newly established entities.

Investors are able to invest in bitcoin via a security, making it eligible for investment for institutions, certain IRAs and other types of brokerage accounts.

And now they are no longer private. ANYONE can buy in now via their OTC fund. Link to WSJ story:

Scary stuff. 2-factor everything people.

Thats a great read.

Before buying my first bitcoin in December of last year I spent probably about three months looking at types of wallets and ways to keep your stash secure. In the end I have opted for the brain/paper wallet methods for my main holding and use online exchanges such as blockchain/coinbase for very small amounts for trading/gambling/purchasing.

I think really security is the BIGGEST problem for most people (even someone like me who is NOT a programmer/hacker but IS very competent on computers) had to really rack my brain with all this security stuff.

Again great read... I am not sure what I would do if I somehow ended up with crazy amounts of bitcoins. I think I would be very paranoid

china never really illegalized BTC and as far I know the auction prices are not public

not mad. Made good money on that. Was expecting "sell the rumor buy the news" on the closing of the auction then got this sudden "buy the rumor" luck bone thrown at us. Just luck.

21 is old news. they are already on the network, mining.

not mining.

Quote
Members of the bitcoin community speculated about a secret vehicle for Silicon Valley elites to develop high-powered equipment that could dominate bitcoin mining. Mr. Pauker’s comments about a consumer focus suggest that isn’t where the company has ended up.

The initial secrecy around 21 was “solely for pragmatic reasons – we didn’t have anything to say to the world,” – says co-founder Balaji Srinivasan, who is also a partner at Andreessen Horowitz. He compares 21’s work in building bitcoin products for the general public to the sequential development of 56-kilobit Internet modems, international fiber cables and wireless Internet towers, which all helped bring the Internet into people’s homes in the late 1990s.

How do we know Evo admins got 43K BTC??? The supposed wallet address balance was 0BTC one week ago. I think they stopped processing withdrawals less than one week ago. The current balance is "only" 980 BTC

Lost funds amount is pure speculation at this point and I would not trust the likes of cryptocoinsnews as a source on the matter. Something not adding up.

Exactly. They just want to  use this opportunity to create panic. The reported site got 45k BTC in their entire operation life. What they got stolen is a fraction of it (less than 1k BTC).
Too bad for some who doesn't read and just follows the flow.

On reddit I read that withdrawals may have been stopped a week ago. In that time ~1600BTC were withdrawn from their supposed cold wallet address. Plus there is 980BTC remaining, so perhaps the real number is more like 2600BTC stolen? Point is, nobody knows but it seems very likely that it is not in the magnitude of 43K BTC!

Everyone get a grip please! it is not $12m or 43k BTC! The reporting on this matter absolutely sucks. Multiple sources claiming Evo's wallet holding 43K coins. It doesn't, it currently holds 980BTC. Bitcoin media reporting is appallingly poor.

How is that bullish? HK investors gonna suddenly pour in millions just because it won't be regulated!  Roll Eyes

I believe this was the trigger for short covering today. Not saying this is bullish but good to be aware of why something may have happened. Anyways one could argue that market was fairly oversold. Will the reversal hold? who knows

edit: also one should probably watch market reaction as english news covers the story and US wakes up. Just saying, is something to be on the watch for.

This is really a big deal if institutional money was waiting for a regulated Bitcoin exchange in New York. They just opened to US customers today.

https://www.itbit.com/blog/breaking-ground-in-the-united-states

Indeed. And, for man-on-the-street traders, FDIC insurance is a pretty massive step forward for a Bitcoin exchange.

And just maybe this will light a fire under the Winklebot bros to get Gemini operational.

No, that bid wall was up yesterday before that service announced its launch. Besides, the bid wall was pulled so fast that it had to have been controlled by one entity. I don't believe it was numerous different people behind it who were trading independently, it had to be controlled by one entity with a lot of financial muscle.

Thus was born...
