Actual cost to mine a bitcoin is $597.23

There is some entity in the miner space right now that has enourmous hash power, which drives the prices down. I will take my advantage from the situation and buy as much as i can.

I'm so damn tired of these dumpers and these people putting up ask walls the minute we're about to go up.
It's like they do everything they can to make sure the price doesn't go above 600.
Sooooo tired of it.

It is what is known as "determined sellers" ... they are not interested in selling for the best price, but rather keeping the price below targets. They have become rife in all the other commodity markets that allow leveraged trades and derivatives backed by undeliverable promises. I'm waiting for the next several Bitcoinica-like blow ups when the bull run puts pressure on broken models like these ...

I agree. Will buy 4000 BTC to touch the 600 wall and look at the outcome Tongue

Think about this. There have been 100's millions of dollars invested in that mine.  There is NO WAY that that mine is not HODLing a large % of their coins. NO ONE is going to invest 100's of millions into a business that can only exists of two years (because of halving). In case you are too stupid to understand what I am saying, let me try to make it more clear. If the owners of that mine only wanted to mine bitcoin and sell it for a quick and small profit, because they didnt really believe in bitcoin, then their business model would be to invest hundreds of millions into a business that would only last 2 years at the most and only return a small % profit.

Thats INSANE. Whoever is financing that mine believes more in bitcoin than 99% of the bulls on this forum. You better damn believe they are holding onto a lot of it.

I disagree. I think they are in for a quick profit and dont 'believe' in bitcoin. Its more monkey see, monkey do.

Once per week, the market just makes no sense to me.
The price edges slowly up on small buys to 515.  Walls appear, price drops, walls drop, price drops. Predictable.
Walls get eaten, price jumps most of the way back to 515 in minutes.  Predictable.
Instead of eating the minor remaining resistance to 525 or 530, the market drops back to/below the price with walls.  Weird.

BTC markets are tough to figure out.

Right now the market is insane, irrational, odd and just a pain in the ass

Absolutely no reason? How about the lack of demand? The hodlers are doing their job, but there has to be real demand on the exchanges to market buy the price up. We've seen no sign of such demand in months now.

If this lack of demand were due purely to investors not wanting to deal with exchanges, that would be one thing. But SecondMarket doesn't give me hope of huge off-exchange demand, and more merchant adoption continues to keep additional sell pressure in the picture.

We have a market exaggeration downwards and one symptom is lack of demand. Its about psychology now. The fundamentals keep growing stronger every day.

So let's call out everyone that said they were buying if we dipped to $480.  Cheesy

Why buy now, according to fallling we can have free coins sooner rather than later.

You do realize that falling has been the one voice of reason among a bunch of permabulls here who in concert scream "buy more and hold because loosing money is great and the price will surely go back up"?

Perhaps with the right major crisis the nations will accept the GNU World Order but I don't see that as likely.

Now consider this:

* LTC is traded at $4.855
* The total supply of LTC will be 4 times that of BTC. Thus, the price LTC should be 1/4th of the fair price of a BTC
* 4.855*4 = $19.42

 Huh

Falling a voice of reason... sure. LTC is doomed because it has no advantage over bitcoin, simple as that.

See the charts for at least one year range, and you will see price rising and the hashrate too.

So you can find evidence of both kind of relation(direct and reverse), so I guess the hashrate alone is not a good predictor.

You are right. However in the long run hashrate/difficulty which is an estimate for the basic production cost per BTC (excluding HW, OC) will approach or even show congruency with the price per BTC. At least that is what Satoshi assumed: "The price of any commodity tends to gravitate toward the production cost. If the price is below cost, then production slows down. If the price is above cost, profit can be made by generating and selling more." Feb. 21, 2010 Satoshi Nakamoto

He meant that hashing power adapt to price: a self-regulating system, where price is an external factor.
But price will not adapt to hashing power, because the system of miners have no way to control it.

Miner can't control it but miners can act. By shutting down inefficent HW.

You are right, the miners system can self-regulate itself in that way, essentially.

There are people that mine only to help the network. Not sure if they are significant.

Also shutting down inneficient HW might means more centralization

I'm also worried about mining centralization. But i don't believe in altruism. So anybody who is supporting the BTC network expects a positive outcome for himself like increased price, sustainability, growth. Thats not a bad thing. Thats how we tranlate bitcoin into reality.

I used to be convinced of that. But imo it should already have happened. People here seem to think Bitcoin can just go down and down and then magically go up again. Yes this happened a few times times but one day it will stop. Now was the time for it to get big. To go up. Instead everybody seems to be cashing out and scaring away new people. It's doing the opposite of what it should do.
I'm not sure if we will get yet another chance. I think this was it and it failed.

If its any comfort to you i'm loosing thousands USD and being ok with one bottle of scotch a day.

This aren't people who want cheap coins. They simply try to kill the market. There is no other logical explanation for this behaviour. These guys won't stop till we reach 0. They just won't stop. So fucking tired of it.

I think the fear has reached an extreme far higher than anything in 2014 yet. People (including me) are talking about getting back to work, putting castles for sale, and the price reaching $100-$200 in a matter of weeks.

Typically, extreme fear is associated with prices that in nearly all timeframes provide far above-average returns. Unlike most extreme fear situations, the one in Bitcoin now is very easy to capitalize on, because bitcoins can easily be bought 24/7.

Even if buying more is not a realistic option due to the portfolio already being heavy in BTC, selling is generally not warranted unless you want to be one of those taken advantage of.

Didn't you call the bottom a few weeks ago?

last year we had a 2-3 months of trading between $90-120, it was then when I decided to invest more, it was clear (or felt) to me that something was developing, I didn't expect 1000 but I was thinking about 400.

We could go from 330 to 430 but then we could fall back to 280 and so on... the average price of that week and the weeks ahead are not that far, by looking at the 1w chart(long term) even when the price is volatile a normal sane investor could catch that bottom average price, but an investor that panic each time could lose everything.

look at the 1w chart, regardless of the pumps and dumps and guys yelling about reversal and whatnot... it is still damn accurate and clear about the last bubble not totally bursting, I sold between 580-630 and I kept holding my fiat (till yesterday I bought at 300 and sold at 318) just by looking to that chart every week, even when there is an action I wait till that week candle close and wait for the next one to see how it will perform, and till now it still showing a bearish market.

1w chart ( from septemebr 2011- October 2014)

I might be wrong, and this market could react totally the contrary of my understanding, but I am willing to give it a try Smiley

Alright, I see your point now. What you mean is, there was plenty of time to get in "relatively cheap" before the next bubble started.

I agree with that.

But I hope you understand my point as well: From the perspective of the absolute bottom, that 90-120 USD range was already 2 to 2.5 times higher than the bottom. In that sense, not really the cheapest coins anymore. But, "cheap enough", if you want to get in before the next rally, which is what you mean I suppose.

EDIT: to make it more "graphic", let's assume $280 was in fact the bottom this time (I'm not saying it necessarily is, but that's not the point in this argument). Then we could hover in the $400, $500, $600 range for a while before the next rally, applying the same factor as in 2013.
I don't know about you, but buying in at $500, when I could have bought in at $300, seems okay to me, but not really ideal either.

I understood your point, and BTW only a lucky bastard can catch that "real" bottom, because usually it doesn't hold for long....

I think we are still far from bottom... it wouldn't matter that much for me if I am wrong anyway, because I am not going to invest more than $4200... I will invest it only when there is a real clear reversal and I dont mind missing a 10-30% just to be sure, because waiting for that real bottom and figuring out how many more Bitcoins you could buy for the same money is priceless.

Thousands standing on the side lines waiting for that reversal. And you think you can be the lucky bastard that gets in right on time?

This forum reminds me of the GTAT forum (until Monday). The posts -- with almost a religious devotion -- claiming that GTAT was going to be huge soon because of Apple, and that investors were getting in early and were going to strike it rich soon. But alas, it failed, and the pigs got slaughtered.

I know most people here are first time investors and they think bitcoin is awesome technology or what not, and that's why they have to make all the comparisons with the Internet, the telephone or whatever when they describe bitcoin. It's a way to delude themselves into thinking that bitcoin is much bigger than it really is. Why is Wall Street not buying bitcoin, the currency? Because it's overhyped. They can see right through it, and they're staying out, and only investing some VC to extract potential value out of some of the start ups surrounding it.

Guys, I hate to be a wet blanket, but take a look at some of the stories on the GTAT forums, people got burned... bad. Lots of stories about losing years of savings. I know you'll all claim "this is money I can lose" because you're telling yourselves that there's no way bitcoin is going to zero. People said the same thing for GTAT. Like Warren Buffett said, when the tide goes out, we'll see who was swimming naked. I suspect a lot of you are swimming naked right now.

Be careful out there. I don't want to see the stories of people losing their retirement savings, or losing all the money that was earmarked for their disabled children or what not. Sadly, I know it's going to happen though.

You sure are so wise for being a newbie... Probably guys here are sending you PMs and asking you what to do, too?

Banned again by bitcoin high priests for being a heretic. You do realize they don't ban people on the gold forums or any other investment for being bearish, no? Like I said, this place is faith based, and that is why it will fail... no fundamentals to back it up.

Did you know the user base of bitcoin is smaller than the frequent flyer club of Kuwaiti airlines? Bitcoin has been around for almost 6 years and nobody out there is interested. It's all faith based and controlled primarily by whales. The whales are your God (OK, so it's polytheistic.)

Market moves however they decide. Eventually they will pull the plug on the believers, and we're going back to single digit dollars.

So much effort just to warn us. You're a true gentleman. Should I sell everything right now?

We will probably revisit the low $300s, and maybe even go down as low as $230-$210 before the big bounce (there's the long term log trend line there, that will make for a local bottom).

All that in the next few days, but it will probably take like a week or so.

If we are making a new low as you assume breaking the 266 mark you don't have to buy anymore. It's over than. It will drop to two digits and won't recover for a year.

it might not be popular, but what happens is that bitcoin prices only move based on technical factors. Fundamentals are lagging.
This is why it is best to make forecasts based on technical chart analysis and not fundamentals.
Just look how foolish Tim Draper's bitcoin purchases are. He reads in mainstream media that bitcoin is the next big thing and he buys bitcoins first at around 600-700$ , losing half in value.
He has been at least 1.5 years too late...

Correct but its math based and the 100 billion created at start is all that will be made.  Also, XRP's are destroyed with every transaction so people think of that as its own way of mining...
first there was 50Billion XRP, then one day poeple woke up and found that there was 100Billion XRP.

I don't think this usual 5<x<10 USD/BTC asymmetry would be manageable in times like these if USD swaps were >>50% spent on >2:1 leverage ratios.

Then again, that would be such a waste of my life and I would have to be the biggest loser in the world to go on the forum of a currency I do not like and post on and on about how people should not be using that currency.

That would be about the stupidest thing someone could do. Such a waste of life. How much of a loser would you have to be to do something like that.

No, I will leave the Ripple users to their lives. If they like it, it's all them.

From http://www.investopedia.com/articles/analyst/030102.asp

S&D players clutter message boards, so optimistic information cannot easily be found. "Get out before it all comes crashing down" and "Investors who wish to enter a class action lawsuit can contact…" are typical posts, as are their projections of $0 stock prices and 100% losses. If their strategy is suspected by "longs", they attack the person who has caught them. In other words, the market manipulator will do everything in his or her power to keep buyers out of the stock and keep the price heading south.

Sounds familiar?

Perhaps, but that's not the point.  There are 3,600 bitcoins mined per day when the hashrate is static, more when it is increasing.  The majority of these coins are sold to pay for electricity and upkeep of the mines, bills need to be paid.  This means that even if every bitcoiner just hodls, new money has to come into the system to maintain the price.

In other words, the bitcoin network is printing money at a rate of around 15% per year.  This is just like the FED printing 15% more dollars a year - both debase the underlying currency by 15%.

I think bitcoin which is up +2251.12% in two years can deal with 15% inflation.

On an unrelated note, and if it's not too forward of me to ask, what is your current bitcoin position?  You seem to be rather testy and irritable, I understand such etiquette lapses are often the result of what's known in the financial circles as "being overinvested."

Conceited kunts like you are half the reason people can't be fucked with this tech.

Let me rephrase. Silk Road was the only time I've seen so far that average people who would otherwise not care about BTC were forced to use it (adopt it) because they wanted their online drugs. Henceforth when they had to work a little bit harder or were too scared after the shut down they left the scene.

Not saying it was the right direction for BTC but it demonstrated for me how it needs to be adopted to succeed. And it will not be successful based on the sound-money arguments without a systemic financial collapse of the currency system (still possible).
Until then pay-wave credit cards have BTC beat.

Black Markets are still an important part of the BTC ecosystem, like it or not.

There's nothing magic about $50+ making it the absolute bottom.

Just because it stopped around $50 in April 2013 doesn't mean it will again.

There's a whole different bunch of people playing the game today.

Looks like we are at euphoria stage of bear market.

Somebody wanted to pop Bitcoin's ATH myth like it was a virgin sacrifice. Big deal. Now they are afraid to drop it below the previous bubble's low or $60. I want to see them drop 8000 BTC on stamp in one sell order to get it that low.

They can easily force it to 1$ or lower. They have unlimited supply of database coins.

If you folks have any sense you'd pull all your coins off the exchanges 'cos someones running fractional reserve, over 10k dumped and no movement on days destroyed and only a couple of k's worth of dollar swaps pulled. No excuse for lack of transparency on exchanges, if others can run with transparency and user controlled wallets then what do they have to hide? If you're not asking that you're irresponsible with your coins and deserve to lose them. I'd suggest stopping trading on the first of every month and pulling coins to drive out the bad actors.

Second that.

I stop trading from now on and put my coins in cold storage. There is no objective way to determine the price of bitcoin and without this I am not able to make rational decisions. With all the ongoing problems we have regarding exchanges there is strong evidence of insider trading, fraud and security weaknesses. All I know is that the market price is not matching the developement in the crypto space right now. Wether your bull or bear, be careful these days.

Expecting double or single digit coins is retarded tbh.

Not too long ago Bitcoin was 50 dollars away from reaching double digits.

Yes, pretty retarded, huh ?

Indeed. It seems like a fractal of the first bearish channel. My take one month ago was stability around 255 +/-30(40) for at least 2 month. We are at the lower edge for some days now. I think we will see 260-270 very soon. With the effect, that bulls will come out with arrognace. (Like there is no tomorrow and a bubble is immanent). I think this is the time for another down-turn to ~230. After that, my picture becomes unclear.

Bulls being arrogant tends to destroy every bull rally we've seen over the last year or so. The "hopium" is just too high, still. And I'm frankly quite afraid that many bulls may have already lost sizeable chunks of their positions and maybe won't be able to push this thing out of the downwards channel. In that case we have to wait until bears turn bulls and a trend-reversal is confirmed at some level.

i guess there's an chicken-egg problem. bears wont turn bulls without an trend-reversal that only can be caused by a certain amount of bulls. we need an external impulse (what's up with that etf thing anyway) to spark a rally.

the only reason i'm still optimistic is all the vc money thrown into bitcoin which is already nearing btc's market cap. I doubt these guys will let their investment go. 1M dollar would be enough to squeeze half of the shorts away.

The separation of exchanges into two categories seems to already be starting because of KTC regulations. The most compliant exchanges require so much official paperwork that it's difficult to register at them. The other less scrupulous exchanges are easier to register at but are often accused of running fractional reserves because they are never audited.

bitfinex was audited a year or so ago by a trusted community member (it's about time to do it again).

Just because an exchange doesn't do KYC/AML doesn't mean it can't (or shouldn't) be audited.

We can have trustless exchanges right away. The code is written [https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=7277865].
Guess why we don't have it yet. Fractional Reserve and all information about the orderbook - this is heaven.

no more contracts, notarys, lawmakers, goverments needed.

'I was sure we would never see the adoption of the Euro. Countries giving up their currencies for a common tender was, it seemed to me, completely out of tune with currency being a carrier of people's cultural identity, celebrating national heroes and events, as it had been for hundreds of years.'
- John Naisbitt

'The new leader is a facilitator, not an order giver.'
- John Naisbitt

'We created the hierarchical, pyramidal, managerial system because we needed it to keep track of people and things people did; with the computer to keep track, we can restructure our institutions horizontally.'

The White House today denied that Pres. Obama had said at a Mob sit-down over in Germany that the strength of the dollar was a problem. Which obviously was interpreted as a confirmation that he had in fact stated exactly that.
A strong dollar is bad for exports. The US needs to turn the trade deficit around.

Yes, and it´s also bad for U.S. multinationals. The higher the dollar the fewer units of it they get to book as revenue and profits back home. So, Wall St. probably wouldn´t mind if it dropped.
