When I was on IRC while Bitcointalk was down I witnessed a conversation where someone was surprised that another person had 755 tabs open because he only had 600 something. I was like, WTF?
How do you manage that many tabs??
I never bookmark stuff, just leave the tab open forever... Chrome has a setting where all your tabs reopen when you launch it.
Plus, having a laptop with 16GB of ram helps... got 5 VMs running, no pagefile.

I think the biggest difference this time it new people coming in... I've had people who have never considered bitcoin, and never traded stocks before asking me how to buy, and its so easy now to just direct them to coinbase.com instead of explaining exchanges and wire transfers to them.

Obviously you can't brute force a 256 bit AES key. But you MIGHT be able to brute-force an algorithm to fix whatever corruption happened to the metadata... I'm not an expert but at the very least it seems plausible.
For 5000 bitcoins, I'd hire an expert and get a few Amazon GPU clusters going. If you're not into the idea of trying out of pocket, maybe you'd be willing to crowdfund to give it a shot? I'd be interested.
Metadata dosen't matter too much, the key is part of whats corrupt. Would me far more cost effective to attempt to brute force the silk road coins

Recovery key doesn't help. The master key is encrypted with your recovery key and bootup usb. Thats the key used to decrypt the data, and its not stored anywhere except the drive itself.

Yup, when its the one dollar coffee, the merchant just needs to make sure a miners fee was sent. Otherwise the payment may be sent back to the originating address.
Confirmations don't really matter if there is a miners fee sent, speaking on behalf of small transactions.
Bitpay or another payment processor should offer merchants a credit account and/or insurance to provide instant transaction times.

One thing bitcoin needs badly right now is a leveraged trading market with real capital. Bitfinex and Icbit are useless to us because a single margin deposit is likely to exceed their available funds.
How would that solve the volatility issue? If anything it will create more of it by putting in more capital bottlenecks. The very same ones you are having issues with right now.
Its pretty obvious he wants to buy right now, but has no funds. With leverage he could use coins to buy coins and volatility during a crash is reduced by large bids and buys.

BTC China's rapid decline is obviously down to the payment processing thing but also the fees play a huge factor. Volume is inevitably going to explode with a zero fee exchange. It would be the same regardless of where it was located in the world.

Yes, it is CFD. It is only betting on price. No real bitcoin is bought/sold.

This is the telecos wanting to take over prioritization in the name of optimizing their networks. Other networks might deprioritize NBC to harm Comcast. This is a surrender of freedom.

As many must have noticed, volume was generally quite low over the last two days.
Volume in China actually recovered a bit compared to Jan/31 (Chinese New Year), to about 50 kBTC. Huobi's hour-by-hour volume followed an unusual pattern: low in the morning and lunchtime, growing to very high at night, and falling to near zero only after 02:00 am. Not implausible for an extended holiday, I would say.
BTC-China seems to be still in zombie mode; the little real volume they have may be just arbitrage.
The total volume outside China, on the other hand, was a record low this Sunday Feb/02. It was ~25% less than Friday's Jan/31 (itself 50% less than previous Friday's Jan/24) and only ~1/3 of previous Sunday's Jan/26.
The biggest drop outside China was at Mt.GOX: only 2.28 kBTC on Sunday Feb/02, which is ~1/2 of Fri Jan/31 and Sat Feb/01, and ~1/5 of previous Sunday's Jan/26.
Its SuperBowl Sunday... a de-facto national holiday here.

Turing completeness is a horrible idea for scripting in a cryptocurrency. Just look at the past couple of decades of vulnerabilities in java, javascript, flash, etc, etc. Turing complete money will drain your wallet on it's own.
The only thing I can see stopping it is another cryptocurrency which accomplishes everything that Bitcoin does and more, only with a codebase so different that Bitcoin can not adopt these added desirable features.
May I ask how important you feel Turing completeness is in the scripting language?

These are good points too. Turing completeness in a scripting language means that "anything computable, can be computed by running the appropriate script." So there is an infinite surface of potential problems that would slowly show themselves, I think. The Java exploits are a good analogy.

Yup. Lots of obvious short stop losses just got squeezed on Bitfinex, probably on Huobi as well. Could be another classic Bitcoin Fuck You Rally. Wouldn't be surprised if it was as according to all the indicators, a break out should just not be happening. I can't speak for Huobi where the break out was initiated, but on Bitfinex, the lionshare of the buying power of the break out was squeezed short trades and even then Bitfinex conspired to rob everyone blind by front running all the Ask orders required to cover stop loss orders above $600, and then selling them to stop loss orders at $608.

Bitfinex never got an ID for my registration. Although I am not fully verified and I take my profits in bitcoin and they go straight to paper wallets monthly. Im sure to set up bank accounts and such requires ID but not for bitcoin/litecoin in and out only.

This forum needs a button called "Mark as Troll", if enough people mark somebody as a Troll, all their messages can go straight to the "moon" folder where nobody has to read them.
The ignore button (a couple of years ago) used to glow from light yellow to darker orange depending on the amount of ignores, so if you saw someone with a glowing Ignore button you knew he was ignored by so many users(doesnt mean he is a troll though), you know someone like you would have a red glowing button.... but thanks to Theymos and his free speech hardcore support (which I do support as well) this doesn't work anymore.
Actually it was removed because of a database performance issue, I think running count() on the ignores was slowing page loads or something like that.

Just another data point, since my node has been running bmon for almost exactly 1 week. With 512 connections, it's had a throughput of 2.49TB. The router is a VM on the same physical machine and has a total throughput of 72.26TB in the same time.
I think the competition for deploying gigabit fiber is going to outpace the demand for block space, especially if lightning and segwit get activated.
