I'm amazed the price has been so stable with the DDoS or whatever going on for so long. Volume is really really low.

I'm amazed at the number of bitcoiners who believe a stable price with volume this low is a good thing in an almost purely speculative market.

I don't think you have enough tabs open.

yeah i saw that and was like wtf!

When I was on IRC while Bitcointalk was down I witnessed a conversation where someone was surprised that another person had 755 tabs open because he only had 600 something. I was like, WTF?  Shocked   How do you manage that many tabs??

I never bookmark stuff, just leave the tab open forever... Chrome has a setting where all your tabs reopen when you launch it.

Plus, having a laptop with 16GB of ram helps... got 5 VMs running, no pagefile.

You can talk about sellers remorse in a couple of years.

Still got plenty more.

Besides, remorse is the 5000btc wallet lost to a corrupted bitlocker partition, or close to that lost to pirate.

I wouldn't give up if I were you.

Obviously you can't brute force a 256 bit AES key. But you MIGHT be able to brute-force an algorithm to fix whatever corruption happened to the metadata... I'm not an expert but at the very least it seems plausible.

For 5000 bitcoins, I'd hire an expert and get a few Amazon GPU clusters going. If you're not into the idea of trying out of pocket, maybe you'd be willing to crowdfund to give it a shot? I'd be interested.

Metadata dosen't matter too much, the key is part of whats corrupt. Would me far more cost effective to attempt to brute force the silk road coins

37. Post 3554699 (copy this link) (by mb300sd) (scraped on 2020-04-04_Sat_11.22h):

Recovery key doesn't help. The master key is encrypted with your recovery key and bootup usb. Thats the key used to decrypt the data, and its not stored anywhere except the drive itself.

I'm just speculating that most of the information is still there, that maybe only a few bits are wrong, or that something is bit-shifted, or whatever (again, not an expert). It seems much, much less computationally intensive to try to repair the key than crack a wallet blind.

The first few entire sectors of the drive are unreadable.

Shit, sorry man. Some kind of nasty hardware failure? I'd have thought the recovery guys could extract the data.

Yep, physically unreadable, even with cleanroom work. I've accepted the loss... If I really needed coins, it would be alot easier to hire someone to go beat the stolen ones out of pirateat40.

At this point I'm just holding onto the 5k I have left with an iron fist.

So, where do I set first buy when I go to sleep in a couple of hours?  Shocked Grin

Think of the value.

If you value bitcoin more than other things, just buy now. If you would like to have more coins but don't mind having some other things as well, select a suitable buyback price.

My buying range is $300-$500 but obviously I haven't set the bids yet because it would look bullish on charts.

(I disregard sarcasm and seize the opportunity to teach Wink )

it's sad that so many people can't even buy anymore coins, because their buying range is like 20-50 or 100-200 or sub 500... guess there is a need for the ETFs and 2nd markets...

millis or mills      = mBits   = 0.001 units
micros or mics      = μBits   = 0.000001 units
Satoshi or sats            = 0.00000001 units
   nanos or nans   = nBits   = 0.000000001 units (for when 1 Bitcoin = 1 Mega dollar or BTC1 = M$1 = $1,000,000)

I never got why we actually have satoshis and not nanobits, the 64-bit signed integer is more than big enough to store >21M bitcoins even if it was divisible to nanos.

Yep. 4-6 confirmations are what exchanges wait for when transferring millions of dollars. Who gives a shit when it's a $1 coffee?

Yup, when its the one dollar coffee, the merchant just needs to make sure a miners fee was sent. Otherwise the payment may be sent back to the originating address.

Confirmations don't really matter if there is a miners fee sent, speaking on behalf of small transactions.

Bitpay or another payment processor should offer merchants a credit account and/or insurance to provide instant transaction times.

Bitpay already accepts 0-confirm transactions

Bitcoin is by design encouraging saving and thus attracts people who would like to save. (But have only shitty ways of doing so thanks to the inflationary monetary system  Grin)

The is the argument against a gold (or bitcoin) standard by the FED and banking status quo.

Under today's credit fiat system, it makes no sense to "save" money in currency since it continuously inflates. Instead savers are suppose to invest the money into businesses, capital spending, stocks, etc.

The problem is today no one saves this way, instead savers (those with disposable income over expenses) spend money frivolously on vacations/restaurants/crap instead of saving for the long term, and many of those who do invest do so in bubble type assets (i.e. large houses).

The fiat credit system is suppose to work in theory, but in practice it obviously does not. Hence bitcoin. It provides a real escape for true savers.

Saving is good, hoarding like a lunatic is not.

Confession: My name (pseudonym) is Erdogan, and I am addicted to the austrian economics.

Everything that is produced, has to be consumed or invested (in capital goods). When you buy a car, you pay with your work. Or, even easier to understand: when a farmer buys a pair of rubber boots, he really pays with potatoes. The money is just oil in the trading machinery. Money has to be maximally tradable, and it has to keep its value in the short run and the long run.

The two main functions of money, medium of exchange and store of value, are closely related, and you can not have the one, and not the other.

When you save money, you let other people consume what you do not consume. All saving is for the purpose of spending later. Tomorrow, next summer, when you retire, or by your descendants in the next few generations.

Hoarding is just a derogtive name for for saving, and the hate is undeserved. What is bad with letting some needy child getting in front of you in the toilette queue?

The savers (hoarders) deserve to be able to spend the full value of their savings when they later decide to spend.

With bitcoin, of course, you will be able to spend more. That is because bitcoin, the new money, is in the implementation phase. When you save in bitcoin, you do not just save, you are also an entrepreneur. You are paid for your knowledge and vision, by giving the world a better money.

The bitcoiners saw all that they had made, and it was very good.

Let's say only 300000 people own bitcoins today and they all decide to hoard their coins for 20 years. How will this new money spread to the rest of the population?

Those who want in, will buy, the price will rise until some of those hoarding are willing to sell.

I always say I'm going to hold for the long term, but I'm a college student living off of a few thousand bitcoins, there is a price.

Remember, every person, without exception, who is calling for major drops in price, has sold at least a portion of their stash and are wanting YOU to sell your coins to them for cheap.

You left out those with no stake in Bitcoin who just like trolling.

I used to absolutely hate seeing dips.  Now, I see them as a way to kick out the weaklings.  What doesn't kill BTC seems to make it stronger.
Or are people who think the current price is not supported by the vast majority of the potential market... It isn't just about wanting to buy coins cheaper.
Some people are very much bothered by speculation in this forum.
Yep. Either you believe the price is going to endlessly travel upwards from here or you are a troll. A lot of these guys who want the price to go up have admitted to not selling at the highs and are just holding. What do they care if the price is to temporarily go up to $1200 again if they aren't going to take profit?

I've long admitted to being a long term holder, but there is a price that I would sell a significant percentage of my stash off at, and we are close to being within an order of magnitude of that number now.

Now that's worth a whole new thread.

But I will simply say no. You're thinking in human terms. I might argue an all-knowing god would not be subjected to the Time dimension.

Furthermore, if the string theory "confirmation" that propped up last week turns out to be valid, we could eventually in a very remote and distant future all be looking into a single-dimensional universe for our TA (where strings are vibrating and things are actually happening and then being "echoed" in a holographic manner to our 10-dimensional universe, which would be just a projection of said one-dimensional universe).

But yeah, best leave it there......

I'm sure if we ever advanced that far, there would be no need for an economy.. We'd just have matter converters that took in garbage and spit out whatever we can imagine.

One thing bitcoin needs badly right now is a leveraged trading market with real capital. Bitfinex and Icbit are useless to us because a single margin deposit is likely to exceed their available funds.

How would that solve the volatility issue?  If anything it will create more of it by putting in more capital bottlenecks.  The very same ones you are having issues with right now.

Its pretty obvious he wants to buy right now, but has no funds. With leverage he could use coins to buy coins and volatility during a crash is reduced by large bids and buys.

Maybe Loaded just got back with his cheap coins and wants some bucks back.

He must play both ways, after all.

You can't blame him for needing a little cash back - it ain't all his own money....

EDIT - everyone was asking 'how do you arb China'?  Answer - take a plane full of USD over Wink
Loaded's goals and most everyone else's goals are likely to be very different.

I think Loaded is a hero, but if that was someone else's money and there is a price gap - the temptation to get a little fluid cash must be high.

Any sales depress the price and make buying back low easier - so what's to lose - if he is sitting on a $200 margin, why not play?

It will be less painful - Loaded is a long term bull, but he who pays the piper calls the tune.

We shall see - I hope it is a buyer with long-term aspirations - but if Loaded did pull off that trip, it's a fantastic trade whatever happens.

Why do you keep thinking of "cash" as profit?

I dont see why selling would be just about getting "cash" back. It can be both.... When you're a market mover, you can sell and buy back at profit... That means both holdings in BTC and Fiat are up....

Whoever i can see some guys here are just delusional.....

But the thing is, if he did take CASH to china, as in physical bills, theres a fixed amount, so its either coins or dollars before making another trip.

Listen, I read loaded's posts. You guys have to understand that if he really was carrying bags of cash, he would not have been able to set foot on Chinese soil.

What makes you think getting money into China is hard? That is what China does. They run huge trade surpluses. Just with the US it's like 300 B USD every year.

Invoice manipulation is a huge way to get USD in.

You guys are missing the point and extrapolating into something I spoke nothing of... I stated that Loaded himself would not be able to move the amounts required with him under the pretenses assumed from his posts.

I never stated that certain financial structures would not allow you to move capital in sizable amounts into and out of China.

I think you overestimate the size of one million dollars. I don't think it'd be very difficult to hide a couple million in cash and gold in a large plane, especially with the assistance of a mechanic...

The small pile is 1 million.

It'd be really hard to tell gold apart from airplane parts without disassembly...

Also, security at small private airports is virtually nonexistant. Source: I'm a pilot.

Yeah I already notice the first signs of this. People who have no freaking clue what the hell they're talking about suddenly act like they thinks it's the coolest thing. Very different mentality as before.

This will probably end in tears for quite a few of these people but well doesn't anything? These are the same people that bought gold at the peak and are now selling.

it seems clear that everyone and her brother are short-term bearish (hence has already sold everything not nailed down) and long-term bullish (hence has nailed everything left down twice, and then bolted it and welded the door shut).  i am finding it increasingly difficult to imagine who, then, is left to sell anything?  the guy loaded bought his doges from?

In theory it would go this way. If all the ones who influence the price are "bearish", there is no way to go but up (bearish means willingness to buy back cheaper).

In practice, the forum is not "full" of bears. It is still quite hostile towards bears actually. You can think a truly bear-dominated situation to be the reverse of the one in late November, when I was the sole dissident in the crowd of all bulls, and even I converted back to bull in about 2 weeks because of peer pressure. Only when the single remaining bull (BitChick Wink ) is ridiculed so hard that she cries and becomes a bear at the exact bottom, the sentiment has reached its extreme.

Also there are probably more and more large holders who do not write to the forum actively. I know several BTC5k+ people (in fact out of my investment club, I am the only one with a large forum presence).

The record bid sum testifies to the simple strategy of selling and then buying back at a predetermined level. Quite many have seen that it worked in the past (December) and now store big fiat in orderbooks in high hopes of a flashcrash. The bids are concentrated in lower prices, which reveals their long term nature. (Also we cannot rule out manipulation with the aim of raising the price in the interim.)

With the current bid levels, it does not seem that the market would collapse overnight. But in want of buyers there is no much going up either. Anything can happen but successful traders think what is likely to happen and with what payout. 500 before 1000 stays in force.

Is this investment club open to new members? Sign message I control 10kBTC to join?

Just as the Chinese government has recently warned citizens of the dangers of bitcoin, I am warning citizens of bitcointalk of the dangers of bitcoins, to help as many people as possible.  Only Satoshi and maybe 2 or 3 other people will make any money from bitcoin.  Everyone else will lose money, and probably destroy their life, as the Chinese government has explained.

i talked to my landlord about it. she invested in btc in june 2013. beginning of december 2013 she cashed out with some 100 k € profit.

I hope your paying rent in BTC!

BTC China's rapid decline is obviously down to the payment processing thing but also the fees play a huge factor. Volume is inevitably going to explode with a zero fee exchange. It would be the same regardless of where it was located in the world.

Does anyone have volume data from the days gox went no-fee?

Etoro is out of Beta and orders are executed 4 times a day now instead of once in beta.

They only trade paper bitcoins, correct?

Yes, it is CFD. It is only betting on price. No real bitcoin is bought/sold.

Well, if someone can buy/sell enough of them that it exceeds the orderbook, there could be incentive for them to move the price on real exchanges.

This is big govt vs big telco.
Telco wins.
Probably a good thing for people and companies that use their networks.

MPLS QoS means that things that need real-time responsiveness can get it, so your skype call doesn't get choppy when your email attachment is coming across.
Not the end of the world, and likely a good thing for progress.

It's a good thing, so long as we can control these parameters ourselves.  If I want to prioritize things differently then I should be able to.  In fact, I could already.  This is the telecos wanting to take over prioritization in the name of optimizing their networks.  Of course it is technically trivial to just ignore user priorities, but until now it was thought to be against antitrust regulations because it enables, for example Comcast, to prioritize NBC's content (which they own), and deprioritize Fox's content.  Other networks might deprioritize NBC to harm Comcast.  This is a surrender of freedom.

By ourselves, you mean free to buy network connections as you like, or be prevented by government from these being made available.
I buy "business accounts" from my telco and do my own prioritization.  Large companies pay for QoS prioritization and love it for the last 20 years, finally consumers can get a taste of it.

For most people they won't care, won't notice.
The things you are afraid of (NBC vs Cox) are already illegal under other laws in most jurisdictions (oops, sorry Italy) and are not an issue here (in the USA where this particular legal battle is fought).

If you really want to worry about something in regards to this, your radar is seeing only the media chaff, while the missile sails right through.
The operation of packet inspection for prioritization contains metadata that could ultimately be seized or subpoena and provide a deeper intrusion to privacy by TPTB.
This can show what protocols each of us are running on our networks, and that may be far more interesting than the prosaic notion of whether the ads and services you are getting are for the company from whom you are buying a network.

Think deeper.

Deep packet inspection by ISPs has been going on for at least a decade.  They never needed priority as an excuse.  But keep on cheering for more centralized control of our networks.

Would be nice if this pushes the entire internet to serve all content over TLS... however unlikely.

As many must have noticed, volume was generally quite low over the last two days.

Volume in China actually recovered a bit compared to Jan/31 (Chinese New Year), to about 50 kBTC.   Huobi's hour-by-hour volume followed an unusual pattern: low in the morning and lunchtime, growing to very high at night, and falling to near zero only after 02:00 am.   Not implausible for an extended holiday, I would say.

BTC-China seems to be still in zombie mode; the little real volume they have may be just arbitrage.

The total volume outside China, on the other hand, was a record low this Sunday Feb/02.  It was ~25% less than Friday's Jan/31 (itself 50% less than previous Friday's Jan/24) and only ~1/3 of previous Sunday's Jan/26.

The biggest drop outside China was at Mt.GOX: only 2.28 kBTC on Sunday Feb/02, which is ~1/2 of Fri Jan/31 and Sat Feb/01, and ~1/5 of previous Sunday's Jan/26.

Its SuperBowl Sunday... a de-facto national holiday here.

Turing completeness is a horrible idea for scripting in a cryptocurrency. Just look at the past couple of decades of vulnerabilities in java, javascript, flash, etc, etc.  Turing complete money will drain your wallet on it's own.

The only thing I can see stopping it is another cryptocurrency which accomplishes everything that Bitcoin does and more, only with a codebase so different that Bitcoin can not adopt these added desirable features.

May I ask how important you feel Turing completeness is in the scripting language?

I'm sorry, I do not have the technical knowledge to answer this question. Give me a few days and I may be able to give you an answer.

+1

These are good points too.  Turing completeness in a scripting language means that "anything computable, can be computed by running the appropriate script."  So there is an infinite surface of potential problems that would slowly show themselves, I think.  The Java exploits are a good analogy.

just think about something like
{ while true; }
in the scripting language. I send you such a transaction. Will your machine lock up in an endless loop?

No comment on weather this is a good idea or not, but theres a simple solution to this particular problem: fees.

Only execute the first x operations, where x=fee*const. Sure, you could make a machine freeze up for a half a second, but you'd be paying out the ass to do it.

The price is so inestable, it´s danger to play now.

Yup. Lots of obvious short stop losses just got squeezed on Bitfinex, probably on Huobi as well. Could be another classic Bitcoin Fuck You Rally. Wouldn't be surprised if it was as according to all the indicators, a break out should just not be happening. I can't speak for Huobi where the break out was initiated, but on Bitfinex, the lionshare of the buying power of the break out was squeezed short trades and even then Bitfinex conspired to rob everyone blind by front running all the Ask orders required to cover stop loss orders above $600, and then selling them to stop loss orders at $608.

These people are fucking criminals and need locked up.

You sure do whine a lot. Did you get burned at BFX and now think its all their fault?

minor outbreaks can be very subjective.

a common outbreak of the flu over a state/country vs an outbreak of syphilis within your group of close friends.

Do you guys really think the buying public is going to turn on a dime after getting screwed so hard on the last rally, in a bearish downtrend, just because some dumbass rich people decided they'd drop a few million? Or that these institutions and whales have enough fiat to keep this afloat (as if they want to?) for however long it'll take to rebuild the public perception of BTC? Man they've got a lot of you trained good. Hope you all didn't panic buy too much.

Price leads sentiment. You may correlate the newsflow with market movements but they aren't really relevent. If the price starts going up bitcoin will do its thing - again.
No offense, but you're delusional if you disagree with me.

Ha. I must be deluded then. Yes you are right all bear markets continue forever. You think the general public buys the bottom of a bear market? Really?
I'm not suggesting that bear markets continue forever, but they don't rebound off a slaughter within 30 minutes, either.

But they do rebound off the huge news that causes the bear slaughter.

No, its because the NSA backdoors it.

GNU/Linux is the most used OS in the world if I'm not mistaken?

You're grossly mistaken.

I was under the impression that billions of servers were all using linux, dwarfing the desktop PCs in numbers. And then there's android which is huge (and also linux)

first one would need to define what it means to be "most used"; one could argue that Windows is the most used, if one defines used as used like the bathroom stalls at old inner city greyhound bus stations

Way to twist what he meant. Here, I'll paraphrase it the way I've been saying it myself more than once in the past:

1) Gox was, and still is, hugely bearish. Trust in crypto lost by "Bitcoin outsiders" is significant.

2) Forumites shrug off gox as "just another exchange that blew up", "should have kept your coins in a paper wallet, hur dur". They are most likely wrong about that.

Where's the contradicton in those two statements?

ya here is the thing.

1. i don't trust bitcoin to my windoze computer locally (somebody hacked my bct-e account once & thank god i got it back)

2. so.  right now my few bitcoins are in coinbase with 2fa.  if i had enough i would do offline wallet blah blah blah.  but i'm less noobish than grandma.

3. everybody says you need to do (list of pain in the ass instructions ... "Install Ubuntu.  Don't install anything else.  Blah blah blah blah") to keep ur bitcoins safe.

4.  well guess what?  if it's THAT MUCH OF A PAIN IN THE ASS why in the HELL should I use it or expect it to be the "currency of the future" people say "bitcoin has never been hacked".  well u know what?  a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link.  gox, scammers, hackers, insecure operating systems are freakinly MASSIVE weak links in the bitcoin ecosystem

for those of you who laugh at us who don't want to install ubuntu and print paper wallets and blah blah blah (and u snicker when we lose our money) we don't ever buy anymore bitcoins.  so laugh away - but without grandma's money you ain't going to the moon

For most people's wallets, its good enough to

1. buy smartphone
2. don't root or jailbreak
3. there is no 3.

if you have over 100 coins, then learn linux.

Why do nerds/geeks have such an obsession with "lambos": is it some sort of compensatory reflex?

Because they think expensive cars will get them laid, but they don't know shit about expensive cars so they go with the only one they know about? Of course, they completely disregard the fact that the only women that will sleep with them simply because they have an expensive car is very likely to give them an STD, but that's neither here nor there, I suppose.

Actually, because lambo accepts BTC. I'd also settle for a porsche or ferrari, since BTC has already bought me a nice mercedes and a house. Geeks and nerds? I spend 20% of my income partying and traveling for football games.

This forum needs a button called "Mark as Troll", if enough people mark somebody as a Troll, all their messages can go straight to the "moon" folder where nobody has to read them.

The ignore button (a couple of years ago) used to glow from light yellow to darker orange depending on the amount of ignores, so if you saw someone with a glowing Ignore button you knew he was ignored by so many users(doesnt mean he is a troll though), you know someone like you would have a red glowing button.... but thanks to Theymos and his free speech hardcore support (which I do support as well) this doesn't work anymore.

Actually it was removed because of a database performance issue, I think running count() on the ignores was slowing page loads or something like that.

Obviously anyone with an in at BTC-E will be buying cheap, and selling elsewhere. This is not a fiat transfer problem situation like Huobi. Arbitrage is easy for anyone having fiat there, unless there's a BTC withdrawal issue we don't know about.

14% difference between BTC-E and Bitfinex.

That can't be good

But look at the volume at BTC-e. Miniscule.

1000 btc for sale at $400 ...

There's no fiat.

But why wouldn't any human just move their BTC to any other exchange and sell there?Huh?!!!!! makes zero sense, should be zero coins for sale on BTC-E, completely dead exchange IMHO, i think this spells the end for them, they may not Gox but nobody will trade their again....

That's how fiat money works -- it doesn't matter what the coin is made out of, USD isn't backed by copper. That said, the penny is one coin that actually costs more to make than its face value. It's not made out of zinc because can't afford copper.
Most people (other than batshit crazy brokeass goldbugs who can't afford gold) couldn't care less about what pennies are made of.

Actually, copper-clad zinc pennies are better than all-copper ones.  If you try to melt one with a propane torch, well before the skin melts (m.p. 1357 C) the zinc will boil off (b.p. 907) and then burn with a bright flame and dense white smoke.   That's fun.

Steel euro cents?  That sounds quite boring.

Hope you're not doing this indoors. Welding zinc plated metal causes metal fume fever, actually burning zinc... I don't wanna know.

Looking very likely we're headed back to the 370-380 range to stabilize and begin a slow steady ascent again.  Cool

Clearly learned nothing from your past disastrous mistakes and ...other self-inflicted tragedies.
Sad

@mb300sd: people weld galvanized steel all the time. Don't believe the hype Smiley

I've been there, never want to again. It was outdoors on my boat trailer too.

sure

look at the first 1000 pages of this thread
i was actually very spot on back in the day.
once the bull market really take hold, i think you'll see my short term prediction are right more often then not  Cheesy

and when i ran my newsletter bitmovements i called the top of the bubble @900 after the initial selloff and bounce back from 1200
i just didn't expect the bear market to be so devastating and long lasting.

The good ole days.. I remember that, has it really been 2 years?

Actually, yeah, it has. 2 long, painful hodling years waiting for the millions to come back.

Unless the exploit has been fixed, that doesn't change the fact that it is a security vulnerability.
They don't say this will break bitcoin, just that it can be a portal to install malware.

lol, no. nonoononono.
Did I misread?  Please correct me then.

See comments. Not a real threat.

 Shocked

If this thing doesn’t crash down under 300 in the next 28 days I’ll eat a shoe.

Quoted for posterity. I will donate my shoes from Mardi Gras.

That looks like the best one for now but ideally I'd like something that has the chart and an order entry all in one page so you don't ever have to switch screens.  Even better would be to have an order depth like wisdom and a second chart  (huobi), all one page. Alternatively, it could be compatible with android multi window.

Everything's compatible with multi window Smiley

Just another data point, since my node has been running bmon for almost exactly 1 week. With 512 connections, it's had a throughput of 2.49TB. The router is a VM on the same physical machine and has a total throughput of 72.26TB in the same time.

I think the competition for deploying gigabit fiber is going to outpace the demand for block space, especially if lightning and segwit get activated.
