The lag at Mt.Gox is unacceptable, although i think it saves us from a total fire sale.
I just dont see how they can lag. The volume of orders could be done faster if it were written by hand in a ledger by a single person who then copied it all online to a spreadsheet. Even then it wouldn't be lag.

@Chartbuddy - I really like your charts. One question though, could you present opposing sides so we can get a better view of the bid side as it happened as well? Basically show the current view and a 90 degree rotated one.

also - if you could make a navigable version of this, moving forward and back through time and rotating the view as i like, i, and i suspect others, would be willing to pay for it. i can see it now, moving across my screen in time, freely rotating, while next to it the more traditional charting software (i've got sierra chart running already.)

i've apparently talked my head off about bitcoin enough that my brother wants in. he wants to buy two block erupter blades from asicminer the next time they're available. i have word from friedcat (in a PM inquring about the group buy of usb's i'm running) that there could be more available in a week or so. worst case scenario, those will sell for about 75 btc each, as they did in the first auction.
so, what's the easiest/quickest way to get 150 bitcoin? coinbase? wire to gox or bitstamp? local? talk to me guys.

I think it bears repeating that a stable price is not really stable at all when you consider that 3600 new coins are minted every day. It takes new money pouring in to keep the price stable.
You're assuming those 3600 coins are being sold not kept.
Perhaps friedcat will disclose whether he is keeping them or not

A common reaction. People often imagine that without centrally enforced rules, everything would instantly dissolve into a dog-eat-dog war zone with people killing other people at random, looting, raping and taking a shit in front of your door (someone once provided this as an argument in this very same discussion with me..). As if the only thing stopping people from acting this way right now is the looming threat of imprisonment and punishment by the legal system. Divide and conquer still seems to be working quite well.

A person placed a large sell limit order at the bottom of the consolidation. Small fish would have no way of breaking past that, let alone 94 before it came to an end.

I really wish people would stop worrying so easily (and stop expecting price won't jump around). Learn to shrug off volatility, because it is NOT going to be a smooth ride as we go to $10,000 or $100,000. You'll get shaken off unless you're made of steel.
It was obvious we had to take a breather. Double-exponential growth never lasts. Exponential can, but not double-exponential. Hanging around the $200 mark for a week is required in order to get back onto the exponential trendline, which we got ahead of. We of course won't sit exactly at $200 but will bounce around a bit. It's just killing time until the rise continues.
Lost a lot of money by holding, but this crash feels great. Now I won't need to be so scared as we push through the ATH. Let's consolidate around $200 for a while. I'm feeling really bullish.

if thats the case say goodbye to exponential growth. we'd see no new money and have people leave altogether. I would. The main reason i like bitcoin is due to its growth potential. Its cool it can be used to buy drugs anonymously(kind of) and it could still retain that use, but the demand for it would plummet and as a basic economic principle price would follow

I tend to agree with him.
As much as I would like to see crypto be the catalyst for a new, fairer economic system I think the 'fiat is dead' crowd is somewhat deluded. Power traditionally comes from the point of a knife/barrel of a gun and the idea that govts will just let their economic authority be undermined flies in the face of human history.
Of course, what has happened in Germany, with BTC adoption there, is a counter for this argument.
It will boil down to "what's in it for us" and "can we control it". If the current global hegemony can continue their control, they will let the masses use fava beans for currency for all they care.

well, they could also go to virwox.com and use their paypal (or most debit/credit cards, but not AMEX) to deposit money there, but SLL, then exchange the SLL to BTC and withdraw the BTC. only takes a few minutes. not sure what the fees are though. haven't done it since the 100's.

todays depressing thought: june of 2012 i finally began using my mined bitcoin - i only had about 20. ended up buying some games and selling some and using the fiat to see movies or buy food and the like. to make no mention of the btc i've mined/earned after that point... that be worth, even now, $16000... more then i'll make at my actual job in the next year.

There's nothing that indicates doing anything. So far we're somewhat repeating what happened 24 hours ago, but the volume is actually even more tame. I'm not certain anyone cares to run the price up like last night; perhaps just let it malinger on as per usual this week.
Not a trader here, but this sounds likely to me. Majority of the world has some sort of end of year family stuff going on, taking them away from their normal routine. This would lead to a decrease in trading and spending patterns. Plenty could be happy to just let it be till the new year.

Sunday Thoughts:
The 'system' is essentially chaotic and too complex to
not have an infinite number of 'curve balls' coming at it - all the time. It is also fragile.
However most of the power in the world has no interest in a huge systemic collapse, so in the short term it is
unlikely to happen.
In the long term, you're right it cannot survive as it stands. Therefore it adapts, or catastrophically fails.
Currently it is a holed ship with each of the seamen being relied upon to patch the holes next to them, and if necessary calling for help from others from time to time.
However, it is not robust enough to survive the circumstances of an extreme storm and storms do (and will) hit from time to time.
Sure, Bitcoin will survive - but at the moment it still interfaces with fiat money systems (people buy and sell it with fiat) and works with existing ways of exchanging goods and services as a 'alternative and better' transfer of value system. It does still need to grow alongside the system, though.
In a total catastrophic collapse of the financial system, Bitcoin may not be ready to help. However, if the ship sinks slowly and parts of it fail enough to reduce confidence in fiat money, but not all fail, this will be the ideal scenario (for Bitcoin).
We just need patience. The ship is getting more and more holes - but we do not want it sinking entirely with all the sailors drowning, as we would go down with it.
my full agreement. bitcoin lead to my eyes opening to see all this. the global system can't sustain itself indefinitely. honestly i doubt it's got 50 years left before catastrophic failure becomes inevitable, what with all the chaos from things like the ukraine and gaza going on to shock it. sadly, i don't think there's much we can do to prevent it. it's sorta automated from the perspective of the common man. i just pray it DOES adapt, and thus slowly transition to a better world, rather then basically entering into an apocalyptic scenario.
though perhaps i'm a bit of a pessimist.

Perhaps 3 months depending upon how quickly segwit gets deployed and any last minute death throws of classic. My prediction is a slow , jagged , rise up to 500-550 in the next 2 months as well as being the depressed price before potential bubble. Keep in mind that even if the market has priced some of the halving in already there is a confluence of many factors creating a perfect storm.
1) Too many countries discussing negative interest rates
2) New bank scandals and doubts of liquidity and balance sheets
3) new bail ins being proposed
4) Oil , shipping crisis
5) Stock market unpredictable and volatile with expectations of another large crash
6) Financial uncertainty pervasive
7) Debt increasing and multiple concerns of hyperinflation
8 lack of trust in the yuan

Agreed with the sentiment , but these are complex and difficult problems to solve....Keep in mind that many ideas and solutions have been discussed for 5-6 years but finding the right balance and doing the appropriate testing takes time. ZKCPs is a really old concept that just recently been demonstrated for the first time within Bitcoin today.
as someone who considered helping test bitcoin core at one point, that is strongly understood...

WRT Blockstream... it wasn't until after Scaling HK, when gmax's email to the mailing list literally became the Core roadmap, with no hard fork increase in sight, that the pieces began clicking into place. Others had already described the whole thing as a charade and a stalling tactic, but I was actually hoping for some kind of unifying plan, I should and do feel silly for that now.
Soft fork segwit as a "scaling solution" bifurcates the capabilities of full nodes without their knowledge or permission, completely changes fee economics with favoritism to settlement transactions, and apparently is having mysterious chain forks on its testnet a month before deployment... while being sold as the safe and "ready" option. [Shrugs] The pieces certainly haven't stopped fitting yet.
well, they can't exactly force us to upgrade our clients. i'm very much a "wait a see" kind of guy. if the release of segwit comes and things go kaboom, there will still be a record of how things were before that. if it's really bad, it's technically possible to revert to the pre-forked version and carry on, i think.
of course, "technically possible" and "easy" or even "kinda doable" are vastly different things, and frankly i might be talking total bullshit anyway. i'm not totally clear on the whole "soft fork" thing.

LN isn't from Blockstream, Drya and Poon came up with it (expanding other people's work). They don't work for Blockstream. Blockstream has some people working on LN (2 IIRC), but there are many teams working on a LN implementation (while coordinating with each other so these implementations can communicate with eachother properly.
Claims that bitcoin is being capped to profit from a monopoly on LN usage are also hogwash, since LN is an open-source protocol, just like bitcoin.

I am a bit surprised that noone has mentioned one of the consecuences a split between CORE and BU would have, apart from the AMAZINGLY HUGE volatility lower combined price etc...
1) If Bitcoin is split in two, core side will be at 1MB max block size at that time, and BU with an undetermined but bigger max block size.
2) Both "parties" will start dumping each other strongly. Chaos will reign and volatility could be so huge as to wipe ENTIRE order books up and down. (mainly down, even to 0).
3) All leveraged positions will be wiped on the peaks and valleys.
4) The difficulty will be much higher than the hashrate which, by itself, will create big delays between blocks. It is uncertain how big though.
And this is what I haven't seen anyone mention:
5) There will be a huge spike in transactions with people sending his coins to the exchanges. And I mean an unprecedently HUGE number of transactions. Orders of magnitude higher than anything we have ever seen.
6) Core with its 1MB max block and difficulty over hashrate combined will take ages to move the coins (which is not that bad because there will be less BTC coins arriving at the exchanges to be dumped), BU blocksize...well, I am not sure what it will do in that scenario, but it is possible that it will lead to additional hard forks/blocksize adjustment. Also Orphan blocks will be everywhere.
7) Even if in that scenario it seems that BU would be at an advange with its increased TPS over BTC, that will lead to more BUcoins arriving at the exchanges and being dumped by BTC supporters. The price of BUcoin will be much lower than BTC, at least for some time (days, weeks, months, maybe forever).
I could go on... but the only reasonable conclusion is that all this chaos and confussion will benefit noone (maybe to exchanges in the short period, due to the extreme volatility and huge number of trades) and that all this nonsense must come to and end now.
i think plenty of people agree with that sentiment - chaos is bad, contentious hard fork = chaos.
the problem, i think arises with HOW to stop the divide. as in, "ok, we're not gonna fork, but we're also not going to give in! our way or nothing!" which... well, stagnation, which is what we have, solution wise.
it all depends on which chain satoshi dumps on...
that chain will die.

Almost sold him the contents of my walking wallet but he seemed interested and had a few.
When you have a discussion with a totally random person at the track about this stuff, that is interesting.....
i can't help but be reminded of that old story where, on the day before the big stock market crash of 1929, some big time banker was getting his shoes shined. the shoe shine boy mentions something about HIS investments, and the banker leaves and immediately pulls all his investments and gets out of the market. next day it crashes.

What is the standard Lamborghini that people put in their portfolios? The LP500S is a great car, but kind of rare-ish and wonky. Would the Diablo be a standard unit of measurement, or something else?
My quick research shows two current production models: Huracan and Aventador. The others are all older (and thus, no longer brand new.) *edit* seems there's a third one called Centenario, but they only made 20 coupes and 20 roadsters or 40 cars total, all of which have been sold.
Lockdown in Transformers: Age of Extinction is a Black or Dark Grey 2013 Aventador.
I'm thinking the Huracan, even the base model (as that's the lowest priced) is a good place to start. It's still at least 250k USD.

Two segwit branches fighting over 1M or 2M blocks feels irrelevant to me on a technical level. Both are almost the same, the diff in block size between 1M and 2M isn't that big. Its more like a battle of egos or a battle to gain control of the bitcoin brand, or an attempt to sack the core developers. Honey Badger don't care.

From another point of view the problem is that forks are muddying the water, bitcoin as a concept was once clear but now is not. Additionally the limit of 21million has been cloned to 42million to 63million and so on, of different types. So far bitcoin (or the chain that is perceived to be bitcoin) is continuing on happily but the seeds are being sown for the crypto winter to come.

- There is a lot of cash on the exchanges right now, everyone is waiting to buy the dip that will never happen due to the support from genuine new demand
- A lot of people want to get their coins off the exchanges before the fork & before the exchanges freeze transfers - so that they control the private keys to both sides of the fork - coins on exchanges are going to be in very short supply at the time of the fork
- If there is a significant loss of hash power blocks could take up to 50 mins - this would slow down the resupply of coins on the exchanges. The price will be jaw dropping once we are past the fork but there are no bitcoins to be found anywhere.
Sorry for all the people waiting for the dip to $2k - it ain't going to happen.
Now that it's a scenario I can see happening.

I would suggest an amount lower than mine to practice, and then thereafter, once you have practiced a bit to increase your increments. Good luck (even though you sound very disinclined to take these kinds of measures and you would rather worry your little bot head off

To me, that does not sound like the correct mindset for what I am saying and for preparing your portfolio for either price direction.
Accordingly, what you are doing seems to be attempting to figure out what the market is going to do, and none of us really knows.. therefore, you should be largely doing the same thing no matter what, and just making little tweaks on the margin... if you want to accumulate more BTC, then you buy a bit more on the dips. and if you want to prepare a little better for dips, then you sell a bit more on the way up.. None of these moves of tweaking should be major in terms of the value of your whole BTC portfolio, unless for instance you happen to win the lottery or something like that, which would cause you to have a sudden influx of cash that could change your ratios and your plan and/or strategy a bit more than usual.

Why don't we speak in relative terms rather than absolutes? Look at the 30-day percentage; it's usually 60+ percent. In recent months, we've seen it close to 100%. If it's going to $25k, it wont take a year. At 10% average monthly increase, $25k comes in 8 months and that would be quite sad considering the current rates of adoption - almost a let down IMHO.
That's a very reasonable logic. I spent be shocked by 6 months, even. But I think 15k, 20k will prove barriers, psychologically and just from profit taking.
Mind you, I'm mining and trading penny by penny either way. Wish I had started doing so earlier...

At the beginning of my crypto journey, I build a GPU rig, as it was something I was comfortable with (used to be a mad overclocker), and mined LTC.
I never mined BTC.
Now I'd like to. Not something large scale, and I know it might not be the best investment, I'd just like to have mined some BTC.
Do one of you know how to get an antminer S9 for a fair price ? Including from Bitmain, is there some kind of waiting list ?

With enough solar/wind you can power anything. Maybe not as efficient as you want, but it can be done. I mean, tesla just installed and turned on a battery the size of a football field down in south Australia to help with outages. If i recall what i read correctly, it can power 30,000 homes for an hour without assistance.
If i went off grid, power would not be a concern. Hell, i'd be selling it. Buy a few hundred acres, build a bunch of solar and wind, leave the rest wild... Hell yea.

Yea, dollars. And... I mean the whole 2008 financial crisis certainly didn't help, but to say it's bad luck is just not true. I had mined about 20 btc, and then did the first group buy of usb asicminer block eruptors, which had me at 15 ghash in 2013...was like 3 btc a week for a bit there.
But I'd just made some dumb choices and said/not said/done things that lead to near homelessness unemployment. Didn't have a stable job again until 2015, so all the btc I had and was mining got spent and was gone before the 2013 bubble.

Boats are awesome. The trick is to buy the
right boat for your personal needs. And the only way to find that is to go through a few of them.
I started with a motor sailer. Neither motor boat nor real sail boat, it handles like a brick but is a way to figure out if you like free (but slow), or fast (but comparatively expensive) locomotion. Tip: Check fuel use before you buy, not after. Don't wanna get a nasty surprise.
Currently fixing up a sleek and really cool looking motor boat, smaller than the first boat but still large enough for living on for a few weeks at a time. Also planning to get a small sail boat, as in small enough to hoist the mast singlehandedly, just for the hell of it.
speed and such are great, but man, i have to imagine there's nothing like sailing... especially in a smaller craft that can really haul when the wind is right.
realistically though, i rarely care to leave the house, preferring to make stuff, read, games, etc... so owning a boat seems wasteful. now renting one for a month's vacation or something... hmm.

moved my 0.002 from bitstamp to virwox (and then to paypal... easier way, anyone?) earlier. it got lumped in a transaction totalling 254 BTC and change. the fee was about 250 bucks. on a transaction valued in the millions, which included even my little 30 bucks.
there are ways to move money that do not cost insane amounts. bitcoin is one of them.

So, I am a bit unclear how your buy would be so close to the top, unless you sold some near today's top... .. and if you did, then it is not a big deal if you bought some back so high... that is $500 below the top, which is about 3%.
Even though my current increments are between 4% and 6%, I used to trade in 1.5% increments, just for practice and just to set up buy and sell orders. I know some high volume and high frequency traders set their bots for less than 1%, but gosh probably need a bot for that, especially with the intensity of these recent price movements.
Yea, i'd sold like 40 above the buy a few minutes earlier. It's all worked out nicely now.
I actually found an open source bot, gecko something? And have a handful of programmer friends... Gonna get it set up and simply running backtest style, for starters. Then we shall see if my instincts, played by the bot, work in my favor.
Or at might just build a neural network into it and after sufficient testing let the bot make its own decisions.

Bots are going to be dangerous because you have to be careful to program in a way that is not going to screw you up.
Also, every once in a while, I accidentally hit sell when I meant to buy or buy when I meant to sell. Usually if I discover it within a few hours I can create orders that make up for the loss of the one order accident... but if you get multiple accidents, it could become detrimental to your holdings.
Hence the back testing to see how it handles the market without rising real btc. That and my trading is literally 45 usd.

Ouch, I think some people here, like Arklan, also started in 2011 and supposedly end up with barely anything. But like Rosewater said, if Andreas Antonopoulos can end up with almost no bitcoin and only recently become debt free, then any bitcoiners can end up making wrong calls that eventually see most of their paper wealth to evaporate (and that includes even the current semi-billionaire such as Roger Ver).

Did your BTC talk account get hacked into, too, and then you are not the real deal? Did you lose any BTC during the hacking attempts? what was your reason for your hiatus? was it because of the hackings or something else?

the hacking didn't access my account here. yes, i lost some BTC, .001 mined at slush pool, which they had changed the payout address. other then that, they tried something with my phone, but i reverted that before any damage. a guy was private messaging me about a similar hack attempt happening to him at the same time, (back around thanksgiving i think this was, when the hack actually occured.) the hiatus... if you look at my posting history, it's not uncommon for me to poof for a few weeks or whatever. totally unrelated to any of the hacking. i get absorbed in other things, or busy at work, whatever. then don't check the forum for a couple days, then end up with a stack of notifications about replies to threads i'm watching, then put off checking it... and put it off, and off, and off...
also, if you really wanted, there should be a picture of me, real world, here somewhere. from when i ran the group buy of the first asic usb sticks from friedcat back in 2013 or whatever it was. i could, if someone felt it needed, take a recent pic of myself. a comparison of the two would be rather definitive.
but since i'm not attempting any business or asking for money or whatever, what's the point?

Bitcoin itself will do a lot of the heavy lifting in ending the Fed and creating an honest society. But it also us - what are we doing to those ends? holding, running nodes, mining, building infrastructure? keeping the USG out (cf scams like eth/bcash/intel/google)?
personally, all i can do is run a node at the moment. which, come to think of it, might not even be a full node - i think i need to open a port of the router or such... but i enjoy mining and hodling. just no money to get decent gear, and my 100 gh's isn't exactly worth running these days. i used to dream about having a big farm, but i've had a rather rough decade, financially, so it hasn't happened. might finally have a decent job though, so who knows.

I doubt that we can expect bitcoin to serve as any kind of stable currency for a long time. It is too god damned small.
Furthermore, I have no problems with current BTC prices, even though we seem to be towards the bottom of a correction channel. We are a whole hell of a lot better off, so it seems to me, than we were between December 2018 and March 2019...... like double better, so I really cannot appreciate reasons to be complaining regarding the bearwhales that are going to try to manipulate prices down as far as they can and for as long as they can, and even though I have no clue about when they are going to run out of coins to dump, it does seem that sooner or later the momentum is going to change and bearwhales who are betting upon further down or any other fence sitters, no coiners or bitcoin naysayers might end up getting fucked to the extent that they have not adequately prepared themselves for UP.

In a long shameful convoluted story, I find myself with a new tricked out MacBook Pro 16", and a Time Machine brain transplant from the last machine. Not yet fully cloned. New MBP runs only Catalina. While it is not really well documented, there is a workaround.
Apple has created a new type of symlink-like filesystem construct. Using this synthetic link, one can create a 'ghost link' in the root of the filesystem. This link can redirect to another place in your filesystem, like any normal symlink. It does not, however, exist on disk. It is instantiated at boot. One configures these links through an fstab-like mechanism: a new file /etc/synthetic.conf.
After creating a link using this mechanism and rebooting, my filesystem looks like it used to. I am now happily restoring over 400,000 files -- over 220GB -- from Time Machine to this new phantom filesystem location. So all my old scripts and such should work just fine.

Why Apple's second-level support was utterly unaware of this workaround is a mystery. But there you go.

Caught the flu twice in December. Developed into a nasty dry cough towards the end of fighting off the second flu. Never felt worse in my life before. Doctor diagnosed me with "Post Viral Fatigue Syndrome" and the lung x-rays results showed signs of mild bronchitis.
Dude put me on Z-Pak for 5 days (antibiotic), Albuterol inhaler, and QVAR inhaler corticosteroid to reduce inflamation. Platelet counts are higher than normal, likely due to fighting off the infections, but seeing a hematologist some-time this week to get the official rundown - Currently taking baby asprin every morning to thin my blood out a bit in the meantime.
Getting old fucking sucks.
z pak here too, among other things. like you said in a later post, test wasn't clear, so overly cautious. yea, this was nasty... and i'm not that old, i can't imagine for people my parents age.

This sounds like the same flu that swept the southern hemisphere last winter ... the nasty dry cough will linger for weeks and relapse flu bouts for 2, 3 or even 4 relapses about 2-3 weeks apart.
Also watch out for people with heart conditions, the virus appears to be attacking lung and heart muscles, cases of flu-induced heart failure were being reported, especially amongst the elderly.
