Well my take on the current state of play is like this:

People who had the inside knowledge on what was brewing in China shorted and dumped to induce some fear into the market.

Then starts the FUD, drip, drip, drip. Price goes down accordingly. Then the actual news was confirmed. Down some more. Nom,nom, cheap coins.

Then Jamie Demon, who probably also had the inside line on China has a go. Even cheaper coins. All while the price hasn't gone anywhere near parabolic for this cycle. Banks are scared, with profit and revenue down. To them $180bn is a big fucking pie. Governments are worried too, as we all know. They would all love to see crypto fail. And yet some people still want even cheaper coins, cue more FUD about China banning mining. These people are either playing the long game and don't care if they push it into a bear market, or they think it's gonna moon.

I know what I'm betting on. If I'm wrong and it goes down, I ain't too bothered. I'm in it for the long haul.

So way back in 2013, I devised a little unscientific theory as a way to measure the growth of Bitcoin and thus it's supported price floor.

I didn't have an accurate way to measure the exact number of participants and accounts across the world, so I just used Coinbase as a reference.

I surmised that for each 5X multiple in number of accounts, the price would be supported at around a 10X from the last price floor.

In 2015, Coinbase had around 2M accounts, and the price floor was found ~$250/btc.

Now they have approximately 10M accounts, and the price floor probably sits around $2500/btc (a rough guess).

So to extrapolate, in order to reach a support of $25k/btc, Coinbase would need to hit around 50M accounts.

Can we do it in the next 2-3 years?  I think it's possible. In 4-5 years I think it's a lock.

Well, my unscientific back-of-the-napkin model does kind of take havings roughly every 4 years into account. It sort of assumes that we have a halving event 6-12 months before a new major run up. Otherwise, I think it would take roughly 10X more accounts for a 10X increase in price floor.

Even with an exponential growth model, it seems that there is a throttle bottleneck to how fast Bitcoin popularity and usage will ramp. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that participating in the Bitcoin ecosystem is neither free (must pay-to-play) nor currently open to everyone (e.g., in order to get access to btc through main brokerage channels you must be 18+ years old, you must have a bank account, you must supply proper identification, etc., etc.). As well as the skeptical, tentative nature of an emerging new asset class, so much media press negativity, draconian regulations, etc.

Not merely for decades, from the very beginning. Fiat systems always fail, without exception. They are designed that way. And this time will be the biggest fiat bubble in all of history. It will be glorious.

Anecdote. Years ago I sent someone some coin. I had to insist he get himself an address. Long story short, he's an IT guy and he forgot his "wallet code".

I first talked to my colleagues about Bitcoin back in 2015. I was laughed at, ridiculed, called a fool, and even accused of supporting drug dealers and pedophiles... I stopped talking about it until early 2017, when our team leader at work asked about it. This time my colleagues were not so eager to joke and laugh about it, but still didn't accept it. After explaining to him about how it works and how to get it, he thought about it, told me something about Ethereum and whether he should get that instead, and eventually chickened out and didn't buy anything. He considered 1 BTC to be too expensive for him at that time (it was around 800 €/coin then). I explained that he could buy a fraction of it, but he never did. He was then transferred to another department and I never saw him again.

At that time, early 2017, when Bitcoin was mentioned again, I had an idea, which I heard in one of Andreas Antonopoulos's talks. I decided to offer the equivalent of 1 € worth of BTC to each person I discuss Bitcoin with. I remember installing wallets on their smartphones and doing the transfers. They all gathered around me screaming "I want it too!" like crazy. I remember the amount I gave them was something like 0.0012 BTC each (which was 1 € at the time).

Guess what? Now, after 10 months, that amount of 0.0012 BTC has a value of 6 €, and I'm sure they've been watching it rise to that value and realizing what they've missed! Many of them have already asked me how to get more and even apologized for being so harsh and dismissive. Well, now I just say "just Google it, mate." Can't be bothered. I do help in many cases when I see genuine interest, but to those that joked and laughed, I let them learn their lesson.

Now, Santa last evening gave me a new hard drive to replace the one in my old computer that crashed. I have since bought a new computer with Windows 10 installed, and that OS is a piece of shit, it kidnaps my computer for hours and it changes my settings and puts back things that I have removed, and you can't disable updates. And now I have learned that the CPU might spy on me. So that computer is going to be used for mining Bgold instead.

Since there seems to be some computer savvy guys on here I'm asking your advice.
I'm thinking of installing PureOS as my OS on my new hard drive. Are there any issues with that OS? like popular applications not working?

The new shit computer will get a GPU installed (also courtesy of Santa ) and will be used for mining Bgold. I have never mined before and I'm doing it mostly because I want the experience.
I know absolutely nothing about mining and will just follow the steps in the Bgold tutorial without actually knowing what I'm doing.
My question is, does it matter how the computer is connected to the router? Is it enough to use a wifi connection?
Or must I use a cable?

Yeah, I had Windows 7 on the old computer before the HD crashed, and it worked fine. But they tried real hard to get me to update to 10, but I resisted.
However for mining only I see no reason to uninstall, if I'm wrong I will definitely try and install Windows 7 if I can find it.

And I'm mining for fun and the experience so Bgold is as good as any other shit coin as I see it.

Granted, I "modified" my OS so it doesn't auto update, and turned off all the suspect "malware / spyware". I confirmed it with network tools and wireshark and ethernet sniffers. Nothing in or out (not even encrypted unless I was using tor or a VPN).

Of course, I don't use IE. I just use Windows as the OS, everything else is an app ... firefox, bitcorns, gpg ... all free too. Got the license from school.

Oh man, really sorry to hear that. From the moment I read your first post about this, I knew it was a losing battle. It's tough to outrun the network (even the slow and overloaded Bitcoin network). It was inevitable that he would get a confirmation before you could act...

Some advice to help avoid situations like this:

1. Buy (and use) a TREZOR or Ledger h/w wallet.
2. Use a good Anti-Virus s/w (not M$ SUCKurity ASSentials or DAFTender).
3. Train yourself to sense intrusions (needs years of experience).
4. Be paranoid about the organization of apps and files on your PC.
5. Don't use Windows 10 if possible. It significantly compromises (3) and (4) among other negatives.
6. Online and PC/phone wallets are to hold small amounts of coins, and only temporarily.
7. Buy (and use) a TREZOR or Ledger h/w wallet.

Again, really sorry for the loss, and I hope it was a small percentage of your total portfolio.
