So why would Stamp and other exchanges rally too? There was no information released regarding them. Stamp already fixed its withdrawals days ago. And IF gox withdrawals are fixed all it means is there are more coins on the market getting dumped into Stamp.

Because of the tighter withdrawal limits.

Exactly. And besides the market was so oversold it's looking for any excuse to go back up. I expect to see a couple green daily candles from now on and after that it mostly depends on how MtGox comes out of all this mess whether we dive back down or not.

I'm positively surprised that Mark won't open the floodgates of hell....yes, I don't have anything in MTgox....

I've thought over my trading history and realize 80%-90% if my profits are all made during new-ATH rallies and the huge crashes afterwards. I perform very poorly during bear markets and consolidations, and make bank during the rally/crash conditions, doubling my coins exponentially every week. So I should probably just make a resolution to only trade during those short 2-3 month time periods and then leave whenever there is a bear market. Maybe I use the 1W MACD to determine this.

Of course you do. Any mug can make gains when liquidity is pouring into the market. In a bear market when liquidity is being drained from the market, only those ballsy and disciplined enough to sell and buy the utmost extremities of the trend line will make money, other than that the odds are stacked against you and you are just whale fodder. I made most of my gains from Nov 20th onwards up until mid Dec (I sold high and got very lucky with buy-ins at near base of Dec 5th crash). Since then profits have been low and my recent max leveraged short trade that I opted to finally hold out on, got absolutely fkn slaughtered by the time I tapped out which takes me firmly into net loss territory since 2014.

Lesson learned. Same lesson as is occurring in your head and the same lesson that countless others have been taught. Don't trade a blatant bear market. The result of this is more and more liquidity leaves Bitcoin until the point where the splashes made by greedy whales become less and less pronounced due to less and less liquidity reacting to them. No ultimate bottoming out of any market entailed a 45% swing from bottom within a few days, not even a past Bitcoin bottom.

Have also noticed that Bitstamp are becoming tighter and tighter with allowing deposits to register in peoples accounts. I sent over just $3K the other day and again, they are wanting me to 'prove' where I am getting it from. I told them to fuck off. I am getting my money back, I can't see how I am going to get any amount of money back onto that exchanges cos no way am I giving them any personal details of the description that they are asking for. Bet there are quite as lot of Bitcoiners who are feeling the same. Not exactly conducive to increased adoption is it?

Ummm...the bear market is over.

Zoom out your chart to W1, 3D, or 1D scale, and maybe you'll see why a drop is due. I think someone forgot to release the 'news' that was supposed to go with the drop but it's happening anyway because of the trend.

I don't think we are going to drop significantly anymore. Your magic graphs don't tell everything, even though bitcoin is highly manipulated. Black wallet, black market, p2p-exchanges will make bitcoin stronger than ever. Maybe they scare some investors but I thing bitcoin can't rely on regulators good will.

I predict a crash to $300-$350 in 7 days.

Based on the remarkable similarities in these 2 charts:

Double bottom at $2 in 2011.
Our progress so far in the bottoming process.

Somebody with more visual tools could clarify and present the case. I will have to explain:

2011:
- 3 RED weeks ending with a flashcrash to $4
- 2 GREEN weeks recovery
- 4 RED weeks ending in a flashcrash to $2
- GREEN-RED-GREEN pattern in recovery
- another flashcrash to $2.

2014:
- 4 RED weeks ending with a flashcrash to $400
- 2 GREEN weeks recovery
- 4 RED weeks ending in a flashcrash to $340
- GREEN-2 REDS-GREEN pattern in recovery
- ?

(to be found out in 7 days.... Wink )

While a retest of 339.79 is certainly possible, there is one key difference here namely the multiple tests of 380 - 400 in this bear market. This parallel did not occur in 2011. So it is quite possible that 1) We see yet another test of 380 - 400 before an upward breakout or 2) we just see an upward breakout. This bear is starting to look very tried to me. By the way the fall of 2011 is when I started buying Bitcoin so the charts are good for nostalgia. I say hold / long term buy.

Edit: As for China, this is starting to look like the little boy who cried wolf, with the wolf replaced by a bit bull. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmxKWEqBN-8

Fiat is trickling, not flooding in. It's not a rocket, it's a Zimmer frame. But it might finally be heading in the right direction.

The question is can the fiat trickle cover the proportion of 4000+ BTC mined daily that are sold

Yup. Good question.
She's gone quiet from the moment we went up.
Considering she lives in a fantasy world she probably just couldn't believe we went up and refused to buy back in as her buy orders at 280 weren't filled and now she finally woke up realizing she has a big problem.
It's quite hilarious how she has dissapeared since.

Still no ideas of where this rally is coming from (China, West, ...), nor why?

It seems that the price stops increasing for 2-3 hours around 19:00 UTC every day, which is 03:00 in China.  So I would think that China STILL sets the price.

Perhaps some Chinese exchange already started operating offshore, and is in beta-test by selected clients?

Its just a pump nothing else. Anyone checking the source of this rumour can see it. Well Jesus coin (XC) did have a nice pump to the other day Market cap of over 13 mil now 5

What do you mean checking the source? The source is its listed on finex under performance summary, thats true i can see it on my account. The fact its probably just a pump still remains.
Nothing shows on my account. Seems it was a marketing gag to get some action happening on Bitfinex. It worked

He looks a lot like Anders Breivik, I reckon.

I almost hate to say this; however, I cannot resist.

If someone who looks like this guy in this picture has a lot of money, then he needs to put that money to work for his own benefit, health wise.  I am NOT talking about the genetic factors that cannot be changed, and I am sorry if there are unknown genetic factors present.

What I am suggesting is that this person, seemingly admittedly Rpietila, is looking too sickly for a 34 year old in the 21st century.  These days we have longer longevities, but this picture looks like a person who is nearly on his death bed - pale and a kind of skinny fat.

Rpietila, I make this suggestion to you without hate and with your best interest in mind - b/c I would like you to be around in 1 year or 10 years or more, if possible.

I would prescribe changing some of the health factors that are within your control, and you have additional control over several lifestyle matters b/c you are supposedly well off in the money department (you do NOT have to work, if you do NOT want to).

Most important is diet.  You need to make sure that you are getting sufficient quantities of meat and fat in your diet.  Red meat, fatty fish would be good to make sure as staples.   Some green vegetables would be good too.  Cut out foods with added sugars, and especially a large number of processed foods, including those with fillers such as wheat, corn and soy.  Try to limit your carbs to less than 35% of your diet.  Actually less than 20% would be o.k. too, but up to 35% is acceptable so long as those carbs are mostly whole foods, and are not dominated by processed foods and sugars.

2nd :  Sleep.  Most people need at least 6 hours per day, but 6-9 hours may be o.k.  More than 9 hours may NOT be good.

3rd:  Exercise.  Of course this can vary based on your total activities, but from the look of the picture, you have NOT been getting too much exercise in recent years.  At minimum you should be getting 2 hours per week over 3 days.  I would recommend more however, such as 4-5 hours of exercise per week.   You do NOT want to over do exercise, b/c you need to control inflammation, especially if you are NOT used to exercise.    Also, most people need to space out their exercise in order to build in rest and recuperation times, especially as we get older. You can combine resistance training such as weights with cardio-vascular.  But since it looks like you may NOT exercise too much, you may want to warm up 5-10 minutes of cardiovascular before partaking in resistance training.  Usually, it is better to save the bulk of the cardio-vascular for the end of your work-out rather than the beginning b/c you do NOT want to wear yourself out with cardio-vascular when it appears that you may need some muscle building.

Ok, I understand that you are a troll, but still, that's ill-spirited and harsh! It is not the best picture. Lighting is bad, angle is bad, etc. Also, Risto lives in Finland, no shit he is pale Cheesy

Now this is the kind of news I like to read.

Not some hyped up merchant thingy that might or might not affect price in 2 years from now. Not some vague promise by the CEO of payebayamazon to, maybe, at some point, if it ever becomes convenient, think about integrating Bitcoin.

This is what I think should drive Bitcoin adoption in the early phase: providing the means to route around a damaged system. Hope it'll be more than just a passing fad for them.

Yes, this is excellent news!

Still expecting 440. I needed to buy in to buy stuff but with this going on I'm waiting.

Anyone have any solid news on why? Is it just day traders leaving because no money to make here?

Draw a few trend lines on bitcoinwisdom and you'll see the big dumps are aimed at breaking through them so its fairly obvious where they're coming from. Its been going on for some time, the days destroyed movements suggest they where either involved from 2009 or bough large amounts of coins from people who where. The intent is to either crush bitcoin or take it over and the coin movements suggest the latter, that they're trying to take over mining by forcing competing miners out (new hashing algorithm anyone Wink ). The dumps coming now as well as trading on other markets (forex + others) suggests funds are being pulled in to prop up US markets as they're close to the edge and Argentina's default could push them over, good for us as it leaves them in a weak position.

You can so easily hedge against that outcome. Just buy same amount of Monero as you have Bitcoin (same number fo coins). No matter which one survives, you have retained your wealth as percentage of the total.

Btw. 471 is one strong fibo line so it might not make sense to sell around that price where you should be buying.

Monero Castle:

Both we know, that a bear is not something static. The bad and clever bear only had to sell his coins on ~1000 and bought back on ~400 to have 2,5x more coins (on only one swing).

Reading "bears never learn" after a long and hard bear/consolidation market makes me a bit afraid, that market participants are losing touch with reality.

No, I don't think we will fall to levels of oblivion and I hope we will build up a stable base between 400 - 600.

[...]

The mysterious thing is that a lot of your bears will be on board of your CCMF, if and when it comes. Quite likely they would be one reason (if not the reason) of your CCMF.

Very much to the point. Really appreciate your posts in general in this thread, btw.

There was a discussion in here a while ago if it even makes sense to talk about "bulls" vs. "bears", or whether that's a gross simplification that should be avoided.. I suggested the following distinction:

(a) that as a successful trader or investor, you should strive to fall into neither camp, i.e. stay as objective wrt the market as possible, and

(b) that the only ones actually deserving the label "bull" (or "bear") are those who accuse others loudly of being a "bear" (or "bull", respectively).

(don't complain. it only looks like a paradoxical definition.)

It made sense to be a bear when the price was +900 USD and trolls screamed buy buy, but now when we are at the bottom, it doesn't make sense. Anyways, it is your choice.

http://recode.net/2014/09/08/ebay-payments-unit-braintree-to-let-merchants-accept-bitcoin/

September 8, 2014, 9:43 AM PDT

Braintree, the eBay subsidiary that runs a payment system used by popular mobile apps, plans to announce that its customers can start accepting bitcoin, according to two sources.

The move would allow websites and apps that run payments through Braintree (part of eBay’s PayPal) to start accepting bitcoin as a payment method, these people said. Braintree’s most popular customers include Uber, Airbnb and HotelTonight. It’s not clear which, if any, of these customers will choose to accept the digital currency.

The move is not expected to extend to PayPal or eBay, at least for now. One source said Braintree is working with bitcoin company Coinbase to process the bitcoin payments.

Braintree is expected to announce the news in the near future — perhaps as early as today. The Wall Street Journal first reported that Braintree was in talks with bitcoin companies to accept the digital currency.

A bitcoin is generated when computers running specialized software solve complex mathematical equations. It has gained popularity over the past year as speculators have bought the currency with the hope that its value will increase over time. Some well-known companies, including Dell and Overstock.com, have also started to accept bitcoin as a payment method. Bitcoin is currently valued at about $476, after soaring above $1100 late last year.

This means absolutely nothing. It's not a significant news at all, it will not produce buying nor selling pressure, it will just produce a small playground for speculators to play 1-2 day game with a small fluctuation.

Overstock, Expedia, and Newegg are retail places that SELL the coins people spend, PayPal is person to person where people have to BUY bitcoin to send. Not all of those people will then sell coins, therefore there would be buying pressure where with the other there is selling.
It's not that hard to understand.

Actually most businesses that "accept bitcoin" accept through Coinbase/Bitpay, and they sell the bitoins.  If the Paypal announcement is legit (and is about bitcoin), isn't PayPal simply competing with Coinbase/Bitpay?

If that is the case, Coinbase/Bitpay will be in trouble.

Even though we haven't gone up in price yet, I wonder what the ones that shorted 10K BTC are thinking now that paypal is integrating.

Any of those shorters here in this thread?  I'd love to hear your thoughts.

they shouldn't fear that process since conversion of btc back to fiat doesn't always equate to 1 for 1 rebuys of btc, the real benefit to me is the publicity it will give bitcoin, people at banks still talk of it as it's some elaborate joke.

The Paypal integration should certainly bring some validity to Bitcoin.  If Apple makes some sort of announcement tomorrow about Bitcoin that will be even better.  Apple seems to have a cult like following. Wink

But I am aware of the fact that it takes most people a year or two after first hearing about Bitcoin to actually buy any.

er I'm behind the curve here paypal  ebay annoucnes bitcoin acceptance and the price drops to 466 usd ok wtf am i missing obviously i'm an idiot...is it just seen as more pressure on coin to go straight to cash out...more pressure to sell is that it?

Searing

Too many people that believe in the theory about more merchant adoption = more selll pressure = lower prices. So they sell before prices drop.

We might see the effect of Paypal integration after the new wave of people that get in touch with BTC because of paypal and stuff really decides to invest in Bitcoin

That's right. Also, if you don't want merchant adoption...then what do you exactly want?  Grin When we have enough merchants on board, there wont be reason to convert bitcoins to fiat (I mean, merchants can buy stuff from their suppliers with bitcoins).

Apparently Scottland has had some discussion that if they were to become independent to have bitcoin as their national currency.. or some similar talks.  The chances of scottland transitioning into independence seems pretty low and the chances of bitcoin becoming scottland's currency seems pretty low, even if they were to transition into independence.

It's going to come from many different places at once.

RPGs will start using them. Kids will want them over anything else. Keep bugging their parents for some. They will grow up loving them more than inconvenient money.

I know someone who used to sell rare runescape items on ebay and he has to wait for cheques to come in the post.

Then there's the traders who will love the ETF.

Then there's the reality of borderless money coming into fruition. This is beyond what many of us can imagine. We've all heard the term "internet of money" but we haven't seen it yet. But it's coming.

The politicised amongst us will always be way ahead of our time and not part of any majority that has yet to join the movement.

Multi-sig will replace ambiguous, trust requiring, huge set-ups to become necessarily reliable. Massive projects will HAVE to happen the way people funding them agreed to.

"Leaders" will ban them, whilst lining their pockets with them.

The network will be reliable become so many of us will continue to fight for them.

In our darkest times it only ever falls to where it was about a year ago.

To the "worryers" here who own, and are losing perspective, sell what you need to to help you see more rationally.

RPG point is interesting. Perhaps, bitcoin should be used more as in-game money (is that even a word).

Lot of miners have bought their equipment using btc, so they want to earn btc not usd. Also, lot of miners don't sell everything they make, at this price, you have to be quite desperate to sell the coins.

Miners want to make a profit.  If a miner bought their equipment for 1000 BTC in January, mined 1200 BTC with it, and paid 100'000 dollars of electricity, he invested 900'000$ and got back less than 600'000$, so he lost money.    Even if he loves BTC, he would be better off today if he had kept their 900'000$ in the bank; he could buy more than 1800 BTC with it now.

Miners decide whether to keep, buy, or sell BTC just like any investor or trader.  If there are people selling for 460$ now, why wouldn't they sell too?

EDIT: they --> he

If he already had 1000 BTC (which he didn't plan to sell), he would have broke even, and has the mining equipment. May be I didn't get your point. Of course it made sense to sell when BTC was 1000 USD and buy back cheaper.

Btw: Nowadays, most of the miners won't mine as much as they paid.

just a quick thought:

it could also be possible that the manipulator is a large mining company that wants to push the price as far down as possible so that other miners get out of business and they get a bigger cut out of the cake

It very well could be. How ever, that's quite risky operation to do.

I believe it is NOT a small fish to have the equivalent of 25 to 100BTC worth of Fiat on BTC-e waiting there (tied up) and ready to buy bitcoins in the event of a flash crash... Yes, I understand that it happened twice in the last  9 months and then it happened once on the upside on the Euro market.

Gotta really spread your money around to prepare for those kindso f eventualities, and personally, I sleep much better with my money in BTC than I would with my money in FIAT on those exchanges, especially during times like these when I am of the belief that BTC prices are quite a bit below the trendline... which in my thinking at any time we could have an upward explosion in price.. and in those circumstances, I would resent having my fiat NOT working for me.

I do have cold storage but all the coins I bought before I started trading were < $100. Something in me won't let myself not hedge my position in a serious downtrend. I'm lucky I never traded on Gox... and I'm aware of the risk of keeping money on these exchanges. BUT this market is so damn juicy. If Huobi/OKcoin/Bitstamp can get down to $270-350 we could rally hard..... that'll be a trade worth taking. Otherwise I'll go back all in on a strong breakout on the daily chart. Smiley

Could you share some good hedging strategies in Bitfinex?

I meant hedging in a very general sense. By that I mean, holding dollars waiting for reentry and/or occasionally shorting, as opposed to just holding BTC. I'd consider using futures if only I could understand them (or more to the point, the psychology of that market).

In reality, and I'm sure I'm going against the grain on this forum, but the safest haven right now is the dollar. I'm still waiting for entry into long term gold and silver positions as well, but IMO those are ready to decline significantly over the next year as well.

Ok, thanks! Then we are in the same boat. I would too like to learn futures as hedging strategy.

IF we go up again a few 100, which as you can see is gonna be very hard because these traders and dumpers completely destroyed confidence, then the following will happen. All idicators besides price this past year have been growing strong. Price can't lag adoption forever.

Bubble? or a broken global financial system?

the end of the ASIC era means that the race of buying the new ASICs in order to be the first to profit has came to an end...we always discussed that there will be an end to this race when Moree's law is actual, the first ASIC was an avalon 90nm and AM 120nm the second was a BFL 65nm at the time the 28nm technology was available in market but not as a Bitcoin ASIC, so naturally people raced to build an ASIC as efficient as possible, but Moree's law suggest that when we hit the 22nm (the available technology today) the network will stabilize because there will be no technology improvement for some time (2 years) unless the price sky rocket so people bring more hashing power but the same technology online.

Good explanation. Lots of money was going to mining gear. Perhaps, now those funds will go directly to bitcoin.

Anyway, clearly the adoption is slowing down or the new comers think Bitcoin is overvalued and this is why there is almost no support for the price, my biggest fear is that only we (bears) early adopters who sold before are providing the existing weak support for the current price with our open orders... which is really scary.

Could you define 'early adopter'?

For months all the idiots here were praying for cheap coins. Every crash was amazing news. Best thing ever.
They expected that as soon as they bought a few "cheap coins" the price would move to 1k again.

Now they found out those days are over and the price isn't going anywhere but down.
People are getting out. There are no big players waiting to get in. There is no Wallstreet. There is no secret accumulation. It all turned out complete bs.

Bitcoin is dying. The party is over. The only thing it's good for are daily pump and dumps.

Nobody in real life is interested in Bitcoin. Apple pay did in a short time what Bitcoin couldn't achieve in years.
Unless you want to send money overseas and often there is no reason to use Bitcoin.
Average Joe doesn't give a shit about fees or decentralization and all the other Bitcoin selling points.

It's over.

I tried to help the few delusional bulls who just won't give up but they don't appreciate my warnings very much. Ah well, your money. I don't care really.
I'll come back every 50 dollar drop for some entertainment. So long and thanks for buying my coins at 400. Poor schmucks.

Good luck with your pump and dump coin.

I feel sorry for all the idiots who sold at these ridiculous prices and i will laugh at all the bears who will get caught in trap after trap the coming weeks.

The only winners are the holders (like me) and the people who pick up the last cheap coins while they can.

We're going up and it's confirmed!

None at the moment. Not sure if i will buy back again.  I invest in other things now.

Really looks like that bitcoin failed as an experiment

I think that it is still working as the technical experiment that it was meant to be: a test of whether the PoW/reward/majority protocol would indeed motivate miners to mine, and prevent sabotage of a decentralized ledger.

Bitcoin was not meant to be a replacement or alternative to credit cards, a sound investment, a way to evade law enforcement, to weaken governments, to turn losers into millionaires, etc..  Others appropriated it and have been trying to redefine it as some or all of these things.

The technical experiment has worked for five years in spite of (not because of) its massive "adoption" by half a million people for those purposes.  From the purely technical point of view, the only problem that has surfaced in these 6 years is the centralization of mining, due to use of specialized chips and economies of scale.   That development was not expected, and may be technically its failure.

Bitcoin may be failing only for some of the things it was never meant to be used for.

please explain to me how further delay of something that people are eagerly anticipating for a boost in prices is positive. Clearly their last submission was not approved or they would not need to submit another one. Clearly this pushes back the timeline.  At best it's neutral if you were not expecting an imminent launch.

The whole news article was complete misrepresentation and omitted most of the facts. That is spinning ... or just piss poor journalism, probably the latter  Wink

Here is a diff of this latest amended proposal (version 5) and the previous one (version 4):
http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/2qxgah/diff_of_the_newest_winklevoss_filing_here/

They update some data about the state of bitcoin (e.g. adoption) and change the State where the fund is incorporated, from New York to Delaware.  Would this change improve the chances of approval?

The plan is still to trade the fund on NASDAQ anyway.

Could the state change be tied to the licensing issue. Delaware is the traditional state for incorporation so that would normally be neutral, but the fact that they changed it this late in the game suggests something is the matter.

yup, they don't like it atm, changes required before approval

Yea, and that is not a small change at all. That is a structural change, not just shifting a little bit of wording around. Tough to know because we aren't prevue to the discussions, but just my two cents as a lawyer.

as you know a couple of words mean a lot, crossing the t's etc, i'm sure they want it to proceed but with what limitations

IMO this change proves the ETF will be approved sooner or later.

How the f--- did you come to that conclusion, exactly? They've fundamentally changed their filing -- they didn't just cross a "t" or dot an "i." No, they subjected themselves to an entirely different state of incorporation at the umpteenth hour. Logical reasoning is not a core criterion for becoming a Bitcoiner, is it?

If the SEC had decided they wouldn't approve a math-based assets ETF they would've made it clear to the Winklevoss instead of suggesting corrections to their filings.

Logic would suggest that no amount of countless lawyers hours at a hefty price should be spent further pursuing a hopeless goal. Clearly the Winks have some indications that following due process their project has a chance and will ultimately be approved.

I'm glad that someone gets this  Smiley Happy New Year to all of you...bulls, bears and pigs!

What a bunch of overly emotional pussies many bitcoiners are. If you are holding and feeling fear right now, that is the plan. The myriad bears and trolls in here are part of the scam to get your coins cheap. It's time to hold and buy like never before with money you can afford to lose. How do you imagine it felt to buy at 1.99 in 2011? Do you think it was scary back then to buy then when similar sentiment was running high? No one is going to get rich easy, it will take balls of steel (right Jorge? Cheesy)

< 4B Market cap is peanuts. The concept is being more proven as time goes on and the network is expanding with buying bitcoin being less and less of a risk as time goes on.  We are very close to bitcoin 1.0

It's one of those things when everybody can be 99.9% sure about something and doesn't really care (they accept it as a part of "the game") but they want to brutally execute the man on the spot as soon as he admits it.

Yea seems like someone is trying to hold the price down by flashing ~700 coins.

Same as it ever was since June '14, holding it down until all the wall st. insiders have loaded up. Lawsky's delay, delay, delay on the rulebook is keeping the institutions (client money) themselves out until they have "clarity" so same effect. When the insiders are loaded then regulation fog, FUD and downside manipulation all will suddenly disappear and the institutional pump begins.

There you have some wise words.

Everyone's eyes should be glued to the charts at this pivotal point.

Could you elaborate more please.
Daily and weekly Bollinger bands are at the tightest levels they've been at for years. This is in addition to the volume flattening out over a long time. A breakout here is likely to set the tone for the coming weeks and months.

Considering that daily PSAR is bearish and daily MACD turned negative, while price is hugging the lower daily BB, the likely scenario is bearish.

Bearish scenario is too obvious...so up UP!  Grin

not be taking that choice out of the hands of use

A key goal, therefore, is to transition the speed limit from software control to market control.
Remove the policy wedge. Let the free market decide the long term shape of bitcoin’s
transaction fee market, level of security and level of decentralization.
Miner voting was chosen for BIP 100 as a “lesser of the evils” Stakeholder voting is appealing,
"

"This does not give the miners “complete power.” Miner income is in the long run aligned with
users in a cooperative market relationship, even if short term counterincentives exist. Users
signal economically via the market or directly via email and social media! their views on miner
behavior which must be signalled up front, months in advance of any change. While imperfect,
miner voting works; it has been field tested (BIP 34).
BIP 100 is a slow, paced transition to free market control."

The best solution so far.
Great job Jeff!

Civil engineer: Hey, Boss. Traffic on the bridge is increasing by 50% per month. Shouldn't we widen it?

Bureaucrat: Ha! That bridge has excess capacity. If traffic gets too high, we'll just increase the tolls. Most of those schmucks don't really need to go anywhere anyway.

Civil engineer: Do we know that for sure? What if there is an evacuation or something?

Bureaucrat: That bridge was intentionally designed with low capacity to prevent invasions! Widening it would be a dangerous departure from historic bridge operations.

Civil Engineer: Aren't bridges supposed to be used to facilitate travel?

Bureaucrat: Yes, but only the right sort of travel. That's for me to decide! If traffic gets too heavy, and tolls get too expensive, the people can use buses. Too many single passenger cars anyway.

Civil engineer: Do you own a bus company?

Bureaucrat: Purely coincidental! I'm just guarding against bridgebuilder centralization.

Civil engineer: I see. No conflict of interest there. What's the name of your company anyway, Busstream?

Bureaucrat: BridgestreamTM, Smartass.

XT takes Bitcoin and modifies some of its core consensus rules. Right now, it happens to be compatible with Bitcoin in most cases. But because it uses different rules, it can (depending on what miners do) split into a totally separate currency. Therefore, XT is not Bitcoin. A similar sort of thing was done with Feathercoin, which split off from Litecoin.

Some sort of block-size limit is necessary because if miners make blocks too large for a long period of time, then this makes it difficult for people to run full nodes. (In other words, block size is a negative externality suffered by full nodes due to the actions of miners and transaction-makers.) If not enough of the economy is backed by independent full nodes, then Bitcoin is totally insecure for everyone (see here and here). And there's no reason to think that miners would voluntarily keep blocks small enough -- they don't have the right incentives. So the network needs to enforce some limit. In the long-run the limit can't stay at 1 MB forever (and Satoshi acknowledged this), but this works well enough for now.

People often think that Bitcoin is ruled by miners, but this is wrong. Miners are merely employees of the network. Even if every miner decided to make 2 MB blocks right now, everyone running a Bitcoin full node would simply ignore their blocks. Bitcoin is composed of immutable rules (called "consensus rules") that all full nodes enforce no matter what. Modifying these rules requires creating a separate currency and having everyone else move to this separate currency. If pretty much everyone agrees in advance that it's OK to do this, then this is a consensus hardfork, and the result is still Bitcoin. If there is significant controversy, then the new currency is not Bitcoin. See this diagram.

Quote
And to me it seems that the block size limit would be a problem right? Wont it either dramatically increase fees and/or causr transaction favoritism/selection? Bitcoin is special because all transactions are treated equally?

If blocks sometimes get full, then paying a too-low fee might significantly delay your transaction. If blocks are consistently full, then if you don't pay a sufficient fee, your transaction might never confirm. The exact fee required will depend on how many other transactions are being created and how much block space is left. Increasing the max block size will allow for lower fees.

Bitcoin is special because it is decentralized and to a very large extent incorruptible by humans, not because it might in some cases allow cheap transactions. If it can be done safely, the max block size should be increased if fees become a significant problem. But if the max block size is at the maximum safe size, then we shouldn't abandon the decentralization, security, etc. of the base Bitcoin system in order to achieve lower fees. We should instead look for some other solution. And there are in fact a variety of solutions in the works, both to make max block size increases safer (eg. IBLT and/or weak blocks) and to reduce the number of on-blockchain transactions that people need to perform (eg. Lightning). And if these "perfect" solutions are insufficient, there are various imperfect solutions which increase scalability at some security cost for its users. There might be some hiccups along the way, but I am very confident that the Bitcoin currency/ecosystem can both remain secure+decentralized and eventually scale to encompass all world transactions if necessary.

The max block size is planned to be effectively increased to about 2 MB sometime this year with the SegWit softfork. See: https://bitcoin.org/en/bitcoin-core/capacity-increases . An increase to much more than this is not viewed as safe by many experts.

Actually...I like that. Am I a cripplecoiner now?

Eventually the alt market has to go the other way. But if I knew how I would have shorted the lot of them ages ago and gone broke. So who knows when.

That's true. ETH just look very heavy now. I'm not currently shorting, but if ETH breaks ATH again, I will.

crazy, but nice to see that BTC is able to hold its ground

+1

It's pretty much rock solid in spite of some fairly large splashes from eth.

seems to be fresh fiat thats driving ETH, otherwise it could have been really ugly.

Are you sure it's fresh fiat that drives ETH? I think it's just the same traders selling and rebuying, shorting, getting margin called etc.

https://snag.gy/4tpVj5

Hmm... I was counting on a Chinese pump to break above 2820 CNY within 2 days. If this won't happen, then the market will have made a lower high,
and then probably a lower low, which means a downtrend will become apparent.

IMO the point is to get the most out of Bitcoin until the halving event. no new miners allowed until then.

Interesting theory.

ELI5 who I wire actual irl money to, and why it won't get stolen immediately.

1) The bitcoins are programmed to be released only when two of three people agree that the money has been received.
2) When the money gets to your bank account you and the buyer release your coins.
3) If you lie about it, the buyer and a random aribitrator release your coins.

Not sure that I would trust it...  but seems legit.

Yep. I have downloaded it but not used yet. There's still something like 0.5 BTC limit/transaction in the beta version. I think decentralized exchanges are very important because they kind of make bitcoin(crypto) impossible to ban.

The amount of FUCD and general misinformed/malicious negativity that has been spread about the halving means there will be a relief rally of some sort when it turns out to be a nothing more than a quite boring, uneventful clicking over of the time-stamping calendar and everything works as advertised on the tin.

For those of us that have been around for the first one it isn't even a consideration but there are probably a lot of new faces who will be apprehensive about the deflationary mechanism in the bitcoin algorithm until they see it work with their own eyes.
Actually, the last halving coincided with the release of ASICS, which probably smoothed over the transition. So we might see a bit more of a slowdown this time around, but I don't expect any major issues.

Well the ASICs started getting released a few months after the halving (Avalon) and not really in large quantities. It all happened around the april 2013 bubble. In early 2013 FPGAs still dominated the mining scene, with GPUs switching to LTC (Scrypt). It became an ASIC only game in late 2013 when they started being available en masse. So a full year after the halving.
Ok, it appears you are right.  Halving end of November and Garzik got the first ASIC for reviewing in January.  I still wonder if some of the producers might not have used the preorder money to manufacture the chips and already started mining before announcing successful production and shipping to customers.

FPGAs never dominated. The were not that much more efficient compared to GPUs.

They say the token will have a blockchain, it will start at $1 value, and they will let people trade it (possibly apart from US customers). That suggests it will be like a normal coin with a wallet. If Bitfinex lets people withdraw the tokens then other exchanges will probably start trading it.

where do they say this token will have a blockchain?

In this comment, they say it will be a token on a blockchain so I assume that means it will have its own blockchain unless its like a counterparty asset.

https://www.reddit.com/r/BitcoinMarkets/comments/4wng7l/site_relaunch_bitfinex_blog/d68xbcm

I assume that means it will be a coin premined with the number of tokens they have issued. I don't know if it will be POW, POS, or mineable. All they say is it will have a blockchain, and I can't think of any point of one unless it allows customers to withdraw their tokens to their own wallet.

The tokens name is BFX Omni...so it is OMNI platforms asset (I believe OMNI is former Mastercoin).

remember when we had problems with fiat not getting to exchanges fast enough (huge backlogs at mtGox and so on?)

I think we might have the opposing problem: BTC not getting to exchanges fast enough to stop this rocket.

Yes, that might be the case this time. Now fiat->btc is not a problem anymore. It's crazy how much bitcoin ecosystem has grown during last 3 years  Shocked

Us old timers would think that with bitcoin at an almost 4 year high, it should be fluctuating wildly. Up 20% one hour, down 30% the next day, that sorta thing. But the price for a long time now has been ROCK SOLID. It's climbing, but slowly and steadily.

Just proves, once again, that Honey Badger don't care about anyone's expectations.

IMO if we go parabolic, you'll get some volatility  Grin

Someone took a risk and set their blocksize larger than 1mb.  It was a foolish thing to do with the current state of the blocksize debate, but it only hurt the miner who chose that setting.

Isn't it the case that this was a *bug* in BU code, rather than the pool operator going gung-ho with larger block sizes?

AFAIK it was a bug. No need to sugar coat it.

"confirmed"
is a reference to a long time member named proudhon, who trolled the threads "confirming" all kinds of of FUD, mostly about the china ban. i think at one occasion his FUD even made it to a news article. when i was new the guy sometimes scared the shit out of me because his FUD was somewhat ambitious.

Ah yes, the Bitcointalk Troll hall of fame.

Today's trolls are so lame by comparison. They can't hold a candle to the likes of Proudhon, Electric Mucus, Jaroslaw, or even more recent ones like NotLambChop.

They really applied themselves to denigrating Bitcoin.

lol, instapumped my blood pressure reading all those names in one sentence. but i think you cannot include nlc.

What NLC lacked in class and style he/she/it made up for with ruthless persistence. Most dedicated troll I have ever seen.

I didn't like NLC. She was/is brilliant, so good, great, great she was/is.

In all honesty, even though I already put in my guess, I predict the next ATH will not be until 2020  Undecided

I fear another 2 year bitcoin hibernation period before much more amazing prices. We have lived through that 4 year cycle a few times already, I have little doubt it won't happen again.

I'm still holding though. But this time I will not have a job when it hits the 2 year low to buy all of those cheap coins.

I also think the same. We are starting a brutal bear market which will last 6 - 24 months.
