Bitcoins - not even Gox can dirty them.

While all miners work from the most recently discovered block (think of it as the "original" block), the selfish mining process begins when a pool of miners discovers a new block and doesn't publish it. The selfish pool then begins working on discovering yet another block, mining from this hidden one. Meanwhile, the rest of the "honest" miners are still wasting resources mining from the original block.

Can you mine FROM a "hidden" block? This makes no sense to me.

Sure, you can mine a block, not publish it, and continue mining. But unless your pool has 51% of the network, the odds are the rest of the network will invalidate the block you are hiding, and then you've just lost a block and have to start over. It does nothing to harm the network, just yourself.

Creative trolls can be interesting. Just spamming "crash incoming" several times every page is not creative.

The more it goes up, the less I want to sell.

It apparently is related to mining pools dumping there nice new coins directly onto the exchange. So apparently with minted coin, they need 100 confirmations before they can be spent? So he mixes your transfer out with the new mints, and presto...you are stuck waiting 3 days for your coins...

The solution is trivial. 2 hot wallets. All deposits go into one wallet, then when matured, then transfer to the other wallet. All withdrawls come out of the second hot wallet. Problem solved.

I'm a little afraid the price will go straight to $x,000 and never come back, with me never having bought any Bitcoins.

Right, so don't go all-or-nothing. Buy some now, and if it does go down buy more. If it goes up, you'll be glad you at least have some.

Not sure if your intention is to argue for or against me, but that exactly shows why the 7 tps limit is by design (thus should not be removed to ensure decentralization, another key point in bitcoin design) and makes it impossible for it to compete with credit card companies.

Who says bitcoin is competing with credit card companies? They both serve very different purposes.

Gox is a USD black hole. USD can't get out. The problem started 6 months ago, and it's just getting worse.

I think this chart is pretty interesting, may signal that we're not done correcting yet. Someone smarter than me have any insights?

To me it looks like flat periods at the x10 lines for a few months, then run up to the next x10. Flat at .1, 1, 10, 100, and now flat at 1k. Let it settle for a month or two around 1k, then it'll jump up to the next, at 10k.

Wrong. Do you even have any idea how profitable just credit card fraud is? The credit card fraud in a single year alone absolutely dwarfs the entire bitcoin ecosystem. And this goes on every year, non stop. You obviously have no clue what you're talking about. Credit cards basically have their private keys printed on the front of the card. Every time you use a credit card you are at risk of having it stolen. Bitcoin actually reduces fraud. You can purchase anything from anywhere, and not ever risk your private key being taken during the purchase. Bitcoin market cap: $7B
Credit card fraud just last year alone: $11B

Fact: more money is lost in a single year due to credit card fraud.

And concerning your further idiotic estimates, it doesn't matter how much Bitpay claims to process. Bitpay is one very small piece of the bitcoin world. blockchain.info estimates nearly 100 million processed per day. And that's only counting actual on-chain transactions. There are countless more off-chain transactions. Your 400 million per year is just more of your bullshit. It's more like 100x that much.

doubtful that the chinese will speed us through 4000 CNY.

massive barrier there, i think the west need to drag china from 3999 to 5001 before they will start carrying again.

Chinese are very superstitious, and the number 4 is very bad to them.

I'd be fine with the west taking us to 5000 CNY.

Don't be stupid.  There is a major difference between selling at a 'small' loss (i.e., just in the red), vs. selling for nothing.  Mining costs absolutely do put a floor on what miners will be willing to sell coins on the market.  The floor was around 200 just last fall, and was tested multiple times.  Now hashrate has risen significantly since then.

And with the new higher-efficiency miners coming, the electricity cost to produce a bitcoin is about 10% of its current value. We're way above the potential price floor. This current rally is going to cause a lot of new miners to come online and drive the difficulty way up.

Exchanges love pump-n-dump scamcoins. They make money on the pump, they make money on the dump.

He tried to cherry-pick + doesn't know how to read charts Sad

Says the guy that cherry-picks when he posts a graphic.

I might have made a typo. Here, check my work:

Mar 15:
BTC = $417.24
ETH = .03076570 BTC = $12.836680668

1000 / 417.24 = 2.396702138 BTC
1000 / 12.836680668 = 77.901758707 ETC

Jun 15:
BTC = $681.89 * 2.396702138 = $1634.287220881
ETH = $18.49 * 77.901758707 = $1440.403518492

Ok, not as bad. ETH is getting a big boost on BTC's coattails, but BTC still outperforms. The ETH pump is over. Go back to the altcoin forum.

That's how all altcoins go. We've seen it thousands of times before. There's an initial pump, then they fade into oblivion. ETH got it's pump 3 months ago. Since then it's been basically flat.

How many of those big miners who mine the majority of coins actually sell them?

Probably most, or they won't be a miner for long. With difficulty always increasing, miners need to be continually investing in new hardware. Big miners have low hosting costs, so most of their profit is going to be re-invested in hardware, and not much is going to be left for savings.

Even 5 years from now, with 2MB blocks, you'd still fit the blockchain on that old hard drive. I don't think Bitcoin should be limited by what runs on 15 year old hardware.

Besides the obvious, I'm very curious to see if I can make enough money trading bitcoin with the locals to pay for the stay. If so, why would I not live in a high quality hotel in a great country instead of a far more expensive apartment in a frozen wasteland?

But wouldn't Kraken require identity verification, thus nullifying Monero's anonymity benefits?

The more bitcoin goes up, the tighter I hold onto my coins. I once bought a yoyo for 4btc. I leave that yoyo on my desk to remind me to not make that mistake again.

Anyhow, once folks really get some concrete ideas about bitcoin's divisibility and the understanding that you can buy 1/1hundred millionth of a BTC, and maybe there is some more wider practices of pricing in lower level  (smaller) units, then it is likely going to take some time to get people to understand some of these unit confusion matters.

We only need to go up 250x to reach parity, 1 satoshi = 1 cent. Then things get extremely interesting.

What I like about BTG is the algorithm change. What I understood is that the algo change makes mining more decentral, it's possible to mine with GPU.

A warehouse full of ASICs vs a warehouse full of GPUs, the mining is still going to be centralized to massive farms to maximize profits with economies of scale.

I think you can (you must) move your bitcoins that have been in the pre-fork wallet to another new wallet, if you still have any funds there, and then paste the private key in that web form.

Yeah, that's the key (hehe). Always move your bitcoins to a new private key, then you can use the old private keys to access these altcoins.

Does your paper wallets have a QR code for the private key? If so, it's really easy if you use coinomi.
Just download it to your phone, add bitcoin, choose "sweep wallet" and read the QR code, and it's in your wallet, repeat with all the other paper wallets you have. Then add the shitcoin of your choosing and do it all over again.

Yeah, but first you have to transfer your real bitcoins to a new paper wallet. And since I don't like my coins all in one wallet, I have quite a few paper wallets.

The real question is, the minimum fee we can pay is 1 sat, there is nothing less than 1 sat, right?

No one answered this question. The minimum fee that is less than 1 sat is zero.

Yes, zero fee is a valid transaction, but very few nodes will relay the transaction, and very few miners will include it in their blocks, so you almost never see them these days.

If the transaction is valid, every node will broadcast it. The miners may not include it in a block, if there are transactions in the queue with a non-zero fee, especially while the mempool is over capacity for the next block. As soon as there is free space in the next block, zero fee transaction will get through - of course, the chance to empty the mempool below capacity is in question these days :-)

You must be an old-timer. That's the old code. The new code most nodes are running requires a 1 sat/byte fee for them to broadcast the transaction.

Isn't good enough for the performance figure, if something claims is 30% better then anything else that exists it has to be independently verified, but is good enough that it is not a scam. Guy has no reason to risk his reputation for something like that.

Bitmain, Spondoolies, etc. sent out demo units that proved they were real with real specs. If Halong Mining won't do that, I'd consider that a deal-breaker red-flag.

This rally has exposed, to me, the utter state of shambles the "major Bitcoin exchanges" are in for handling a level of action over $1M USD for personal accounts.

Talk about 0.1%'er problems, huh ?

Frankly, I'm really upset with how long it's taking me to get acknowledgements that it's "safe" for me to proceed at the level of play I'm looking for, at the various exchanges I'm "validated" at.

A bad time to invest in Bitcoin
October 8th, 2017

Back in 2013 I urged people to invest in Bitcoin.

Yesterday someone asked my cleaning lady to invest in Bitcoin.

Now if someone had asked her to accept payment in Bitcoin, or send payment in Bitcoin, then this would be compelling evidence that one should invest in Bitcoin.

But when cleaning ladies are asked to invest in Bitcoin, not a good investment.

When Bitcoin began, everyone was a miner, and everyone was a peer, everyone stored the entire blockchain. Which was great, but did not scale. And now people are struggling with half assed ideas about how to get it to scale.  Bitcoin can no longer deliver on its original promises, has not figured out what new promises to make, and many of the new promises are unworkable, or are scams, or are likely to turn into scams.

When that blog was posted the price was ~$5k. Now it's ~$17k. I hope the cleaning lady took the "other" person's advice to invest.

2. They are now getting very slow for withdrawals - over a week now to even confirm (USD) withdrawal - let alone see it in your bank.  I don't know about SEPA, as I no longer use this method (see 3 below).

It might be due to the round-about way it has to go for you. I'm getting USD withdrawals to the US confirmed in a day.

Yes, on Bitstamp, International Bank withdrawal, USD balance to a US bank. I just placed a withdrawal Wed, Dec 13, 2017 at 7:48 AM, received the confirmation Thu, Dec 14, 2017 at 3:30 AM. I should see it in my bank on Tuesday. So typically 4 (business) days from beginning to end.

Putting your retirement funds in new technology? That's nuts! Stash it in a variety of safer investments such as certain mutual funds and muni bonds.

Yeah, I would not recommend mining if your power costs are $.10/kwh. A serious mine should be down in the $.04 range.

You only get the coins if someone mines a block with the transaction giving you the coins. So roughly speaking, if your node is better connected (with higher power miners) than the victim's node you have a good chance of winning.

...further if the entire premise of Bitcoin is based on not trusting and verifying for yourself, then SPV wallets should not exist and everyone should be independently verifying transactions with their own full blockchain. Yet low and behold, plenty use SPV wallets for convenience.

Altcoins, tokens, blockchains...
... if bitcoin really takes off I can see lots of get-rich-quick imitators coming on the scene: gitcoin, nitcoin, witcoin, titcoin, shitcoin... Some of them are sure to attract users with promises like "Why use bitcoin, where you can only generate 50 bitcoins every few months? Use shitcoin instead, and you'll get 51 shitcoins every 2 minutes".

Of course the cheap imitators will disappear as quickly as those 1990s "internet currencies" like flooz and beenz, but lots of people will get burned along the way.

The requirements by exchanges and the regulations they're trying to avoid revolve around US residents, not US citizens.

If he is outside of the US long enough and stays in one place long enough he can establish residency outside of the US and be fine.

That would probably require an actual resident ID of another country.

https://twitter.com/satoshi/status/1063516638870478848

This is Craig Wright, pretending to be Satoshi again. Apparently, he managed to sign a message with Hal Finney's private key, somehow. (Edit: or he might've pulled up an old Hal Finney signature)

The scuttlebutt is that he signed it in a non-standard way, kind of like when he "signed" a message as Satoshi to convince Gavin that he's Satoshi.

This is the real mystery, the @satoshi twitter handle "Joined May 2018". How in the world did squatters not nab that one earlier?

And yeah, without a publicly released signed message signed with the private key from block 0, he's not Satoshi. It's that simple.

On college degrees, they are kinda necessary for engineers.  That’s not something you want to learn by experience.  College degrees allow you to learn from other people’s experience...

These days college is just motivation to learn something. You could just as quickly learn everything on your own, but most "kids" don't have enough self-motivation to do it, so college is a good choice.

Not only do you have to give up possession of your coins to exchanges to use them, now apparently you also have to surrender your anonymity.

Yes, a bank may keep copies of identifying documents that it uses to verify a customer’s

I think it's safe to assume that some banks do keep scans. It's been ages since I opened an account, but I'm pretty sure they made photocopies of my ID.

Attorneys for these defendants claimed that their skill was in valuation and deal-making, and that they lacked the training to recognize fraudulent accounting practices they claimed that they would have needed. However, in many cases the defendants' subordinates testified that the defendants ordered them to falsify the accounts.

No, 2FA is simply two ways to authenticate, usually a password and a generated code. My 2FA encryption key is stored offline, and I have a backup 2FA offline device. If my primary device dies, and can easily set up a new primary device safely knowing that nothing has been compromised. If my primary device is stolen, I can use my backup device to deactivate my online 2FA codes and setup fresh new ones.

The arbitrage with Bitcoin to fiat is very risky. First, Bitfinex is nothing like the US exchanges (which are under the supervision of SEC) and is known with their "hacks" and "bank problems". This means your money can be stolen and you can't do anything about it. Second: if you buy at Bitstamp and transfer the Bitcoins to Bitfinex, you have to wait several hours during which time the price may dip.

Yeah, to do that effectively, you need to hold balances in both places so that you can execute instantly. Definitely risky.

Satoshi knew that once he slipped that blocksize limit into the core client, it would be there forever, and become the de facto standard in all bitcoin software implementations. That's why Garzik and the others were opposed to it at the time. Satoshi said that it was temporary, but he knew enough about game theory to realize 1MB blocks would become a Schelling Point within the bitcoin network if it was left in the core client long enough.

That's simply not true. You're claiming to know the mind of Satoshi in direct opposition with his public statements.

It can be phased in, like:

if (blocknumber > 115000)

It can start being in versions way ahead, so by the time it reaches that block number and goes into effect, the older versions that don't have it are already obsolete.

When we're near the cutoff block number, I can put an alert to old versions to make sure they know they have to upgrade.

New diet no more carbs for a while, no wine etc. Seeking Ketosis.

Go for it! Bacon, eggs, cheese, steak, etc, mmmmmm. But understand it may take a few weeks until your metabolism fully adjusts, so be patient. Wine can definitely fit in a well-managed keto diet, with around 4g carbs for a good dry wine. You can save another carb or two with a very dry champagne. For me, it's sipping on some good old whiskey, 0 carbs. But be careful, alcohol hits much harder when you're in ketosis.

I could be wrong but I will keep my principle to stay away from FOMO, and keep my patience to be safe and have better chances. Months ago, no one believed that bitcoin would even drop to $6,000, but it actually dropped deeper than that range. From now on, I will keep waiting (taking profits of rest of my bitcoin, and waiting for chances to buy back).

Current bull run is more like 3 months. There's plenty of fuel left in the rockets.

Bitcoin has a lot of people who are small government and want the people to be able to control their funds. That is a conservative and right wing view. Now why would you want crypto to succeed if you're a liberal and want government control in everything? It doesn't make sense.

Small government conservatives are actually very rare in the last few decades.

Because bitcoin isn't just a protocol. It is the whole ecosystem: users, apps, miners, history, devs, merchants, exchanges, etc.

Blocks are nice and empty at the moment if anyone wants to consolidate.  Just had a 20 sat transaction clear in first block I think.

20 sat/b is way too high for next block inclusion.
Thinking about a post on how to calculate optimal fees and stuff.
Every sat count!
Keeping stacking Satoshi!

I think he meant 20 sat total fee. Mempool is being nearly cleared each block recently.

Other than the fact that Satoshi's original release had no set limit on block size. Well, there is that.

No explicit limit, but other parts of the protocol limited the blocks to 32MB.

Mostly yes. Network efficiency will degrade, but difficulty will adjust to mostly compensate.

What is more likely is that several computers or servers were used to mine the first million coins. Since there were no pools, each mined coin comes from a wallet on different computers.

Multiple computers can all use the same wallet. But the nonces on the blocks indicate that they came from a single "system" that was very fast, probably some sort of pool-like configuration.

How is that inconsistent with low difficulty on a single laptop?

Even if multiple machines, which I doubt, I don’t know how you can say with confidence that sequential nonces aren’t just crappy code shared by all machines.  To state the bleeding obvious, if all clients count their nonces starting at “1”, and then “1 + 1” etc, your blockchain will have a series of nonces counting in order.

None of this pool conspiracy theory makes any sense.

Early analysis implied that Satoshi was running many computers. I missed seeing a later update that fits more in line with a quad-core desktop miner: https://bitslog.com/2013/09/04/satoshi-machine-one-mystery-is-solved-and-another-opens/

Damn that's a bullish chart. Although the raw bitcoin supply is growing, long-term hodlers are growing faster. That means the net supply available on the market is shrinking.

The simple fact is refined carbohydrates are bad, in general, for human beings.  One does not need to be KETO to improve their life but just cut out sugar and refined carbs completely.  All things in moderation.

Keto is great for endurance. Normal people have so much energy stored as fat. Once your metabolism adapts to burning fat, endless energy!

Bootstrap post-collapse technology

Winter is coming and Collapse OS aims to soften the blow. It is a z80 kernel and a collection of programs, tools and documentation that allows you to assemble an OS that can:

Run on minimal and improvised machines.
Interface through improvised means (serial, keyboard, display).
    Edit text files.
Compile assembler source files for a wide range of MCUs and CPUs.
Read and write from a wide range of storage devices.
    Replicate itself.

Pointless. There's no way all computers are going to be destroyed, but millions of z80 cpus will be fine and salvageable. That's just a crazy scenario. Now, designing a new post-apocalypse cpu that could be created from low-tech sources and an os to go with it, that's a good idea.
