Do you realize that those variables ( bid sum/ask sum & price; bid sum & ask sum) are displayed in those charts taking into account their own relative highest and lowest points in a given timeframe, and thus them intersecting on the chart is just arbitrary and meaningless, right?

In the "Bid sum/Ask skum & Price" chart, both graphs are in USD/BTC and both graphs use the same scale. That's not arbitrary and meaningless.

Sure, I typed too fast and I incorrectly included the Bid sum/Ask sum & price chart. But the fact that the bid sum and ask sum crosses on a chart is 100% arbitrary and meaningless, do you agree?

According to Moody, there are bids totaling more than $50 million in the $0 - $2.50 range.

It isn't difficult to manipulate the total bid sum. All you need to do is place lots of bids far below where you expect sales.

Many seem to hide their heads in the ground, but the hard fact is that 10s of millions of $ have been invested in machines which only use is to mine BTC, and those 10s of millions of $ in mining rigs are a cost that miners are willing to recoup ASAP.

If the invested funds was taken from BTC savings they want BTC back, not FIAT.

Because USD deposits and Withdrawals have not been allowed on mt.gox due to "banking problems" for like 2 months.

Interesting, at exactly the same time that 1262 btc buy was initiated on the USD market, an 883 btc buy was triggered on the euro market. Maybe someone had a bot configured the moment someone buys hard on the USD market?

It's the same market.

31. Post 3071802 (copy this link) (by Kupsi) (scraped on 2020-04-04_Sat_11.15h):

It works like this.

In my example 1 EURO = 1.50 USD and Mt.Gox adds a 2.5% exchange fee between currenies.

I place a ask order @ 12.00 USD. This order will also show up at 8.2 EURO. (12 / 1.5 * 1.025)
I place a bid order @ 11.50 USD. This order will also show up at 7.475 EURO. (11.5 / 1.5 * 0.975)

When most orders are placed in USD, it will give a bigger spread at the EURO market because of the 2.5% exchange fee.

If I then place a ask order @ 8.40 EURO, it will show up at 12.915 USD. (8.40 * 1.5 * 1.025)

It's the same orders and the same actors on all Gox markets.

Edit: Please explain how on the jump from 130-140+ I was able to buy in fully with my gbp holdings @ 85£ (131$) while the USD market was already at 136$ for a few mins?

With todays exchange rate a sell order at 85£ would show up at 132.0985 * 1,025 = 135.4009625 in the USD market.

Gox could have used an exchange rate so the order showed up above 136 USD.

So, since I bought in at $143.39 - should I sell out again, and wait for the crash?

I'm saying it has potential to rocket up because of steep ask depth. But lots of others will try to call the top, bid depth won't be there...

The crash isn't coming because it's under 40k BTC for sale. That's when the fun start. The crash will come when the price has gone too high too fast. We're not there yet.

Seems to me like the amount of value being traded has, when you take into account prices, increased. I mean 50k coins at $10 each is less then 5k at $130.
Which is already reflected in the higher price. IMO BTC volume is the appropriate indicator.
This.

Poor Gox.  Smiley

The total BTC volume on the exchanges will become lower and lower if Bitcoin succeeds. Less BTC traded for FIAT = Good for Bitcoin.

I think there are 3 types of bitcoiners at the moment.

1) The pre-$135/btc long term holder, who knows that right now btc's true value is not ~$200 and they will not buy at that price, when a discount may be around the corner, and feel btc's true value is around $100-$150.

2) day traders, don't care what the price is but the market volatility just now is not inviting to participate in.

3) October 2013 new blood from recent spike, to these folk anything under $230 is a good price as they have seen it's potential. They are probably the ones fueling this dance around the $200 mark.

A lot of excitement about the price rise recently but it appears to have no determination to continue. i think we are looking at $140 - $170 without a panic, in the following weeks. With panic who knows....The Chinese love their money, if it starts disappearing in front of their eyes....

4) True believers which think everything below $10,000 is too cheap to sell.

It dips with every difficulty increase, my estimate is this increase saw the last of the laggard GPU and early Asic,s drop out.

Hash rate is not going down if anything it may level out for a week or two.

It's only bad luck.

That was pre-bubble time. Guess we are in a deflating period,i think a dip in 200-300 range is not a bear's dream..however that would take some long period of continuing decline.

The last two years, BitStamp have never fallen below 3 months low. I don't think that will happen in the next two years either. 2014 will be a great year for Bitcoin.

Which of those two look more like  "Volume is slowly picking up again a month after the bottom" to you?

Possibly the 'reversal' is more stretched out this time, because the entire correction was more stretched out, so I'm not taking the above as proof that we must go down again. I'm just pointing out that, so far, they look pretty dissimilar to me.

You need to look at Gox which was the biggest exchange in 2013.

^^^ notice the difference between the two charts: In 2013 there was a spike down from 100 to 80 after the bottom but it immediately rebounded back up and spent all of the consolidation time near the high of 100 rather than near 80. In 2014 there is a spike down from 540 to 420 but there was no rebound and it is spending all of its consolidation time near 420 and nowhere close to 540.

In 2014 the spike down was from 440 to 340. It rebounded and the consolidation is here now.

No, I don't. By July / August, gox was in hot water already, and it reflected in volume. More specifically, April 2013 was gox volume in full glory, by the middle of the year they had already taken a hit. I guess to do this the right way, we'd have to sum over gox, stamp, btce and btcchina, but I can't bring myself to do it for such little gain.

I agree. But Gox was still bigger than Stamp, BTC-e and BTC China combined, so Gox is most important.

I am referring to the first spike down that occured AFTER the reversal

2013:  66 ->105 -> THE SPIKE=80  ->100 ->100->100->100->100   consolidating at high of spike
2014:  340->540-> THE SPIKE=420 ->440->440->440->440->440   consolidating at low of spike

OK. I understand you. But the spike to 80 didn't rebound to 100 immediately.

Objectively, what are our chances of going lower?  I can throw in some fiat and buy some coins, but this is probably the last time I will be buying for 6 months or a year.  Ignoring the trolls, is there a legitimate chance of hitting $500?

DO NOT take any advice from anybody here! Don't ever ask other people here what to do with your money! I know you see all these lines and charts and mainly bears who act like they know it all but i can guarantee you that not a single person here knows where Bitcoin will go. Every bear here will tell you we 100% sure will see 500 again. That's because they're sad little creatures who do nothing but lie and manipulate because they want the price to go down.
The bulls obviously want the price to go up but will be a bit more modest and say we likely won't see 500 again. Either way any info you'll get is coloured and worthless.
The fact that you want to invest in Bitcoin means you believe it will be worth more in the future. If you do then you should buy. 500 or 560 is meaningless in the long run if this thing takes off. If you don't think it will take off then don't. Waiting is kinda pointless because again nobody knows what it will do.

Yes, don't listen to that advice...

1. can anyone confirm that the US Marshalls won't sell a batch of 29k BTC to a single bidder, but smaller batches to multiple bidders? I can't really tell from the auction listing.

There are 10 batches.

Quote
This auction is for 9 blocks of 3,000 bitcoins (“Series A Blocks”) and 1 block of 2,656.51306529 bitcoins (“Series B Block”).
Series   Bitcoins per Block      Blocks Available    Total Bitcoins Available in Series
A           3,000.00000000      9                           27,000.00000000
B           2,656.51306529      1                            2,656.51306529

Total  29,656.51306529

You must use the Bid Form that will be provided to eligible registered bidders only. Your bid must reflect the number of Series A Blocks (up to a maximum of 9 blocks) and Series B Blocks (up to a maximum of 1 block) that you wish to purchase. A bid on more than one block from the Series A Blocks means that the bidder will accept any number of blocks up to the number of blocks for which he/she/it bid (e.g. a bid to purchase 5 blocks of Series A means that bidder will accept 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 Series A Blocks at the per block offer price).

The prevailing bids will be determined by the following criteria:
1. The eligible bidder who offers the highest price will be the prevailing bidder;
2. If there are multiple bids at the highest price, the first bid received will prevail; and
3. If fewer than all of the Series A blocks are sold to the highest bidder, the remaining blocks will be sold to the successive highest bidders until all blocks are sold.

I believe these two charts are healthy. No worries here. Aiming at new all time high in September or October.

Bitcoin days destroyed 28 days average is low:

Number of transactions are going up again after the summer holiday:

This has to be the weakest bull trap I've ever seen. It will break soon followed by several more weeks of sideways down trending. TERA tried to tell you all this but you drove her away for having a "contrarian" opinion.

You're so right, man!  My bitcoin that was worth $588 yesterday is only worth $570 today!!!  What a devastating crash, a btc crash to end all crashes!!

(In. case. you. can't. tell. that. was. mega. sarcasm.)

And it was worth $600 a couple weeks ago and worth $630 a week before that and $680 only a couple months ago. You're welcome to keep holding if you'd like, but smart people are reducing their exposure right now.

...and $450 three months ago. Forgotten that?  Grin

Well, I think that represents where we're going again over the next few weeks. You need to remember that in May everyone was calling for the next huge rally in late July. There were graphs and TA everywhere calling it, and much of it looked quite convincing. All it took was a small spark to ignite that frenzy up to $680, but when nothing materialized, investors lost hope again.

What do we have to look forward to now? There are some half heartedly calling for a bubble in October or November, but I don't think they even really believe it. We're all just blindly hoping now, so I think a return to the April/May price levels (or lower) is just about inevitable now.

I believe you are wrong. Time will tell.

PS: People are hoarding coins. https://blockchain.info/charts/bitcoin-days-destroyed?showDataPoints=false&timespan=2year&show_header=true&daysAverageString=28&scale=0&address=

PS2: Use of bitcoin is going up again. https://blockchain.info/charts/n-transactions-excluding-popular?timespan=1year&showDataPoints=false&daysAverageString=7&show_header=true&scale=0&address=

I'm not surprised that transactions have risen in the past few days, but can't that just be attributed to holders getting spooked and sending their coins around to sell? If so, then yes, transactions are rising, but it's far from a good indication for future price forecasting, imho.

More transactions could be people wanting to sell. But Bitcoin days destroyed is low. That doesn't indicate people wanting to sell.

Oh, we're well on our way back to the $400s I'm afraid. Some people here seem to think I take pleasure in watching the price drop. I don't. I believe in bitcoin and that was the reason I invested in it originally... but obviously we've derailed at some point and mainstream adoption is looking less and less likely. Look at the devastation to the alt coin market over the past few days. This is what is happening to bitcoin, just on fast forward.

You know... the bigger they are, the harder they fall?

Altcoins don't have a future. Bitcoin has.

Right now bitcoin hashrate 178,578,749 GH/s . I saw 200 few days ago and Estimated Next Difficulty was %21, now %17. Someone please explain why it is unstable and actually hashrate down? Some miners turn off their ASIC?

It's just how it works. We don't know what the current hashrate is. If the miners get lucky and find many blocks over time, the hashrate will show too high. If the miners are unlucky and find fewer blocks over time, the hashrate will show too low.

Just for curiosity, if some day you use bitcoin to buy a car, how will you make sure that the address that you are sending the bitcoins to is indeed the car dealer's?  What will you do if the car dealer tells you that they did not receive any bitcoins, and that their payment address is not the one you used?

You get a copy of the sales contract with the address and the QR-code before you transfer the coins.

How many coins do the Winklis actually own? 200-500k?

200k(500k) * 500$ = 100 000 000  (250 000 000$) capacity.
200k(500k) * 1000$ = 200 000 000  (500 000 000$) capacity.

Not that much $ for an ETF IMHO.

They have a little over 100k. When the ETF goes live they will need to buy coins at the open market to satisfy the demand of wall street Smiley

I thought they allowed up to 2.5x leverage, but I'm not seeing anywhere to adjust leverage settings.

so..

what happend ?
short squezzed Huh

afaik, you set your leverage rate when you register

I do recall setting my leverage settings when I registered. Odd that they don't allow you to adjust it later.

I suppose I will just have to make a new account if I want to change my leverage settings then  Undecided

They have one leverage setting for all users now.

Quote
In our ongoing effort to deliver the very best in crytocurrency trading, Bitfinex is pleased to announce several changes and enhancements to our margin system that will pave the way for better risk management, product-based margin requirements, and future trading products. We have also decided to streamline some of the associated margin features, updating and harmonizing margin terminology

1. We have decided to eliminate the “Choose your leverage” feature, i.e., 1:1, 2:1 & 2.5:1. Instead of this, we are implementing a “per-pair” leverage allowance. This will allow us to tailor the exposure based on the assets volatility. Virtually all users maximize this value, and since it is self-selected anyway, we have chosen to simplify our product by eliminating it.

2. We are also changing the way that we calculate “Tradeable Balance”. Currently, we do not consider the nature of a traders collateral when trading swaps, but that has lead to a loophole that allows a trader to effectively achieve 3.5:1 leverage by using BTC as collateral for a long BTC swap (most common example). While we are not particularly concerned about the effective leverage per se (see #3 below), we do, nonetheless want to harmonize risk management by considering any other collateral besides the one indicated by the pair (USD in the case of BTCUSD) as part of the allowing leverage for that position.

3. While we understand that #2 may impact some traders used to the “extra” leverage, we are counteracting its effects by increasing initial allowable leverage to 3.33:1. We are making this change in the context of making the following changes the margin terminology and parameters.
          1. We will be changing any mention of “Leverage” to “Initial Margin” and representing it as a percentage instead of a ratio, which means that leverage of 2.5:1 would be represented as 40%. The new leverage of 3.33:1 will be shown as an Initial Margin of 30%.
          2. Maintenance Margin will be increased slightly to 15% and will be fixed to be always be half of the Initial Margin for any giving swaps product.
          3. These changes will allow us to easily adjust the margin parameters for a given swap pair to reflect marketplace realities as well as give us the ability to introduce future products that, for example, may be substantially less volatile, requiring less margin to trade. For the time being, 30%/15% margin parameters will be the same for all swap products.

The net effect of trader behavior and existing positions will be negligible and we look forward to delivering on the possibilities and new opportunities created by these changes. These changes will go into effect on Monday, August 18, 2014 at 00:00 UTC.

One bid could take them all...

Quote
Bidders must register to participate in a designated Series. Bidders may register to participate in more than one Series, but must provide the required deposit for each Series (i.e. the deposit requirement aggregates depending on the number of Series selected).

As with the last auction, one registration allows you to bid on multiple blocks for the same price, but does not allow you submit multiple bids at varying prices. If you wish to have the ability to bid multiple prices on multiple blocks within the same Series, you will need to submit another registration form and additional deposit. The following examples are provided for your convenience:

Example 1: A bid to purchase three (3) blocks of Series A for the same per bitcoin price (e.g. $X per bitcoin for 6,000 Series A bitcoins) requires ONE registration form for Series A with a $100,000 deposit. Use ONE Bid Form to bid for ALL THREE Series A blocks.

Example 2: A bid to purchase three (3) blocks of Series A for the same per bitcoin price (e.g. $X per bitcoin for 6,000 Series A bitcoins), and two (2) blocks of Series B for the same per bitcoin price (e.g. $Y per bitcoin for 6,000 Series B bitcoins) requires ONE registration form for BOTH Series A and B with a $250,000 deposit ($100,000 for Series A plus $150,000 for Series B). Use ONE Bid Form to bid for Series A AND Series B blocks. Note that the per-bitcoin price for Series A does not need to match the Series B per-bitcoin price.

Example 3: Three (3) separate bids to purchase blocks of Series A at different prices (e.g. $X per bitcoin for 2,000 bitcoins, $Y per bitcoin for 2,000 bitcoins, and $Z per bitcoin for 2,000 bitcoins) requires THREE separate registration forms (EACH selecting Series A), and a $300,000 deposit ($100,000 for EACH registration). Use THREE Bid Forms, ONE FOR EACH Series A block. Note that each registration also permits a bidder to register for other Series (requiring additional deposits).

Why buy now? Wait 1 - 2 months and buy then at much lower prices and with little slippage due to huge volume.

Well, that's the point. They are as locked in as anybody... and they aren't even willing to throw out a spitball, low bid on this.

They bought at $10. If they wanted more, they would have bought more then.

But they said $100,000... so below $400 is certainly a bargain... and likely below $350 and even a $250 to $300 bid is within the range of possibilities. Are they just bad at math and opposed to 300x profits?

Why don't you short more if you know the price will go down? Are you bad at math?

I switched long short-term (with a narrow stop, though, as this could get pretty going up or ugly going down). Anyhow, if the Winklevii were to buy all of the bitcoins right now that would be beneficial to my position.

Anyhow, I posted it because I legitimately wonder. Also, so many people are posting that this guy or that guy seems very confident... well, there are some high profile Bitcoiners who are not so confident. So, mixed signal at best.

If they weren't confident, they should sell. They already have had a 37x increase. Diversification is wise, but they keep holding Smiley

The first legitimate bubble took the price quickly from $1 to $2 to $32, and then in short order back to $2. It took another 3 years for the price to recover to around $20 in value, as public awareness of the existence of bitcoin slowly grew, and new money flowed in.

It took 1 year and 9 months. After three years, the price was ~$600.

Pretty sure we have one more auction left for ~44k BTC.

Is there any way to know which prices are they managing? Without them saying it of course

Is there some track on those btc?

I presume these wallets are splitted and sold as-is. That means we cannot know what their address(es) is/are if not a seller reveals it/them for us.

This is the 50k sold now: https://blockchain.info/address/12pCPrWvudnefJCtXQUBcm9z2NogtC3Rix

Did they split them first to another address last time or can we assume a single winning bidder?

EDIT: thinking about it, would be surprised if the winning bidder wasn't using a multisig address

They moved them several times before they paid the winners after the last auction.

Long term downtrend breakout on Kraken BTC/EUR 1m.  Smiley

Had to look this up. It's true. QE in the Eurozone might be a driver for rising bitcoin prices.
Small exchanges do random things all the time. There is no significance if they break an uptrend or downtrend before any of the real exchanges. Not to say they all wont. But who cares about Kraken?

It's not a random thing. The price is lower than on Bitstamp.

Certainly looks that way. Lots of nice bids piling up on BFX. Shorts closing though, so anything too spectacular is bound to collapse back down, at least temporarily.

It still doesn't matter what an exchange that small does. It wouldn't matter if someone dumped down to $10 on Kraken. They mean nothing.

It's the USD/Euro exchange rate that makes this happen now. Not that Kraken is a small exchange.

I'm saying it's happening on Kraken because of the weak euro. I don't think it says much about bitcoin. (But higher bitcoin prices in USD on the other exchanges is positive for bitcoin.)

Again, my original point was that the future value of bitcoin is being predicated to a large extent on the 21m cap, a belief based on faith more than reality.

I think it's predicated mostly on the belief that the majority of people (miners in this case) will act rationally.  I would say that most miners consider the 21M coin cap to be a defining characteristic of Bitcoin, and probably the most important characteristic that gives the coin value.  If you accept that premise, then it is logical to assume that miners will not act irrationally by destroying the value that is their whole incentive for mining in the first place.

Good point, well made.

But raising the cap would be  an indirect consequence of adjusting the halving frequency, so by increasing the cap, you would be extending the [higher] reward period for miners

Since we havent reached the point where tx fees outweigh coin reward, do you think that might become an incentive for miners to increase the cap? (bear in mind that it would be a slow process, with no immediate dump of coins on the market.)

The miners can try to increase the cap all they want. The regular users will not use their new-cap-software.

Highest bid on BIT is now 400 USD for a coin. And nobody is selling yet...

This does sound like good news, but there's a problem...

As the Twitter message mentions, people that have held their 'shares' for 12 months or more can now sell.
I cannot find how many BTC Grayscale holds, but it can never be a lot.

This makes for a problem, as the volume can never be higher than the amount of shares/BTC that has been held for more than 12 months.

This volume is probably not even 1% of the daily traded volume on current exchanges, which means at the moment this is still useless to institutional investors.

But would the next buyer have to hold as long?

No, but if you buy new shares directly from the BIT you need to hold for 12 months before selling on the OTC market.

I don't think so. Part of the condition of approving the fund was freezing those shares for 12 months. I'll bet a fair few paid a whole lot more than the current price so there's no particular reason to sell.

Bingo.  I'm guessing most bought in between $700 - $500.  Even buyers at $400 will want a significant profit.

But if you are a long time holder, you should sell at a premium on the OTC market and buy new shares directly from the BIT.

My reading still is that SecondMarket and other "Authorized Participants" have to buy bitcoins themselves in order to get shares from Greyscale.  Isn t that so?

Only BIT buys and sells bitcoin. GBTC can only create shares when owners of BIT redeem their shares of BIT. You can't deposit bitcoin with GBTC.

Is it true the first shareholders cannot sell their shares for twelve months and after that the shares can be freely traded?

What percentage of shares (representing bitcoins) can be sold now?

As I understand it, only shares of BIT that have been owned for 12 months can be transferred/deposited/redeemed/converted to shares of GBTC. Once they are GBTC, they can be freely traded on the open market without restriction.

Is there any estimate of how many that can be freely traded on the open market without restriction today? It's going to be a damp squib if hardly any can be traded until another year elapses.

~92,300 coins were in the BIT a year ago.

Like someone has insider info about institutional demand of GBTC and bought up all the cheap coins for themselves.

Isn't it a walled garden though? Virtually nothing can get in and out. It'll be fun to look at but won't have much relevance for any other market.

Accredited investors can buy new shares in the fund. New shares must be backed by real coins.

I have a question about GBTC: If you buy a share, can you convert it to real bitcoin? (Maybe it sounds stupid, but I think it's important and not obvious because of this trend with "advanced trading assets" and other shit talk)

EDIT: And I support "The List" 100%!

That's what I believe too. That if you actually buy a share you actually buy the equivalent BTC amount. I don't have an account there, but I believe there should be an option to get your BTCs out if you'd like...

1 share doesn't continually represent .1 BTC, as there are fees. You can redeem in baskets of 100 shares (though I saw in one place that the "Authorized Participant" is not accepted redemption requests right now).

Do we know what these fee's are?

Don't cry, fellow bulls. Just 8 days to Nasdaq Sweden start trading bitcoin-paper (backed by real BTC).
This time, with unlimited volume on both bids and asks. (The GBTC has less than 150.000 bitcoins in matured shares.)

I don't think its backed by real BTC. When you buy oil shares, you don't back up your shares with buying more actual oil.

Yes it is. From Coindesk: "XTB Provider AB will hedge all sales of the bitcoin traded note by buying an equal value in the bitcoin market."

If Bitcoin Tracker One trade above the real bitcoin price, XBT Provider AB (Swedish company) will buy bitcoins and sell new notes on the exchange.

Doesn't the whole concept of an ETN depend the issuers credit rating and credibility? If I was looking to invest I wouldn't be hugely impressed by KNCminer as a company. There's no shortage of beefs from their customers.

The notes are issued by XBT Provider AB, a new company. It shouldn't be hard to prove that they are not running with fractional reserve.

is there a story behind this? Eligius is for the block limit increase and isn't including TX's to press the issue?

This happens often when a new block is found right after the last one. The pools push an empty block header to the miners to work on before they fill the block with transactions and send the updated header to the miners.
