Let's stabilize in the 140s a couple of hours and then we will attack the great wall Wink

Nope. I have done that way too many times. I have sworn to myself to never ever sell at a loss ever again. I still have fiat in my account so it's not that bad. Smiley

I hear you. But the problem with that approach is that you just got into an arranged marriage with your position. It's hard to see the market objectively from there

Can't tell if this is a sarcastic comment, considering the thread and subforum.

We're again at 100.0 as I type this. Humans and their love for certain numbers... skewing prices since they learned to count with fingers.

It doesn't mean anyone has a right to tell another person what to do with their money. That is manipulation, not speculation. The guy didn't say "tell me what to do."
I'm speculating but neither buying or selling. Must blow your mind to find out people do this.

So suggesting that he get out of his position because he's blinded by his "marriage" isn't telling him what to do? It's clear from the context.

Greed is some bad bastard, it could break our heads at some time  Undecided

The problem is that since there is a fixed amount of BTC, it incentivizes people to hoard it.  Which then causes them to panic dump it when the price falls.  What we need is a cryptocurrency with enough inflation to deincentive saving (hording).

Go buy Freicoin then.  I won't be joining you since I don't like to buy depriciating assets...

The IPO  IS them cashing out. Yes they can use their own cash to manipulate the price prior to the IPO, but that would mean buying more coins, the very things they are trying to get rid of. A dangerous game, especially in what is looking more and more like a bear market. And very telling that they applied at time when the price was at the psychologically significant $100 mark. Smells of FEAR to me. Perhaps they are the reason for the gap between us and other exchanges right now as they try to prop up the price

Pretty sure it's Newt Gingrich with all that green from his moon mining operation.

I think it's for effect.

If you have 1k in coins, you really need fiat bad enough that you will dump them on Bitstamp at up to $10 lower than you can get them elsewhere? Doesn't ring true to me.

Could be.
But my premise is not about 'needing fiat bad enough' it is about the value of a Gox IOU vs $'s at Bitstamp. The Gox $ IOU's appear to be becoming worth less (notice the space for the moment)

The major buys on Gox do not line up with the major sells on Stamp. Your theory holds no water.

I cannot trust a rally in a market where people can't get the USD out.

Except for April, never has the price been more fake and artificial than right now.

That seems so simple and evident to me.

Why is the sentiment so bullish? Did I miss some big piece of news?

Minus the delay withdrawals everything else is looking solid.

I'm thinking a slight bull run gets Gox out of the bind, which is what I bet on.

I cannot trust a rally in a market where people can't get the USD out.

Except for April, never has the price been more fake and artificial than right now.

That seems so simple and evident to me.

Why is the sentiment so bullish? Did I miss some big piece of news?

I hope some big news is happening soon, and maybe the buyer whale/s already know/s it

one thing that many people are not aware of or do not want to accept is that technical analysis =chart patterns = price is a leading indicator

This means that the news will follow prices, apart from very short term news spikes.

We anticipated well the rally we are seeing now because an important trend line has been broken to the upside .

Finally the price is high enough that I can get the word out about my trillion dollar Bitcoin casino!

Sorry for an on-topic posting  Grin, but anyone track the 3000 GoxUSD bid wall that's on $100?  When was it put up, has it been touched, etc?

Also, anyone care to speculate on the CampBX/bitstamp inversion?  That is, normally CBX is closer to gox, but now bitstamp is closer.

Easiest way to tell is to go to Bitcoinity and put it on the 3 day or 24h timescale. See if the line nudges up to $100 for some period of time.

The answer to your question though, is no. It was put up July 29th ~8:00 AM IIRC.

I've been short term bullish for days, I'm seeing a large bull trap playing out. Polarizing people here don't seem to comprehend that there can be different time frames and different levels of certainty.

That's why I asked.

I'd be more inclined to think it was a bull trap if the Gox queue wasn't so crazy. People withdrawing fiat are stuck between the proverbial rock and a hard place.

I think it goes up to at least $115 just because Gox is giving it nowhere else to go. Gox trap? Gox trap.

so sorry if i missed a point there.

are we really going only up because people can't get their fiat out of gox,
or is there a connection with the inside bitcoin conference today in New York?
Are there any other bullish news?

It is at least partially to blame. Everyone is trying to make sense of what is going on. There is just so much going on it's hard to make sense of, lol.

In my mind the ETF news is huge, even if it fails it sets precedent for another attempt in another country.

Bitstamp hasn't stopped following MtGox's lead (with a spread), so it's safe to say that people are viewing MtGox's price as "real". As someone speculating on MtGox, say MtGox suddenly opened their valves and the withdrawal backlog is cleared within a week, I think there's a good chance for the bull trap to still play out. Maybe stunted. And if MtGox doesn't fix it, the spread will just stay even or increase.

Maybe if they bull trap hard enough Gox will let them in the rumored 5+ digit priority queue  Cheesy.

edit: At 6 digits I hear Mark throws in a free exercise ball.

Sell only when you need the cash. Or, use BTC for payment for goods & services.

Can't tax purchasing of BTC, only the revenue when transferred back to USD

A gain is a gain no matter what. If you make a gain on BTC and then buy a computer with said BTC, you still pay capital gains.

It's worse than that. Long term capital gains have a preferred tax treatment over regular income or barter transactions. So, you're best off liquidating BTC on an exchange and then using fiat to buy goods.  Undecided

We just had a healthy profit taking phase in which price consolidated before this next leg in the parabolic rise. It was so clear it was blinding. Big money wants in this time.

Infrastructure will be tested hard again, and didn't improve shit in the last couple of years. Stres test on its way, real world moves slowly.

Anyhow: shall we agree that its about time for the bears to buy back at a loss - shall we?

But this jet is running out of fuel, the markets propped up by major speculation at the moment, serious algo-bot trading and pumping up, it's going over the cliff with nothing left under it's feet, and when people realize their buying into the top dollar bag holding club, there will be a change in direction. (in my humble opinion).

I always feel like the relevant information from that graph comes from it being integrated. It gives a whole new meaning to it.

That being said, I think we are overbought and $600 sounds right.

I agree with this and I believe it's overpriced currently by about $400.

Yes. I realize it's contradictory to the rest of what I wrote.

I should say emotionally I feel it's overpriced, logically it appears to be underpriced, at this moment anyway. It's hard to fathom the ramp to $1000 holding like it is, when that ramp happened so quickly. I haven't quite adjusted to the new valuation.

Thank you. Yeah, I hear ya-- I think many of us have the log trendline in the back of our minds and imagine a retracement that might occur too quickly. Instead, media after media report continues to roll forward, including the amazing first analyst coverage on the street (which, of course, by its nature, the analyst coverage green lights big money to get aboard), and we continue skyward, often making daily returns that most people would kill for on an annual basis. It's not easy to parse it all out.

It's wild man. Living the dream, aren't we?  Cool

Sheer nonsense.
If you hold your Bitcoins you cannot gain any - at least with the current increase from the coins you have. Because you always end up with the same amount that you bought. That is common sense.

This has been the most difficult of all the crashes to watch without moving significant sums of bitcoin to the exchanges (because opportunity seemed so obvious), but I remain resolved that the risk of allowing 3rd parties control over my bitcoins is too great.  The best I was able to do was have some fiat on a couple of exchanges with buy orders staggered all the way down to $250, many of which, as you can imagine, were hit, and the bitcoin have subsequently been removed from the exchanges.

I'm with you on this. Here, take more money then I've ever had in my life and please don't make it disappear ok?ok?ok?ok?ok?ok?ok?

They were ahead by 10% for almost the entire rally. I don't think it means anything either way.

What I do think means something is the huge walls near $650. Gonna be tough to break through those, assuming they don't retreat.

They have way higher volume and are still 10% higher, that means nothing to you? It means a lot to me. They are anchoring the market.

Look for support between 822 down to 764.  If we break down below that then it's pretty bearish in my book.  If we stabilize there and the start backup then the 970 area would be an area of resistance.  Judging by the recent BTC action, a bounce should be eminent.

What exchange?

Based on Gox Numbers, but all exchanges should have the same relative price action.

Don't look to Gox man, I'm warning every bear here. This shit is gonna blow up in your face.

I'm normally bullish as hell but if the China news is real I'm mega bearish for a bit. They pretty much carried the whole market. Still holding because Bitcoin is sexy and fuck taxes.

I really start feeling stupid for not selling a single coin since I bought some in late summer... It seems that all bulls sold at least some of their coins during the runup?
But on the other side, I do not have many coins and I believe a much greater value will be achieved during the next years, so I don't want to "lose" some due to bad trading (even I'd profit $-wise).
It just feels strange to lose more dollars than I ever owned...

I thought the same on April this year. Calm down, everybody.

Yep. What's worse is when you do sell and then 7 months later you are out $45,000.

Well ladies and gents, this flushing is going to tell us A LOT about the state of bitcoin and where the money has come and is coming from.

We won't be able to see the full picture for months or at least weeks, but when we can see it, we will know much better about what kind of investors made up the rally in the East, which ones are long term and where future money can and can't come from there - AND maybe more importantly, we will know how much of the rally really came from the East and how much really came from the West.

And I suspect we will never have to worry about China "leading" the markets again. Which is A - O - K  with me.

I was with you up until the last sentence, Honey Badger, why the antipathy towards China?

I was never quite confident that China had any real long term future with bitcoin. And I would rather, in an ideal world, have bitcoin be driven by people in countries that have more freedoms, because from a PR standpoint it makes bitcoin appear more solid as well.
For BTC price to rise, you need capital. You know where the capital is.

+1

As the asset you are trading increases in value, the same amount of value can be exchanged with smaller amounts.

Look at a stock like Google (GOOG). At it's highest exchange rate (now), the volume (measured in shares) is far less than it was when the exchange rate was much lower. (Yes, I know Bitcoin isn't a stock.)

http://finance.yahoo.com/q/bc?s=GOOG&t=my&l=on&z=l&q=l&c=

I guess then the volume charts should display price*volume to give a normalised figure?

They do just on that on bitcoincharts.com

Just click "volume by currency."

Maybe this has been raised in the last few pages - I confess I haven't got time to look back - but is it not possible someone knew someone, who knew what was about to happen?

To accurately say 'it will go down to 500' is pretty good.

Was it a timed assault of a wave of selling and the timing was lucky - or was it timed FOR the news once it was obvious it was coming (if you had the right information).

Questions, questions.....

It was luck. The China news developed over time and I highly, highly doubt we would have even touched the $500's if it hadn't developed this way.

Today I sold two 2011 singles with error, a 10BTC all silver, 3 Silver gold B singles, a 2011 series two single, a silver 0.5, I am waiting on payment for two silver singles, and have had inquiries for 9 2013 singles. This has all come via the forum and personal emails.

So then there will be no arbing? If you can't buy the coins to arb with, then it stands to reason that there will be no arbing. They might do a 1 off arb like someone else said, but then they would no longer have coins left.

Arbing is only attractive in times like this. When the market gets completely squeezed, the miner (supply) will sell at foreign exchanges and because this carries more risk (no local demands) there is more selling pressure for Chinese miners. God knows how long they can continue selling oversea.... when the government starts to look at taxation.

lmfao, yeah ok dude.

3600 coins created everyday. That's all. Not everyone is selling immediately, either. You are also assuming that no one is in touch with the larger miners in China. It's still perfectly legal to buy Bitcoin there.

And at least 9/10 of these buy walls are not real investors but bots and traders playing the game 'follow the market leader and make profits' - it is all completely liquid and changes when btcchina moves - there will always be enough dumpers for every wall.

China's not leading, it's empty. Its looks more like bots correcting to match other exchanges than any trading going on.
I've been watching all of the order books and charts for days and every movement of btcchina is immediately followed by the same movement in other exchanges.

TERA is right. When BtcChina moves, the other exchanges move with it. When it stays still, the other exchange keep going in the direction of momentum.

I bought back 100% BTC. But this feels like a complete house of cards to me. Unless this can sustain until new fiat can come into the market. That is the only thing that can save the bitcoin price at this time.

There is now over 10 million in margin trading on Bitfinex, with the average loan rate of over 200%!  How long can these traders afford to pay that premium on their money?  It looks absolutely insane right now.

Wow, thanks for the information. Interesting weekend ahead, that's for sure.

The BitCoin price is stabilizing isn't it?

Dec 12-16 also looked like it was 'stabilizing'.
From the end of November it looks like: Stabilize to 1100 - Dump. Stabilize to 900 - Dump.

Now it's stabilizing at around 600, I wonder what's gonna happen next?

Dump. Then stabilize at $300. Dump. Then stabilize at $1. Dump. Then stabilize at -$60. Dump. Then stabilize at $blackhole.

Picture the folks in Cyprus, who are suffering a %100 haircut of their deposits above 100K.... a potential 50% loss due to Bitcoin volatility doesn't look too bad to anyone facing a bank "bail-in".

I think buying Bitcoin is actually a flight to safety.

Cyprus was a while ago too. If they would have gotten in they would already be up a ridiculous amount.

Others explained to me how the negative commission for market makers worked seems all around interesting. I mean it is not impossible he's just putting on a front. All the while knowing its closing down...but I doubt it will and huobi is the volume holder so it really depends on how they get cracked down upon if a crack down appears.

Will china keep us busy the whole of January? Would've thought China wasnt that importing anymore, but i guess i was wrong.

IMO unless you believe  huobi is faking the volume ( least tinfoil is bots self trading @ 0%) , then it is insane to not take caution noticing they have a 54% of the btc volume. then its btc-e 12.11%, stamp 11.79%, btcchina 7.99%, gox 7.60%.

So yeah it ain't over till the PBOC sing.

Also if its fake volume..then when proven true it would reveal there are less coins in the market then some think.. which would likely cause a price rise.

Is there any real proof of this "fake" volume?  I just don't buy it.

It is totally fake. It's a bunch of bots and traders fucking each other hard and fast at 0% fees. Anyone who claims otherwise probably has trouble opening cans of soup.

Having just read that it is possible to short Bitcoin on Bitfinex, I headed right over there to register and open an account. I then set about finding the option to short bitcoin. The Bitfinex site does not make this a very straightforward process, but I soon discovered the shorting option only to find that there is absolutely nobody interested in lending out Bitcoins to a short seller at this point in time.

Now what does that tell you?

(a big fkn queue of wannabe short-sellers and a distinct lack of mugs Bitcoin holders willing to loan out their Bitcoins to shorters chasing clear and obvious profits)

It's going to be interesting to find out if overstock are able to hedge against the volatility.
If they are able to, then maybe there's hope for a larger adoption of bitcoin.
If not, and they end up with a significant loss, instead of the small gains they expected, the signal will be bearish.

This is exactly the sentiment that causes these panics. Everyone thinks there is some insider information and the more people that participate, the strong the feeling becomes. But in reality there is no information. More likely what happened is MtGox's 1D MACD crossed and all the heavy duty bots started buying, and then this massive movement caused all of the other markets to panic. I was watching - Huobi was following mtgox.

How many have swollen balances and barely taken out any profits even though their balances grew 10, 100, 1000 fold?

my guess is very few, I cashed in some profits at all kinds of prices, and its no secret i'm very bullish, but i'm poor.... so that might have somthing to do with it.

Well, 8.5k coins were sold in the same minute. That was either:

a) one single trader going full retard
b) one huge account got hacked
c) multiple accounts were hacked and were liquidated simultaneously

The fact remains that some bastards got HUNDREDS of coins at $102. I guess the risk of having fiat on BTC-E paid off big time.

EDIT: THOUSANDS of coins in the $100-$200 range

The seller/s lost MILLIONS to those who had the low bids.

If it was a forced liquidation it could still all happen within the same minute. Computers are pretty fast. I think that's what happened.

This is just pure speculation....
But could it be possible that the sell out down to 105 on BTCe could possibly be a mind game with the intent to remind all the speculative traders to put more orders in to buy coins? The net effect being that there will be a lot more buy orders on the books because of this, thus increasing confidence on the buy side of the order book and potentially creating price pressure to make the price go up?

For example, personally I trade very little, I keep my coin off the exchanges unless I am doing a bit of buying here and there,  but I haven't ever really put in a bunch of wishful thinking low buy orders, now I am considering it! Would a lot more buy orders on the order book even at lower / ridiculous levels raise the price of bitcoins?

it was probably a trader that stayed up all night to read the gox update, when it finally came in, he thought this is it the protocol is broken, and sold in a panic thinking the price would not bounce back because "this is the end of bitcoin"

and yes traders should have low ball orders for panic sells like this

probably wouldn't do much for the price, but it will mean cashing in on retarted panic sells

IDK, a simple google would have prevented all that. If I'm holding 8k bitcoin, I'm gonna google before I believe anything Mark says.

The problem is when you have an open order since friday and it doesn't get filled when it should.

I didn't get filled even when gox reached 500. Ridiculous. Open order my ass.

This happened to me as well.
I had a substantial buy set for months at 505 - it did not get filled when we touched 500.

I can't understand how that happened, if it was an open order how could get pass and sell at 500 when both of us were willing to buy at 505-506?

We noticed this days ago. Sometimes trades happen below what is possible according to the bid depth.

I believe it happened a couple of times when we were at $912 and trades went through around $900 while there was enough bid depth above $900.

Must be another bug that Gox can blame someone else for.

I'm still in, but I see a long road ahead.

Then take USD through Coinbase or Bitpay. There is no reason for a business not to accept bitcoin, other than laziness or the smallish user base.

Bad news, just any slightly bad news and we will go down like you haven't seen before. There is way too much fear in these people.

Hopefully they lost their coin to stronger hands.

+1 to full post

The fact that people agree with this post is frightening. They consistently, flat out lie, and frequently at that ("You can withdraw your USD it will just take a few days, weeks, insert timespan here"). They have about 0 support presence and never respond to the issue at hand until it has substantially effected bitcoins market cap. Their trade engine sucks, it mismatches orders and still lags even after they "fixed it."

Gox profits from their ineptitude and the only people who support them are likewise profiting on Gox's ineptitude.

Let me put money on Gox so I can support the GoxLoop, the GoxBuxPromise, the GoxLag, the lack of GoxSupport, the GoxOrderMismatcher, and Mark's pompous ass. Wait, nevermind, let me NOT do that.

Much more reasonable than this conspiracy about Mark manipulating the price is to think that someone has a lot to gain shorting btc on gox because it is holding a position on some derivative market somewhere that benefits from a low GOXBTC price.

MtGox isn't insolvent, anyone who is selling their coins now because of this fact will be feeling raped by a giant japanese octopus in a few weeks.

Besides that it is easy to realize that he has a business that generate ~100K USD/Day, why would he "manipulate" the price and crash his own exchange exposing himself to the risk of being even murdered? He has a lot more incentives to keep the business up and running, more than anyone here.

Stop with this insolvency nonsense, there is absolutely no evidence regarding that, to the contrary, there are huge evidences that he have a lot of money to maintain his business through the fees he is charging.

Yeah but letting this happen on his exchange is killing the last shreds of respect people might have for Gox. He should freeze everything right now and then make a clear, honest statement whenever he is ready.

Stop making sense.

People complain when he freezes trading. People complain when he doesn't.
People complain when he stops deposits/withdrawals. People complain when he doesn't.

When you cease being an exchange you should cease trading.

I'm attacking those of you who make people believe MtGox could have likely lost a 6 digit BTC sum over the malleability issue (because that's what it would take to make them insolvent).

How do you get to a 6 digit sum?

I'm curious about this too.

Twas the night before Goxxing, when all through Mark's house
Not a feature was working, not even Mark's mouse
The bitcoin were slung through trades with despair,
In hopes that St. Solvency soon would be there

The miners were slowing and profits were dead,
While visions of sugar-drinks danced in his head.
The llama they call Proudhon, and I in my cap,
Had long since forgotten the exchange that was crap.

When out from Mt. Gox there arose such a smatter,
I clicked on the link to see what was the matter.
Away from that window I clicked in a flash,
More opened and cluttered the further it crashed.

The doom on the boards from the new-fallen low
Gave the FUDsters some ammo with which they could sow.
When, with much thundering pain should appear,
But a bouncing blue ball, and a chap in headgear.

With a riddled fat rider, so ugly and sick
I knew in two seconds this guy was a dick.
Less rapid than sloth his announcements they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and then bitcoin he blamed!

"Now, asshole! now, cancer! now answer and quicken!
Go, stop it! You're putrid! go, go ponder and fix it!
To the site you must lurch! you should stop with the stall!
Now bounce away! Bounce away! Bounce away ball!"

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky.
So up to the exchange the ball he did move,
With a mind full of ploys, and some syphilis too.

And then, with no thinking, he said quite aloof
His address was changing to a virtual roof.
As I saw what he said, and was browsing around,
The price just kept moving faster and further down.

They weren't impressed that's for sure, with this end to their loot,
The masses pressed onward, the response was quite moot.
A wallet of coins he had flung out the back,
He was leaving forever, he had had already packed.

His drinks-they were sprinkled! his pimples how cherry!
His face in weird poses, his complexion quite scary!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the fat of his belly hid his penis below.

The stump of a drive he held tight in his teeth,
And I heard all the bitcoins cry out for relief!
He had a broad face and a giant round belly,
That shook when he sneered, like a bowlful of jelly!

He was a chubby chump, with a magic card shelf,
And I laughed when I learned it, in spite of myself!
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon had me wondering if bitcoin was dead.

He spoke of goxbux, PHP - that would work!
And filled all the accounts, then turned with a jerk.
And laying a cheek aside of his ball,
And giving a nod, out the exchange he hauled!

He bounced down the street, and his katana glistened,
I told you stupid fuckers, you all should have listened.
But I heard him exclaim, as he bounced out of site,
"Happy Goxxing to all", and "you've all been fucked right!"

Bitcoin is overhyped, overvalued, overcentralized...see Gox, Asic and the bitcoinfoundation full of corrupted fucktards who want to sell out to Goldman Sucks...

Any other crypto is better...especially Litecoin is faster and more promising....get off the dying horse...

Bitcoin is the entryway, after you are in the frictionless environment you can do anything you please. There are so many services around Bitcoin I expect most people will hold alts and then trade them for bitcoin when they want to spend them.

Don't bite the hand that feeds you!

I won't be happy until Mark is in jail or in a coffin. A lot of people lost a lot of money because of his shithole magic the gathering online xchange.
But how many people gained money because of MtGox?

Him and his employees... And whoever figured out the way to steal the 750,000 BTC. Anyone else who made money there paid fees to do so, so they are excluded.

TBH 750k coins is a hell of a lot to steal without notice, I suspect they were behind it all along. Nobody can do anything about it now lol.

It's a lot but they have been around a long time. When bitcoin was cheaper I'm sure they didn't care as much when they lost a few thousand at a time.
