Why is it that people put in huge buy orders when the price goes UP to a certain level.
Happened at 900, and again just now at 1000, and I'm sure many times before.
Why wait? Don't they end up paying more for their coins?

They want to make sure it breaks the resistances first. Technical Analysis dictates this behaviour, although it's not a scientific approach, since everyone uses it, everyone is acting the same ...

this is something that I can't wrap my head around. Isn't it enough that your bitcoins gain thousands of percent per year? I have few bitcoins and I'm happy with that, they will be worth a lot anyway if bitcoin will succeed. Why many of you have to have moar and moar bitcoins instead of just increase in value? When you speculate you are making volatile market and hurting bitcoin economy which is bad for all...

Human greed has no limit.

Sell at 650, and buy back at 450 => 44% more coins.
Sell at 650, and stop-loss buy at 1170 => 44% less coins.

So if you estimate that the pullback has any greater than 50% probability to happen, you should sell a part of your holdings. Simple as that.

Don't oversimplify things, please. You have a point, but you can't conclude your argument with: "simple as that". You make at least one (implicit) assumption: a linear risk/reward preference.

Let me fix this

Sell Buy at 650, and buy sell back at 450 1170 => 44% more coins.
Sell Buy at 650, and stop-loss buy sell at 1170 450 => 44% less coins.

as simple as that

That someone's able to manipulating the days destroyed chart? Lots of old coins moved but no significant increase in transaction volumes suggests age caused the spike, not volume.

Quit trying to predict the short term fluctuations, it's bad for your wallet.dat.

trading a too volatile market is suicidal.
You can play markets where the trending vs trading periods can be well recognized, which is clearly not the case in day trading.
On the weekly scale, it's clearly a strong bullish trend :

I'm willing to bet 1 BTC that we correct again under 575$ before we reach 2000$.

You don't need an opponent to win that bet : just buy 1.4036 BTC when its price is $575

When it reaches $2000 next, cash it out and you will win (2000-575)*1.4036 = $2000 = 1BTC

It's even better because if it doesn't reach $575 you don't lose anything.

Bitcoin just created a few tens of b$ out of nothing and may give the planet a few % of needed growth, all this for free, or nearly.

How? It's made some individuals wealthy, but only because other individuals have put money in, and those individuals are reliant on other new individuals putting money in to make their own returns. Bitcoin does not create money, it just moves it around. Only governments create money.

I never said that Bitcoin created money, it creates wealth. In people's mind, these 12,000,000 bitcoins are pretty well worth 10b$ , the money doesn't have to show up for this to be true, but the wealth is there in the bitcoins themselves.

Nope. Gold is ductile, not malleable.
Nit picking: It is both, actually.  Malleable means it can be hammered to a very thin sheet, ductile means it can be pulled through dies to make very fine wires.

Indeed you are right. Even more, ductile implies malleable, i.e. it needs to be malleable first before being able to be ductile.

Stop making sense.

People complain when he stops deposits/withdrawals. People complain when he doesn't.

Who took the money?
So, the trillion-dollar question: who took the money? Strictly speaking, we don’t know that yet. We’re talking about a sum of money so large that “humongous” and “enormous” aren’t sufficient to describe it – it’s 6% of all bitcoin in existence, and assuming bitcoin keeps growing to its potential, that means one individual is sitting on 6% of the world’s future trade and retail currency supply. In today’s USD value, such an amount would be on the order of 20 trillion US dollars, or roughly 250 times the fortune of today’s richest billionaire. It’s not exactly hard to see a motive here.

If the market was rational, this would be extremely bearish.

Not leaving anything in there until I do.

Go to the service subforum and the main Bistamp thread: user/hazek just answered my question about this issue. They apologize (sort of) for the glitch, he says happened while they rolled out an engine update, and he says the seller will be reimbursed. Bit monosyllabic, but in principle, the response I was hoping for when I asked yesterday and wrote about in several places.

Strange Monday at Huobi: a bit of trade in the morning and early afternoon, very little from 5:00 pm local time onwards.  Usually it is the other way around, trade peaks in the late afternoon and evenings.
how do you notice that and not have any bitcoin totally blows my mind.
In the late 1980s and early 1990s I spent as much time discussing space exploration on the USENET sci.space forum as I am spending here.   Here is one of my posts from that time.  By the way, "mining" then meant extracting precious elements from asteroids to build spaceships or space colonies.

But no one ever told me that I had to put at least one satellite into orbit, or capture at least a small asteroid of my own, for my ramblings to be worthy of that forum.  Wink

PS. In 1986 the internet was restricted to universities and some computer companies, such as DEC where I pretended to work worked, and was managed by (D)ARPA.   There was no WWW; only FTP, e-mail, and USENET (a distributed bulletin board with its own protocol, UUCP).  There were no anonymous users; if anyone misbehaved badly, other people would complain to his employer/university, and that usually solved the problem.   Can you imagine an internet with no spam, no advertising, no phishing, no viruses, no webpages that steal your cycles to mine bitcoins, no silly avatars? In 1986 the first computer worm was still 3 years away.   Sigh...  Cry

I bet you were a Millenium and Deuteros player

The minimum value is 0.000,000,01 BTC = 0;01 µBTC

And two coffees are worth about 10 mBTC today, I don't see where the display problem is.

1. The price is, in my view, too high, because it is based on future expectations of fiat profit as opposed to backed by an underlying economy. Doesn't mean it won't go higher for the same exact reason it is already too high.
While the real compelling use cases for using btc as payment (eg bitcoin only markets, you know which ones) could hypothetically gain traction and make the btc economy worth the actual price.

2. The decimals are not going to be a problem. The consensus so far seems to use bits = uBTC. Redditors already tip each others in hundreds of bits (which is in the same league as USD cents)

Suppose you want to buy an aircraft carrier which cost $ 4 billions (or a set of buildings, or a firm, or whatever around that price) with BTC
You'd need about 10,000,000 BTC which you'll have a lot of difficulty to get, and that's just one big transaction, nothing very unusual here. So I guess BTC's price will have to go up a lot if someone wants to be able to do real business with it.

Infinaty times zero is still zero.  Wink

Well, that is not quite true.

"infinity" is not a number as such. It's a class of equivalence (of all the bijectives sets alike).
To be allowed to use this, you must define what kind of infinity you are talking about,
for example you'd say "infinity" = "limit of the function f(x)=1/x with x->0"

And then, your "0" may well be a différent kind of "0" like "limit of the function g(x)=x with x->0"

That is, "0" * "infinity" in such case = 1 for whatever x.

The laws of nature (assuming you know all of them perfectly, and we don't) are perfectly predicable,

Quantum physics and chaos theory say no.
Chaos theory is still within a determinist framework.

Quantum physics and chaos theory

Not even sure that the small errors in the physic models are needed. The beauty of René Thom"s chaos theory is that the non-determinism lies deep within the maths.

As an example, even if you know very precisely the speed and the position of the solar's system planets, and the external perturbations, you just can't do the maths, the 3-bodies equations are already too complicated to be solved. And which planet will be ejected from the solar system is still a mystery.

You don't need to solve the equations though. In a deterministic universe, if you know precisely the starting conditions, you could run a simulation and get the prediction. Chaos theory says that small perturbations in the starting conditions can lead to vastly different outcomes. Quantum physics says small perturbations are intrinsic. Even with two initially identical systems, things will occur in one which will not in the other.

Ok, but I disagree about the simulation. You'd need infinite precision, or need infinite energy for this to be accurate enough, or need an analog model the same size than the system you want to modelize for this to work.

I think it's a bit more founded than this.
I used to compute the "impulse" that brought us to 1163 by the mean of (1163,382) , but bitcoin works better with a log scale, thus the use of the geometric mean that magically leads to 666.

It just means to me that we are still under the influence of that pulse, and nothing really new happend in between.

hhmmm? and how on Earth would he do that ?
He posts the genesis block of the secret chain, without the headline, mines a million bitcoins, and spends them all to buy a pizza and a coke.  The pizza parlor waits, say, six confirmations before delivering the pizza.  At that time the chain is N blocks long.  Then he posts the first N+1 blocks of the secret blockchain, according to which his million coins were not paid to the parlor, but just moved to another address of his own.  This chain is adopted by the network, since it is one block longer than the legitimate one.  Now he has a pizza and a coke, and still has all of his million bitcoins; whereas the parlor's address is now  empty.

You realize that

1- after 6 confirmations, the pizza is cold

2- after 6 confirmations from other parties, your precious premined blocks are useless and won't be accepted anymore by the blockchain, never, ever ? Unless you're trying to say that he would make some sort of 51% attack forcing his blocks in the chain, publicly ruining the whole project for the gain of a pizza ...

Do these pumps coincide with when BCH is more profitable to mine which relates to the diff level?

Judging from the spacing of the blocks issued (almost an hour apart), BCH doesn't seem too attractive/profitable at the moment.

Chain split tokens on BFX.

I don't think I have any of those. They were gifted to you at the time of the not-fork?

There was supposed to be a hard fork for S2X at blockheight 494,784 which had no replay protection and was supposed to stir panic among the natives. But the fork broke because of shitty coding so this weekends Bcash epic pump and dump never got off the ground.  So there hasn’t been a fork and now almost certainly won’t be because the main chain is too far ahead.

So you won’t have any because they don’t exist. The BFX 2X tokens are futures for delivery of a currently non-existent coin that you can buy and sell on BFX before the fork.  Leaving some rather unhappy bag holders today.

Eventually people will learn not to trust Chinese miners but probably not yet.

Lemme grab an aspirin and reread that at a later time in a calm environment...

So I was at a happy hour and a couple of colleagues brought up the subject of Bitcoin out of the blue. It was all I could do to bite my tongue, none of them know I own any bitcoin and never will.

So one of them brings up the old, tired Peter Schiff argument of "Well at least Gold has intrinsic value. You can make jewelry out of it. Bitcoin has no intrinsic value."

So I look at him and casually say, "So you can make jewelry out of gold. Fair enough. So what then, gives jewelry value?"

That look on his face when his brain seemed to completely lock up for about a minute was priceless.

And then when his brain started processing again, of course comes the requisite reply, "Um, what do you mean? Because jewelry...has gold in it?"

People simply don't understand the philosophical basis for human's valuing anything. Everything is just taken for granted.

For the same purpose I use as example Picasso's paintings. It's just some dry paint on a board, total value $30, but it's worth millions. I like it because beside its price the number of picassos's paintings is limited exactly like bitcoins, and the total capitalizations are alike.

Which coin is this? Bitstamp is number 10 in volume with $80 million.
Einsteineum on Bittrex. I flipped this one for a 100% profit and then it kept going another 100%. It has 15K of volume.

Bitstamp on the other hand has 9K of volume which pales in comparison to Bitfinex and other exchanges. Ive been trying to trade there and it's tough.

Yeah, but do you know about Unobtainium yet? It's crushing Einsteineum in volume, something like ~250K of volume. On that one secret exchange you can't get to. Sorry about that, sux to be you. Later, loser!

Of course. Every time BTC is rallying its "Bitcoin is getting big, the attitude of bitcoin has changed, and itll never crash". Its hard to make a prediction. We could go up to the moon first but probably still dip to $3K afterwards. $3K is based on the last deep horizontal support on the chart but still seems quite generous considering ATH gain is usually near-completely erased.

Watch out for all these lines as significant levels for bounces.

It's obvious what is happening, but us HODLers are historically reluctant to accept the facts we don't like. Last week I've sent 0.1 BTC to a friend, had to send 0.101 (0.001 fee) to have a chance that transaction will go through in reasonable time. 0.001 BTC = $15, and that was last week, this week situation with mempool is even worse, doubt that transaction will be confirmed without 0.002 fee. If anyone is going to send crypto between exchanges a lot in next period, he may need a coin with fast and low fee transactions and with decent volume so quick market buys/sells won't disturb the price, or they may kiss arbitraging opportunities goodbye. LTC fits the description, and this is also a reason someone is going to pay 6% premium on damned Tether. Moving BTC between exchanges for arbitraging has become mission impossible, and everyone agreed here that arbitraging will be the major force which will spill the futures price into BTC price, so people who are preparing for futures volatility action are probably doing it seriously with decent amounts of LTC and Tether on each exchange.

There is no cure for this situation except Lightning network, and I only hope that developers are aware of this and will deliver working version as soon as possible.

That's too much pain, you need to learn about transaction acceleration =>

The 100 tx per hour is filled in the first 30 seconds.

So If I am stuck with a slow transaction, every hour I have 30 seconds to push it through this, so I get it confirmed after a few more hours ?

Ok, good enough for me.

The obvious end game is to deny us general purpose computing devices altogether...because "terrorists" and "kiddie porn".  They will attempt to herd us into locked down walled gardens with "convenience".

The future of humanity is very much in play.

Notice these :
- Linux won't save you from that shit. That microcode run on its own processor and has access to all your memory, data and network interfaces
- Raspberry PI's proc has the same kind of shit too, as I heard.

So NSA can get into any machine made after 2015

We'll need to firewall these things hard, use Suricata to discover intrusion attempts, and switch to open source hardware, when such a thing will exist.
No doubt the open source community will react strongly on this one.

Can some of this be legitimate (on Bitfinex's side)?

If I opened an account there right now for example, and I deposited $5,000 in USD, would they then convert that to Tether and give me $5,000 Tether instead?

So them "printing Tethers out of thin air" can some/most/all/a little of it be money from actual customers?

Well, SOMETHING is happening. I think we can all agree on that.
Nah, every red candle gets bought back aggresively, so a bullish continuation is likely. Its just a normall downmove, thats all. Bitcoin has made 5 a 6 of such downmoves within this year. Its normall. Gaps between exhanges have been around for years also. Gdax, Bitfinex, Korean exchanges. Those prices have always been a bit different.

This is not just like all those other times. You can clearly see the support is weaker, between these daily candles, the volume that no longer ascends, and the order books that are shrinking rather than growing,

It's not complicated, really.

I think you don't get it. It's a Gödel theorem thing. If the price doesn't pass 24.777K you never win, since you have to wait forever to prove that you are right.
If bitcoin collapses you lose too, since it would meant that you were allowed to bet on an infinity numberof winning dates, that would be incorrect.

$1340

kinda off topic

but anyone have an idea on what kind of transaction fee I'd get hit on for a $1,634.00 BTC transaction?

thanks....trying to guess

use this : https://estimatefee.com/

Transaction fees do not depend on the quantity of BTC you send, they depend on the size of the transaction you make, that is, the number of addresses your wallet need to collect to gather the funds you want to send.

So no one can answer your question. If your wallet is very fragmented, it's gonna cost you a kidney.

I'd rather pay 200K for a Vanuatuan passport and a 1-way ticket.

Yeah, well, I ain't gonna fight the IRS on what they are due. That's just a bad time right there and too much stress.

I'm a proud, patriotic American Citizen.

Fuck you.

It's less stressful, possibly overpaying on quarterly taxes, than needing to stress about the prospect of a FUCKING MASSIVE bill due on April 15th of you didn't play by the rules.

Trust me. Having to deal with a FUCKING MASSIVE payment on April 15th is much more painful than making "very healthy" payments, quarterly, to the IRS.

It drives my partner crazy - that I round up to the nearest quarter-thousand when it comes to paying taxes - but I've been on the other side of owing FUCKING MASSIVE back taxes, and that's not something I ever want to deal with again in my lifetime.

I can feel your pain.

Decided to move all my BTC to a Segwit address. Have a feeling that LN will be released to the wild shortly.

No Segwit, no secure lightning network. It can work without the malleability fix but it's a lot frillier without it.

Haa ha! I learned something today - thanx.
Soulda read the specs though, but I was too lazy up to day.

[edit] : Gave it a 2nd thought. I can keep my stash in Legacy addr, and move a few % of it to Segwit addr for LN to take care of it. So its a matter of balance between things.

SBTC

Whats important is when you can deposit, not just trade.
Yobit doesn't allow deposits in any of these coins.

Currently:
  Bitcoin Diamond, sell on gate.io
  SuperBitcoin sell on okex.com

You can download clients from github and import you priv. keys.
Prices are slowly declining..

Once a correlation occurs, traders trade it to earn money and make it disappear.

I'm always amazed by the price devlopement, look at the KRW chart of BTC, 10% pump (washtrading) in 2h.
The pump in KRW is already gone but still alive in USD. Somehow i feel better that i don't have any real money invested...just playing around

Everything in Altlandia now has had a meaningless pump. They are running out of shitcoins to pump. I guess they'll have to go make some new ones real quick...

The alt pump rate drastically reduced since mcafee switched from offering daily alt recommendations to offering weekly ones. If he had kept up the daily rate he would have instigated 364 pumps within a year.

The guy is known to be a specialist about pumping.

The google keeps  sending me to "Joes Coinfork Sweep" or some such thing.

FWIW, it seems that most of the forks have made their blockchain snapshot.
So I just move my coins (again), coz it allows me to play with all these forked coins without risk, all in one move.

okex has published a note that they handle UBTC from now on.
Beside on ub.com they published the wallets, source and everything.

What else do you want ? Looks like a grand opening to me.

I'm thinking of the second distribution. I'm impressed anyone got any considering the evil minds behind it. I'm also impressed at how consistently priced all the forks are. The two I got rid were both in the 0.01 range as is UBTC.

Actually ... I was thinking about this. There are plenty of asks stepped to 0.02 0.03 0.04 etc... and a whole buch of bids at 0.01 ... I think people are taking position waiting for the first move,  i.e. a big pump ; maybe we have the chance to see it before it actually happens ?

Unfortunately as the electrum wallet failed to work properly, I need another 40 hours or so to get in that game Sad

Should we recheck our addresses? Do we have distribution?

huh? I don't get what you mean. UB made a snapshot of the blockchain at block 498777  ... whatever you had in the chain at that height should be there. Mine are.

Russia and China are still far behind with barely 2T each

You mean government reserves, rather than the population, I assume - since China probably as an entire country is probably a little more...

That would be 8,500 T for the US and 2,000 T pour China and Russia, not 8T and 2T.

but the US gold is reputed of 'poor quality' ... some even say that Fort Knox is empty.

Price going up, volume going down.....

Looking at Bitfinex 6hr chart.

What is your interpretation of this ?

Less demand at higher prices.

Yep, I edited my post above to include this little nugget :

The bear is back....

When the volume decrease, it means that the price movement is less significant

So more than being bearish, it means that it's getting less bullish.

Either way there is rampant price manipulation.  There is a thread around here somewhere where the OP tells everyone in advance that the market is going to crash on  monday 15th.  Im sure his accuracy was just random hmm.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/7pxg0d/2018_crypto_black_monday/

My theory is slightly different: wall street started loading up on btc once futures were a sure fact, and kept pumping until it established an upward avalanche-momentum when even moms and pops started panic-buying btc above 10K. While the noobs were buying above 10-15K the sharks loaded up on shorts (btc futures are still mostly short), and then, when their target was hit at 20K they pulled the trigger unloading their "physical" btc making out like bandits both because they sold at the top their btc and even more from their futures short bets placed at the top. A perfect controlled demolition, which they will repeat until it works imho, that's why they will let the price pump again after the next futures expiration.

Someone has to take the other side of the short.  How can they be “mostly” short?

You know, it's a bubble, ... blah blah blah

I paid for a hotel room on Expedia when the price was at like $8600 or so.

On the other hand, it's the first time I've spent bitcoins in a while because the transaction fees didn't make it worth it. I paid $300 for the room and only paid $1 in fees (could have lowered the fee if I wanted).

If you snatched the prize from somebody who would have otherwise won, I don't think they'd be too pleased about that, even if you do donate your windfall. You're working with new information now that wasn't available to the other participants, so you shouldn't be allowed to compete.
One of the reasons (there are more) I picked 28/08/2018 is because it also covered a good part of September.
If it is allowed to pick new dates now, it should also be allowed to change the previous picks too. Maybe even the ones that already "lost" because maybe (or surely) they would have picked a later date now.

On that note, I've read about an upcoming mini ice age a few times. Is there any recent update on that that confirms or rejects it?

Vast question.

- climate is whether over 30 years. So it's too soon to tell.
- There was a global warming during the last 100 years of about 0.1°C/10years
- No more warming since 1998, once you remove El Nino/LaNina effects (which cancel each other in time)
- Sun is probably having a period of low activity, that doesn't change much the energy it sends to us, but less activity (= less spots) means less magnetic field, means more cosmic rays reaching our atmosphere, meaning more seeded clouds, thus more albedo and then cold coming in... but this is still a theory
- look here for the latest temps : https://moyhu.blogspot.fr/p/latest-ice-and-temperature-data.html#NCAR
- best site ever for these questions : https://wattsupwiththat.com/

- last but not least : cold kills; warm weather makes our life easier.

We were burning forests way before we burned coal and oil. In fact, any living creature affects the weather. I understand that at least one american state has legislation regarding cow farts.

But more importantly, co2 is not a pollutant. On the contrary, it's plant food. Which is food for everything else. The more co2, the more oxygen, the more life. It might just be a good thing.

I totally agree with this. CO2 is a good gas. Earth is greening because of it and people stop dying from starvation.

What convinced me is that CO2 absorbs all the energy in its absorption bands after 10 meters of travel in the atmosphere.
So if you double the CO2, you just make this number becoming 5 meters, and nothing warms up more than it does already.

Plus more than 95% of c02 comes from natural sources not human influence. "Climate change" is bullshit. It's just cyclical and perfectly normal variance.

I also see the argument regarding CO2 level as too simplistic.
Maybe there is no climate change.
However, one thing is difficult to argue with: human population affects on environment.
This is discussed less, because the remedies are unknowable.

Specifically, humans may be causing the sixths extinction event in planet's history.
For those who would argue that it is "natural"-no it isn't because it is happening too fast-within 100-150 years, not millions of years.

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2015/jun/19/humans-creating-sixth-great-extinction-of-animal-species-say-scientists

Quote
Under a “natural” rate of extinction, the study said that two species go extinct per 10,000 species per 100 years, rather than the one species that previous work has assumed.

Modern rates of extinction were eight to 100 times higher , the authors found. For example, 477 vertebrates have gone extinct since 1900, rather than the nine that would be expected at natural rates.

Unfortunately, the way it may develop would be either for us to go non-biological and, hence, have little imprint on life OR natural habitats would become so stressed that extremely effective life forms would arise and finish us off one way or another.

(snip)

And the truth is that lefties are liars.

If you don't have anything factual, that can be communicated in three sentences or less, that can be checked by anyone with access to google within 30 seconds, it doesn't matter.

you get no argument from me re CO2 level. It might be irrelevant, and most likely is.
However, the rest of my post shows that we DID change this planet already.
This is not a political statement-it is a fact.

And this is another way of seeing it :

It's the purpose of mankind to dig the earth to recover all the carbon that the plants hid down there. Without us, CO2 would go below 150ppm and all life would disappear from the surface of the EArth.

It goes without saying that low Co2 could have been at least one of the factors behind ice ages.

It goes the other way around : if it gets cold, the oceans absorb CO2 and you see it going low with a 900-years delay
If it gets warm, CO2 is expelled by the oceans and the level raises, again with a 900-years delay. That delay implies that if there is a causation, it can't be the other way around.

Ice ages are driven mainly by the  Milankovitch cycles.

Also re: extinction event: Yes, but not because of anything climate related. Simply because we will run out of food.

We can make enough food for 9 billion people, or whatever number is being thrown around. If we can support 9 billion, we will overshoot and hit 10-12 billion. Then we will run out of food, and overcorrect to somewhere below 9 billion.

Billions of people are going to die. It won't be an extinction level event, but it will end the modern world as we know it. And it will be horrific. Enjoy!

Maybe it's not so dramatic.

Regarding this POW problem, instead of replacing the SHA-256 POW by something else, we could change Bitcoin so it accepts two POW algorithms at a time, lets say a CPU one and we keep SHA256 also, each algo having its own difficulty, a block being valid if signed by either algo.

This way ASICs would have to compete with CPUs with a fair ratio, and probably disappear after some time because of the costs.

Maybe one could even use PoS to vote on the ratio...

If you want an ASIC block every T1 minutes and a CPU block every T2 minutes, the ratio between the two is k=T1/T2
That ratio "k" may be chosen by the community or computed another way.

Once k is chosen, this can be proven true :

T1 = 10mn*((1+k)/k)  and T2=10mn*(1+k)

with k=1 (as many ASIC blocks than CPU blocks) that gives the obvious result : T1=T2=20mn
with k=2 (twice more CPUs than ASIC)  T1=15mn and T2=30mn

Technically no problem.

That ratio "k" may be chosen by the community or computed another way.

One k is chosen, this can be proven true :

T1 = 10mn*((1+k)/k)  and T2=10mn*(1+k)

with k=1 (as many ASIC blocks than CPU blocks) that gives the obvious result : T1=T2=20mn
with k=2 (twice more CPUs than ASIC)  T1=15mn and T2=30mn

Technically no problem.

Yes, I meant to use PoS to vote on the value of k. But setting it to a fixed value could be enough already.

It should be chosen so no private entity can gather 51% of the global POW. But gathering 51% of the CPU (on top of 51% of ASIC to grab back 51% of the global mining power) will probably be difficult since everyone will mine this part.
We could also make it a 3-POW thing : 1/3 CPU 1/3 GPU and 1/3 ASIC

OK...wait a minute...I kinda see a splotchy man in the moon...does that count?

If the holes are the eyes, stare at the nose and "passively" focus on the whole face without diverting your look from the nose.

the error in the calculus of the russians is as if there was something to lose :

that's what the sell outs of the medias don't know, they never lived it. A safe, prosperous America that was sending rocket on the moon with little people who would walk on it and come back to earth to tell it. where it was safe to walk almost anywhere (specially in the small towns across the continents, where you could sustain a family in the most advance condition in the world and history on 1 salary, where there was no planes crashing on skyscrappers, where aids and all the others illness weren't common place, where most kids weren't allergic or on some kind of fake or real brain disease, where you could make it anywhere without an heavy league (aka only for the rich and the diversity smoke screens), where mothers could let their kids play in the public park with no rational fear... when pollution and mass exctinctions hadn't kicked in...

who lived in those time? when america sended rocket to the moon and was trading? could you please tell us some stories of the time related to trading ? before the generations wars quick in...

edit: I know it will be hard to believe...

- waiting years to receive a car you ordered, to find that it's of poor workmanship and quality
- promises of colonizing the solar system while you toil in drudgery day in, day out
- living five adults to a two room apartment
- being told you are constructing utopia while the system crumbles around you
- 'totally not illegal taxi' taxis by private citizens moonlighting to make ends meet
- everything slaved to the needs of the military-industrial complex
- mandatory workplace political education

Can also recommend 'The Sultans' by Noel Barber.

I find fascinating that things I can witness everyday happening around me and having apparently no relation whatsoever the one with the other , were quoted by that Glubb Pacha guy as symptoms of decadent empires years ago. That scared the hell out of me.

One came just a few minutes ago. Just bad luck.

p(10mn) = probability to find a block in slot 0-10mn = 1/2
p(20mn) = p(slot 10mn-20mn) = 1/4 ( = 1/2 coz not found previously * 1/2 coz found in this 10mn slot)
p(30mn) = 1/8 (= 1/2 * 1/2 * 1/2)
p(40mn) = 1/16
p(50mn) = 1/32
p(1 hour) = 1/64

so probability to "not find a block in one hour" = 1/64 ~ 0.01562 .. could happen a couple of times a day
