America would not ban bitcoin. They would make life hell for people who owned it, sold it or bought it. But highly unlikely. Right now America is looking for a way to use bitcoin to its advantage. China does not like it because it cannot control it but cannot do much about it.

If all goes well we will see widespread adoption at least in the western world this year. Prices will have to increase to make room for the new players, the big players. The big question mark is google coin! Will it exist, what effects will it have. If there's anyone who can compete with the bitcoin network it's them.

Too bad a lot of people are waiting for months for 600$ coins so this bull trap might actually become a bear trap. Then we hit 800 again and it turns into a raccoon trap.

There is a Bitcoin future in China, whether the government bans it or not. The fact that it's useful for evading capital controls and other State restrictions guarantees it.

Is it?  Basically the only way to convert Yuan to/from Bitcoin now is through a Chinese bank.  Both the bank and the exchange will want your ID.

What do you mean exactly by "evading capital controls and State restrictions"?

There are many miners in China. The Chinese could buy or trade from them even if all the exchanges closed. One could buy from anyone in China who holds bitcoin and was willing to sell. Communist countries have always had black markets.

MTGOX released the actual version of their announcement , here it is.

Dear Dumbasses,"
"
You are so dumb and retarded for being patient this week, while we are working on initiating bitcoin
withdrawals into our own personal accounts. In addition to the technical issue, some dumbasses have been stopping us at our front door and crying about their bitcoins, and as a result our frappuccinos had to be drank at undesirable temperatures, so we had to relocate MtGox to our previous office building in Shibuya (details can be found here https://support.mtgox.com/home). The move,
combined with some other security and technical challenges, pushed back our progress of stealing your coins."
"
As we are smarter than all you dumbasses we will only provide an “update on an update”, while we nick you coins. We are committed to stealing every last one of your coins and will provide more fud as soon
as possible to keep everyone in the loop."
"
We do not give a flying fuck about the delays and deeply appreciate your kind fucking dumbness and
continuous retarded behaviour."
 "
Best regards,"
"
"

P.S. You've been fuckin GOXXED

Ok we have seen the reaction on the rumor that Mt.Gox enables withdrawals now.  This confirms my thoughts that we will see a bit of a "silkroadcrash affect" when they actually really succeed to resume withdrawals. The price will violently shoot up then. This will be the start sign of a new really to new highs. If however Mt.gox doesn't succeed in fixing their problems, we will have a slow slide down on the exchanges to maybe the 300 - 400 area.

I do not think they will resume anytime soon!

Why?

I feel there are deeper issues than what they are revealing since they always seem to have an excuse to prolong the process of fixing the problem. And the fact that they are putting blame on others shows that they are trying to hide the obvious by trying to focus the attention elsewhere.

Indeed, lot of stuff happened in few hours. Resignation from Bitcoin FOundation, tweets deleted, something's going on.

Wierd that people trade BTC/USD at btc-e!!! how easy you get your money in and out? and how do anyone trust them anyway ?

As far as I know, they are a big finance company with many operations in different countries. They seem pretty legit?

What makes stamp reliable in your opinion?

damn brother, how come?

the FUD....it got to me. And like many here, I was never rich, buying a few bitcoins a long time ago before these two huge bubbles has squashed my ability to remain rational.

edit: let this be a lesson to you all - HODL

At least don't sell while it's going down a lot. I first bought in near the top of the April rally.. but when it crashed I never sold.
I was in the red from then all the way to the China rally, so about half a year. Either go in with full faith in the long term, or stay out.

I did sell for a nice profit at $960 though. I'm not against shorting, but you need to know what you're doing.

Nicely done. I sold 90% @ $180 when it was dropping. Never bought back in because I didn't believe it would rise so quickly. Missed out on $1200. Then I made a desperation move and sold my last 10% @ $860 on Mtgox when it was dropping. Made another gutsy move and bought int at $700 and sold at $1000. But if I had just held all the way until $1200. I still think about that.

I think of the time when I could of invested in buying coins instead of buying mining equipment from BFL..! Ahhhhh...

the coins are gone, 'temporary unavailable' means he hoped he could make it back over time following the crisis strategy

I'm obviously speculating but nobody is deluded enough to think that they can make their entire deposit balance back by trading coins that don't exist. Dont forget people are just trading numbers in a database if that amount is lost then there are no coins to make back.

Mark has the coins. He just wants them all for himself. He will give the dangerous people their money who threaten his life and keep the rest.

No, I'm defending the fact that a commodity does not need a "market system" to have an exchange rate.

"Market system" being what I am assuming you mean as a group of centralized exchanges where we can see in real time the most recent trades between one commodity and another.

Ok then, when you'll take away all the centralized exchanges and leave localbitcoins to handle exchange, then what do you think will be the volume of trade and the price of bitcoin? Do you really think that any serious investor will buy their coins from craigslist?
Without an centralized exchange system, then bitcoin will be values as much as bitcoin was valued when it didn't have a centralized exchange system.

You probably shouldn't underestimate your lack of imagination that is limiting the extent and coherence of your arguments.

Let's just say that you are not the type of intellect that I would rate to be inventing (or even merely imagining) anything like a P2P internet crypto-currency any time soon, or any other world changing technology that humanity can benefit from, like a P2P exchange for P2P currencies.

For example, check this out. This will widen your imagination Wink

That is the dumbest answer I've seen from you yet.

As much as it annoys me that you keep introducing new reasons of why bitcoin is not for you whenever an argument shows that it is not a black and white answer and bitcoin could have merit I do value that this discussion is taking place with solid arguments.

The potential for getting rich is a reflection of the high risks you are actually pointing out.
Bitcoin could be replaced by some other crypto currency.
All the points you are making are the reasons why bitcoins current value is what it is and why it might be magnitudes more once they are resolved.
Just like you many many people are saying the risk is too high.

Please don't put words into my mouth. I have never said that bitcoin is not for me. I have earned quite a buck with investing in bitcoin. The disagreement comes where I don't see that bitcoin has a very long future infront of it. I see about a year or maybe two.
And I have been telling if the problems with the current market threat is resolved, then the price can go up.

It seems that if you don't agree with the constant shouts of "now this is the bottom and it will go up!" or arguments like "bitcoin will be used for decades to come!" then people here will actually start to demonize you, with acting like you are saying things that you have never actually said.

Hi- just a thought... If Bitcoin has a year or two, then whatever is going to replace it, then it must already be around right now.... so which coin is it? and what does it do that is going to make it out compete Bitcoin in your opinion?

Ripple.

Rumor has it that Jed is currently looking for a Frenchman who has a Frenchman roommate that both code to sell it to one of them for an undisclosed amount. Sometimes, you just can't make this shit up.

Ahh, so ripple was made by Mark K and his plan is to cripple bitcoin so his ripple will go to da moon!

I believe the most important news now is what happened to the 750k btc (+120k gox)

Did they confirm they were in fact stolen and when it happened?

it makes absolutely no sense that 750k coins are stolen

Of course Karpeles is going to say they were stolen. He can't very well say he just lost them. He blamed the core protocol. He blames everyone but himself. The relevant matter is that the coins are GONE, and they are not sitting in one big wallet waiting to be dumped.  supply and demand- price is going to go up.

It is obvious he has stolen the coins himself with help from a few others. And has managed (somehow) to fuck with everyone until now. He has been using stalling tactics to steal as many coins as he can. This is one of the biggest heists in history! You would have to be Jesus not to be tempted by such a heist.

Yes, mtgox may have had a good business for the while and they enjoyed it while it lasted. And now that wall st is getting involved, how long do you think his income would last? Its the same person from before. They are building imaginary walls, then buying them up and setting lower ones. All in hopes of causing a panic and getting cheap coins! Wonder who!?

People often joke that "America has the worst form of government on the planet except for all the others." It ain't perfect.

And it certainly isn't better than all the others.  It has strengths and weaknesses in comparison to other large nation-states, and those are a matter of taste.  There are small nation-states which have systems which are vastly preferable to the U.S. system, in my opinion, but they are generally special cases.  Iceland is not too bad.  Norway is fairly tolerable.  I could almost stand Scotland.  Singapore is rather decent.  Chile, quite nice.  Conceivably Paraguay.  But then I've not lived there long enough to see the worst aspects, to judge how deeply they disturb me.

We should get together and buy an island with bitcoins, call it Satoshi Island and have the currency as BTC of course, use the bitcoin protocol to vote trade etc.. and live happily ever after.

Whats up with the movement the last 3 days? I've never seen this currency stay at the same price for so long really. Explain? For the last months the bots been all over the place (bitstamp for example) and trading/manipulating the price like crazy. Why not now?

Actually the price charts have been this dull before: e.g. from Dec/30 to Jan/2,  from Jan/20 to Jan/24, and from Jan/29 to Feb/05.

The first interval must be connected to the Western new year, the last one spans the Chinese New Year holidays.   I have no guess for  Jan20--24.

Investors must now be exhausted after seven straight days of highly intense trading and unbelievable news.  So, now that the bad news have ceased, many of them may have relaxed and paused for a while.

Also, the definitive closure of MtGOX removed a major source of "noise" in the market.  For example, many ill-informed investors may have tried to do arbitrage with MtGOX.  Others may have been "withdrawing" BTC from it via bitcoinbuilder and selling it on the other markets.  And perhaps the MtGOX thieves were trying to unload their booty.  Grin

Amen brother

My guess is, people are waiting to see what happens. Trust is damaged and will take a while to get people spending again. Also, people have put their coins into cold storage following all the recent rumors and problems.

Until now I have just bought and hold and tried to do my learning and now I feel I should be able to do it. Made some imaginary calls "now I sell" "now I buy" for awhile now and it seems more likely that I can make more btc than lose some in the long run. Let's see how it goes.

Start with tiny money and work yourself up, pretty much everyone is simply trading money for experience for quite some time.

1). The exchanges appear to be unregulated and trusting them can lead to a load of heartache (Read MtGox here).
2). Time taken to send bitcoins to these exchanges (with confirmations) can be rather lengthy and this may lead to missing any good buy/sell windows.

With these 2 issues in mind, can anyone see a way round them so that you can leave coins on exchanges safely? Or at least speed up the transaction?

check out Open Transaction - this technology should be coming to an exchange near you, just ask for it. (Supply and Demand)

How would open transactions be implemented to current exchanges in your opinion?

Thanks

You need to re-assess, Mark Karpeles and the blatant manipulation have left the building. These are serious buyers, the UK news is huge, investment money will start pouring in.

By the way, by UK, I mean United Kingdom treating bitcoin as a currency for tax purposes and scrapping VAT on Bitcoin. Not Ukraine, which although is pretty awful for those in the UKraine, Europe has become very good at containing conflict, it would be different if they were already in the EU, then we would be in serious trouble, but I don't think Putin would have risked that.

Close. I think rather well of housewives and chaste girls. It's just that there are so few of them. I even like trashy chicks until they start to lose their looks and conveniently get ex-slutty (at least in public). My mom prolly did me a disservice by being such a good example and setting the bar too high.

Even easier if you are trading internationally. It's hard to email gold. BTC is for the supplies you couldn't get locally.

Yes but if we were in the same situation as the people in Bosnia, then it would be a bit more difficult to send bitcoins.

Simple, what goes up must come down.

There's alot going for BTC right now. I dont see the news about FBI really affecting the market anymore than this. If anything it should be seen as positive. Since the US government has once again accepted BTC.

Wonder how long it took them to pump all that water out.

We going for a weekend rally? And what day does this whole auction thing come to a head? Is it June 27th?

Yeah, I believe the auction ends on the 27th. Hope the buyers don't dump it all afterwards.

This is what everyone is worried about and this is what is suppressing the price.

IMHO the caliber of the people involved in the auction is obvious. These people are looking for Bitcoins long term success.

The chances of them dumping it all immediately are the same as Ghash using their occasional 51% to attack us.

Why would someone heavily invested in bitcoin make a concerted effort to destroy it?
Who said anything about destroying bitcoin? It would just be a trade, and once the trade is complete they wouldn't be invested anymore. However, I don't see anyone doing this unless they can buy at least 30% below market rates.

IMHO, these people are not looking for a quick profit.

Being left behind is always a risk. Price seems steady for now and positive news is coming in. It looks like we may be headed upward soon but the market is still jittery so beware.
