I don't really see it as wishful thinking as the only thing that has been as spectacular as the price rises has been the following crashes, right now that is bitcoin's world. I also seem to remember back in April people were saying the Chinese were snapping up bitcoin relentlessly and we know how that turned out.
I distinctly remember having the feeling that people now definitely went ape-shit crazy for about a week before the crash. I just don't have this feeling nowadays (yet).
Might be wishful thinking (wishful "feeling") on my part also, though.

(Bitstamp figures used) If we set the beginning of the current upmove to $122, which was the base in early October, and the high point to $205.4, we have the following Fibonacci levels:
1st: $173.5
2nd: $153.9
3rd: $141.7
I have been successfully trading but watching the 2nd level almost always. If we are talking about a daily move, the base is the plateau in the last 12-24 hours, if medium-term move, the base is the last consensus when price was flat for several days or weeks.
We already touched $157 and now the price is going up with a vengeance. There are several scenarios:
- Price will continue to go up, and surpass the intermediate high of $205 in a few days, so that this will be remembered as a flashcrash. In February-March we had several of them, shaving off 20-30% of the price but leaving no mark except on those who sold out and did not manage to buy back in.
- Price will fall back to where we started ($120s), which questions the viability of the whole supposed uptrend or this October, turning it to a bull trap. meh87 is advocating this.
- We are currently experiencing a Fibonacci retracement on our way to higher highs. This would point to a reasonable probability of revisiting $150s, and underline the support found there. If I had money in the exchange, I would try to fish from there, and not hope for going any lower. If several days pass and the uptrend is resumed, the scenario still holds but the opportunity to buy has already passed.

I can't figure out if you are just or troll or you really believe that much in Ripple. Ripple has done nothing but plummet the last few months. There is zero reason this coin is worth 2 billion and i am glad it was put back on Crypto market cap because it will accelerate the mass exodus from a coin that is going nowhere.
The number 1 reason this type of coin and NXT and QRK and any other coin will ultimately fail is because you cannot buy adoption, a community, an economy. You cannot purchase or acquire in any way the ecosystem that will make the coin actually worth more than zero.
Mined coins are ingenious because the ecosystem is organic, the ecosystem is first created by the miner and then others eventually join in to make a community.
Very similar to the gold mining era in the USA, huge communities would blossom overnight to support mining towns. The connected infrastructure created San Francisco.
However, you cannot buy a few hundred people put them in a town and wave your hands dramatically and say come here, come here, buy my gold!!

OK so 20 mins ago I sent two transactions and not only were they not included in the next block (even though they had generous fees attached) they don't even show up on the recipients addresses. So far every single time I have made a transaction it would at least show up, unconfirmed, at the recipients address. Anyone had this happen before? It's making me nervous, it was no small sum of BTC.

Colored Coins are really similar to Ripple. But, in my opinion, having this based on bitcoin blockchain is not an advantage, it's slow.
However Ripple could die if it can't achieve a critical mass, it could also become what bitcoin+colored coins try to do but in a better (no mining, electricity waste and power concentration between few miner) and faster way (instant validation +/- 5sec).

No, please don't listen to mah87. Ripple is the largest scam around. It's basically a 100% pre-mined coin with no actual mining to protect the network. It's a centralized alternative to Bitcoin. Yes so are fiat currencies.

The Ripple payment network was a great idea and I was enthusiastic about whether it would work in practice.
Then the founders turned it into a get rich quick scheme by creating a currency (XRP, by many referred to as Ripple). This cured me of any form of belief in the people behind Ripple. The addition of a currency was and is completely unnecessary and even if the payment system take hold the value of the currency should approach zero.
I hope someone retries to make Ripple as it was supposed to be and I'll be curious about the practical feasibility of a distributed trust/IOU network.

Ripple has an interesting idea but fundamentally solving decentralized IOUs with a level of trust like bitcoin has yet to be invented.
A Gateway can go under and it is incentivized to cover up as long as possible. This trust issue can't be trivially removed

Pretty much. I finally did my homework on it, just in case. Read the description of how everything worked on the official website, and as a bitcoin user, there were a lot of unanswered questions and red flags left in my mind that I couldn't get any further clarity on from the site. I ventured off the site to read some outside perspectives, and eventually stumbled upon
http://ripplescam.org/ which explained the things I had questions about succinctly, and exactly how I feared they might work.
To be honest, I don't see any advantage to ripple, as a currency. It exists on an infrastructure that reduces currency exchange fees as a result of replacing middleman institutions with distributed consumer risk (all the while collecting fees for "gateways"). It's still a debt based system, and a centralized one, at that. "Distributed" does not mean "decentralized", people. Please be very aware of that fact. If the government decides to shut down the company, then it's shut down. XRP goes to 0. If the company decides to close it's own doors, you have the same problem. They are also verifying their own transactions. Transactions that are based on a trust system.
While there are many flaws to ripple as a store of value, it still manages to market itself from the angle of seamless trades between currencies. Be careful with that idea though, it's something that is not unique to ripple at all. There is literally nothing standing in the way of a web service doing the exact same thing with bitcoin instead of XRP. Just connecting people and "gateways" on a trust network of mutual currency trade. That's not an exclusive feature of XRP, as they might lead you to believe.

What was wrong with the original model of ripple which was debt-based and didn't have a unit with a volatile value which could be pumped and dumped?
XRP's value is like a postage stamp, a transaction fee.
It could be a good stepping stone to integrate with banking but its already getting left behind in that and many of its features can be handled with Bitcoin contracts.

I get the Idea of how brokers work, but an Exchange dealing with Bitcoin is simply acting an Escrow while brokers have a different business model than a Bitcoin exchange.
Stock exchanges are not designed for everyone, but Bitcoin is designed to be widely used for normal users who wont go through the hassle of opening an account and linking it to an exchange just to buy a bitcoin.
coinbase operates the same way as you described above, but coinbase without an exchanges like Bitstamp wont be possible, unless the adoption of Bitcoin by merchants and their daily transaction volume becomes equal to the need of users to buy/sell.
Believe me if I tell you that I did a thorough due diligence on the matter and I've received formal replies from financial regulators on more than one EU country: Bitstamp is absolutely non compliant under EU regulations, I can guarantee you that.
Coinbase is a completely different business: they are not an "exchange", they are a "
bureau de change" (like the one in which you exchange currency at the airport): the main difference is that when you are buying or selling on Coinbase your legal counterpart is Coinbase itself, and NOT another customer like it happens on Bitstamp, Kraken, etc.. When you are sending money to Coinbase from a legal POV you are transacting with Coinbase itself, they are not holding the money on your behalf while you transact with another customer - the reason they are operating that way and NOT as an exchange of the kind of Bitstamp (which is much more profitable revenue wise) is PRECISELY because they are a serious company and they know they cannot do that - at least currently, as having a banking license (as it IS required for a trading exchangr as per Bitstamp) is not only expensive but very lengthy as the barriers for newcomers are high.
If you read carefully the ToS of the emerging exchanges you will see hints of what I'm saying: the new one based on the UK is registered as a "bureau de change" in a Coinbase fashion precisely to avoid to adquire a banking license; the one just launched in Mexico says clearly that by sending them money you are adquiring their own virtual currency, which only purpose is to buy and sell cryptos, and that they DO NOT HOLD customer deposits (because from a legal POV you are buying their own "virtual currency" by wiring them money) - those are just tricks to try to avoid the hard cold truth, which is that you need to be a bank to hold deposits on behalf of third parties.
About the escrow: I've never looked into that business model, but I approached regulators explaining them EXACTLY how a Bitcoin exchange work and they have told me that under the PSP (payment service provider) / financial intermediaries EU regulation I needed to either have a banking license or to have a banking partner holding, controlling and supervising all customer deposits (because that money is not YOURS, it belongs to your customer). While I'm ignorant on that aspect, at this stage I'd bet that an escrow would need to comply with the same regulation, as they are acting as financial intermediaries by holding funds that do not belong to them.
Kraken is also well known to be fully compliant and extremely careful about that (and about security) so I guess this model is possible too right ?

Yes. Saw that item about Athey, and agree that the value of XRP is not massively important. I remain unconvinced about the trust model, and the utility of its gateways. It works, but does it have the potential of even NXT or Etherium, let alone Bitcoin? I will watch longer before investing in XRP.
I think they are far beyond ethereum in term of software dev. but they are moving quietly. In terms of speculation nothing to expect before some real utility/traction but it could arrive within 6months I think and looking at the low volume + only 75k account the price could rise dramatycally eventually.

The file is nothing complicated. Each line is a trade on the Huobi.com exchange, as reported by Bitcoinwisdom.com's chart (lower right corner). The columns are date, time, the price in CNY (yuan), and the amont of BTC traded.
That data may be useful to people who find such data useful.
E. g. to compute trades per minute, average transaction size, etc..
I still don't know of any place that offers such logs for download. One could get them throgh the charting API, I suppose, but that requires some programming anyway; maybe I will do that some day, hopefully before Huobi closes for good. Copy-paste from the chart seems simpler for short samples.

Exchanges are not needed for Bitcoin. Physical gold and silver don't have exchanges (yes they do, in theory, the COMEX and the like, but they are scammy places that do more harm than good to the ecosystem and no ordinary investor uses them).
PM 's have dealers. You want to buy/sell? Contact dealer. The dealers balance their positions between them, you only need one contact. Nobody gets scammed as you walk away with the product.
When the dealer network feels pressure that the price should be higher, make no mistake it will rise, as high as necessary.
Crying about Bitcoin's demise if the exchanges are choked is uninformed at best. I would rather do away with the exchanges in one fell swoop, if that would hasten the appearing of trustable dealers.

I think Ripple is at best a stepping stone toward a more crypto centric mainstream and not in any way an improvement on the satoshi concept. Ripple doesn't allow for use cases without counterparty risk unless you're strictly in XRP, and their distribution of XRP basically guarantees that will never happen. This is not different with the Ripple Network. So you can use it as a way to transfer your crypto or anything. If it's a decentralized trustless token like bitcoin then you can (and you should) withdraw it to your wallet as soon as your transfer/trade is done.
So this has the same problems, you need to trust an exchange platform/gateway the time it takes for you to trade/transfer your coins.
Otherwise there are only advantages using such system.

I wouuld rather think that he paid below market, say 570$/BTC. If he had paid more than market, he surely would have said so, in order to bolster confidence and help push the price up.

This is correct. XRP will be used by market makers to bring liquidity to the system. It happens that paths between two gateways don't have enough liquidity to transact properly. XRP are a tool to work this around.
For example if there is no path between Peruvian nuevo sol and Ruble you can work this way : Sol => XRP => Ruble
This should be automated with autobridging. (Which is not implemented yet I know, but it seems work is progressing).
