This is nonsense.  The only reason you can type such a thing right now is because nobody has been priced out of on-chain transactions yet.  As soon as that happens (which is definitely not far away), that's when bitcoin hits a wall due to what I said here:


This is the gorilla in the room.  It turns out Roger Ver is wrong because slightly bigger blocks solves nothing.  Bitcoin would require a full blown LN capacity or it doesn't really have a value proposition.  The only question is, can the LN actually function?  It seems like to me you would have to place all channel closing in a centralized queue, so I have my doubts about LN.  And that is the real fundamental analysis of Bitcoin that most people in this thread either can't comprehend or sort of know there are issues like this but choose to ignore them and hope someone will pump it anyway.

So for bitcoin holders to have any value for their coins would need both miners to adopt segwit and LN to actually work in a decentralized manner, and there is currently no assurance for either one.  Although, I think it's likely they will pass segwit once people figure the conclusion I derive is true.  But then you still need LN to work in a decentralized manner or it's just some obfuscated form of Paypal.  Economy of scale might already cause terminal centralization for the 1st tier bitcoin network in the first place though, by driving the reqs to participate to corporation level.

From a fundamental perspective, people that can actually understand how all these variables interact (which I think are very few) know that in current state bitcoin is relatively broken in terms of long term workability.  The only question is how high can the price go before people figure that out.

my point is that even today, hell, even if bitcoin price tanks to $100 - no matter what price - not every existing millionaire can have one bitcoin. even if all existing btc hodlers would sell all their coins. there is no theoretical way possible, because there are more millionaires than bitcoins. to me this is an interesting fact, to lots of others it seems silly. i don´t understand why people get so itchy about it.

The rest of the world seeing that the Chinese exchanges were fake volume will either now realize that the jump in price was not due to Chinese rushing to get their money out of China or they will spin it as the Chinese government has cracked down on Chinese Bitcoin purchases and they are now moving their money in other ways.

My confidence in the media points to them choosing the latter.

Material things have a clear and defined utility. There is some kind of internal values for objects.

I think we will hit or at least come within striking distance of $1,000. I think the biggest thing right now is Segwit/Scaling-issues. As soon as this is resolved, we will see the market choose a direction. It will definitely make a shift, but we will have to see whether that is up or down.

Frankly I would prefer the scaling debate to come to an end more than I would want us to go on a moon shot. The worrying thing is Segwit is stalling for adoption. The current 25% mining power going to Segwit is nowhere near enough, and I have strong doubts any scaling solution will gain that much marketshare. With Bitcoin major mining pools making up more than 5% of the network [per pool] just one owner of a pool is all it takes for the change not to go through. That is insane for something as "decentralized" as Bitcoin [I know the centralization of Bitcoin has long been acknowledged].

Doubling in price in half the time pattern essentially still holding for this exponential bull run ... late March 1600-1800, mid-May 3200-3600, early June insane vertical up to 6500-7200 and pop. For approximate repeat of 2013 halving bull adoption wave blow-off.

I'm taking the 'low' base beginning of the bull run as 200-225 in June '15, doubling to 450 around the actual reward halving in June '16 (12 months doubling time), then doubling again to 900 in Dec '16 (6 months doubling time) ... et cetera, et cetera, we shall see.

Nov. 13 did not happen in a vacuum, there was a similarly long rising build up to the final 'doubling in a week' climactic event ... and none two will be exactly alike anyway.

Price and blocksize hardlimit are not correlated.

Bitcoin has a lot more going on than some mere simplistic (and even seemingly non-technical issue) such as blocksize hardlimit.  Yeah, sure granted there is some whining and politics around the blocksize hardlimit issue, but the correlation to price is quite tangential and sporadic and largely difficult to pinpoint in terms of directness... oh yeah, and even if there is some correlation, we have the other concept that even assuming correlation, that does not equal causation.

I understand that there are various second layer solutions, including lightning network, that would likely be able to more easily build, once seg wit goes live - but we all should know by now that the support for segwit has not been growing.. and it seems to be somewhat flat at the moment - unless there is some kind of under ground support that is still working on getting it's shit together regarding signaling for segwit.

Concededly, we are a bit less than 3 months into the signaling for segwit period, so we have another 9 months or so before other considerations may need to be employed - if this one does not get activated in that time under currently proposed conditions.  

It does seem that activating seg wit would be very good and bullish for bitcoin, and probably much beyond a $2k scenario (even though nothing is guaranteed in bitcoinlandia)

There are no 'naked' shorts in bitcoin, it comes from a time when there was a gap of some days between trade and settlement, when the very brave could 'sell' without having borrowed the underlying and have a few days to rebuy before the books were reconciled. I don't know of any bitcoin exchange that allows you to sell without owning or borrowing (against collateral that would be called).

I suppose if your tinhat is especially shiny you might think the house itself plays that game...

What will happen now is that it's gonna get priced in and then there will be a huge dump if it doesn't get approved.

It is bullish, but only for the very short term. I think it's a good indicator that the price wants to re-test the $1130-40 level near the old Bitstamp ATH. But it's no guarantee that the price will cross that important mark.

The power of the bullish trend is slowly going away, so the most probable outcome for me is a double top (a new local high above $1100). $1100 should be a sure bet for now, but after passing that level I would be very careful - specially because of the still unsolved blocksize debate which is, if anything, a possible source of bad news that could emerge every day.

But isn't the FED raising the rate supposed to pump Bitcoin? If there's no ETF, but the FED raises the rate at the same time the two events should cancel each other out, and Bitcoin's price should either stay flat or pump.

If all those coins are trapped in China and demand continues to grow in the rest of the world, what will that do to prices?

To me, considerations like this are more meaningful than mere "technical" analysis.

Not to mention, I have a sinking suspicion (as others have noted too) that some of the Chinese exchanges could be insolvent, might have been for a long time now.  They've probably gotten away with naked shorting for a while now.

If the PBoC ever starts to audit them, they might be in trouble.

Everyone says the Gox ATH was manipulated, but at the highest price it's a big psychological barrier. I'll be happy if it takes another week to go above the bitstamp ATH. I expected more of a battle to get over $1100.

First let's conquer Bitcoin/gold-ounce parity.

We achieved it at Gox for about a minute (I was watching) back in 2013.

It bounced back down almost immediately. Very soon after that, China declared Bitcoin illegal for banking and the price plummeted. Coincidence? Maybe, maybe not.

Again this January, when the price of a bitcoin got close the price of an ounce of gold, the PBOC made an announcement that panicked the market. Coincidence? Maybe, maybe not.

Regardless of tinfoil-hat conspiracy theories, I consider gold ounce parity to be the real ATH we still have to beat.

I'm not married to segwit, but I'm unconvinced that BU or any hardfork-driven change to the actual protocol is necessary or even the right move. I rarely hear any talks about the merits of BU over segwit, 90% of the time the opinions of that community become so personal and political that it's hard to even hear reason in their arguments. When you don't have the merits to back up your argument you rely on propaganda, but I'm getting sick of being told bitcoin is dying unless some drastic HF happens right now. That is just bullshit and my vision of bitcoin is not as shortsighted as these people. I'm okay with bitcoin being the way it is right now, scaling is gonna happen one way or another... and I will back the side that has received extensive testing and review. Segwit offers most of what people wanted to begin with, which is a near doubling of transaction capacity, virtually all of the technical community supports it, and wallets are ready to go with that support. I just don't see people's attraction to BU and I have done my due diligence

I see that after Friday's drama we seem to have gotten back to Bitcoin's normal state of affairs, creeping upward... currently $1205USD (Bitcoinaverage).

In my opinion, there were more people anticipating ETF rejection than approval, as evidenced by polls ranging from 30%-50% expecting acceptance.

This led many to save the fiat that they otherwise would have spent on bitcoins during the period leading up to the decision, hoping to buy a deep dip.

When the dip wasn't as deep as anticipated, they waited for a further dip which hasn't come yet. They're now starting to realize that another large drop might not immediately happen, so they're starting to use those reserved funds to buy more coins while the price is still down.

Hopefully most of us were smart enough to buy when prices were below $1100 and not get too greedy by waiting for it to drop much below $1000.

Personally, when I saw it momentarily go below $1000 and bounce right back up over again, I made my move and bought my coins.

Now in retrospect I'm glad I did.

Thats true. I hodl. I think that the Segwit vs BU is the last horde that bitcoin has to take before it moons.

Someone who was hoping to click his brokerage site button to buy bitcoin ETF is not going to bother with figuring out how to work paper wallets ... but some of them might take the plunge with an ezy pezy hardware wallet. The demand is still there, it is just very latent, lazy and waiting for convenience. But some of that latent ETF demand will make it to market ... say 5-10% conservatively of the expected, what was it?, $300 million in the first week they were spouting about.

As I wrote a few posts ago, in 97, my bandwidth, cpu, storage, ram, was 1/1000th of what I now have.

My pc could probably process ...1kb blocks back then... now 1mb... in 20 years, maybe 1gb.

Satoshi never intended for the 1mb to be set indefinitely. He said, we'll raise it when needed.

Obviously you don't want to have too much, because then it hurts in decentralization and leaves the door open for spamming the blockchain.

It just needs a proper balance.

I think the choices that exist right now may not be enough to gather a good consensus (like 90%+) which may in turn create the need for a new proposal.

- BU is trash, nobody in their right mind wants it.
- Segwit will not get adopted because it increases "complexity" and it makes some miners uncomfortable (translation for: "I like the bitcoin I know, I don't want it to change, with the remote chance it introduces unknown risks")

So, given that neither will go ahead, we'll have to make some other arrangement like a 2mb upgrade in the short term, if we don't want to stick with 1mb. But this option doesn't exist right now and should be programmed and provided by core (=reputable source of code).

Let's imagine we had hard forked to 2mb and the limit was reached.

The Bitcoin price would be between 2-3k PER COIN right now. The Market cap would be somewhere around 40 BILLION.

Ethererum, Dash and Monero would be WAY down, they definitely wouldn't be hitting their highs right now.

We'd have 2x the amount of transaction throughput which means there would be far less mempool backlogs, less network congestion and lower fees, which would overall create a MUCH better user experience.

In other words, it's a GOOD problem to have.

But you crybaby pussies, who apparently think 2017 tech can't handle >1mb, have forced the rise of altcoins, and have irreparably damaged Bitcoin's % of marketshare, and now markets are switching over to ethereum / dash / monero.

It's EFFING RIDICULOUS. These are UTTER FAILURES from a business perspective. It is also an utter failure from the perspective of User Experience. This is why one can only conclude that Bitcoin Core has failed completely in leadership, tactics, and effectiveness, they don't even seem to care about the user experience. All in the name of creating a "fee market" which is not yet needed, and won't be needed for a few more decades down the line.

BU at this point is the only thing that can really save bitcoin.

We clearly don't see eye to eye. The thing is, Bitcoin as it is right now is perfectly fine with me. You will have to fork the network to get what you want, and I will continue using the existing rules. If you want to deviate from Satoshi's original vision with this nonsense, then Core should go and create their own altcoin instead of attempting a hostile takeover, enforcing an artificial blocksize limit and then FORCING people onto THEIR off-chain solutions. This is ethically and morally wrong, and so is their campaign of censorship they have engaged in to justify this.

No, the best solution is lightning network, that comes on top of segwit. If you're sending some really small transaction such as one rupee, there will be no fee.

We have existing rules with a functioning network right now. Why would those of us who want to keep those rules have to go anywhere or do anything? That doesn't make any sense.

My understanding is that Hal Finney suggested implementing the 1MB blocksize to prevent bloat in the short term. Satoshi agreed. Many daily transfers then would now be considered dust. 2MB is the next logical step since it does not seem that maintaining 1MB was ever the intention.

Much of trading takes place on places with even less regulation than your average Bitcoin exchange. The SEC doesn't care about centralised development, just the trading. And that's probably a convenient umbrella for all the other stuff they don't like or understand.

We want Segwit and LN so that most of transactions don't end in the distributed blockchain.

Segwit+LN is a real scalable solution. Increasing the block size is the bandaid.

Allegedly, they sold miners (like S9) to Joe Public with a feature under discussion turned OFF, but they turned it ON for themselves.
At least this is one of the suppositions, and a proof of the pudding is in the fact that they produce abnormally high number of empty blocks, which is predicted to happen if they activate the feature.

I don't really care which upgrade goes through as long as it goes smoothly (though I would really like to see Lightning Network go through) but seeing Litecoin double in price due to the likelihood of Segwit going through makes me want to see the same thing happen to bitcoin's price.
