Morning wall pic. (I almost couldn't find the "reply" button because it wasn't all squished over onto the side like in the last thread Smiley

Wall at $90 is being devoured.

And down! Surely there will be a correction soon, but I could see $100 being hit today easily.

Is that done manually?

There was a post of Reddit that showed they could handle about 40 trades per second.

Bid wall up at $90, looks like it's stabilized (for now).

Yep, confidence is restored, rally continues.

So when I said we could hit $100 today, I meant in the next 12 hours, not in the next 30 minutes  Shocked

Ok, not quite ready to hit $100. Back down we go.

Anyone willing to give a quick explanation on all of the elements that are presented in the chart from BTC Charts?

The green lines are the price, the higher up the further back in time.

The orange lines are the open bids (people who want to buy Bitcoins with USD), the blue lines are asks (people who want to sell Bitcoins for USD).

The bars on the left are the volume of trades, green being buys and red being sells. With the black part being half-half.

The lines (boxes) on the right are the trades that took place in the last hour.

Sure, big walls can be pulled, but how much does it matter? The $1M wall at $70 now has $4.5M (and rising) of support in front of it. It's not like the current price is being held up by one person.

True

A lot of that is ephemeral too though. People are changing their orders all the time. Once things start moving, you can't count on much. The only way to judge support really is to watch how the price moves.

But combined with the bid sum being back on track I think those are strong indicators for buying pressure.

(Although we have a healthier ask sum this time so hopefully the rise will be more gradual)

A small wall just before $98 just disappeared. In both directions, the market depth is basically meaningless.

Individual walls are meaningless, but the total sum is a very good indicator of ... something.

So that's what drawing triangles on charts can tell you? That the price is going either up or down. Interesting.

It usually means the volume is about to pick up, and when the volume picks up it usually causes the price to change quickly in one direction.

If you could properly gage market confidence I guess most of the time you could predict the direction. I'm just posting triangles for fun though, I'm not actually trying to trade based on them, my bot is handling that  Cool

It never ceases to amaze me. Why would people sell big amounts of coin in the low 150's when the price was 168 hours ago?

Something to do with 'this new trading thing'. Meaning, theres many new entrants who have just discovered trading, small and large size alike.
Doing what you describe is exactly what they do.

I feel sorry for all the people that sold at $50 and bought back at $165. They must be tearing their hair out right now wondering what to do.

According to the mtgox walls, 23 Million USD takes us to a BTC valuation over $1000.  Not a lot of money in the whole scheme of things.

You should know that means nothing.

FACT: according to the order book, someone willing to cash out just 18 Million USD takes us to a BTC valuation in the low single digits. Not a lot of money in the whole scheme of things.

Imagine satoshi decides to cash out the 1MBTC he has, because is time for him to retire. Yes, you know what would happen: BTC would suddenly go to 0. And that will happen, sooner or later, because nobody can wait to be rich forever. Just pray that the market depth will be 10,000 times bigger than now, so we just go to low double digits when he decides to sell, and not straight to 0.
If he is smart enough to invent bitcoins, he is smart enough to sell responsibly. I believe.

Well, I would be more confortable if he would have moved some coins, gradually. He never moved A SINGLE COIN according to the blockchain. Not even at the peak of 2011 bubble, not even at $200 BTC/USD.

I wonder if he didn't just die. That would explain why he suddenly thrust Gavin to the front of the project, maybe he was diagnosed with un-treatable cancer and knew his time was limited. It would also explain the sudden and total lack of communications, and the lack of wallet activity. Maybe he was caught unawares with the speed of the progression and wasn't able to transfer his passwords to someone he trusted.

It makes about as much sense as any of the other theories anyway.

I think a weekly chart lumps a lot of different movements together during a time when the whole thing changes every days or three.

On the short-term, I like chopsticks and am bored so I drew some on the 3 hour chart:

What will we scoop from the bowl, beef or bear steak?

I can draw too! Are Friday afternoons ever interesting? If anything is going to happen today I would guess it will in the next hour.

I don't feel comfortable telling that I can go short such a big amount, since that would lead to one of the following conclusions in the reader's mind, neither of which I want to express:

- I am more bearish on bitcoins than I say
- I am a playa who shorts a significant amount of bitcoins at will
- I have quite a number of bitcoins.

So just please, forget it. Since goat wanted to come public, it is OK. I bought from him, and I hope to get the wire out tomorrow. I am paying the 2.65M THB upfront, he will not need to send a single bitcoin to me before he's got the money.

I just put lots of bids from $75 down to $10. Whatever the bottom is I'll catch a good chunk of it.

what is the best strategy for doing this?

There probably isn't one, I just picked the "lowest it could ever go" as my bottom then put some exponentially equidistant bids in from $10.00 -> $11.00 -> $12.10 -> ... -> $67.27 -> $74.11, with constant dollar amounts.

$10 is probably too low, I might adjust it to $15 or $30. Dunno.

Prices on btcchina.com have been constantly 10% higher than MtGox before the crash from 266.

Same with the Canadian exchange, it has been 10-20% higher than Gox for the past 3-4 months. It's just easier for locals to move money into their local exchanges. But anyone can move BTC into Gox with ease and they're less likely to run off with the BTC (or accidentally lose it).

Can you describe your graphs?

The green lines are the price, the higher up the further back in time.

The orange lines are the open bids (people who want to buy Bitcoins with USD), the blue lines are asks (people who want to sell Bitcoins for USD).

The bars on the left are the volume of trades, green being buys and red being sells. With the black part being half-half.

The lines (boxes) on the right are the trades that took place in the last 60 seconds.

I really hope this upward breakout didn't come as a huge surprise to anybody. I understand that there is still a lot of - justified - reservation about the question if the post-bubble correction is really over, and users like evolve and slipperyslope certainly like to remind us of that reservation on a daily basis (no offense. I appreciate the posts of you guys), but any serious look at the recent order book totals, the money flow of the past 6 days, or the sentiment on this forum ("I'm gonna buy *so hard* once price hits 90") should have convinced you that, at least short term, the only way was up. What will happen in a longer time frame, next weeks/months, is another question.

I concur. The absolute deluge of good news over the past week didn't hurt either.

Meanwhile, during the entire $12 run-up on gox, the other exchanges have risen no more than $4. There has basically been no participation since $136. Volume's are low too. What is going on?

Google trends image. What exactly is fueling this rally? This tells me it's old money doing the same all over.

It's similar to the $15 -> $30 run-up last time, just consistent and plentiful good news causing people with an existing interest in Bitcoin to buy in (possibly who learned about it in the last bubble but didn't buy). The media frenzy didn't start at full throttle until we busted through the all-time high.

there is this huge wall at 210 when it could be placed at 205 and still be top bid.

why pay +5$ if you don't have too...

If he makes it a market order the slippage will raise the price past $220. Looks like he's impatient, by putting the price "higher than it should be" he's encouraging impulse sells. I know I'm tempted...

Expect large drop (correction) before we hit 266.

I wonder about that, I do agree that you are probably right, but for the Chinese and the new money arriving this week, 266 isn't a psychological barrier at all, 300 is much more so. Also, on what exchange do we consider the 266 to be 'valid'?

During the last bubble Virtex was consistently $10 ahead of Gox (and that was when we had parity). Any idea why it's falling behind this time? I would have expected the opposite with all the ATM news.

Mine has nothing to do with newly minted coins, I don't even mine, been waiting since last night.
It doesn't matter what you do with your bitcoins.

All the bitcoins that get deposited into Mt Gox get dumped into a single pile.

Some of the coins are dumped in there by miners, whose coins can not be spent until 100 blocks after they were mined.

Some of the coins are only spendable if a Mt Gox employee grabs the private key out of safe or something.

The software Mt Gox uses to choose which coins to spend when customers want to withdraw bitcoins is apparently suboptimal.

If their software tries to spend a coin which has not matured (>100 blocks since being mined), the entire transaction ends up in limbo.

Another possible problem is that some transactions end up with too many inputs with an insufficient fee the transaction also ends up in limbo.

If a withdrawal transaction fails, Mt Gox has to double spend those inputs before trying the withdrawal again because otherwise there's a possibility the original transaction will suddenly get mined and they will irrevocably pay out twice.

How do the miners get the coins onto Gox in the first place if they can't be spent??

Not CoinBase the company, or whatever it is..

He means miners are using their Gox deposit address to receive mining rewards as part of the generation TX in a new block. (25 new coins in existence)

While coins sent which existed before require 6 confirmations, newly minted coins sent in this fashion require 120 confirms before they are spendable.

Ok, thanks.

btcchina's order book looks primed for a move one way or another.

i think its either going to go up or down

We'll yeah, but the point is that most of the western books look like they're in a holding pattern with nobody willing to provide any depth near the spot price.  BTCChina, on the other hand, has healthy depth building on the bids side.  That doesn't really tell you where things will go, but it is, I think, and indication that at the very least there should be significant movement one way or the other soon.  Sellers could look at it as a chance to liquidate significant amounts without much slippage, which would probably push the price downward.  Buyers might look at is as building competition for bitcoins, which could induce a healthy round of buying if somebody decides to break ranks and buy into the sell orders.  So there you go.

Wow, you're right, lots of consolidation from the first time we were here.

New money still uses Gox because it has historically been the most reliable and trustworthy exchange. Big money gives zero fucks about Goxbucks, they just want fresh and juicy coins.

You could be right, but considering that other exchanges are not moving, and there is a large overhang of goxbux from people who cashed out last week, I think the action in Gox is mainly their money transfer. Gox is higher than China atm!

More consolidation ahead...

China isn't moving because the Chinese are asleep. Stamp isn't moving because it was already ahead of itself after that huge fiat dump last week (after the bank software was down for a few days).

Stamp will fall behind Gox again, and China will catch up this evening.

Probably  Wink

So say BTC becomes THE global/national currency. For shits and giggles, what do you think that would put the price at? Additionally, those who hold over 1kBTC (which is a solid handful) would have such an influence on our economies. I don't want to discredit anyone who was an early adopter of bitcoin...but if the above was to come true, wouldnt you be worried about the power some of these people hold?

I think overall the new Bitcoin rich will be better than the existing rich, but I'm positively terrified that with all the nutjob libertarian types that congregate around Bitcoin, that we'll end up with the Koch Brothers 2.0.

First backtest it on last two months so you won't be surprised later...

Don't worry it doesn't do anything fancy, it just slowly sells off a fixed percent of a set amount of my Bitcoins as the price rises (and buys them back lower if the price drops, making small amounts off of volatility). It's sort of my version of the aforementioned "exit strategy"/"rake".

China isn't moving because the Chinese are asleep.

China is down -5.7% over 3 days.

Also the arbitrage is closed, which means that west will have to raise the price to $1,000 by themselves.

We are also more than 2x ahead of the long-term trend, which is a very extended position.

Bid/ask charts are quite tilted towards the latter. Especially noteworthy is the lack of bids $700+

Volume is low.

When I first heard about Bitcoin, the price was $1.30 ish. I was recommended not to buy because "it was a bubble and would come down soon", so I invested in some mining gear (right before the run-up to $30 and the huge spike in difficulty). I kept buying small amounts before and after the spike to $30, and kept buying through the next year as it dropped to $2. I wish I'd had access to the sums of money some of you guys had when you bought into Bitcoin. But I guess I can't complain at all, my original modest investment has netted me 400x returns and I'm well enough positioned if Bitcoin truly does succeed.

What an incredible journey so far, and so much more to come.

Google Trends confirms your thought that the media frenzy is higher than $100 - and I think in a few days we'll see a better representation of the relative scope, since they wouldn't have all of the numbers for today yet, much less the rest of today.

Remind me of the 'bad news/uncertainty' again?  I think I'm doing OK keeping up with the news but I must either be missing something or filtering out what others are calling bad news.  China just clarified matters, Greenspan ... well, bless, imagine my surprise, he can't see beyond 'intrinsic value', we have another economist trapped in the economists' paradigm, and fresh calls for 'bubble', 'tulips'.  What am I missing please?

Chinese companies are removing their Bitcoin payment options because of the new ruling. Bitstamp is behaving weirdly with their deposits/withdrawals. The one day MACD just crossed.

None of this matters even a hoot in the long-term of course.

May I ask wtf happened all of a sudden ?! I was chillin' after work, playing with my kid all day and then - bam!
I'd like to know what exactly triggered this. Are the US buying in big, or is this driven from somewhere else ?

Lots of people who sold below $900 were waiting to buy back in sub-$500. They're buying back in now, and some of them are whales.

Already I see something quite worrying... the current speaker from law enforcement panel, speaks the same language as the "chair" they are used to speaking to each other in the manner they are doing, using the same readily understood
language and concepts that the legal and regulatory system both understand, yesterday the chair seemed to have trouble accepting some of the concepts and language of crypto currency.. this could mean that the message today is received loud and clear, whilst yesterdays message not so.

Hopfully it will even out a little, will have to see how the Q&A goes...

Yeah, they're getting very chummy. No conflict of interest here!

Question: "So yesterday people mentioned bringing exchanges to the US, to both create jobs and improve the economy of the US and New York state. And with balanced regulation that would also allow us better control over dollar to Bitcoin oversight and weed out bad exchanges, reducing the ways for bad actors to acquire Bitcoins?"

Answer: *crickets*

What a bunch of morons. They're just going to end up pushing all the Bitcoin exchanges out of the country permanently. Good luck regulating them then!

200 usd spread nearly at the stamp gox canyon, the panic is intense Cheesy. This must be tense for those with low faith in the protocol. I just remain patient and let the devs and exchange address any issues they face.

Once Stamp and Gox resume withdrawals the price is going to go insane.

Everybody is waiting for *anything* coming straight from MK or Gox at this point, but in our desperation for information we shouldn't run to any old garbage for speculation. Both the BS "leak" and slightly over-conspicuous redundant HTML comment are insufficient to form any solid hypothesis. None of it makes sense right now.

Exactly, there's just no information at all out there. I'm totally confused right now, why the hell don't they release a statement already, ugh.

Is the bear market coming to an end finally ?

For BTC, probably not. But it seems that LTC is tearing itself away from depending on BTC's price, so I'll probably gamble there.
BTC is too bloated for available pumps to create a strong enough momentum, and it's too untrustworthy for bigger pumps to enter the game. I see that LTC will be the more suitable game to play for the time being. Smaller market cap. means more movement and the name hasn't been tainted with scandals that raise serious trust issues. This makes it interesting.

I'd say Doge is a much better bet than LTC long-term, in a few months and some more halvenings the selling pressure from the multi-pools will drop off. It's also a lot more fun!
