it'll bounce back, there's no reason for the drop - people are just dumping and buying back in for extra coin, don't be one of their victims!

as someone who sold at 72 and watching the price climb up it is ruining my evening and driving me nuts.

after doing that a couple of times, I've realised I should hold most my btc and do this with only a small amount where I don't feel compelled to buy back in at a loss in fear of missing the boat - I can just wait for it to drop back, no matter how long it takes, if it doesn't drop - not a big deal.

I'm of the opinion this downtrend is simply manipulation so whales can scoop up thousands of cheap coins and replenish their inventory. Sells have come to kill every rally attempt since 90s, while BTC had equivalently little/no trading volume when it was 110-135, but continued to be pushed up by periodic large buys.

yea, unfortunately being a high risk investment - those with their eyes on the price but not the news might think there's a reason to bail and do so without investigating, just makes it too easy for the scumbags.

maybe it has something to do with:

The outgoing Homeland Security Secretary has a warning for her successor: A massive and “serious” cyber attack on the U.S. homeland is coming, and a natural disaster — the likes of which the nation has never seen — is also likely on its way.

http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2013/08/outgoing-dhs-secretary-janet-napolitano-warns-of-serious-cyber-attackunprecedented-natural-disaster/

the cyber attack may be a way to shift blame from the banksters when they pull the pin on the economy - a good time for that would be after the US launches a couple of missiles on Syria.

It's not just some random woman, it's the DHS - just because they call it a natural disaster doesn't mean that's what it really is, it could be referring to the salt domes collapsing after BP drilled into them - it could be anything really.

If new purchases are triggered by old purchases, the doubling time depends on bank's speed. In April it was wire to Gox, which took several days, now it is transfers to btcchina, which is instant.

wires into Gox take around 2 weeks at the moment.

Most of that order book volume is looking for cheap coins anyways. There certainly has not been much depth near the ask.

I was comparing the top rows on clark moody, grouping by $5-10 and watching the top rows - it was a lot higher on the buyers side til we dropped to like $900.

I dunno, I guess when there's rapid movement in either direction people just buy and sell at market so they don't miss the boat.

I am here to try and gain perspective into why people think that bitcoin is such a solid investment. In the real world there is no such thing as guaranteed returns, yet so many people here are applauding every time a man sticks his entire retirement fund into bitcoin or a kid who has been saving up for college hears about how bitcoin can double his money in a week decides it would be a good idea to put in all into bitcoin. You welcome these vulnerable naive people with open arms. It is you sir who is deplorable.

you're a dick, everyone knows bitcoin is volatile and most enter with only what they are willing to lose - there is mention of weak hands being played here, I don't think there are that many - more like greedy hands and greedier hands, selling on the way down with the intention to buy back in but I guess we'll see within a couple of days.

you also talk about the top 50 owning 30%, I don't know if that's true but in the fiat world the top 1% own 41%, the top 10% own 86% and we know they are for the most part, evil mother fuckers so bitcoins distribution is still a definite improvement.

50 people owning 30% of wealth is equivalent of owning 0.6% of wealth each.
This is over 100,000 times worse than the society we live in today!

This can not and will not happen.

That does sound worse but I made the mistake of quoting mainstream sources - you'll never see the real wealth in Forbes top 100 like the Rothschilds trillions, and we all know they are freaking crooks.

Get money from bitcoin and help people in poorer countries.  if bitcoin gets to $155,000 then i'll go and live in philippinnes and help build a few houses and find love (though i am going there to find love next month there on a minimal budget, think that i am eating mainly beans and mashed potato nearly everyday to make sure i save for 6 months ahead of time)  I'm very good at keeping food costs down and i don't go out every weekend (haven't been out at night for a year or more)  I tend to do things that cost little but maximum enjoyment.  Travelling and making friends is my enjoyment and usually are in less rich countries (financially).

you don't find love in the philippines, you find hoards of woman wanting to marry any wrinkly old westerner to better their life.

guess you shouldn't generalise but my Uncle married one, she was obsessed with $ and left him cos his investments didn't turn out well.. other filipinas at work kept trying to hook people up to get their friends and relatives into australia - one old guy bought in, practically got married before they met.. it's quite blatant but I suppose marriages of convenience work for some.

With listening to some people here I panic sold so many times. With a loss of 4 BTC´s. And now I panic sold again because people here were writing it is the end, adam was even crying. So I sold all at the bottom. Looks like its better to move the coins to a wallet and forget the forum here.

yeah this forum helps in finding out what news may have affected the price but you can't rush a decision because of what a couple of people say, there will always be people at the extremes or just talking shit.

CEC Australia (a minor political party) reported bails are set to be implemented before the next G20 meeting which is Nov 2014.  There's documentation on it somewhere at cecaust.com.au

While I'm on the phone for hours with "personal bankers" who are supposed to be there for you 24/7, and still can't get a wire into any exchange in a timely fashion. This is my money, and my clients money, we should be able to move it wherever we want. We're talking 10s of millions, not some small transfer where they'll screw around with you for calling late at night.

yea it took 13 days for my wire to get into Gox, the price went from around $200 to $1000 in the meantime.

Agreed 100%

people hodling is what boosted the price and gave bitcoin media attention bringing in more adopters and services, it doesn't really matter what the price is for anyone that wants to use it to purchase things or to make international transfers.  eventually though it'll reach a price where many hodlers will sell, it'll become more distributed and price will stabilise, then vendors who were scared of the volatility and hadn't heard of services such as bitpay come on board.

I really doubt these coins would be sent to gox and then sold off in a huge A-Bomb. The US government may be inept at many things but they would be smart enough to get a good price for their coins. The worst outcome would be they become property of the NSA/CIA/FBI/FED.

Most of the forum posters here, being from the US or EU don't realize it because they don't see it. It is extremely difficult to buy coins in volume from 3rd world countries.

If you're a South American today, you cannot hook your bank to any exchange. You cannot get market prices. There is no way to acquire ""fair"" value BTC other than LocalBitcoins or the such. None.

Only people with access to foreign bank acc's can. The rest buy p2p or with CC's in dodgy sites, and always at 15-25% markup.

it's not just the 3rd world countries though, people in most countries are paying 5-10% premium because of the international transfers involved, Australia to Gox for eg. is like 5% + $90 USD.

Even the donations has been taxed. I wonder if it's still the same scene if the donations was sent in bitcoin instead. We don't have any taxation laws for intangible goods yet.

I think the odds would be better as they could be received by organisers in the destination country instead of some western middleman scam charity.

I'm thinking the acceptance of bitcoin by porn.com maybe bigger than expected - I mean most would probably want their purchases to be discreet so could create a lot of transactions compared to other merchants.

I really don't understand the complaints about market manipulation. Price artificially low? buy. Price will always return to fair market value eventually.

like gold and silver?  would love to see that hit fair market value, though I think we need ETF's to drive btc price to see the same level of manipulation.

Ok, a US senator coming with that kind of support for Bitcoin, on behalf of Homeland Security and other federal agencies like FBI and IRS makes it pretty clear that Bitcoin has the official seal of approval of the US administration. I got kinda suspicious after the senate hearings, and this cements my suspicions that the US is somehow involved in this. No way in hell would they approve of something like Bitcoin if it wasn't part of some sinister way to profit or control.

It could be quite different if the FBI hadn't picked up so much bitcoin.

yeah, the newbs need to stop going around finding news to justify price movements. market forces are generally much more powerful on the mid-term scale anyway. what we're seeing is a healthy mid-term correction to a very large bulltrap. this shouldn't be news to anyone, although i know many didn't believe it when it was mentioned on the way up.

whether news should impact the price or not doesn't matter when so many are watching out for it as a means to pick up more coin.

also to ignore the news means you have no doubt as to the long term prospects of btc, a lot of people don't share that sentiment yet so like to be prepared to bail.

I don't think it is helpful to think in such terms as the US dollar will fail, bitcoin/gold will win. End of the world scenarios don't happen often and are not a great investment strategy IMO.

no they don't happen often but if you look beyond the mainstream media you'll know it's on its way.. actually it's long overdue, only the QE, low interest rates and market manipulation is keeping the economy going now, they may try keep it propped up for a while longer but it's not entirely in their hands, foreign held reserves being offloaded may trigger collapse at any time.

I suspect most the world will be looted through privatisation, bail ins etc before we switch to a new world reserve though, really we should just say this fiat ponzi scam ends here, the debt is cancelled, bankers go to jail but unfortunately our governments are pretty much owned by banks and corporations so that aint happening without a revolution.

I've been thinking about the threat from banks - perhaps there isn't really one, I mean if you think of the banksters as individuals - if they were true beneficiaries of the current system of being able to print money out of thin air, they'd already be set for life..  most probably also work like politicians in only thinking short term and don't really care what happens down the track.

China's stance may just be a temporary as they wouldn't want any risk to the potential of becoming the or part of the next world reserve currency.

I dunno, maybe some at the top would like to see bitcoin squished but considering those at the top now would be inheritors rather than creators of this fraudulent system, perhaps they may be relieved to see the end of it - especially with all the attention its received in recent years.

Accordingly, capitalism works by exploiting people and creating an incentive for people to work.  For example, if any schmuck can get a bitcoin (or fraction of a bitcoin) when he is a baby (and then stashes it away), then he would never have to work a day in his life by the time he is 18 years old.

Maybe I am being too narrow minded to think that way, but compounding interest is a powerful thing and if BTC is guaranteed to go up every year by even as little as 10-15% (and those are conservative numbers based on the supply issue and I would think that the guaranteed price increase would be greater than 15% annually).  BTC would change the whole dynamics of the world and incentives for labor......

why do you think it's deflationary? the price is currently rising with adoption and confidence and by the time bitcoins stop being created we should be at peak adoption, there may be a bit of deflation through coin loss but by then we may also see population decrease if 3rd world countries are brought up to 1st world level where birth rates have fallen below the replacement rate.

oh and why focus on it as a currency anyway, if used in parallel to other currencies as a payment method the price and volatility don't really matter.

I may be using the wrong term... but deflationary, means exactly that the currency buys more with the passage of time compared with goods and services.  So let's say a kid is born in 2020 and his parents invest 1 bitcoin into a stored wallet.  At that point, the bitcoin is equal to the equivalence of $10,000 in today's dollars.  Even if the value of the bitcoin goes up by 15% per year (which I believe is fairly modest), then in 20 years that bitcoin would be worth about $200,000 and in 30 years, $900K.

yea that's what I was referring to as well but the total number of bitcoin users will stabilise at some point and so will the price, if deflationary at all at that point it will be a very low % which won't be incentive enough to hold as an investment.

Even if bitcoin ultmately succeeds (which I wish it will, but doubt it) and bitcoins becomes extremely valuable (which I very much doubt they will), bitcoin trading is ultimately a zero-sum game.  Any profit that one makes from it is someone else's loss.  In order for @Goat (or someone else) to buy his Lamborghini, @windjc (or someone else) must lose his house.

the price has to drop for someone to lose - if the price stabilises and doesn't drop when we reach mass adoption, nobody loses.

There are surely some extremist groups among Ukrainian protestors but you don't topple a government if you don't have support of people overall. Those extremist groups were just one part of protesting movement, whole Ukrainian people were behind it (and I mean Ukrainian people, not Ukrainian citizens who are putting Russian flags on government buildings in some prorussian areas these days, they don't give a rat about Ukraine anyway, they care about Russia only=

Surely protest were supported by USA and EU but when you give Ukrainians choice of picking West or Russians who ruled them for decades and still want to be the boss in their country, then that's not a big choice for them, they'll pick West any time.

I don't think they were a majority, but even if it was, you'd be surprised at how a bit of propaganda can steer a population,  there have been endless coups driven by outside powers, just about any that you can name in recent years have been based on lies..  Iraq, Libya, Syria, Egypt, Venezuala (2002).

a recent attempt in Guinea where 4 Israeli's arrested for plotting coup:

"According to the intelligence files dated September 13 and quoted by the French newspaper, the mercenaries aimed to provoke the Guinean police and armed forces to hurt citizens in order to incite political unrest in the West African republic ahead of the elections."

They've used this same method countless times, you should watch confessions of an economic hitman to get a better idea of how and why.

Yeah, this is not bitcoin-related, but felt I needed to post this in response to the recycled Putin/Yanukovych propaganda someone posted here.

IMHO, as a U.S. citizen of Ukrainian background (grew up in the U.S., but my first language was Ukrainian and I’ve tracked Ukrainian politics closely my entire life), this article gets much of it correct:
Everything you know about Ukraine is wrong http://pando.com/2014/02/24/everything-you-know-about-ukraine-is-wrong/

damn OS restarted from an update as I was typing.. arrgh.

anyway, that seems a balanced view but is still just one of many. since they didn't touch on the paid protesters or even question what they were seeing when protesters were shot (Israeli snipers were caught in Syria at the start of events there), it is obviously not the whole story.. being Ukrainian makes little difference, I know 90+ % of Australians, British and Americans don't know what the hell is going on in their own country, we are all subject to some form of propaganda and even if you try to research everything there will still be missing pieces.

as long as people are willing to say they don't really know what is going on there, I'm ok with it but when they react to every tidbit of biased reporting it just drives me nuts.

back on topic..

What is Bankruptcy Protection?

"Bankruptcy protection" is the process by which a debtor is "protected" by a court while they reorganize their finances.

Protected from what? Protected from excessively hasty or harassing creditor actions, such as foreclosures, repossessions, law suits, harassing telephone calls, and the like. A more accurate lay-terminology for filing for "bankruptcy protection" would be filing for "financial reorganization" or "financial restructuring" under Chapter 7 or Chapter 13.

"Sometimes, both individuals and corporations file for bankruptcy protection if they believe they can recover financially, given some time and some amount of restructuring and reorganization despite being in dire financial straits right now."

Russia has an extremely long history of autocratic rule. "Slav" literally means "slave". At least he's been a competent thug so far.

Certain groups in the West (neocons) played a a part no doubt, but that doesn't mean that Western powers as a whole were behind it. There was and is a real desire for freedom and less corruption by many Ukranian People. I think they are being naive. If I was Ukranian, I'd GTFO of that shithole, even if it was my home. I'd take as many of my family members as I could with me. Whoever ends up in charge there isn't likely to be much better than the guy they threw out.

McCain is doing his best to retroactively deserve the torture he received in Viet Nam. Neocons think that they can fix stuff when all they do is get people killed and waste money.

Obama isn't competent enough to engineer a revolution. That's his best virtue. The west has a foreign policy establishment that's just smart enough to be dangerous. They rid the world of Saddam Hussein and left the Ayatollah as the regional power in the Middle East.

The west have been in Ukraine for years and thrown 5 billion dollars at this regime change as mentioned by Nuland, sure some might not have been happy with the government but no more so than for example us in Australia with our government, the revolution in Ukraine certainly wasn't organic as we're led to believe.

I edited my earlier reply to say you should have a look at this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fWkfpGCAAuw  but you prob missed it..  Paul Craig Roberts go into detail of the strategic motives etc too in one of his interviews, not sure if it was with James Corbett or Stefan Molyneux.
