Does anybody know if the May 5th. value is accurate? It's showing up as 0.
As far as I can tell, the latest one is always 0.

Ah okay. That makes sense then. Was wondering why the searches suddenly dropped down to 0 on Google Trends...

But on that chart you can pretty clearly see that China didn't have that big of an impact. Otherwise you would see it in the searches I presume? Although I'm not sure wether Google in blocked/censored in China.
Baidu is more popular as a search engine in China.

A friend in China mentioned today there's growing curiosity about BTC there after it was featured this weekend on CCTV.  It's made it to the daily hot topic on sina weibo.  Anyone want to speculate on whether/when this might be reflected in the exchanges?

We've discussed this quite a bit since the first CCTV news.  Word is that the latest news was neutral to somewhat positive. I think we are going to see adoption in China, both as a speculative investment but also because of the world economic situation. Something we have to consider also, is that people may start to get behind it as a big FU to the USD. That is probably why the government has been pretty open to it.

I imagine that over the next 6 months to a year that China will be the biggest holders of BTC. Just on population alone, it only takes a few thousand wealthy people to make that happen. Just a feeling of a guess.

As the price of BTC goes up, we either need to go to another term e.g. mBTC or do a split (if that is possible). With the latter no one loses holding power as with creating new shares. I just don't see people being as game to buy when the price is high. But, if it truly starts to grow and is seen as valuable, then mBTC will be the new term.

IAS

I agree.  It's psychological as much as anything.  When we start using mBTC as the standard, I would be surprised if the price didn't increase almost immediately.

If you're a nobody investor without much money, would you feel more comfortable bragging to your friends that that you bought into the BTC market for .1BTC or would you rather say I bought 10,000 mBTC?

I agree that mBTC is psychologically better. It doesn't matter if it seems silly to the scientifically minded among us. Several laymen I have spoken to have told me they feel Bitcoin is now too expensive for them to buy in.

We all know you can buy fractions, but laymen typically do not and those are the folks we are trying to bring onboard.
Yes, i experience the same issue in my social circle. A lot of people are interested in buying but they think it's to expensive. I get requests from friends to tell them when the price is low to buy back in. They do not seem to understand that Bitcoin requires an other mindset than fiat money. For example 1k bitcoins is a high amount to own, although for them i doesn't sound that much because they are used to high numbers when it comes to fiat. mBTC is the solution to this is my opinion.

[ Eventually, once the price stabilized you will get more people without any wealth what so ever buying BTC as a store of value.

People hoarding BTC will kill it.

How? If your hoard and don't spend then 1 - the price will be stable and 2- people will use the remaining BTC's, taking advantage of the 8 decimal places, for commerce. It doesn't matter how many are in "hoard mode" as long as it is being used. Those 8 decimal places are brilliant. Who knows, we may have to move it up to 11.

And realistically, if the value is high, why would anyone want to hoard it? Clearly speculators would take profits. Not to mention the early adopters selling some to help make political change and change in general.

Seeeeee the contradiction?
Please read carefully.

the way I see it is it's just a bunch of pussies who couldn't handle the psychological impact of a big sell... perhaps the big sell was in part timed to impact on said pussies.

that doesn't mean it's not going down, but what exactly is the reasoning behind it? Just because the indicators say x doesn't mean you should act out x.

+1, people who are selling now base their sell just on a f*cking graph.

but then, do you want to attract the attention of the EU?
What do you mean?

This can swing both ways, good or bad.

If you attract the attention of the EU officials (in Brussels, you cannot *not* bump into them), you put BTC on the EU map which is potentially a good thing, but you also risk exposing it to unwanted regulation, which could be a hindrance.

I'd be interested to know how things turn out in Helsinki.
Maybe a stupid question from my side, however i could not think of a answer.
How do you see Brussel ( or an other government ) regulate Bitcoin?

I actually sold some BTC during the last 3 days. We have a giant wedge, which well may break to the upside, but as well it can break to the downside, which means we will viciously crash to $50 in the final capitulation. It is easy to sell bitcoins, and there are no support levels after 88 and 79. Many latecomers are still sitting on gains. Even all of my net purchases ever are green (I never net purchased above $100 after all) and my finger is becoming itchy. I always tend to think that I represent a group of people, and that group is now on the sell side, no chance to buy as we are already all-in.

If we break to the upside, I will buy in at a loss with a predetermined schedule. I am not nearly as sure of the probability and timescale of my $300k prediction as before. However, IF crypto takes over fiat, there is still no realistic way to do it without Bitcoin reaching $300k. (Or I would still like to hear the reasoning  Grin )
What's your target price there?
I just bought in again, don't see us breaking down to low numbers this week. Maybe later.

No, at friday they close at 1300 already because they drink beer in the midday on friday's.

To me it looks like someone found a way to make a quick arbitrage between gox and bitstamp, either withdrawals are back, tux is making the arbitrage or people in japan found a cheap way to deposit in bitstamp...

When was the last time prices where so close?

▼ mtgoxUSD   121.4200   123.289   -1.516%   601774
▲ bitstampUSD   118.4900   111.759   +6.023%   361690

I heard people saying they found a way to open a Jap bank for faster withdrawals out of Gox

I guess its possible

Wait wait wait... guys... Bitstamp is at $118 and Mt.Gox is at $122... could it be... that Mt.Gox solved the withdrawal problem? Is this the elimination of the spread we've all been waiting for? Maybe this crash on Mt.Gox is... super duper bullish?!

i wouldn't say that its  super duper bullish, withdrawals being back means people will feel more safe selling, but it would be good news nonetheless.

end result would probably be no more spread between exchanges
And people feeling more safe sending funds to mt.gox. Would you send funds to an exhange if you couldn't withtdraw them?

I don't know if you were already involved in Bitcoin back then? I think i remember a post of you saying you were fairly new some months ago. lol.

Maybe he's waiting for the crash.

Well if that was his goal, he's an idiot. Because his bidwalls prevented a crash... now theyre gone and the bids are much healthier without him.

I agree entirely.

Nobody in their right mind would sell another 5000-10000 BTC right now - they need to wait for the bids to fill in first.

I believe I said it earlier but he who dumps first wins. That 10k dump earlier was a real winner !

Yeah, but most bought in below 120 in june/july. I expected a bigger dump. But I agree, better wait till it calms down and moves up a bit and then do another round.

Makes sense, slowly letting the buyers buy up until the big whales is in the profit zone, then dump.
He who holds the longest wins. There are no signs of a ending uptrend.

Whales are selling slowly and constantly putting medium walls (1k-3k) on bitstamp, little fish are buying the current hype and may bleed later on..
As for Gox its an abandoned house.

I propose a better terminology for grouping the different kind of market actors. Or please tell me, what are the behavioral characteristics of the whales, as opposed to smaller fish?

As far as I know, big holders don't sell.
Agreed, most big holders won't sell they are true believers in this system. Although i do think some youngsters maybe selling now, the computertechies in their early twenties who discovered Bitcoin and mined some coins. They have enough now to buy nice things and improve their life quality. That is a difference with the investors who bought in during the March/April rally, they already have money of course.

My question is, why don't we see new whales coming up yet? Or do we have to be more patient?

I think they will show up, but i'm curious why it takes them so long.

http://www.thuisbezorgd.nl/ accepts Bitcoins. This is a website where you can order food from different restaurants. They process the payments between the customer and the restaurant. This website is very big in the Netherlands and thus well known.

Why? I tend to forget them as 'dollars' and instead just bitcoin purchasing tokens. Coming to terms with the fact that they cannot be withdrawn and are thus just to be used to buy when the price is low and trade when oppertunity arises. It's nothing to feel sorry for anyone about. It's actually a good time to have some Gox-Tokens to be fair.
If they managed to buy in lower they did good of course. But i bet the majority is still waiting for sub 500 coins. What are they going to do with that money? Wait a few months till it arrives at their bank accounts or buy back in at a loss? I bet the last one.

I can't believe I sold all just under 500! I was so happy to have over a half million $ that I couldn't wait. Oh well, I guess all I can do is sit in my new completely paid off house and cry. lol

You sold all? Really?

IMO at current BTC valutation selling "for good" (to cash in fiat profits) more than 35% of ones BTC stash is completely crazy, regardless of when you bought in.

If you bought in low double digits/single digits, then your profits are SO HUGE that selling only 20% will grant you a massive gain, while you still keep bullets for the "next round".

If you bought just a few weeks/months ago, then selling 20% is probably enough to recover your full investment, while you keep riding the BTC trading.

In any case, selling all seems like something you will bitterly regret in the near future. I guess you dig in the forums and read the stories of those who sold tens of k's of coins in 2011 (if not hundreds of thousands of coins), bought a nice house and a nice car and retired from the BTC scene for good. Just 2 years after those guys would be so wealthy that their kids and the kids of their kids would be all set for life.

Yep - it might not happen. But its the kind of opportunity you just cannot afford to lose Wink

I already kind of regret it but I mined for most of my coin so long ago and this is such a giant windfall that it's hard to not be happy.
Of course you kind of regret it. Bitcoins were a part of your life for so long and now you are detached from them. On the sideline. Just enjoy your wealth now and maybe buy some back to get involved again. But man you deserve it.

All people calling bitcoin a tulip craze don't realize that one of the main differences between both phenomenons is that the tulip craze was not supported by a worldwide digital platform called the internet. I mean the internet seems to be causing a qualitative effect on several phenomenons once they reach a quantitative peak thanks to the ease of interaction the internet provides. Look at the Arab spring, what seemed like a regular discontent or protest that wouldn't achieve much managed to topple whole governments. In my opinion this day and age we are witnessing very nice examples on how quantitative changes lead to qualitative ones thanks to the internet. So trying to predict what will happen to bitcoin using a phenomenon which happened centuries ago without having something like the internet to support it is not very accurate IMO.
Don't overcomplicate things. Tulips are useless.

Tulips are not useless, they might not be a good currency but they can be a store of value, nobody has control over your Tulips but you
You might want to read up again on the Tulip mania. Tulips have more resembling with art then with gold and silver, and thus their price behavior. Tulips are infinite remember?

Big money wants in, don't be fooled by the big fish who patiently waits for cheaper coins.

This is no 2011, the stakes are much higher this time.

lots of coins were bought... but it means nothing still...there have bene small lifts off since Friday into Monday no after burn though.

I will agree there was a lot of volume in that quick window.. but if its new money.. and this doesn't cause lift off.. imagine those weak hands.. with 850 coins Cheesy

After reading that catastrophic 750k inheritance disaster story on reddit,..where not only did he get raped on the initial asset sale.. he then goes and buys at 850.. sells at 500 or something.. either way lost about 75k in a trade.

These kind of people see bitcoin and go herp derp I'll triple my money.. and then they try to day trade like there financial super stars.
That's just a minority. I think the majority is smart enough to do proper research first and then buy and hold.

212. Post 3722258 (copy this link) (by Ivanhoe) (scraped on 2020-04-04_Sat_11.29h):

Gox people are afraid price isn't going lower like they hoped, so they have to buy back in like they are doing now. The majority didn't sell because they wanted cash, they sold because the rise was to fast and they thought they could buy back in lower. Before we see new money coming in the next weeks. Stamp people actually can cash out, so there is more resistance, that's why their price is lower and rises slower. This is the exchange to watch in my opinion. China still spooked, because they had a bigger correction and some minor bearish news ( CCTV ). They will catch up when they see new ATH's on american exchanges.

I see the boom and bust cycles been shorter and more contained.
Yup, big money is waiting for good entry points. They might find some after this crash.

The crisis was imaginary. What happened in China was actually good news.

not going to argue if it was or wasn't. The important thing is that the market saw it as bad.

The crash has almost nothing to do with the "quasi"-ban on bitcoins and everything to do with new ID verification requirements by BTCChina.

Same old story. An exchange attracts money launderers and price manipulators. Then requires ID verification. The criminals flee to another exchange.

My guess is someone will set up the new btcchina in India soon.
I would believe that, except that it doesn't make sense for somebody who doesn't want to get caught in ID verification to dump less-traceable bitcoins on BTCChina for more-traceable CNY.

That scenario would have played out like the Mt Gox withdrawal problems this summer, where traders with trapped fiat would buy bitcoins, withdraw them to another exchange, and sell there.

dumb money dumped, smart money moved

Not relevant. The ban had nothing to do with the price drop. BTCChina's new ID verification requirements, on the other hand, have everything to do with the drop.

The price manipulators and launderers need to find a new exchange.

One thing bitcoin needs badly right now is a leveraged trading market with real capital. Bitfinex and Icbit are useless to us because a single margin deposit is likely to exceed their available funds.

That's probably something being built as we speak. When big money enters the game, specially Wall Street one, they'll require that kind of trading as they are used to it.
Those things are being build as we speak. Don't worry guys lots and lots of cool projects lining up, i can assure you that. The recovery gives us plenty of time to work on this. Bitcoin is far from dead, maybe just temporary for speculators Grin

I wish it was a simple crash though, those are not making people to scream "Bitcoin is dead" like it is now the case.

Why? The crashes that make people scream "Bitcoin is dead" are the best crashes. More people screams "Bitcoin is dead", the bigger is the buying opportunity.

I hope the US follows China and "ban" bitcoin soon. I'm one of those who thinks that its pretty much unavoidable at some point, and in fact I'm surprised that it hasn't happened yet.

This game is played in the long run. Anxious to be a multi-millionaire? Then probably you will sell too soon. Ask yourself if you are into this only for the fiat profits - if the answer is yes probably you are into a game that is too risky. If the answer is no, the ban on Bitcoin is just a step needed for it to demonstrate that it is really the resilient, de-centralized currency that will change the world.

If you have been in the game for a few months, I hope you already secured some profits by selling a few coins at a rationally-decided target. If you just entered the game, just hold - we will see where we are in a couple of years.

Grabbing popcorn. Sending fiat to exchanges. Enjoy, gents.

Well, I wouldn't like US to ban Bitcoin tbh.

I'm too old to think about changing the world tbh, that's like 15 years ago, I'm here about making the money and that would be shit.

I'm "too old" for many things, but not for wishing the world to change: I have kids, and I'd prefer them to live in a better world.

A lot of people seem to forget that BTC was designed by Satoshi Nakomato to disrupt factual powers and to challenge the people that actually rule the world - the bankers.

He knew that the probability of BTC being banned/attacked was HUGE, and that's why he took so many precautions to remain anonymous. A lot of wanna-be traders seem to forget that and just get excited with their unrealized fiat profits while they day-dream about the Ferrari they will buy next year. Probably Satoshi is laughing at that, while is without any doubt a good thing for BTC viral adoption - there's no better fuel than greed to move human beings.

Of course if BTC finally succeeds there is also a substantial economic reward by being an "early adopter". But this is a dangerous game. If you are not prepared to see BTC banned, BTC holders prosecuted, and/or BTC eventually going to 0 then you don't really understand what BTC is and you probably made a huge mistake investing your time and money in it.

+1, are we forgetting the purpose of bitcoin in the first place people? Ok, no sports cars in the short-term for you guys. Time to work on cool projects and make bitcoin succeed.

Bitcoin is not safe (not 100%)  Grin
It's easier to steal bitcoins than fiat money in a bank account technically.

Bitcoin wallets only have 1 factor authentification (password), a few are even unecrypted. All it needs is a keylogger and the average joe will lose all his bitcoin holdings.
Nerds store them complete offline, but that doesn't help joe. He just don't have the skills to do it (or knows it's necessary).

Bitcoin wallets clearly need 2 factor authentification. Online wallets don't count, they are not safe!
With bitcoin it depends on your own security. So you decide how secure it is, not someone else. That's what's important is in this case. As we speak those things are being built. I heard armory received a fair amount of money from investors for example. Give those projects some time and i'm sure bitcoin will be accessible for Joe also.

Hi Guys!

I am currently trying to invest about a couple of bucks in Bitcoin, and have been reading up on all kinds of predictions and advice (dreams even) over the last couple of days to get an idea of how to do this.

I am not putting in more $ than I am prepared to lose, but considering it is still quite a bit of money to me (though it may be peanuts to some of you guys) I want to make an informed and rational plan and not buy at an ath this time. I know that when I start looking at trade charts and the news constantly I will only behave like the herd and lose coins instead of gaining (holding) them.

My guess is the price will go down some in the near future and, in the case of some more bad news from china or something, maybe even dip quite low. After that I presume it will rise again to new records. Since I'm buying I want to buy as low as possible of course, but I do not want to risk missing the boat completely before the price rises again.

So I came up with these orders on Bitstamp (lets say I want to invest a thousand bucks):

at $521/BTC buy .333BTC for $173.49
at $357/BTC buy .333BTC for $118.88
at $303/BTC buy .750BTC for $227.25
at $273/BTC buy 1.76BTC for $480.38

Comments are highly appreciated.
Too much effort for too little money. Although it's good that you actually made a plan. If i were you i just placed a bid slightly below the current price. Put the coins in a cold storage and then wait and hodl.

Not if 1 mBTC is precisely 1 dollar. Because 0 is nothing it doesn't need a digit, no need to put it like 1,000 or something.

I don't know, really. What else do you have, other than TA?

I mean, fundamentals are subject to interpretation as well. There is no "objective" way to look at news/fundamentals... the market reaction to the Silk Road bust is a perfect example for that.

My point is, TA is just as useful or not useful as it always is.

Perhaps what you have in mind is better phrased as: "don't cling to *outdated* assumptions from TA".

I remember one of the mantras being repeated after the April peak/crash was that "price has to deflate back all the way" (which was either ~15 USD = price at beginning of the rally or ~30 USD = previous ATH). In reality, final capitulation was at ~60 USD, off by a factor of 2.

* * *

The current situation still fits into my own expectations... we went up pretty nicely over the last weeks, and with some extra force in the last few days, and I still consider it a real possibility that we're seeing an early end to the post-December peak bear market. On the other hand, we have what could be a (spread out) double top at 1070/1090, and there's also a real chance we're still going to go down much further.

I'm not tempted to re-adjust my position quite yet. If we go through 890-900 (mtgox) *with force*, and close below it, I'm starting to get worried. Well, not really, but I would consider the "continued bear market" scenario more likely again.

Yes indeed, this is what i meant.

So guys beware, the landscape is changing really fast now. Please keep this in mind with the decisions you make and adopt to them. I hate to see early adopters left behind.

Is this the bottom or we just stopping to let some ppl off before we continue down? The charts indicate still going down, am I reading that right?

I think it depends on the upcoming news, so far it has more of a "silkroad closed" vibe than a "china bans bitcoin" vibe

I'm famaliar with what happened after the China news (that helped me to increase my coin) but not with what happened after the silkroad situation.
Can I ask what happened?
People panic sold after they heard Silkroad closed down. It resulted in a flashcrash, which showed heavy support. In my opinion one of the triggers for the november rally.

This is just the 'chinese ebay' who forbids the trade of bitcoins on their site. Something what we all expected already, nothing serious in my opinion. I don't think the price will go very low just based on this news.

"One forum member, using the name 'Bitcoinlitcoinbtcltc' said that after 31 January, "Chinese can no longer do anything related to bitcoins. They can not withdraw money from Chinese exchanges. So the bitcoins they have on Chinese exchanges are 'dead'. They can not trade those bitcoins in for real money, or withdraw that money. It's like that money doesn't exist anymore."

This doomsday scenario was echoed by another used called 'Proudhon', who has contributed to the forum for three years. The user said bitcoin's fall from $1,200 to its current level of around $900 will "continue until bitcoins are worth $0."

Much of Proudhon's comments from "confirmed sources" have been dismissed by other forum users, but the sense of unknowing shared across the community is hard to ignore.

The bitcoin protocol is working fine gentleman. Just some bug in wallet software which causes this: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Transaction_Malleability. There is already a technical implementation for this and it is implemented now. That's why BTC-E and Bitstamp are updating their wallets.

edit: Gox did fuck up more than other exchanges because their coding was old, therefore the chances of transaction malleability happening at gox was higher.

Amazing, a double spend was detected and stopped. I jizzed my pants  Shocked

as you can clearly see the bitcoin network is working just fine, despite what some would have you believe

the problem lies in the custom built wallet software exchanges implemented.

attacker(s) are, unsuccessfully, trying to fool these exchange into thinking tx are not occurring when they really are

bitcoin dev are working to resolve this problem by working with exchanges, miners, and also thinking about possible protocol updates to completely remove all possibility of future attacks.

now look back and see who has been spreading FUD, and click ignore.

Ok we have seen the reaction on the rumor that Mt.Gox enables withdrawals now.  This confirms my thoughts that we will see a bit of a "silkroadcrash affect" when they actually really succeed to resume withdrawals. The price will violently shoot up then. This will be the start sign of a new rally to new highs. If however Mt.gox doesn't succeed in fixing their problems, we will have a slow slide down on the exchanges to maybe the 300 - 400 area.

Although, I still think Bitcoin is extremely undervalued, but I try to avoid talking about the exchange rate (I'm biased). A fucking messaging app sold for $19 billion... I know it's apples and oranges, but Bitcoin provides far, far more utility than a messaging app.

Like that comparison. Hadn't thought of that one.
Quote

The more I think about it, the more interesting it becomes (in my mind).

Bitcoin can be seen as free speech, from the right perspective. Transactions are shouted to the world, and the world decides to write them in stone. If you want to stop bitcoin, you are infringing on the freedom of speech. (I can no longer share this information with the network.) Every thing is open and available for the world to audit. The servers are decentralized.

Now this messaging app is also a form of speech, but it's proprietary. There is nothing free about it. The source is closed. The servers are centralized. (I'm making some assumptions here, I didn't bother to do any research. If I'm wrong, my bad.)

WTF is wrong with the world when this messaging app is worth billions of dollars? Fuck it, Bitcoin will probably fail because people are ignorant assholes! Wink

Because they are being held dumb by their governments, our task is to teach them.

So the question is how many people are gonna wake up and see their limit orders filled and want to cash out vs. how many are gonna turn bullish?

A whale dumb enough to give away $150,000 is not going to buy back in lower, but may buy in higher in a few weeks.
Indeed, if we look at the charts and events there is enough reason the be bullish now. 530 tested 3 times in the past and did hold. A 10k dump didn't cause a panic in the market and price is almost recovered. NeoBee launched today ( very big news ). China trading 20 dollar higher again with decent volume.

Incorrect.  He said, "I am no longer involved with that".

What we don't know is exactly what Nancy Grace asked him.  She wants readers to think she asked him about Bitcoin, but she does not say explicitly in the article exactly what she asked him.  When she posts the exact question she asked him, and she knows what it is, then that can be discussed.  Until then, his quote in Nancy Grace's fiction piece has nothing to do with Bitcoin.

Dorian said in the AP article, "I was referring to engineering."

I believe Dorian, not Nancy Grace.

I don't think permabulls are rare here. Just not a lot for us to say during Panic/Capitulation/Despondancy trade cycles. I could post reassuring messages and long term outlooks here all day, that might persuade some people to hold, but really, I'd rather get to the bottom as quick as possible. It's going to happen either way. I expect maximum pain to come before market turns around, and I really haven't felt that yet. I can't really put a $ price on what that would be, but there's no shortage of effort being applied to find out. Perhaps busting below that 400 wall on stamp would do it.

I suspect that moment is approaching, as the "news" is being recycled constantly, and FUDsters are preying on these fears, in tandem with large market dumps that no longer make sense. If you held until now, there's probably more risk in dumping than holding unless dumping for market manipulation purposes. Let the dumps commence, and let the panic spread. It's the best cure for a BTC hangover.

well, I dont think so, and wait when wall street joins, we will see about this volatility and the trading opportunities, complaining much about market manipulation and insider trading ? wallstreet will show you waht is the real of that, they will fuck us all the way up and down, we will all learn just to hold if we are lucky  Cheesy

They are talking about a peak of $6000.

That would mean the market cap would need to move from 5.5 billion to + 75 Billion.   Who is going to fund this ?  Because I'm not and I doubt the whole bitcoin community "all in" could fund 75 billion.

So where does the new investment come from ?

13 times it's current price, needs 13 times as much money.  Who is going to fund your dream before you dump your nice 13 x profit?

EDIT:  im not talking at you specifically, but at the people in this link you sent.

That is thanks to scarcity...

Today there are only 19900 Bitcoins for sale at Bitstamp, Gox and their Bitcoins are gone, and we have a LOT of Hodlers.

Thanks to holders (believers) there is a great scarcity, i think the next bullrun can be epic, you don't need lots of billions for a great market cap. you only need a very low supply, and holders Wink

and as soon as the price rises the demand falls.
No, the price rises because the demand rises.

Diretta canale satellitare della Camera dei deputati:

Can you write a summary for the non italians?

I'll try.  It's like 3 hours long. I missed it live, so I'll report back when I'm done watching it.

It starts out with explaining what bitcoin, the blockchain, mining, wallets, altcoins, open source, supply and demand, decentralized, the usual gold analogy, the usual negatives (silk road, volatility, and such), and etc.

One of the speakers talked a lot about volatility in price, and it sound like he is setting up a website to discuss possible solutions for addressing it.

The next speaker did a pretty good job of comparing the beginnings of the internet to bitcoin.  He discusses email and message passing, along with cryptography and the inability to counterfeit bitcoins.  So, of course, the next speaker talks about mining, mining pools, double spend, and the 51% attack.

One of the speakers urged that in Italy the less they try to regulate the better it will be.  He suggested that there will probably be regulation from other sources like the EU in general, and that Italy should not need to add anything.  To counter this someone that is running an exchange said this is music to his ears, but he still would like some guidance on how to handle KYC/AML in Italy.

It looks like this is "just gathering evidence for consideration of the government concerning future legislation," like JayJuanGee had guessed.  Overall, it sounds very positive to me.  The conversations are more like "bitcoin is comming, lets embrace it and see how the EU in general decides to regulate it."  I have the same warm and fuzzy feeling I had at the end of the senate hearings in 2013.

(It looks like whoever created the stream forgot to stop it, so it's just streaming garbage from the station that it was broadcast from and you can't rewind it.  Hopefully, someone will post a proper edit of it.)

TL;DR: It's basically the same as the senate hearings in 2013, but in Italy.  To be honest, I'm not sure what function the "Camera dei Deputati" plays in the Italian government though.
Grazie mille!

It boggles my mind that the trend is like this with the sheer amount of new and large business that have adopted bitcoin lately.
Most of those businesses did not adopt bitcoin at all.  They merely agreed to accept dollars from the sale of bitcoins that people already had, including cheap coins that had been dormant since 2013 or earlier.

Bitpay expansion does little to increase adoption; it chiefly makes it easier and more tempting for long-time investors to sell some of their coins on the open market.

Nobody with enough money to buy a block of 3,000 coins is going to bid over the top of the current value on major exchanges. The bitcoin market has been so anemic for months now that all we're going to see are a few low ball offers, and whoever wins will take the lot for a very nice discount. Face it guys, we all want to see a rally, and it will likely happen eventually, but smart money isn't going to dive in on something that is so uncertain in the near term.
Of course they are going to bid above market price.
1) You can't see what the others bid, so you have to make your bid count.
2) Do you think the names we saw on the leaked list or going to register on sites like Bitstamp? No these people buy off exchange.
3) Even if they would buy on Bitstamp buying 3 000 BTC would cost them 1.8 million dollar and this would push the price to 596 and leaving a serious gap behind them in the bid side on the order book. If they would bid at 580 this will cost them only 3000 x 580 = 1.74 million dollar.

That would be true if their goal was "I MUST GET THOSE COINS".  But the goal of people who play that game is "I MUST PROFIT".  They figure out what is the price that would give them the best expected profit, and bid for that. If someone else bids higher, they would think "what a fool".

Thanks for cutting my post into half, don't do that again. I guess you agree with point 2 and 3. Your argument against point 1 is weak since i think their mindset is indeed 'i must get those coins'.

Pretty well...

so like i said 1am UK time we will hit 377 +/-5 Smiley

2 more spikes, and by the time China is eating corn flakes, we'll be close to 377.

but don't hold me to exactly 1am.  might be a few hours late.

you keep saying the same thing over and all over again, suppose you hit $377, then what ? why is $377 important to you ? what would this change?

it is $377, it is not like we are going to hit $600 or $800, I am pretty sure that even if you hit that (377) mark (which I really still doubt) this wouldn't change shit, because you always go $10 north and $20-30 south, and trade side ways till the next crash....

I still think that Bictoin Price is a bubble that will burst to pre-bubble price ($100-150), after that we will have a slow and boring growth.

Imo the chances of a slow and boring growth are really small. The market it too thin with too many players watching it, therefore it grows in hype cycles. Every big price increase will lead to fomo.

Seriously...your using a telephone as an ease of utilization example?

Really bad example, phones started as a giant peace with no real need for technical understanding, you had to pick up and press a button and ask the operator to connect you with the person who you want to call which happened to be a person's name instead of a number... then technology evolved while we were using phones, they add something each time... and now we end up with the smart mobiles that operates as computers....it surely didn't happen over night but it took many decades to get here.
Mainstream use of phone started like that yes.... phone technology did not. There was lots of work in infrastructure first, what we now see in bitcoinland. I'm sure with bitcoin it won't take many decades, don"t you think?

Allright, Bitcoin is more useful than the telephone.  And the people who got the first phones, the early adopter visionaries, all got filthy rich.
You are either really bad at analogies or really good at creating false analogies.

You realize that the original analogy is contrived gibberish too, right?  Bitcoin is a Goldbergian contrivance, at best a cludgy solution to a problem existing only in the minds of a few batty libers.

The network effect?  Sure, but how does it factor in?  Can it help us evaluate the soundness of buying and hodling Bitcoin?  Would the resulting model be verifiable/falsifiable?

If network effect was the dominant factor here, it should be reflected in Bitcoin price.  It isn't--the price has been plummeting for close to a year now.  Intentional avoidance of inconvenient evidence like this is typical of libber thinking:  Latch on to a simple-to-grasp, intuitive analogy, and ignore all IRL data which contradicts it.

Again, the network effect is a concept--it's used to illustrate why things happen after they happen.  As a model it has no predictive power, it can't tell you that shit will/will not happen.  More sophistry and illusion--commit it then to the flames Angry

It does reflect in the price, just look at long-term graphs. Short-term there are other things factored in like market psychology.

The network effect:

These lines are moving averages that are incorrectly shifted to the right. If you want to look at crossings, they should be put in the graph at the proper place in time.

I mean, its just a pattern I recognized. I admit I'm no day trader, but it doesn't take a pro to see some patterns and trends forming.

What do you mean they are incorrectly shifted to the right? How do I properly place it in the graph on bitcoinwisdom?  Thanks a lot.

Starting to get worried we're set for a dump to take us below 240. It's eerily quiet on here, just a hunch but I sense a dump. People might have been waiting for the pump from the other day to continue. It hasn't so we've begun a little dump, I think people who look for small profits might sell now unfortunately.

Bid support has grown tremendously so it would have to be a pretty big dump, and sell volume is running low as usual this late in the bear market. Very risky for whales to attempt this if only to manipulate. Profit-taking is generally not enough to push things down when the market is ready to move up.

At the outset of larger uptrends you'll see a resistance to lower prices and low volume on the dips as some longs take profits and retail/gamblers load up on shorts. As a trader, I might take profits here (haven't yet) but would get long at the next dip if the price continues to firm up around $250. In that case many longs who rode the first leg will watch the bull flag complete on 12h/daily chart and jump back in.

I think we either go sideways this weekend or see a pump start sometime before Monday to mark the price up for people waiting for deposits to clear at exchanges. If we do see higher prices next week watch out because many of the whales are finally turning bullish, removing sell orders and attracting volume back into the market. The ask side of Finex is quite scary if a big pump takes off. Scary in a good way as there's little to stand in the way of higher prices, and it might run to the top of the trading range ($280-300) very quickly.

What is your speculation about next week, bassclef ?

Will we say higher prices, what do you think in general ?

Obviously bullish. I think we test the 200 day MA again to see if it breaks. I think it might, easily. That means end of bull market to a lot of technicians although many of us watching closely have already sensed this. So $270-280 is a decent target for next reaccumlation zone.

I might have fallen and hit my head, but what do you mean here?
i think it's a typo and he means "bear market".

"Study finds internet trolls suffer from personality disorder traits"

"A research paper completed by Erin Buckels of the University of Manitoba with the help of  two colleagues looked at how Internet trolls stack up against the Dark Tetrad.

The Dark Tetrad encompasses Machiavellianism, a willingness to manipulate and deceive others, narcissism, which is egotism and self-obsession, and psychopathy the lack of remorse and empathy and sadism,  the pleasure in the suffering of others.

"Overall, strong positive associations emerged among online commenting frequency, trolling enjoyment, and troll identity, pointing to a common construct underlying the measures," according to the paper's abstract

Ah, that explains the giant 5k buy on Bitfinex that sent the price up everywhere else. This happens every so often when you get someone doing massive gambles on leverage. It's surprising that people risk having such big sums of money on that exchange now that there are reports of negative account balances and orders not getting filled.

Lots of traders are looking for a new home. https://www.reddit.com/r/BitcoinMarkets/ is a good place to keep track of their gripes. There are certainly no shortage of them.

Once someone comes up with an exchange with all the bells and whistles that actually works and has the necessary liquidity they'll clean up.
