If you look at Poloniex basically every Altcoin is losing at the moment. Everyone is pumping their money into Bitcoin.

Would be interesting to see how much bitcoin gains in overall market value (was recently at ~60%)

There are too many ATHs. After waiting for so long since 2013, it started becoming an everyday occurrence, thus boring. $50-$100 movements and some *psychological levels* are interesting.

The last 10 floor to floor Bitcoin doublings since Nov 2012.

Average doubling time: 6 months
Shortest doubling time: 1 month ($20 to $40)
Longest doubling time: 18 months ($80 to $160)

The Mt Gox bubble is clearly disruptive to trend. Since recovery, doubling times have only accelerated. This kind of hyperbolic growth is typical of a technological singularity. Think color tv, mobile phones, or the Internet.

At this scale, it's really hard to see the recent hardfork or China FUD having much of an impact at all.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2203360.0

This feels very f'-ing fancy! Smiley .. Also.. I don't know if you know this.. But your chart predicts 10500$+ în 3-4 months. Cheesy Cheesy

Let's project! If we assume an average doubling rate of 6 months, then the price floor should remain above:

$5120: Jan 2018
$10,240: July 2018
$20,480: Jan 2019
$40,960: July 2019
$81,920: Jan 2020

We may touch $10,000 in 3 or 4 months as an ATH, but it may take another couple months to form a new floor. I wouldn't be surprised if doubling rates slowed down to maybe a year+ after $10,000, though. It's mind-boggling and eye-watering to conceive it's even possible. Shocked But this long-term doubling trend has so far survived all kinds of FUD, hacks, and Bitcoin obituaries and only appears to be gaining resilience as adoption increases.

It's funny, I just can't see it doubling into this heights so soon.

But then again .. I didn't think we would reach 4000 (or even scratch 5000) 3-4 months ago.

everybody is now crazy about ripple. They missed the train with bitcoin and now are buying ripple, eth, etc, but surprisingly bitcoin price is still holding very well Smiley .

This is exactly the same that happened a few months ago (march? may?) when Bitcoin price stalled and alts were pumped big time. In the end, most of those profits returned to Bitcoin, alts stalled, and... here we are again.

It's the logical step.

Wait for your altcoin to pump and pump and when you are satisfied return to the "gold-standard" and buy bitcoin to get out your profits to a (more or less) safe place.

Bitcoin's price rises and the altcoins fall again.

And at the moment MANY altcoins are pumped!

I see we had another massive correction all the way down to where we were on Saturday... currently $17868USD/$23010CAD (Bitcoinaverage).

Meanwhile altcoins are up so our old coins are worth $20515USD/$26413CAD each (Coinmarketcap).

At 13300 someone sold 700 BTC on bitfinex down to 12768. Sells like this are highly suspicious and quite often in the last 2 weeks. I am convinced that the xrp company is behind the last attack just like Ver and sockpuppets did before that. This was prepared months ago by gathering hundred of thousands BTC, then sell each time it starts rising. In the meantime they buy of their own offers (mostly) to continue the pump. Fortunately, BTC has only several millions coins in circulation, so this manipulation can't continue longer than few weeks. Hodlers know this and won't fall for their satanic rituals  Grin

Thats actually a good point.

Noone in their right mind would sell these many coins at 13300 when the price has been 14k+ several times in the last 2 weeks.

I have just blown the princely sum of 0.01 BTC on a test run of Raiblocks which I am told is the future of crypto.

So far:

1.  Every time I try to open the Raiwallet I have to recover from seed because Raiwallet throws an error.

2. I can’t withdraw my 1 Raiblock worth US$25 from Bitgrail because their node keeps crashing so I can’t send it to my Raiwallet.

3.  You can’t send any amount less than 1 Raiblock to Bitgrail as an anti-spam measure.  This is for a DAG technology that supposedly can handle 2,500 tps?!

4. I can’t withdraw my remaining 0.0082 BTC from Bitgrail for no reason whatsoever? Exit scam?

This is the 17th highest ranked crypto on Coinmarket cap and it seems to be a fucking mess.  If this is the future of crypto, I want no part in it.

Basically all of these Altcoins are completely useless.

I bought some NEM yesterday with coffee money. Doubled since yesterday.

Did I ever hear of NEM before or know what it is / does .... no.

This is all just a huge pump/dump/FOMO action and I really hope it does crash soon and flows back into Bitcoin. Hell it could even flow into Bitcoin Cash ... At least they have some real world use.

Its not when the entire cryptomarket cap has more than doubled in that time. Going sideways is not up.

I'm sure it will go up again, but the alts taking market share like this is pretty shocking, you have to admit that. I certainly didn't predict it.

That's the problem.

Everyone is pumping money into crypto but none of this is flowing into bitcoin.

This is a situation which has not happened before and I am not sure if Bitcoin will gain momentum again.

I've probably mentioned this here before, but back in the day I mined a triple digit amount of BTC and sold them at a price in the double digits.

Later on, after deciding not to jump off the nearest tall structure, I decided to start grinding away and hodling.

The smart move going forward is probably to sell certain amounts at predetermined levels, similar to what jbreher does. However, I have a major aversion to the thought of selling any BTC, having been traumatized by earlier experiences.

If you have some kind of a goal (Buying a car, buying an Apartment, building a home, ...), just set a goal BTC price for yourself where you have to sell 10% / 25% / 50% of your BTC in order to reach it and keep the rest.

I never understood the need for a HW wallet anyway. Is it that hard to write down your private keys? Or memorize your 12/24 word seed?

If you just want to hodl for years a paper wallet is OK.

But if you want to move your Bitcoins sometimes this is a real pain in the a**

HW also prevent against trojans where your address generator (from seed) creates an public address and the trojan changes that. The public address shown on your HW will never be false.

The difference between Mt.Gox and Bitfinex is that, at that time, bitcoin had few use cases, and few exchanges, whereas now, is much more widespread, with lots of use cases and exchanges (there are even people using it to buy cars and houses).

So a Bitfinex scandal would not affect the price as much as Mt.Gox did.

Its not about bitfinex, its about tether. Count the number of exchanges with real! USD support - Coinbase, Bitstamp, Gemini and Kraken - thats it.
Now imagine "the market" realizes that there are 2.2Billion worthless "USD" in the system, which where used to pump up the price from 1k$ to 20k$.
Somebody will be the bagholder for those 2.2Billion.

Hmm, wouldn't everyone want to sell their Tethers and buy every coin they can with it and pump prices up even more?

Same for those selling at 3000, 4000, 5000, 7000, 9000, etc - always giving bitfinex serious profits, while people were exchanging their btcs for vapor-tokens, and these BTC now can cover multiple times the USDT balance. Right?

If I understand your post correctly, you are making a mistake.

1. Total Tether issuance (USDT on OMNI + USDT on ETH) = ~2.3 billion $
2. Total BTC in Bitfinex cold-wallet = 140,443 BTC = ~1.63 billion $

I think this assumption is false because

1) Tether is not only used by Bitfinex but spread through multiple exchanges. You you would have to count every cold storage (or see how much Tether is at Bitfinex vs. BTC at Bitfinex)
2) You are assuming every Cent of Tether is fraudulent.

The strange part about all this is that the possibility to continue to another ATH is still not completely off the chart and could fit the previous pattern..

What would the timeframe for an ATH be though?

Maybe at the next Halving in 2020.

We went below 10,5k again. Anyone thinking this will change anytime soon is purely speculating and trying to get others to buy.

You're focusing too much on the red candles and you're missing the fact the whales are in fact absorbing bitcoins with hundreds of millions of $ in buy walls. Once the cab drivers, hair-dressers, ico scammers and your grandma unload all their bags, it's brutal reverse time. I've seen this type of panic on Bitstamp early 2015. The game is the same, it's just that you have more cannon fodder this time

Well ok, but with buy walls they are continously tanking the price.

Shouldn't they have an interest in moving the price up so all their previously bought BTCs are worth more?

Massive pump now... it would be super nice if the price doubles in a couple of weeks (or more).

Otherwise, it would be also interesting if it fluctuates between 6k and 12k, just to buy more in this interesting time fragment.

The pump should go on until 11k-12k is reached.

This is within the Trendline for 2017 before the huge FOMO to 19k.

Then we can slowly rise again as we did in 2017

I think we can get used to this.

I suspect that all the rise above 10k was due to the mass media promoting the reach near and above 10k heavily at this time, so lots of new money was flowing in.

This was a 1-time scenario.

I am not saying that Bitcoin will never rise again, but don't promote something like 25k/50k by the end of the year. There is just no base for that. We can be glad if we say above 10k and in the 10k-12k corridor.

For me this also was kind of the last straw. I don't think we will crack 12k in the next years.

Maybe before/around the next halving.

We tried several times now and it failed every time before the 12k mark. People now know it doesn't reach 12k and so many are selling before => also "helping" 12k cannot be reached.

I will hold my Bitcoins but I am not expecting anything in 2018/2019.

It does look suspicious when the marked goes up slightly for days and than looses all he gained in 15 minutes because of a huge dump ...

That being said => We are doing this over and over again and the cycles doesn't seem to stop ... and this is the big problem now.

It seems that everybody is forgetting that thousands new holders are entering each day, while the supply is increasing very slowly, and that the next halvening is coming soon. I am sorry for your illness, but it seems you are still obsessed by losing-it-all nightmares.

But is supply really increasing slowly ?

We get 144 blocks per day = 1800 Bitcoins

That`s 18 Million USD (based on 10k) new money is needed every day just to hold the price steady.

 Undecided

Nope, we will probably find a bottom somewhere but I don't know how low it will go.

The problem is that we are slowly going down for weeks now.

This is no flash-crash with a correction a few days after as usual, its a continous down-trend.

You mean the market has to trade 1,5k BTC to break the 8.5k threshold today?

I'm looking at the charts all day long waiting to see if it breaks the 8.3k mark. There has been a 8.296 peak at Binance a few minutes ago, also.

What I also like is that buywalls are forming

1300 BTC need to be sold to move back to 8,5k
2100 BTC need to be sold to move back to 8,0k

Halfening is 2020 - and there may be a bit of a delay in the upwards BTC price pressures that come from the halfening dynamics....

So probably better for folks to have plans of HODL their BTC (and accumulate) at least until the end of 2020 and perhaps into 2021 - of course, halfening pump of BTC price could get priced into bitcoin before the actual halfening date (which will likely be early 2020), so that early pump might be a factor to watch.

Furthermore, looking at your seemingly linear chart (your cute straight line), even though retrospectively you might be able to draw a straight line in terms of bitcoin price movement, it is not really easy to project a straight-line for future BTC price performance... so in that regard, actual BTC price performance can go way below the line or way above the line, even while the line might be amongst the most reasonable of floor scenarios (BTC does not tend to be reasonable).

How much did the price increase during the last halvenings?

I never understood why there is resistance? I dont get it, can somebody explain? 10k will break. Why are people building walls to hold it sub 10k as long as possible?

I never understood this too why people are selling during a bull run.

But the thing is

1) There are people who set a goal. "I bought at XX and will sell everything when it reaches 10.000"
2) Their are traders who sell and hope to crash the price by a few % and then buy back so they ultimately have more BTC
3) Wales make up sell walls (the 200 / 300 / 400 BTC walls you see) to keep the price below a certain level so they can buy all their BTC below a certain price. Once they are done they mostly lift their sell wall.

There are probably more reasons :-)

Hope the next halving in 2020 can save us

Well we "pumped" all the way to yesterday evening when we were at 6,1k ... ;-)

Holy Shit ... Bitcoin difficulty is projected to increase by ~24% in 6 days ...

OK, the culprit is the decrease of BCH because miners switched over to mine BTC instead.

But I believe that the point where mining costs are higher than the BTC value must be here (or nearly here)

The whole Tether issue is only an "issue" if they are created out of thin air.

If every Tether is backed up by an US Dollar then they can pump Bitcoin all they want (and have the right to do so)

Are miners still making profit?

The break even point must almost be exceeded ...

What are you trying to say, exactly?

I understand that I should not be egging on a beartard (PM pumper) to explain, but perhaps there is an outside chance that you have something substantially meaningful to say?

By the way, you understand that mining profitability remains considerably variable, and there is considerable speculation in mining too, so some miners are going to be ready, willing and able to operate at a loss for a considerable amount of time.. in other words there time horizons regarding profitability can be quite drug out.

Furthermore, you understand that there can be gamesmanship with mining too, especially if there could be opportunities that the directing of mining can be used as a means to pump the bcash attack vector, and the calculations regarding timing of attacks might be short windows and momentum based, too.

What I am trying to say is that miners will not mine unless they are profitable.

So either they will switch off some miners so the hashrate goes down (which I see as unlikely)

Or the price will follow the increasing hashrate (e.g. miners stop selling their BTC for a period of time to reduce BTC supply on the market) which should result in a higher BTC price.

I just find it an interesting topic :-)
