The best strategy for most with BTC is to buy in with the maximum you feel comfortable investing and then hold until your personal predetermined sell thresholds arrive or something fundamentally changes altering the long term potential of the technology.

For those with insufficient liquid capital like me the second best strategy is to set a goal number of BTC you want to own and purchase them gradually and regularly every month.

I have been making small purchases every month since $256 and every BTC I have purchased is well in the green including the ones I bought yesterday.

If the price drops dramatically like it did yesterday I shrug my shoulders and make my monthly buy a few weeks early. Trying to trade with leverage is foolishly risky when one considers exchange risk. Trying to move in and out in response to market fluctuations is a zero sum game and should be considered only by professional traders.

Yep, one problem is that even if there is a bunch of hashrate unless it is well decentralised there are risks that a 51% of the hashrate can be owned and an attack carried out.

Ie: BITMAIN would be a great candidate for a hacking attack. Anyway, I think the impact would be mitigated by some sort of rollback/hardfork if something really obvious happened against the will and rules of the majority.

The cost of a "legit" hashrate attack is increasing greatly. That is a good thing. It also has an impact on price and price has an impact on hashrate (the recent price increase is in part responsible of the increase in hashrate).

The reason that it's gone past us so fast is because it's an arbitrary comparison.  You could only compare based on how many ounces of gold there are.  If you look at any measure which actually makes sense, Bitcoin's price is completely insignificant compared to that of gold.

I think a pull back is definitely going to happen if it isn't already. I definitely didn't expect us to steamroll all the way up to $2900.  Massive runs are always super exciting but the faster the run up, the less sustainable it always seems to be. I hope I'm wrong though!

better to buy as the price goes down and sell as the price goes up, but don't buy or sell too much in order that you do not run out of either bitcoins (on the way up) or fiat (on the way down).

So in that regard, if you only have bitcoins because you used all your fiat to buy at a price that is higher than the current price, then you just have to wait it out for however much time it takes to return to you purchase price level, even if it takes a year or two.  

In the meantime, if BTC prices continue to go down, which surely is possible, just continue to buy $10 per week (or whatever reasonable amount is in your budget), and sooner or later, you continue to bring down your average cost per BTC and you will be back in the the game and be able to sell some of your bitcoins either below $2600 or above $2600 (but as long as you are selling as the price goes up and buying as the price goes down, you should be good), and whenever BTC returns to that $2600 level (whether this week or a few years from now), you will be fully back... and hopefully learned some lessons along the way...hahahahaha  

Actually, I think this plan is pretty good. On the other hand, If you really made 1 btc today this means that you sold 100 btc at the top and then buyed again at the bottom (-1% tops with reduced trading fees). But what if the bitcoin surprised you and raised by 5-10%? Then you will lose bigger profit in fiat than all possible gains in the 1%-daily trading.

However, if you have been in the game for 6 months, then you have had a run up from $890 to $2980.

Of course, if you just got in, then you may have had some troubles accumulating in the sub$1k price arena.

I attempt to carefully monitor my fiat levels - and I understand what you mean to be running out of fiat, yet I think that we still should be prepared for less likely scenarios - and even returning to sub $1k prices is not out of the realm of possibilities.  I will admit that I will likely start to have to scramble a bit at $1500 and surely the level of scrambling would be higher if we go sub $1k.

By no means am I a bear, and I have been accumulating more and more bitcoin in preparation for up - but I still think that it remains prudent to accumulate enough fiat (and maintain enough fiat) for a certain level of outrageous and irrational down.

Surely, a lot of us might be mentally kicking ourselves if prices were to go down to sub $1k - yet even though I feel some of that kind of remorse, I still stick to my practice of largely buying on the way down and selling on the way up.. and the only times I make an exception to that practice is when I have a real high level of certainty (like 80% or 90%) of price direction of at least a 10% change.. which certainty seems to be as rare for me as naturally occurring snowballs in the tropics.

Yeah.  I had read that Bitfinex statement about lenders.   Maybe it is just me, but I remain a bit unclear regarding how bitfinex treats borrowers of BTC?  They are paying back only BTC, and the lenders get the BCH from the transaction? That seems a bit strange;  however, maybe it is possible that Bitfinex considers that borrowers are more in control of their loans (as compared with lenders) because borrowers can chose to close the position; however, lenders cannot close a position, once it is taken - although they can choose to discontinue offering loans or cancel the loans before someone takes the loan... so yeah, lenders are locked in and borrowers are not..

So, if bitfinex is going to treat the matter of only crediting the lender, then borrowers should have a decent sized incentive to close all of their loans before the hardfork or otherwise they will likely lose any value that any BCC might have, if any.. hahahaha

My more layman's consideration of the matter, it seems to me that it would be most fair (even though a bit more complicated to calculate) to cause splitting (and credit) of BTC/BCH on both sides of the loan - whether we are talking about bitfinex or poloniex - however, the poloniex matter of crediting only the borrower seems to be worse situation and causing extremely disproportionate interest rates for borrowing BTC on their platform.

I did have a theory on something that could push the price up a lot over time.

There was something like 600k bitcoins stolen from MtGox which apparently was flowing through btc-e being sold off over the years. btc-e has always had a lower price which may have kept the price low over the years. Now that the admins are on the run and they do not have btc-e to sell their coins they have stopped that flow of large amounts of bitcoins onto the market. Without this downward pressure, who knows how high the price will go.

I don't think that there is a blanket right or wrong answer... but the most fair thing would seem to be to recognize a split on both sides of the loan - unless it is clearly announced ahead of time what are the conditions of the loan.  If one side has an ability to get out of the loan early but the other side does not, then it would not be good to trap the side that cannot get out of the loan with the adverse consequences, and I think that was why bitfinex came out with an approach that differs from Poloniex.

Doesn't it feel sort of odd hoping the price goes up _and_ the price goes down? I'd be too conflicted.

I don't mean to be too critical nor pedantic with my earlier posts; however, ultimately, you need to play with the strategy (sell on the way up and buy on the way down) in order to get comfortable with the level of increments and the quantity of coins, and I made a lot of mistakes in the beginning too.. when I sometimes got emotional and sometimes deviated from the plan.. but it does work if you figure out a kind of small enough level of increments and you are really only selling and trading profits, rather than principle.

Furthermore, when I began, I was buying/selling in very small increments, but as the price goes up, my increments go up... so currently my increments are like $100.. you have much bigger increments than me, and I think that you gotta stack first and play for a while with smaller increments to build your stack on both sides before you start moving to BIG ASS increments... but whatever, you play with it and figure out a variation that works for you and your situation and without stressing yourself out about it.

I have been employing such a strategy (sell on the way up and buy on the way down) since $250.. so I surely have sold a whole hell-of-a-lot of coins at prices in which the price never came back down to those levels, and I still have considerably more coins now than when I started  and my average cost per coin is down and while largely using only profits to buy back.

I have several people asking me about Bitcoin, especially knowing I am retiring because of it. One guy at work who obviously hates his job sees it as a way for him to retire too so he asks how to get into it, then sighs when he realizes that he would have to wait. Sort of depressing every time I talk to him. They just want to get rich quick, I know he doesn't care about Bitcoin and I would rather not help but I will for the sake of being cordial.

Most people that are overseas I remind them that Bitcoin is a cheaper way of dealing with money than the way they are currently getting their money (going to the ATM to get dollars, taking those dollars to the overpriced exchange to change it to Won). I also ask them if they ever buy anything on Amazon, and tell them that they can save 15% on all of their Amazon purchases with Bitcoin (everyone out here buys a lot on Amazon, one guy had over $60k spending history in the past few years). I try not to encourage the "get rich quick" folks even though that's most people. After the early phase of "we need Bitcoin regulations" (so the price will go up) people seeping into the community I know better than telling just anyone about it.

Though when they ask me when is the right time to buy I say any time is the right time to buy. I tell them about an order I had in when the price was $230...I got greedy and put my buy order in at $225...it never reached that price again and I had to eventually jump in at $600 to get my money off of the exchange.

In my experience people are hopeless. What can you do?

The theory which is more popular among ethologists and anthropologists is that when agriculture sets in, there is literal and metaphorical fence-building: My land, my harvest, my woman. Don't touch or I'll kill you. Besides, not only the "landlord"'s role (male head of family), but also the female's, becomes harder to replace if it's just the basic couple, rather than the whole village, who must work the crops and the house.

So the poetic image that goes along with this theory is that agriculture is the "loss of innocence" landmark for mankind. The pre-agricultural state can then be mythically transfigured into a lost paradise.

My personal experience, while not significant statistically, reinforces this myth. I used to have a business in a distant part of the world. There, I befriended many people that have a nomadic (pre-agricultural) history and were forced into "civilization" only a few generations ago. They are different, indeed. The women react very differently. The men react quite differently. The sense of possession is much weaker indeed. The sense of impermanence is palpable. I like that general feeling very much. Of course, with the Internet and globalization reaching every "civilized" human, the dominant mentality quickly takes over. Things are changing fast and even trace amounts of that innocent paradise are being lost and will vanish soon.

My hoard passed the "Fuck You" money-level a few months back and since then I've been really starting to question a lot of things about life. "Why am I not enjoying life when I have more than I could responsibly spend in my lifetime ? I'm completely debt free, Thank God."

Going to hold out for three more stock vesting cycles and then make a decision late in the summer about retiring a year earlier than planned.

At the end of the day, I still do enjoy the work I do, find it mostly gratifying, and still am learning quite a bit in my old age. It's... ((( them ))) that make things unenjoyable and aggravating with social politics in my work environment.

It's all about perspective I guess.

Luckily someone who owed me money, and just in time too. I may be paper rich now but I'm still pocket poor.

I'm still recovering from buying the dips in September and a couple of weeks ago.

I'm basically retired, so my main activities are sex and herbs and rock and roll. I do a lot of partying, still play regularly with several bands and attend baseball games during season. I spend a lot of time at the bar. I also like spending time in the forest or at the lake. I'm thinking of "buying" a few acres of jungle in the Yucatan on Mayan land. I can do it with Bitcoin, no fiat involved.

I collect a couple of pensions and make a little extra here and there from various businesses, hustles and scams. I jump on bargains and sell them for a profit. By far my main source of income is Bitcoin but all my profits stay in Bitcoin (for now). I used to mine.

I've bounced between poverty and semi-wealth all my life. Now I've achieved a certain level of stability thanks to Bitcoin. I'm proud to say I haven't had a "real" job since 1976. Getting paid for a hobby doesn't count. I've learned to resist unnecessary spending and live cheaply.

As I said, life is good.

I had the same thing happen to me when we jumped up to $1200. Puts a whole new perspective on life. Even now.

You go through your whole life with the idea that you have to work to make money, you need to upgrade your skills so you can get further in your career, you plan on working the rest of your life.

Then this happens and that is all thrown out the window. At the very least you can stop working at a job you don't like and start doing things you do like.

For me I want to work on something else and I keep falling into the old way of thinking of looking at how profitable it will be. Obviously if I'm working I want to get compensated but it is not as important. But if I work at some fun job that only pays me $10-$20 per day there's really no reason to make money, may as well do voluntary work.

I have been considering doing some blockchain work like Satoshi and not going the ICO route to make big bucks...just create something that will help the world and set it out there to grow on its own.

There is one very simple answer. Segwit makes bitcoin sidechains possible. Only sidechains can solve the scaling problem. There won't be one solution for the scaling problem. There will be many sidechains. Because different people have different ideas about money. Competition between bitcoin sidechains will show us the way.

If it's gone that long without confirming now, you'll probably have to rebroadcast. Also, if you mark transactions as RBF, you have the option to bumb up fees during congestion.

BCC=BCH=ABC are the various ticker symbols and software project names for the new bcash coin.
They stupidly chose BCC even tho it was already in use (BitConnect), so everyone else changed it to BCH.
ABC was the open source project which was actually launched later as bitcoin cash (BCH) - which most people now call bcash.
