What do you mean by it isn't linked to the blog? Did you check the entries all the way from August? I'm pretty sure it's linked there, because most CMS-software automatically links blog content.

How do bulls feel if we don't break $216 here? Looking like a triple top, then, yes?

Would still feel quite bullish.. But I admit there might be a small dip before the recent positive press coverage starts affecting and new users drive the price up. But IMO it's too risky to sell at the moment even if there is a small dip.

Sorry for asking such a basic question but I'm still not sure I fully understand how to read these charts:

For example I took this order book print from Bitstamp 5 minutes ago. Doesn't it mean basically that there is a lot more depth in the bid side compared to the ask side? So isn't that a very bullish signal (more people want to buy than sell)? But I often see similar charts without very bullish comments, which makes me wonder if I'm not understanding some factor here?

Has anyone else noticed that US mainstream media has been relatively silent about bitcoin during the last few days?

I bet they are waiting for bitcoin to drop 50 dollars, so they can make another "bitcoin is crashing" news article. Those seem to be more popular news than "bitcoin is skyrocketing". Cheesy

How much do we need to go up to make major headlines everywhere? I guess we saw the answer in the "I bought bitcoins with 27 € and forgot about them, then bought a house" story that went viral.

14. Post 3585245 (copy this link) (by neutrinox) (scraped on 2020-04-04_Sat_11.23h):

Here's why we shouldn't be too worried about bitcoin being "ruined" by allowing US government to track it:

1. It will help bitcoin go mainstream and give it a better reputation among laymen
2. This means all those investing in bitcoin will become filthy rich
3. Liberals, anarchists and those who need bitcoin for criminal use will just develop an alt-coin with focus around anonymity
4. US government looses. It has made bitcoin mainstream without gaining any real benefits (because of the alts).

See, I don't mind criminals using it. It will probably be one of the biggest user's of bitcoin in the end. I suppose I could feel ethically bad for believing that, but at the end of the day it's not believers in bitcoin responsibility to police the world and how it uses currency.

I actually don't mind that either. Especially for drugs, because I think drugs shouldn't be illegal in the first place.

I'm just saying that while US regulations might seem depressing, they wont really be very effective. The cat is out of the bag and if they succeed in sweet-talking bitcoin devs to accept tracking, the next crypto with a more strict privacy outlook will be just around the corner. No matter what US gov does, people will have more freedom because of cryptocurrency.

Many people are modeling the current situation based on the April crash. That of course would make the current bounce a bull trap.

I think we need to remember that the situation is very very different at the moment. April was basically "okay, bitcoin just died" for many. This time I think pretty much everyone is confident that bitcoin is here to stay. Nobody is really scared that their bitcoins will suddenly become worthless. This wasn't the case after the April crash.

The question is not anymore "will bitcoin make it". Bitcoin has already made it. It has already become a massive success story.

If one Subway is accepting Bitcoin and Subways official twitter just posted a story about "hundreds" of people driving hours to support them for accepting Bitcoin how long do you think it will take before they all follow suit?

Yes, they will all buy a fluctuating volatile difficult to learn currency just to buy a sandwich. In the process they are prone to losing money while doing all this.

Come on people, get real. It's hilarious how everyone thinks merchant adoption is important at this point. I'd say clearing up the regulatory status, creating better (and more liquid) markets, and making bitcoin more simple for the average person to use is of what is of importance at this very moment. Not to mention the consumer side of things that needs to be worked on. Why the hell would anyone use a currency that has irrevocable transactions and no consumer protection for large transactions? Yes there are pros to using bitcoin to buy stuff, but all the above cancels those pros out.

You don't get it (or more likely, your in fiat atm).. We have one of the biggest companies in the world starting to accept bitcoins. The implications are huge. Just to give you one point, next time when someone you tell about bitcoins is skeptical if bitcoins can actually be used to by something, you can mention subway. Everyone will know that brand. This is the biggest merchant adoption so far. Reddit, wordpress and baidu are nothing compared to subway.

agreed with niothor.

This is just a reminder to those who might have forgotten or those who are new to bitcoin.

Rpietila is shouting doom and gloom all over the forum, but until the beginning of the year he was predicting a bitcoin valuation of several hundred thousand USD. That was whilst he was in a manic phase, during which his behavior on these forums, as well as in real life caused much sensation and is well documented for those interested in using the search function.

He was subsequently involuntarily hospitalized in a psychiatric facility, diagnosed with Bipolar Affective Disorder, with multiple delusions of grandeur. He now seems to be in a depressive phase of his illness and is spreading doom and gloom on the speculation forums. Either that, or he has sold just before we hit 1000 and is now regretting his mistake.

Either way, thread carefully with him

That's the cheapest form of attack. You try to discredit the person instead of attacking his actual arguments. Ad Hominem is a very low debate tactic. Maybe he has a mental illness. Many people have. It doesn't mean they can't make significant intellectual contributions.

Not sure how valid it is, but if it's true it sounds orchestrated.

It's true that there were some very large donors. But my guess is it went like this: Some whales quickly realized that they could buy huge publicity for bitcoin by sending large amounts to this kid. I do not believe the kid himself was involved in any orchestration.

Nah I don't think he is either, I just mean someone with some money to spare saw an opportunity to manipulate the media and they capitalized. Not exactly ethical, and if the media does any research (I know, laughable), they might reveal the news as such. That'd play into their "pump & dump" rhetoric quite nicely.

I agree. On one hand, no matter what the motives behind these donations were, the kid did receive a CRAZY amount of money for nothing and that alone is perfect material for a news story.

what about the ones that have bank accounts and promote banks and have money in tax havens.  Oh and also most banks are in a tax have, it's the Square mile called the city of london corporation, that's not even london it's a completely different thing, has different laws and so that's why all the banks are HQ'd there.
I'm not really sure what you mean, but if you're saying what I think you're saying I don't think that's necessarily a fair analogy. Right now BTC is being traded as a brand new asset class. It's not like anyone in the public eye is actually promoting a generic "bank account" and if they were, how would they possibly gain from doing so?

Yeah but come on you can make the same accusation for pretty much anything the reporters write about. Maybe they own an iPhone and give nice reviews for them, which basically strengthens the ecosystem and thus benefits the reporters. Or maybe they write a nasty story about democrats because they like republicans better. How about giving US economics positive articles because they live in US and don't want to have a depression? They could also throw dirt at bitcoin simply because their boss tells them to do so, because the boss has an interest to keep bitcoins from spreading. Drawing the lines becomes quickly impossible.

I think all those benefits would be quite marginal, if even recognizable. Consider that people on TV who speak positively of equities of which they have a stake but don't disclose their position can be fined or jailed for that (at least, I believe so).

Yeah but think about what you are implying. You are basically saying that anyone in the media who owns bitcoins can't talk positively about bitcoins (without always mentioning they have some). I think that's absurd. It's like I would have to mention I own euros every time I say something nice about EU.

No because you would see no significant gain from mentioning something positive about Euros.

You can say the same about bitcoins. With a 12 billion dollar market cap it's not very easy anymore for one person to move the price.

And what if I own some Apple stocks trough a hedge fund or something? Should I not be allowed to say publically that I think iPhones are nice phones?

Maybe not, but most of the world HATES decimals in prices. Decimals confuse people. Would you like to see a cup of coffee cost 2 milliBits or 0.002 bitcoins? It's much easier to understand whole numbers. Also, many people think 1000 $ /bitcoin unit is too expensive. I try to tell them they can buy fractions of a bitcoin, but they hate that idea. People don't like dealing with fractions. It's basic psychology.

I think those apply to major crashes. This was more like a big correction, not really a crash. I mean nobody was thinking price would go to zero or something close to that (excluding Walsoraj of course with his single digit predictions). Most of those who sold during last weekend were simply trying to buy more bitcoins with a cheaper price.

That is another stumbling block for economists.  Infation encourages people to spend or invest their currency as soon as possible, thus keeping the economy in motion.  Deflation has the opposite effect, it encourages people to hoard the currency.  If bitcoins increase in value, they will be hoarded, and therfore will be less used in trade, and therefore their usefulness will be limited, and therefore their value will collapse. How will this paradox get resolved?

Okay, you say nobody want's to buy due to deflation because price will be cheaper tomorrow. I say with the same logic nobody should want to sell due to inflation because price will be higher tomorrow. Yet people are selling things all the time. People are also buying massive amounts of phones and computers, even though they will be better tomorrow. In real life, very few people can afford to hoard and wait. We have needs as humans that can't be put on hold forever.

sell high, rebuy $10 lower, and you can squeeze so much out of a good, foolish, monday morning rally like this one.

That would not be a profitable trade because of the fees (too small percent).
