I think trying to teach bitcoin to sheep is a huge waste of time.

The general public needs to be abstracted from any kind of personal responsibility.

They just can't handle it, and I'm done with trying to explain.

What the fuck dude, they're sheep if they don't buy, they're sheep if they sell, and now they're sheep if they aren't a massive computer nerd who understands every bit of nuance of security required for these things?

Don't be such an elitist asshole. Besides, if you keep calling them sheep, you'll never convince them to become greater fools.

The word for trading cultist I have is gamblers. The gambler thinks that he has to trade 24/7, he exposes himself and his psyche to a constant barrage of live charts, news. He preferably trades on margin with high leverage. If he has any sort of trading plan, then that plan continuously drastically changes due to the emotions when exposed to all this. As long as it goes well, they think they've figured it all out, but of course they will never decrease the risk they take and thus, even if they actually do have it figured out, they will get wiped out by tail risk alone.

I've seen many of them come and go. They last a few months typically.

Blitz,
could not agree more.
Most of the movements in bitcoin prices stem from speculation and investment into it. it's very similar to Gold. Adoption is not so much needed. Meaning, not 100% of the worlds population have to have golden bracelets or rings or earrings. It's enough that 1% hoard it or sell it = like central banks and funds and hedge funds

For evidence of this, one only needs to have a look at https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=337486.0. This fund has been buying thousands of BTC per week recently, pretty much absorbing 2 days of mining supply per week. Now imagine multiple such funds.

Adoption? Haha. Cheesy

sorry for waiting i had to dump my coins

Other than a few million satoshis in a spending wallet on a mobile device or a few coins on an exchange, why would anyone keep any bitcoins anywhere except in paper wallets?

Won't we?

Black Friday has little effect on the price of bitcoin... gotta wait until December 4th or soon thereafter.... but NO guarantees anything will happen after December 4; however, less likely any kind of rally will occur prior to December 4.

Out of curiosity why are you stating an importance to December 4th?

That's the date of the auction for the seized coins.

There was talk about OKCoin taking on some major hedge fund trades -- supposedly something like $3 billion. However, it turned out that, although they were using OKCoin's platform, they weren't looking to trade in Bitcoins.

Yeah, JorgeStolfi has confirmed this several times.

Not quite... I just pointed out that the fatal sentence could also be interpreted as "the fund will use our software and/or servers", rather than "the fund will trade bitcoin at our exchange".

However, since there was no further confirmation of the "will trade bitcoin" interpretation, and the price collapsed right away, I think that the alternative interpretation is now quite likely.

Not very scientific of you stolfi. Unless you have actual evidence to suggest that this 3bn hedge fund is not going to use bitcoin on OKCOIN then well done on becoming an out and out FUD'er.

3bn hedge funds decide to borrow software from some random btc site to trade other stuff? makes sense, because multi billion dollar hedge funds couldn't possibly buy their own servers or write their own software without involving a third party if it had  nothing to do with bitcoin.

jorgestolfi is one of the stupider trolls in here, but he genuinely believes he's smarter than everyone else, he's staked his reputation and ego on bitcoin being a failure, so now he's desperate for it to fail rather than end up looking the fool.

I worked with high frequency trading firms, who were in the same sort of valuation league as the afore mentioned hedge fund, these are companies that will spend $2000 on their lunch order and hire the best network and programmer guys in the world on salaries of hundreds of thousands of dollars *per month* in order to gain just a millisecond or two advantage on the market, to think they'd just co opt third party software or even borrow a server is absolutely stupid.

The only possible explanation for a hedge fund trading on a bitcoin exchange is that they have something they want, and cannot simply buy for themselves, and the only thing okcoin possibly has that they do not have or cannot buy is access to bitcoin market info, or the liquidity they need to play.

It's not neccessarily a good thing like some of the more myopic believers in here think, they could just plan to HFT the market and suck every penny out of everyone until btc is worthless, if they can. hedgefunds, HFT firms and the like do not *need* the market to increase in value to turn a profit, so the fact a hedgefund is involved doesn't neccessarily mean the price has to spike, as professor stolfi seems convinced should have happened if it were true.

tl;dr
=short and distort if it goes to zero they never have to cover and will just keep the money! muuahhaha Wink

Like Scrooge, I was also haunted by ghosts of Christmas past.

Like Christmas 2012 when I sold too much, or Christmas 2013 when I sold too little.

After a quick visit with the ghost of Christmas future, I have decided not to sell at all.

Ghost of Christmas present was not happy, but whatever, he can go get scrooged!

ok party is over.. pump to $500 now ... incoming Wink *watch!*///^ZOOMZOOMZOOOOOOMMMMMMMMM

Man, will we ever get above 382? Cheesy Seems like some magical invisible wall right there. No obvious wall, but is there actually any potential reason why we're stuck at exactly that mark? Theories, guesses?

Well, either a nice big dump or nice big pump incoming

everyone is expecting a pump so contrarian me says a dump Grin

pump confirmed ... just got off the horn with the big dogs Wink woof!

...speculative whales constantly splashing around in the market, causing crazy volatility.  They're likely done for the year.

Out of curiosity, why do you think that? I see no reason for them to stop now.

I am buying and maxing my bank account until the limit my banker would ask me some antimoneylaundering questions....

The low volatility is weird.

We've got some tiny but steady green candles on the 1D chart. My gut tells me we're going to shoot up in the next day or so and have that 3D EMA cross over we've been waiting for, but I'm not confident enough to go into a long position.

yes mah team.. i makes big money for this darkpool all the time never fale .. opening x20 long position on margin $500+ coins are coming up here soonish imhfo!! Smiley who told u

Is Bitchick still in India? She has the right idea. We should all be volunteering in India, Africa, and other poor areas of the world and teaching them how to set up bitcoin wallets on their home personal computers.

are you trolling

From what I recall she was out on a help/charity mission there. As for the idea you're talking about; I find it splendid. Actually, what's missing is the way to explain to average people, how they'll be able to use bitcoin in those countries. If you (or anyone) have any good ideas that you could use to explain to them what bitcoin is and how they would set up a wallet, that would be awesome. Please avoid word like "random matrix" or "cryptography" they will turn around and run... Cheesy

The majority people in underdeveloped (poor nations) do not have running water or electricity let alone a computer in the home this is why they are called underdeveloped or poor.

I am back from India. Smiley I returned a couple weeks ago.  I have been avoiding the boards because I am a bit depressed.  Husband sold some coins while I was gone.  I guess while the wife is away . . .  Sigh.  We really needed to pay some bills though so I wasn't here to argue with him.  I am the one with the worst hodling addiction.  We still have plenty of coins so please don't cry any tears for us. Wink  I am actually glad my Bitcoin addiction has lessened.  There are far more important things in the world.  I know, it is hard to believe!

That said, I totally see a need for Bitcoin in India.  Cell phones are everywhere but there are no easy ways, or even the ability for most people in villages there to pay for anything without using rupees.  Most little stores only take cash.  If they could transfer Bitcoin easily from cell phone to cell phone it would open up so many doors for ease of payment!  I so wished that they already took BTC.  It was really hard finding the exact change when a local guy came to the house we were staying at to sell us some Indian sarees (we were supposed to dress like the people there out of respect.)  It was very difficult to pay him and I found myself dreaming of BTC.  Smiley

I mentioned BTC to the head of Harvest India.  He was interested/intrigued but not really ready to do anything about it yet.  I am hoping once BTC takes off again, and if husband hasn't sold all the coins by then (half way joking) we can encourage him to take BTC with the promise of a generous donation if they do so.

I really think it is just a matter of time before Bitcoin takes off in these places.  It will have a slow start but once the ball starts rolling it will be countries like India where it will revolutionize how payments are made, IMHO.

i've been in preliminary talks with players in Mumbai ..maybe we can get the ball rollin' here soon? Smiley

...no?
They supposedly recovered 200 000 coins, 650 000 coins are missing.  So unless you for some reason are very high up on the list of creditors, them coins are gone. Kraken is not going to empty their stash for Gox customers.

Partly wishful thinking... some of the victims desperately want those bitcoins to be returned as bitcoin, and Kraken obviously wants that too (and force all victime to open an account with them). But there is no decision yet.  AFAIK the law requires all refunds to be in yen. Kobayashi said that he will look into it, and that has been "translated" into "will do".
